Today you're getting trivia dump on the musical The Drowsy Chaperone because I saw it last night and it's immediately become one of my dream shows (with the dream role of Man in Chair of course- look as a theatre kid who can't sing of course I'm going to latch onto a monologue-heavy character).
Let's begin!
The musical originated as an entertainment piece for the bachelor party of real life couple Bob (Robert) Martin (Canadian writer and actor) and Janet van de Graaf (Canadian improv and television artist). It was performed at the Rivoli Night Club and the admission costs were used to help fund their wedding
The original show did not have the role of the Man in Chair!
Despite having less than stellar reviews (notably being called a "sleeper" and having "forgettable" songs by critic Ben Brantly), TDC recieved thirteen Tony nominations and won five (Book, Original Score, Featured Actress, Scenic Design, and Costume Design)
The first translated version of the show opened in Japan (January 5th, 2009)
In the original Broadway production, during the Man in Chair's "intermission monologue", there's an added line about the Morosco theatre being torn down and a hotel being put in it's place. This line is a reference to the Marquis Theater (where the run took place) being part of the Marriott Marquis complex which was built where the Morosco Theater once stood.
The use of a deus ex machina in the form of Trix's plane at the end of the second act is one of the most literal version of the trope. The history of the term comes from ancient Greek performances, where, in resolution to conflicts, the Greek gods would appear in the show, often being delivered to the stage via a crane. So, the appearance of a character who can resolve the unsettled issue via a device from the sky is a fitting homage to the trope.
The Drowsy Chaperone is qualified as both a parody and a pastiche. If you didn't know what a pastiche means (aka me about five minutes ago), a parody mocks aspects while a pastiche celebrates aspects. Some examples of other pastiches are Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead (for Hamlet) and The Second Mrs Darcy (Pride and Prejudice).
The song Love is Always Lovely in the End replaced a song in the original production titled I Remember Love
In many productions, the animal Robert is compared to in Bride's Lament is changed from a monkey to a bunny to avoid racist undertones.
Aldopho says his name 15 times in the song I am Aldopho (the chaperone says it four times)
Whilst on Broadway, TDC had 32 previews and 674 performances before it closed in 2007.
Robert and George's tap dance before Underling's entrance in Cold Feet is approximately 1 minutes and 32 seconds long.
The longest song on the cast recording is Bride's Lament at 5:13, whilst the shortest (excluding Man in Chair's actor backgrounds) is the Act 1 Finale with 47 seconds.

I went to the You're the One That I Want Wikipedia page to see what happened to the cast now that I know what order the losers lose in, and I ended up on an archived version of the show's official site. In the contestant bios, the Dannys and Sandys all had to name their favorite musical(s)! Here, judge them with me!
Emotional Sandy: Les Miserables, Calamity Jane, Drowsy Chaperone, Oklahoma, and Grease
Rock Chick Sandy: Into the Woods and Les Miserables
Spiritual Sandy: Newsies, 42nd Street, Wicked, The Last Five Years, Rent, and Miss Saigon
Small Town Sandy (Laura): Wicked, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and The Last Five Years
Serious Sandy: Phantom of the Opera, Beauty & the Beast, Moulin Rouge, and Sweeney Todd
Baby Sandy: Crazy for You and Hair
Ballerina Sandy: White Christmas, Hairspray, and Showboat
Boy Band Danny: Les Miserables
Slacker Danny (Max): Into the Woods
Ambitious Danny: West Side Story
Bellhop Danny: Parade
Wholesome Danny: Jekyll & Hyde
Hot Danny: ...nothing. Did they forget to ask him/add it to his bio, or did he not have one? Probably the former.
Second Chance Danny: Rent, Grease, and Hairspray

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Introducing my new theatre series where you can follow along as I trawl the theaters of New York to see all there is to see. First up:
Beth Leavel at 54 Below
January 2, 2024 | 54 Below | Evening | Cabaret | Solo Show | 1H 10M
Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Prom, etc.) is a Class A riot from start to finish. Tonight, she delivered an eclectic mixture of sordid theatre stories, brassy belting, and misty-eyed ballads. She also ended the show with "Broadway, I'll see you in the spring," and...what did she mean by that? What would she even be in? She's too old for the female parts in The Who's Tommy, and the only other real option is The Heart of Rock and Roll, but the workshop cast doesn't have anyone in her age range either. And I really don't see her in Suffs. I am left with too many questions.
