7 Claims To Avoid On Your Car Insurance Policy
As a Malaysian car owner, you know the importance of having insurance coverage. However, before filing claims left and right, learning what NOT to claim on your car insurance is essential. We assure you that it will save you a lot of headaches (and money) over time. Keeping that in mind, let's dive into the top seven things you shouldn't claim on your car insurance in Malaysia.
Things You Should Not Claim On Your Car Insurance
In Malaysia, you should not claim the following items on your car insurance: Regular Maintenance You don't want to be that guy. Your car doesn't qualify for a claim because it needs new tires or an oil change. There is nothing special about regular maintenance. Your insurance policy does not cover the expense, so don't claim it as an accident-related expense. Don't be that guy who claims a new set of tires because they were "worn out by accident." It's not going to fly Wear And Tear You shouldn't expect a new car. In the same way as regular maintenance, your auto insurance does not cover wear and tear. For instance, faded paint, dented bumpers, or worn-out transmissions fall under this category. Having a car comes with all these responsibilities and is a normal part of ownership. Therefore, don't expect your insurance to pay for them. Modifications Don't go overboard. Your car insurance doesn't cover modifications you've made to your vehicle, such as installing a new sound system or adding a spoiler. Therefore, you will be responsible for the costs of these modifications if you are in an accident and they are damaged. Remember that your insurance won't cover the cost if something happens to your ride if you make some changes. Driving Under The Influence Don't drink and drive. There's not much to say here. Getting caught driving under the influence is risky for yourself, your insurance policy, and those around you. When you go under the influence of alcohol, your insurance will not cover the damage, so stay sober and stay safe on the road at all times. Racing Or Reckless Driving Leave the Fast and Furious stuff to the movies. Your insurance does not cover the damages suffered in an accident caused by reckless driving or racing. Excessive speeding, drag racing, and street racing fall under this category. In other words, if you're a speed demon, know that your insurance won't save you in an emergency. Fraud Don't lie. An insurance fraud conviction could result in a denied claim and you being charged with a crime, for example, exaggerating the extent of the damage or claiming for injuries that did not occur. Be honest with your insurance company, don't risk it. Natural Disasters Mother Nature is not covered. Occasionally, Mother Nature can be a real jerk, and Malaysia's weather can be unpredictable. Nevertheless, just because a natural disaster damages your car, such as a flood or landslide, does not mean your insurance will cover it. Car insurance policies typically exclude damage caused by natural disasters, so check your policy carefully before filing a claim.
Final Thoughts
Car insurance can be a real lifesaver in an accident, but you need to understand what you can and cannot claim for. You don't want to be that guy who tries to sneak in a claim for regular maintenance, you don't want to expect your insurance to cover wear and tear, you don't want to get too fancy with modifications, you shouldn't drink and drive, you shouldn't be speeding, and you shouldn't lie. Check with your insurer if you need help determining what your insurance policy covers. However, the most important thing is always to drive safely, avoid drinking and driving, obey traffic laws, maintain your vehicle regularly, and avoid taking unnecessary risks. The long-term savings will be tremendous. Read the full article

DUI - Driving under the influence (of alcohol).
Did you know?...DUI is a Class-1 misdemeanor in Virginia. A class-1 misdemeanor has penalties of up to 12 months in jail and up to a $2,500 fine. Insurance premiums jump astronomically. Points are removed from your license. All this with just a single one - first one! Third or subsequent offenses are felonies.
There are defenses to DUI charges. Don't take on the Commonwealth alone.

Did drive under influence decide Anne Heche’s destiny?
The famous Emmy-winning Anne Heche dies after a horrifying car crash. On August 5, 2022 she crashed her Mini Cooper into a residence in Mar Vista in Los Angeles. The high-speed crash turned her car into flames. After 65 minutes of struggle, she was rescued from the burning car and sent to the hospital. Shortly after the accident she fell into a coma. She was kept on life supports after she was pronounced brain dead on Aug 12, 2022. On Aug 14, 2022 she was peacefully let to die as the life supports were removed.
Though she was famous and rich, her money could not save her life as drive under the influence pulled the curtain of her life. The Los Angeles Police Department revealed that her blood had the presence of narcotics. They continued their investigations after the accident and it was said that if she came back to life, she had to face DUI felony charges.
Hours prior to her accident, a podcast was released where she was seen drinking vodka with her co-participant. In the image of Heche with a red-capped bottle in her Mini Cooper was clicked hours before her crash. Heche first crashed her car into a garage and fled the scene when the nearby people rushed towards her car just 30 minutes prior to the main and fatal crash. These were proof for her driving under the influence of drug or alcohol.
The crash on Aug5, 2022 was her first DUI crash which brought the end to her life. Rash driving and driving under the influence can be detrimental enough to take the life of an individual. Anne Heche’s life was an example for that. There is no first time or a second time in a DUI accident. if you are not fit to be behind the wheel, it can put an end to everything.
Though her death had closed the DUI charges against her, it has a message to tell the world, how important the traffic rules are and how one should stay away from being behind the wheel when under the influence of drug, alcohol or prescription medicine that prevents driving.
If at all you were arrested for a DUI charge depending on the severity of the accident, you might be given the penalties of fine, driving license suspension and jail time for the first time DUI accident. you could be charges a misdemeanor or felony depending on the type of damages you have made. Repeated felony will impose permanent license revocation and more jail time.

