The Artist on stage at Theatre Royal Plymouth
Devon. I’m in Devon. And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak. This evening, at the Plymouth Arts Cinema I had the honours of introducing a screening of the modern silent that made a big noise, The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius, 2011). You remember? The one that won FIVE Oscars? With the dashing Jean Dujardin and the yet more dashing Uggie the Dog? Raise one Gallic eyebrow if you know the…

Still Holding Up
HAIRSPRAY Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, Tuesday 19th October, 2021 Based on the 1988 film by self-proclaimed Pope of Trash, John Waters, this exuberant musical is doing the rounds again. Admittedly, the source material is Waters’s most mainstream movie, but writers Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan retain much of the flavour of the original, especially the outlandish cast of characters. I’ve…

‘King Kong,’ A Must-See Production of Power and Scope
‘King Kong,’ directed by Drew McOnie, written by Jack Thorne, score Marius de Vries, songs Eddie Perfect (Joan Marcus)
According to the most “prestigious” of NYC critics, King Kong (at the Broadway Theatre) is a Duh, Duh, Duh Dud. Well, esteemed theater geniuses, not so fast. Your glib, “humorous,” self-serving, Kongpulverizations reflect more arrogant, Trumpian insult than notable explanation…