Edit (1/13): consider this my formal prediction for Lempicka. I was so caught up in Eden Espinosa that I forgot that musical has other people in it too.
Verdict: Why I Love the Theatre
A Note on Ratings
#broadway#beth leavel#54 below#welcome to the theatre: diary of a broadway baby#i'll admit it: beth leavel's rendition of Before the Parade Passes By from the last 54 below show i saw is my favorite out of all of them#controversial i know

Stargazer’s Art History: Best of the Amino Era (Portal)
Around 2017, I joined Amino! Most of what I posted was Barbie-related, but there were a lot of good posts I had there so I'll be crossposting them here individually (and slowly). However, I also had some Portal-based stuff that I was pretty proud of.
First up was this humanized GLaDOS design, based off of an earlier humanization I made of the Broken Age character Lorraine (the fork). This is basically what my design for Lorraine looked like, except in white/black/gold instead of blue/orange/white, and also a little more intense looking. She's a design I used in a sort-of-series I called "Project HuXLEY"—a Portal and Brave New World crossover. You can find that on AO3!
I also made this watercolor painting of her! I don't paint with watercolors very often, so this was a fun experiment for me.
This comic used lyrics from "The Mascot 3000" from Paul Shapera's New Albion Guide to Analogue Consciousness, which I thought would make great crossover content with Portal. I also wrote out this mess along the same lines:
[...] Anyway, without further dithering, let's get into the idea! Usually I would write this out as a fanfiction, but I have a nasty habit of writing a chapter or two and then never finishing it (R.I.P my Undertale x Phantom of the Opera, Harry Potter x Drowsy Chaperone, and Harry Potter x Dolls of New Albion AU fanfics), so this time I'm just going to write out the whole timeline/idea in bullet points and half sentences.
The Cast
Chell as Rachael: our protagonists have to stick together! Also, in the original Atompunk Opera, Rachael is the one who escapes the asylum, learns about the past, and eventually goes free in Elysium (and is really the only one who does so). It kind of fits. Chell is believed by Rattmann to be Cave Johnson’s reincarnation. She’s not, though; she’s no one’s reincarnation, at least not from this universe.
The Companion Cube as the Mascot 3000: this one has changed since the original comic, and even since I first started writing this post. Originally, I had set GLaDOS as the Mascot because of the song from Act 4, but given the differences between Mascot and GLaDOS (personality and role-wise), that didn’t really work. My next thought was to have it be Wheatley, since the Mascot is Rachael's guide throughout the opera, and Wheatley is Chell's guide (originally). But that doesn’t work great either given the second half of Portal 2. I settled on the Companion Cube because a) the Mascot 3000 is given to Rachael by Connor, who I’ve made Doug in this version, b) the Mascot yearns for companionship and people to go on adventures with, and c) Rachael and the Mascot go off together to explore at the end of the atompunk opera. Unlike the atompunk opera characters, though, they're not half-siblings. Or, uh, Chell's not the non-reincarnation of its half-sibling. Whatever. It’s confusing.
Doug Rattmann as Connor: although he may or not be old enough to fulfill this kind of role following the canon Portal timeline (which is super duper confusing anyway), I figured he was kind of perfect for this role. Connor is originally an employee of Arcadia Corp., the Voodoopunks’ science company, is against their AI experiments (for him, though, it's because they're using his toddler child), and frees Rachael from the asylum. Or helps, at least. It's unclear. He also uses the radio (through Lee's song) to communicate to Rachael, whom he assumes is Adrian's reincarnation. In this AU, Rattmann fills many of the same roles: an Aperture employee who doesn’t agree with all they do, who aids the protagonist and, while not the primary culprit behind its use, is at least somewhat associated with the radio. He helps free Chell from her confinement, sends her on her way with the Companion Cube, and is trying to rescue Caroline from Elysium, I guess. (It’s a bit ironic, though, because in order to do that, Caroline will have to be uploaded into an AI—as was the plan for Lee in the original opera—thus becoming GLaDOS.)