What Crime is a Person Guilty of if Caught Driving a Boat While Intoxicated in Fort Myers, Florida?
The US Coast Guard issued a warning that alcohol is more hazardous on water than on land. And in Florida, boating accidents and injuries increase when the weather is hotter. That is why knowing the safety requirements and how these laws affect you is important.
If you are driving a boat while intoxicated, what are the possible consequences?
Penalties for a DUI charge while riding a boat are severe. Besides a traffic ticket, you will find yourself having a criminal record. If you man a recreational boat, you can get your boating license revoked. If you are handling a commercial boat, you cannot only lose your license, it might be possible that you will be saying goodbye to your livelihood. The one thing you should remember that if you receive a felony conviction, you could also lose your right to vote during elections.
If you are found to have blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% and you are manning a boat, you can be charged with DUI. First offense will usually give you a fine from $500 to $1000 and jail time of a maximum of six months with possible probation. Second degree misdemeanor of diving under the influence means nine month in jail and no more than $2000 fine and up to nine months in jail. Third degree felony on the other hand, will give you up to $5000 fine and a maximum of five years in prison.

It is pretty familiar and equally frustrating in Malaysia to experience traffic accidents caused by poorly maintained roads and reckless driving. Therefore, the police and JPJ use roadblocks and summons to minimize traffic violations and create a safer environment. We will examine ten of the most expensive traffic offenses in Malaysia:
Driving And Parking In The Emergency Lane
We often see people using the emergency lane for their benefit on the highway, especially during traffic congestion or holidays. It is, however, illegal to use emergency lanes on streets for any other purpose other than for emergencies. For example, police officers often drive ambulances to specific emergencies involving life-threatening situations. There is either a do not enter sign or a one-way street. It would help if you recognized the road signs and did not enter the lane when you saw them. A fine of up to RM300 if caught. Not to mention that you will cause a traffic jam simultaneously.
Summon Amount: RM300
Over Speeding
Another common traffic offense is overspeeding. However, most people seem unaware of the highway and road speed limits displayed on road signs. Even if they are aware, they tend to ignore them. Their selfishness has led to many lives in fatal accidents because of their negligence.
Summon Amount: RM300
Ignoring Traffic Lights
In Malaysia, this is one of the most frequent traffic offenses and one of the most expensive. In Malaysia, drivers tend to speed and run red lights, which is extremely dangerous since even a split-second mistake can cause severe injury to both drivers and pedestrians. Go means green, slow down (don’t speed up) means yellow, and stop means red.
Summon Amount: RM300
Driving In A One-Way Lane
There is either a do not enter sign or a one-way street. It would help if you recognized the road signs and did not enter the lane when you saw them. A fine of up to RM300 if caught. Not to mention that you will cause a traffic jam at the same time.
Summon Amount: RM300
Not Displaying Your License Plate
A fine of RM300 if a car plate is missing on the front and rear of your vehicle.
Summon Amount: RM300
Driving Without a Seatbelt
Even though this act does not harm anyone on the road, the authorities consider it a serious offense since it puts you and your passengers at risk by failing to follow basic safety guidelines. No matter who is driving or riding in the car, you must make sure that everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt to minimize the risk of getting injured in an accident. Never assume you won’t need one someday.
Summon Amount: RM300
Driving While Using a Mobile Phone
Perhaps you’ll be surprised to learn that drinking and driving isn’t the most dangerous traffic offense. Nowadays, we often text while driving. The fine will still apply if you are caught holding your phone, even in hands-free mode!
Summon Amount: RM300
Drink And Drive
It is something you shouldn’t do at all. But many of us do it anyway (especially during weekends). The offense is one of the most common in the country. The penalty for driving while drunk in Malaysia is fined RM300. If you are caught driving under the influence, you will be jailed for one night. Drive safely. Take Uber or carpool with that non-drinker friend.
Summon Amount: RM300
Driving While Asleep Or Inattentive
A significant cause of fatal accidents is sleepiness or inattention on the part of drivers. Pullover at the nearest rest area or gas station if you had a long day after work or feel tired after a long drive.
Summon Amount: RM300
Overcrowding In a Vehicle
If you exceed your vehicle’s capacity limit, you can be fined. Most people don’t know about this exciting traffic offense. When carpooling or traveling together, be careful not to overload the vehicle with too many items or people. It can block the rearview mirror, resulting in accidents and fines from the police.
Summon Amount: RM300

