Ivan Marcial-Rodriguez discusses how DACA recipients are not that different from American citizens, the only difference is their legal status. Marcial-Rodriguez states that more people need to understand this so that DACA can continue and change can be made.

Is your oc insecure about anything? How does this show in their behavior?
I like these kinda questions...
Fable: He's always insecure by his voice. He feels like it isn't 'manly' enough and some people mistake him for a girl or really a lot younger than he is, and that embarrasses him. He normally speaks but sometimes he'll try to speak as little as he can and avoids any questions about his voice.
Thorn: He's pretty insecure that people like his brother more than him. He's seen a lot of people online talking about how he's the 'less cool brother' and how he's so mean for hurting his brother, even though it's just a tv show! It gets to him though.
Axe: Axe is insecure by the hole in his skull. It makes him feel… ugly. Really everything about him makes him feel that way, and he hates it.
Noodle: Noodle dislikes their teeth. It's something that they're always very embarrassed about, that's one reason why they hide their smile with their hands.
Chompers: He is also embarrassed about his teeth! They're very sharp and he feels like it makes him look gross and scary. He hides his mouth 100% and has a hard time trusting others to take it off.
Killer: sometimes he feels bad for not being able to understand what people are talking about. They'll be like talking about their emotions and stuff and he wants to help them feel better, if he cares about them, but like… dude… he's got no idea what the hell to say so he's gonna say something stupid and most likely get himself smacked.
Heartbreak: Uh… Ever…Everything?

Academic Perspectives
In the article ““I used to be one of them”: reflections on researching DACA students as a DACA beneficiary” by Alessandra Bazo Vienrich. Bazo Vienrich tells the story of what it is like being a researcher who interviews DACA recipients while also being a DACA recipient herself. The article “Navigating DACA in Hospitable and Hostile States: State Responses and Access to Membership in the Wake of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” by Kara Cebulko and Alexis Silver discusses the varying experiences that DACA recipients have based on what state they live in. The two articles do not discuss the same stories but they both share the message that DACA is important and needs to be reinstated.
Bazo Vienrich’s article discusses her own personal experiences as a Latina who was a DACA recipient and her experiences doing research and gathering data on other DACA recipients. (Bazo Vienrich, 2021) Bazo Vienrich discusses Gloria Anzaldúa’s Mestiza Consciousness and how this describes the two parts of identity. (Bazo Vienrich, 2021) Bazo Vienrich is a student who was able to get an education because of DACA and it was challenging for her to navigate gathering data and doing research that will not be compromised by her “insiderness.” Though having this intimate understanding of DACA and being undocumented allowed her to connect and relate to the people she interviewed and this has many benefits. (Bazo Vienrich, 2021) The connection allows her to give advice to the people she meets and gather important information for her research. (Bazo Vienrich, 2021)
Cebulko and Silver discuss how despite DACA being a federal program, not every state in the United States fully gives DACA recipients the same treatment. They compare two states to illustrate this point, Massachusetts and North Carolina. (Cebulko & Silver, 2016) In North Carolina DACA recipients can get a driver's license but it will look different from the standard license that everyone else gets. It essentially ensures that anyone who sees their license will know they are a DACA recipient. (Cebulko & Silver, 2016) North Carolina also does not allow for the DACA recipients there to get in-state tuition when applying for college. (Cebulko & Silver, 2016) Massachusetts does not have separate driver’s licenses for DACA recipients, and Massachusetts also does allow for DACA recipients to get in-state tuition when applying to college. (Cebulko & Silver, 2016) The lack of uniform treatment has a big effect on the lives of the undocumented young people on DACA. The lack of in-state tuition for DACA recipients in North Carolina makes it extremely difficult for the people on DACA to afford to attend college and the different driver’s license leaves DACA recipients more susceptible to discrimination if anyone sees their license, especially the police. (Cebulko & Silver, 2016)
In both of the articles, the author’s see the issue as the fact that undocumented immigrants do not have access to very important resources, the one thing that does provide undocumented immigrants resources, DACA, is under threat. There is little disagreement that the lack of resources and DACA being taken away is the main issue within the academic articles that deal with the subject of DACA. There is a group of people who see the issue with DACA differently, they take issue with the fact that the DACA program exists, but most academic voices are on the other side of the issue.

On June 15th, 2021, DACA recipients and allies gathered in protest, calling for the United States government to take permanent action regarding the legal status of undocumented immigrants. DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, offers eligible students an opportunity to legally work and attend school without the threat of deportation for two year increments. This program has proven vital for many immigrant families, yet it has been highly inaccessible due to the cost of application, legal fee requirements, and strict qualifications. For instance, to apply for DACA, an individual must pay a mandatory $465 application fee, be in school or have a high school diploma, and find a USCIS-qualified lawyer to represent their case. If an application is lost in the mail, late, or if a person does not meet the many requirements, they cannot simply reapply for DACA status. Furthermore, as of 2018, the Trump administration phased out DACA meaning that new applicants can no longer be considered for the program. Those who have jumped through many hoops over the past nine years to obtain and maintain their DACA status have still been barred from many rights which are afforded to citizens. DACA members cannot vote, obtain driver’s licenses in certain states, serve in the armed forces, participate on a jury, or access federal financial aid. Though DACA has helped many families in the past by granting two year periods of protection from deportation to those who meet certain standards, families now require more permanent solutions. There is currently no direct access to citizenship for the 800,000 individuals on DACA, leaving these individuals and their loved ones to worry about issues such as job security, legal status, and access to education. However, President Biden has proposed the establishment of the DREAM act, which would create a pathway to citizenship for all DACA recipients. It is time for the American government to create long-term legislation regarding the lives of almost a million undocumented immigrants whose lives and livelihood depend on their ability to remain in the United States. Call or email your congressperson and share your support online or with those you know; your voice is your vote!