Caroline as Adrian: I kept going back and forth as to whether Caroline should be Lee or Adrian, but settled on this, I guess—but modified a little bit. She went through the portal into Elysium along with Cave. She was killed basically immediately, and reincarnated into… Doug, I think? However, Doug thinks that she is the one in Elysium who is still alive—not Cave—and wants to save her. He doesn’t know she’s gone.
Cave Johnson as Lee: I don’t have a very good description here. He’s the one in Elysium using the radio to communicate out with a song, but I guess unlike in the Atompunk Opera it might just be like the Still Alive instrumental thing and that’s why Doug doesn’t know it’s Cave who’s still there and not Caroline.
Aperture Science as Arcadia Corp.: a given, I suppose. Instead of working on GLaDOS as a solution to Cave's moon rock poisoning, they just kind of try to shoehorn themselves into Elysium. I mean, they do work on AI for a while (hence the existence of Wheatley), but it's kind of a complicated mess, and then they realize "ooh, portals," and try to make one into the world of the dead. IDK, maybe they think that going there will make them immortal: "This illness can't kill me if I'm already dead, dammit!"
The Plot (kind of)
Alright, I’ll level with you—I started writing this like a year ago and now I don’t remember what I was doing with this at all, but I wanted to at least post what I had written. Anyway, I do know that in my mind this AU basically just followed the plot of the New Albion Guide to Analogue Consciousness, so what I’m gonna do is summarize song by song, I guess.
New Albion 9: Don’t worry about it. It’s the expositional worldbuilding song and we don’t care about it in this context.
Rachael: Somewhere in Aperture, Chell awakens. She escapes from where she has been confined or whatever and starts trying to find her way up and out. I think the backstory here was that Portal 1 wasn’t really a thing (b/c GLaDOS doesn’t exist rn); the scientists were re-focusing their energies on Project Elysium (getting into Elysium to live there/have Cave go there/whatever) instead of the handheld portal device, but they figured they’d need test subjects at some point and put her in long-term relaxation. Since many of the scientists died in the migration (also in whatever legal action was taken against them), no one was left to reawaken her except like… Doug, but that took a little while.
Introducing the Mascot 3000: Chell runs into Rattmann, who gives her the Companion Cube to guide her. It’s a little more sentient than usual in this version, or maybe Chell is hallucinating as a result of whatever soup of chemicals they had her on in long-term relaxation. She continues on.
The Shopogopolis: Aperture is Aperture, so there’s still things out there that could kill her—whether it be rogue AI, turrets, or the stray employees left (she doesn’t want them to know she’s out b/c they might put her back into LTR)—so while she isn’t hiding in one place like Rachael, she is sneaking around, trying to figure out what to do next.
What the Trite and Banal Say: Chell and the Companion Cube follow a rogue radio signal. It leads them to the back offices, where Rattmann is waiting for them. He wants to tell/show them a little bit about what has happened over the years in Aperture, maybe the Companion Cube has the capacity to show them, maybe not.
New Albion 8: Also exposition, but basically Aperture Science is as twisted as ever, but with an extra layer—this would bring us back in time first to describe Aperture’s golden days, then the goals of Project Elysium and how things were in the company right before they actually completed that—they’re convinced it’s a great idea to go there, because if Cave is already there, then by some twisted logic he won’t be able to die or whatever. Or maybe he just wants control over the dying.
Kyrie: I don’t know, this kind of describes the plot too. Cave is really talking up the whole plan, even though it’s probably not a great idea.
Connor: Doug Rattmann gets an aria to explain his reservations, I guess. He’s not romantically involved with Caroline like Connor is with his unnamed wife, but he is just as disillusioned with the company he’s working for and their goals.
The Lovers: Idk. This would be where Cave and Caroline are having a dialogue about the whole plan but I’m not sure it would be in the same style or of the same flavor.
The Deceit: I’m cutting this one, it isn’t needed here. But Rattmann is planning on sabotaging the operation IG.
The Voodoopunks’ Ascension: Kind of the same as the original. They’re crossing over.