Owning a car comes with its share of maintenance expenses. Maintaining a vehicle can be very expensive owing to the ever-increasing maintenance costs. So, investing in good auto insurance coverage makes sense to protect you from those additional expenses arising out of any eventuality!
So What Is Own Damage Insurance Policy
As the name implies, an Own Damage policy (OD) is a personalized auto insurance coverage that protects you and your insured vehicle against damages due to accidents such as fire, theft, etc. In the event of an accident, an own damage policy pays for the expenses to repair or replace parts of your vehicle damaged in the accident. For example, let us say you parked your car at its usual place and all of a sudden your neighbor’s cricket ball git one of its windows or probably a coconut falls on the windscreen and leaves not only shackles but dents too! You might be looking at hefty losses in retrospection, but in such circumstances, your damage insurance can get you out of such an unfortunate incident.
Who Should Get Own Damage Insurance?
When looking to purchase auto insurance coverage, you have the option to buy a limited cover or one with an extensive range. As for many, they go for the limited scope, which is the third-party liability policy. The main disadvantage of purchasing this type of auto insurance policy is that it does not offer you or your car protection. So if you are carrying third-party auto insurance coverage, you might also want to purchase a standalone Own Damage policy to protect your vehicle from damages and losses.
What Is Covered In Own Damage Insurance Policy?
Own damage insurance policy covers the cost of damages or loss to your car due to the following:
Natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, typhoons, hurricanes, storms, hailstorms, frost, inundation, self -Ignition, lightning, cyclone, etc.
Artificial disasters such as strikes, vandalism, protest, riots, and terror attacks
Theft or malicious acts or fire.
What’s Not Covered In The Own Damage Insurance Policy?
Though an Own Damage insurance policy is excellent for your car’s protection, few things are not covered in the policy. These include:
Third-Party Liabilities
Own Damage Insurance policy is a standalone policy and, as such, will not cover your third-party liabilities. Your third-party auto insurance policy will instead take care of the same.
Drunk Driving
DUI or also known as Driving Under Influence (of alcohol), is against the law. Therefore, the Own Damage insurance policy does not cover claims for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Driving Without A Driver Licence
No insurance company will accept claims if you’re driving without a driver’s license. So, you can only file claims if you are driving with a valid driver’s license; as such, Own Damage insurance policy will not cover claims if you’re going without a valid driver’s license. Others include:
Consequential Damages
Contributory Negligence
Driving without a Licence Holder
Wear and tear and depreciation
Not having a valid driving license
Mechanical or electrical breakdowns, failures, or breakages
Contractual liability
How Protected Are You In Your Damage Policy?
The amount that your insurer pays you for an own damage claim depends on your car’s Insured Declared Value, the deductibles you opted for, and the make/model of your vehicle.