Ark 1: The scientists who are still in Aperture (who didn’t go over) are checking in on the groups (who are Not Doing Well); Rattmann has ratted them out to the authorities or whatever for something illegal (cause there’s a lot of potential things that they could be reported for aside from, you know, trying to cross the bridge into the land of the dead). They shut things down (on the surface level; there’s still stuff going on in the lower levels and in the relaxation centers that no one finds). Rattmann did not realize that Caroline had gone with the group into Elysium and his plan had banked on her still being around to run the company.
Elysium 1: in the opera, this is just some vague commentary. We don’t really need it here.
Postcards from Perdition Trail: the Aperture folks who went through before Doug ratted them out are stuck in Elysium now, and it’s Bad for the same reason as in the Atompunk Opera. It’s not great being Alive in the land of the dead because the creatures will kill you.
Lee: Cave sings his musings on the situation and the loss of Caroline (who was killed by the creatures and thus reincarnated into Chell IG(but not really; if we’re following the Atompunk Opera to the letter, then technically Caroline would have reincarnated into… Doug?).
Rachael Returns and The Moth: Chell and the Companion Cube arrive in Elysium. It was at this point in my writing that I switched Cave to being Lee and Caroline to being Adrian, so if there’s inconsistencies in my writing, that's why. Anyway Doug has that personal interest in saving Caroline—but she died. He did not know Caroline was killed but knows Chell is special. When Cave hears that someone is coming through, he thinks it’s Caroline reincarnate and is disappointed that it’s not her.
The Show No One Saw: Chell is bitter that this whole thing was for nothing—there was no Caroline to save (her mission) AND Cave was very dismissive and rude. She runs.
The Mascot 3000 and In This Episode: The Companion Cube gets some songs explaining its origin and drive for, well, companionship. (They ARE sentient, you know.)
The Rescue Plan, The Creatures Speak, and Lost Night’s Lullabye: Cave confronts Chell like “are you nuts?” thinking the creatures are gonna kill her. The Cube gets everyone’s attention and gives them the choice to either “go through the gate” and reincarnate OR be put into a robot body back in Aperture. If Caroline was still there, they’d have told her she HAS to upload but she’s dead. Cave is going to upload himself but gets killed. Those who want to are uploaded (minus Cave). Chell stays in Elysium with the Cube—symbolically, she’s already dead.
Connor Reprise: Doug waits indefinitely for Chell, Caroline, and the Companion Cube as the other Aperture folks upload.
New Albion 10: Narration to say goodbye.

Polls and revised dreamcasts
I made a post about how I'm using polls to help me figure what you want to see for upcoming dreamcasts. And I'm going to do the same for the older dreamcasts I'm reviving (in part because I've gotten better since I first created them and changed my format and in part because of the new cast members).
So at the beginning of the month, I will release a week-long poll that lists eight shows that I could create next month and do the top four winners each Wednesday (or Thurday if time is tight). The bottom four will move to next month's poll with four new shows. I
The revised dreamcasts for the rest of the month will be Chicago and Jagged Little Pill, so look forward to those! And make sure you vote so I can bring you the content you want to see!
Please make sure to vote!

Back for Part 2! Gosh..I think the Ragtime casting is so amazing too and I think Joshua Henry will be so great in this role. Haha wow..I remember watching the bootleg and being pretty impressed with the prologue especially. I do find the show a bit confusing or hard to follow so I couldn't imagine going in blind omg. There's just a lot of characters and stuff going on but I can totally see why you cried. Now thinking about it, I might have cried at Wicked or Hadestown..maybe Rent or Color Purple but not sure. It wouldve only been a few tears though and maybe like awe for seeing the show..idk. I'm not really a crier I guess. I remember my sister crying when we watched Finding Neverland bootleg though. Can't wait to hear about the Notebook experience!
I honestly don't remember much about Gypsy except Mama Rose so I'm not too interested in the rest of the cast honestly but she would be great! I only remember a few songs from the musical and can barely remember any other characters singing lol. But I do think Audra will be a star and give it her all so I'm still excited. This is why I like revivals..it reminds me about shows I've forgotten about lol. I am really hoping The Last Five Years will be good..it's the opposite where that's a show I know all of it well mostly cuz it's sung through. I did get pretty used to the movie and Jeremy singing the songs and I think Nick Jonas might not be that bad with these songs or too far from that. I mean..it's not as difficult as Les Mis and maybe he's improved from that or since then lol. Adrienne's voice does not seem very much like Cathy though so I guess we will see. I agree The staging and it only being two people will be hard to do on Broadway and mainly just by yourself singing songs. What else is the stage design supposed to look like or have on it..so things like that, but maybe it doesn't matter too much. Idk what they usually do either.
Those are nice choices! I am not as familiar with some of these shows..I can barely remember Drowsy Chaperone and am only familiar with a few songs from Secret Garden and Wild Party. But your Bridges choice seems great lol and A Chorus Line would be interesting. It is hard to think of older shows to revive sometimes but somehow they are doing Sunset Boulevard again after only like 6 years I think back in 2017 so you never know. I would pick Passion for another Sondheim musical and wonder how that would be since all Sondheim revivals seem successful.
I was enjoying both of these but honestly haven't been reading so I might read more today and tomorrow. My favorite tropes are second chance romance, friends to lovers, right person wrong time, love triangles if it makes sense, and like star crossed lovers forbidden love or secret relationships and poor boy loves rich girl lol. I also like stories that describe the whole characters relationship and how it got there. I'm a fan of past and present timelines mostly. I'm not really a fan of fake dating at all. In YA, I like a lot of mental health and more tragic stuff though and stories about friendships and families. What about you?
So at first I thought the casting was for Beach read and wasn't sure about it but I guess People we Meet on Vacation fits more. I'm not familiar with either of them so I really don't know. But I can try to finally finish the book and maybe try to picture them as the characters so it's like a movie. I'll see how that goes since I only know him from Ballad of Songbirds and he had another hair color lol. I hope it's good cuz they were approved by Emily I think. I also just found out that Every Summer After will have a sort of sequel about the characters brother romance and idk how to feel about it but I guess I'm looking forward to it. I'm enjoying this one but I think Every Summer After would still be my favorite but this didn't seem similar to me. I still haven't read Meet Me at the Lake so maybe will read that will people we Meet too, since that was announced as a movie a while ago too. I guess I'm happy about it cuz I always like romance movies anyway haha.
I honestly don't know what Taylor will do for the recordings either. Both options sort of make sense, but I think I agree with you. my sister even said today and we agreed since we already had a new album, she wouldn't mind waiting a year instead of nothing to look forward to next year when tour is over. I know people might want them done or as soon as possible, but I don't really mind. Well she already announced Speak Now TV and 1989 TV on tour..so I think she would again if it's that soon and of course I would be excited. I agree with your Collab choices too even if I'm not sure which will happen. I could totally see Maggie Rogers or Halsey for rep though. I'm so happy for Maisie and Holly for opening, and could even see them as good choices for debut too haha but she might want to keep it country people. I don't think Kacey likes Taylor though and not sure how their voices would be.
I finally listened to Clairo and enjoyed it. She kinda has a specific sound and voice that makes her music unique. I've listened to Gretta Ray a little bit..maybe I should listen more. I think she's okay but maybe too similar to Maisie to me. I also listened to Kacey's deluxe album which was fine but I think she picked the right songs on the album and they all started sounding alike. This week I am also focused on listening to Beabadoobee's album who also opened for Taylor! I would say this album is almost similar vibes to Taylor and softer than her previous albums. I wasn't impressed at first since I prefer some rock and guitar but it's growing on me now. The song Coming Home kinda had a similar feeling to Sweet Nothing and I really liked her song Beaches which was a good mix of her two styles. If you like Bea, i'd say Soccer Mommy is pretty similar actually! Like she does rock but also has some softer songs and I have a feeling her new album might be like that too. I just love her for her super relatable lyrics and vibes. I can try to give some recommendations if you want too. My favorite color is still pink but I changed it to green in 6th grade for some reason and I feel like it is an underappreciated color. Clearly I was always meant to be a Wicked Stan! I love saying pink goes good with green cuz those are the two colors I wear the most haha. Also omg how were the concerts? That's so cool and fun..I'd love to see Olivia live. Do you have any tips or anything since I am going to my concert next week? I will also send a review after. Actually tour starts tonight and I'm going to try to avoid spoilers if I can! I hope you have an awesome trip in New York if I don't talk to you again!!!