Car Insurance Policy Price
It was time to renew your car insurance policy, and the agency informed you that your premiums would cost more than earlier. You might be wondering when did that happen and how often your car insurance rate will increase in the future. The experts indicate that it is impossible to determine how often the cost of premiums will change. However, you can consider numerous factors to discover when to identify rate adjustments.
Why Did My Car Insurance Rate Go Up?
If you are wondering why you need to pay more for your policy than last year, these are the most common reasons.
You Lost Your No Claim Discount
That is the primary and most frequent reason why your car insurance in Malaysia might increase. Before we discuss how you can lose the No Claim Discount (NCD), let’s explain it briefly. NCD is a discount that you get when renewing your insurance deal for multiple years. The lowered price can go from 25% (second year) to 55% (after the fifth year). As you can see, that is a considerable difference. If you lose it, the odds are that you will have to pay a lot more for your insurance. Here are the two main reasons why you would lose the No Claim Discount:
You filed a claim – if you filed an insurance claim during the last year, cancel the discount automatically. That is why many people avoid filing claims when the damage costs are low.
Someone else filed it against your policy – it might be that a third-party filed a claim against your current deal.
You Were Involved In A Collision
If you were a part of an accident, and you were the one to blame for causing it, your premiums might increase. That is because the insurance providers will see you as a bigger risk than before. Every agency will check your violation history carefully. Apart from accidents, they will also consider driving under the influence (DUI) or other violations.
Canceling A Policy Related To Car Insurance
Are your associated policies still active? If you cancel the homeowner’s policy, the odds are that your car insurance premium with the same provider will rise. There is another reason why your car insurance cost might be higher than usual. You might have changed the provider, and it is your first year with the news agency.
Other Reasons Why Car Insurance Rates Might Go Up
Your car insurance policy’s cost might increase for reasons that don’t have anything to do with you. Here is an overview of other factors that affect the rates:
An increased number of accidents – the agencies might decide to change the rates because the overall number of incidents has gone up in recent years. That happens because of distracted drivers talking on smartphones, typing messages, etc.
More expensive to repair the car – the cost of repairs might change, especially with new safety features and car components.
Pricier healthcare – the healthcare cost might also go up, including medical treatments and therapy. That is why the agencies might be forced to alter the rates.
If you move to an area with a higher flood risk or another factor the company considers relevant to your car insurance policy, that could also be the reason for a higher premium rate.

Driving Under The Influence (DUI)
The dangers and outgrowths of driving under the influence (DUI) are well-known. Even so, there are some people who still continue to drink and drive. You should know that your driving history plays a crucial role in determining what you pay for car insurance premiums. And if you have a past conviction for DUI or driving while intoxicated (DWI), you will be required to pay higher premiums because you pose a greater risk. We’ll explore how a DUI conviction affects car insurance premiums.
Premium Will Rise
At the point when your insurance company discovers you have a DUI, various things can occur. Your insurance company can drop your policy, but if they choose to keep your business, your premiums will go up. Try not to assume that since you don’t see an instant increment that nothing will occur – the premium rise will regularly happen at the first renewal after the conviction is conclusive. This implies if your policy renews December 1st and your last conviction is December 2nd, you likely won’t see a rate increment for probably another six months.
For How Long Does A DUI Affect Insurance?
Insurance company rules dictate to what extent your rates will be influenced by a DUI conviction. As with most slight or significant convictions, a DUI will raise your vehicle insurance rates for three to five years. An insurance company may make it, so you are qualified to get insurance with them after the conviction is three years of age, in any case, you will still be paying an extra charge for an additional two years. Insurance companies each make up their guidelines for how they handle DUI convictions. The standard is that DUI will affect your vehicle insurance rate for five years or more.
How Much Will My Premiums Increase?
This question might be a little bit tricky to reply to. It will have a significant effect depending upon your prior driving history. If you are moving out of a preferred driver status into this new high-risk driver status, you will see a tremendous change. You could be paying as high as doubling your present cost and perhaps even higher in some instances. Assuming you are already a high-risk driver, you may not see a very remarkable change in cost. It’s just that your high-risk status will be beginning once again, and you will be paying the high rate for much longer.
What to Do If My Insurance Goes Up After DUI Arrest?
Auto insurance is a serious business. Numerous insurance firms are vying for your business, regardless of whether you have a DUI conviction on your driving record. If your insurance rates go up after your DUI capture, you might want to search for other cheaper insurance premiums. You should also note that several factors could also impact your rate after driving under the influence. Factors such as age, driving history, make and model of your car, time, where you live, etc. could impact your car insurance rate after a DUI. Knowing these factors can help you find the right insurance and limit your cost.
Though comparing rates can get you less expensive insurance, however, in the end, driving responsibly and mindfully will be the best way to get your rates back to normal. The best thing you can do is to be straightforward with your insurance company and don’t get another DUI.

DUI? Make no mistake, driving under the influence charges are serious and have implications for years.
DUI can be charged for alcohol or for drug use.
By operating a vehicle on Virginia highways, you have consented to a breath or blood test upon arrest for DUI. If you unreasonably refuse a breath or blood test, Virginia law requires the court to suspend your driver’s license for one year. A second breath or blood test refusal shall result in a three-year suspension. A second breath test refusal is also a Class 1 misdemeanor.
If you are also convicted of DUI, the DUI driver’s license revocation period will run consecutively with the breath or blood test refusal revocation. You are not eligible for a restricted driver’s license during the suspension for a breath or blood test refusal.
Your auto insurance rates will go through the roof as well.