replying under the cut <3
i actually don't know a whole lot about gypsy either so you can take my sondheim stan card away haha. i love revivals but i wish sometimes they were a little more innovative and different! i tend to be a revival enjoyer unless it's like, the recent west side story revival haha. i'm really intrigued by the last five years, and my brain keeps wanting to classify it as a revival but no!! it's a new musical! it's never had a broadway transfer. it'll be interesting to see how it does stacked up against everything else! ooh i would love a passion revival! i think we should always have a sondheim show running on broadway 🙂↕️
oh i am so sleepy but i will give you some recs hehe:
second chance romance: this is everything 2 me. i loveeee second chance romance. and also i don't have a lot of good second chance romance recs ASIDE FROM PERSUASION the og :( everything i've ever read that's second chance tends to disappoint me.
friends to lovers: love, rosie (movie), where rainbows end (book love rosie is based off of), people we meet on vacation (book), when harry met sally (movie, perfection), the flatshare (book)
right person wrong time: MY FAVORITE TROPE ......... unfortunately have yet to find it in a book that i think is good enough but. once (movie/musical, which you obviously know). roman holiday (movie). oh it's everything to me. i guess normal people (book, tv) if you squint. kind of.
love triangles: i cannot think of a single love triangle book right now i am so sorry
star crossed lovers/forbidden love/secret relationships: also blanking on this one
poor boy loves rich girl: i don't have any rec recs here for books or movies but if you ever want to suffer through 6 terrible seasons of gossip girl (my beloved) for dan and blair (my most beloved) they're perfect to me i will not take criticism on this one. in hindsight i would also put normal people here.
also have i pitched the seven year slip to you? i'm sorry if i have! i am very sleepy haha. which i think you can tell from the jumbled reply here but i wanted to reply before your concert!!!! anyways, it's perfect and i do think you'd like it it's kind of adjacent to a lot of these tropes but not quite. but i love it dearly.
some of my favorite tropes: right person wrong time, second chance romance, friends to lovers (similar to you)! i don't mind fake dating; i actually love most tropes if done well and especially if they manage to put their own spin on things!
i didn't know every summer after is getting an adaptation!! that'll be interesting! i loveee a good romance movie! especially rom coms! we need the like 90s-2000s rom com movement back!
do we think she's announcing rep tv tomorrow? i guess by the time you see this and reply we'll know! part of me wants to say yes but i really don't think it's going to happen tomorrow. we'll see though! i feel like i keep seeing more things that make me go hmmm maybe and then i'm like no never mind i think she's just messing with us. i would love a maggie collab — i think about her cover of tim mcgraw all the time! i still haven't listened to the new halsey songs, i should do that soon! i'm so proud of holly and maisie both for opening :") i watched both sets on livestream and was just so so happy for them both. andddd yeah i don't think kacey likes taylor much haha
i loveee the new clairo. it's just so good! and gretta and maisie are friends so it makes sense that you think they're similar — and maisie sings backup on one of gretta's songs :) i haven't listened to new kacey yet, but i did listen to the new beabadoobee last week and enjoyed it. i haven't listened to it again since though and i don't think any particular track really stuck with me unfortunately but it is a solid album/listen-through. i also finally listened to the new hozier! i'll check out soccer mommy! i've heard good things but haven't yet! and in return, have you listened to alessi rose? i really like her ep and have been playing that quite a bit lately! that and the new del water gap deluxe songs :) oh and skullcrusher! you know i'll always take recommendations from you my friend!!
my concerts were both really really fun! i loved olivia's set and she's really grown as a performer since she was first starting out :") and the japanese house was so special because i got to see her with a close friend and at the zoo AND it was her biggest headlining show to date!! eep! i think my only concert tips are: bring earplugs! if you don't have them already, i recommend the loop ones but if you forget them no big deal (i forgot mine for olivia and had to ask for some) most arenas/stadiums will have earplugs!! just go to guest services or accessibility 🤍 and triple check the bag policy! sometimes you're allowed to bring a factory sealed water bottle which i love doing. and i personally like drinking a liquid iv when i get home post-concert (liquid iv + tylenol) just because i know i've screamed a lot/need to hydrate more. other tips: wear comfy shoes! bring a backup phone charger! if you're sensitive to flashing lights, try wearing sunglasses so it's not as IN your face — i did that at olivia and it helped a bit i think! but most importantly: be aware of your surroundings and HAVE SO MUCH FUN!!
i can't wait to hear about your concert!! sending love and big hugs!

(Characters in order: Robert Martin and Aldolpho, Kitty Feldzeig, Janet Van DeGraff, Robert Martin, Ace Paige)
There is a group that Ive referred to but never explained exactly who they are, so let’s meet Feldzeig’s Follies!!
imma be real with you, some of these characters come straight out of a musical 😔. Kitty, Alsolpho, Janet Van DeGraff, Robert Martin, and Victor Feldzeig all come from “The Drowsy Chaperone”. A while back, me and some of the cast of ANG were cast in The Drowsy Chaperone. We all really missed the show and, like any hyperfixation does, i subconsciously made a story for Kitty (the character that I played in Drowsy chaperone) that was really good that I just couldn’t not add it in. The other cast members chipped in with their characters story and here they are. Of course, there are slight changes to relationships and how things played out in the musical to make it a bit more believable, but for the most part I stuck true to how they act in the musical (except Adolpho he needed to CALM DOWN).
Feldzeig’s Follies is a traveling act that takes you back to that old jazzy showbiz era, when that burlesque dancer probably shot someone backstage but you’d never know that over the music and hollers from the crowd. Big band, swing, tap dance, the whole shabang and more! Is it a cabaret? Is it just one big musical with no consistent plot? No one knows but it sure is entertaining!
Their latest trip is to Gotham City. Star guest Robert Martin sings carols with the reoccurring sister act Murderers of Mingdol County’s Death Row; Kitty Feldzeig and Ace Paige. In honor of the death of Alice Paige 2 years ago, Ace Paige announces the first ever performance of his new single act; Alice in Wonderland. And on December 26th, the follies proudly presents their partnership with “Cloud-9 Studios” by bringing back former showgirl and now world-famous performer Janet Van DeGraff.
There are a lot of original character inserts with their own subplots that still connect to the main plot. I think it’s good to keep in mind the fact that this storyline purely is for our own entertainment and my influence on how the DC characters act mostly are from the DC media I consume (yummy yummy codotverse mm munch crunch Batman audio adventures tasty tasty mm mm MMM).

as a fellow theater educator, you're so real for that! some shows are racist and we should say it! also hoping their upcoming in the heights production has Latino rep in the cast or creative team
oh yeah this was a few years ago, i don’t remember who was on the team but i saw the production and it wasn’t the whitest youth theater ITH production i’d ever seen but. you know. it’s one of those HUGE issues, like, one that doesn’t have a simple resolution. do we as a hypothetical small/youth/university company choose not to do diverse shows because we assume we don’t have a diverse casting pool? or do we choose to do diverse shows and end up having whitewashed casting? this more a question for shows like in the heights, rent, west side story, etc, not shows like drowsy chaperone which just literally have an overtly (albeit satirical) racist scene in the middle of them lmao but. so on, so forth.

I am an old, so the three musicals that changed my life are in this order:
1. Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet (2,3,4) Street
2. The Drowsy Chaperone
3. Passing Strange
Sweeney Todd is pretty self-explanatory. I don't think we've had a successful horror musical before or since. And, yes, it's rife with capitalist commentary (the lower classes are EATING each other, DO YOU GET IT?) but the music is so good, the humor is so tight, and if you see it with the right cast it makes for a magical (albeit darkly magical) night.
Plus, "A Little Priest" is the big Act I closer, and it brings the house down solely with wit. How many musicals could pull off such a feat? How many composers would even dare? Only Sondheim, baby. Only Sondheim.
The Drowsy Chaperone is a wonderful "meta" musical. The show unfolds in the imagination of a lonely middle-aged queer man who is listening to a recording of his favorite old musical: the fictional 1920s romp "The Drowsy Chaperone." "The Drowsy Chaperone" within The Drowsy Chaperone is one of those "of their time" shows; the "plot," as it were, is naught more than a delivery service for songs and gags; more review than play. What makes the show sing (lol) is the narrator, the lonely middle-aged queer man whose commentary and behind-the-scenes gossip gives The Drowsy Chaperone a satirical bite. Plus, the part where he puts the wrong record on for Act II is one of the funniest bits I've ever seen on Broadway. A plus stuff.
Passing Strange is one of the more unique musicals that I have ever seen. Spike Lee made a recording of the show, which is available for streaming...somewhere, so I won't give too much away. I will say that the songs are groovy, the story is decidedly adult (nothing graphic, but there are songs about drugs, sex, and racial stereotypes, so be warned) and the cast is phenomenal, especially Colman Domingo. This was the first thing I had ever seen Domingo in, and it's wonderful to see him becoming a bigger star. The rest of the cast deserves as much.
So, those are my top three musicals that "changed" me. Seek them out if you can. There's a film version of Passing (as I said before) and about a dozen or so videos of Sweeney Todd (avoid the movie. It doesn't do the show justice. Also, fuck Johnny Depp). As for The Drowsy Chaperone? I don't know, seek out a local production? If there is one? It's not a "hot" show anymore, so that might be a tall order. It deserves to be, though. Trust me.

Drowsy chaperone cast
If you missed the show this time around, stay tuned for more productions from the Lakewood Cultural Center they won’t disappoint. Some of the moments were a bit cringy, like the part where Cardell “accidentally” puts on the wrong record, and it’s a very racially insensitive play about Asian folks, but those moments are definitely intentional and meant to drive a point home about how some lovable old theatre doesn’t exactly age well. In fact, hearing from folks who were familiar with the show, Cardell’s pensive portrayal of the narrator and other little details in the dialogue actually added more depth to a sometimes-goofy show. The actors were all well-suited to their roles, and the set was really cool and captivating. The show is meant to be madcap and funny, and it was. There really isn’t much criticism to aim at this show. Cardell’s portrayal of the narrator is both funny and a little dark and sad, as he drops various clues about a failed marriage, a reclusive personality, a closeted identity, and a distaste for the horrors of the modern world. But don’t let the premise fool you there are some serious, sad moments in there as well. In short, it’s a mostly silly show, plenty of jabs at both modern life and old-school musicals. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theater producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided suitor, and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight. The recording brings the characters to life, and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. “ The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another. So what exactly is this show about? The synopsis from the press release gives a pretty good idea: He’s a lovable theatre nerd, so what better role than someone who wants to share their favorite fictional musical with the audience? If you’re familiar with Bernie Cardell , who usually works in a directorial role with Vintage Theatre instead of on the stage, you ‘ll know what a perfect role The Man in the Chair, the narrator of the odd tale, was for him. And speaking of comic genius, Geoffrey Rush (fresh from conquering Broadway himself) will conjure up a dazzling cavalcade of stars, which includes the riveting Robyn Nevin, the shimmering Shane Jacobson, the graceful Grant Piro, the raffish Richard Piper and hoofing Heidi Arena. If you were lucky enough to catch The Drowsy Chaperone at the Lakewood Cultural Center, you know what’s up-it was great. The overarching conceit that the musical is recreated for us by a Broadway fan as he plays the Original Cast Album is a stroke of comic genius. For the next ninety minutes I sat enraptured by the most wonderfully mocking yet affectionate spoof of early Broadway musicals – a rich layer cake of homage piled on blancmange, with just a sprinkling of wistful insight. ‘On a quiet Monday night in New York a few years ago, I slipped into the first preview of this musical without knowing anything about it. Key Photography: Marcel Aucar, Production Photography: Jeff Busby Purchase a limited edition signed poster from Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone on ebay.īY ARRANGEMENT WITH HAL LEONARD AUSTRALIA, EXCLUSIVE AGENT FOR MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL, NY. With a star-studded cast, sequin-drenched costumes and dazzling new production numbers, The Drowsy Chaperone is a jazz-hot trip back to the golden age of musicals when stars had charisma, Broadway had romance and Rodgers had Hart.ĭon’t miss this five time Tony Award winning lollapalooza of a show. As he drops the needle on his all-time favourite album, an outrageously funny musical from the 1920s, The Drowsy Chaperone, bursts into life complete with a pampered starlet, gangsters, chorus girls and all manner of mayhem. Geoffrey Rush stars as a die-hard musical theatre fan who invites us into his dreary living room.
