Alive or Dead or In Between
For @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt #269 Living Weapon.
Very rough because I am cutting it very close to the deadline (in fact, I may have already missed it!).
Famdom: Gatchaman Characters: Joe Asakura (Also mentioned Ken Washio, Dr Raphael, Nambu) Words: 800
Tumblr media
He couldn’t tell them.
Not when they had so happily accepted him back after two years.  They were all so ready to believe the miracle.  That he hadn’t died after all.
There would be questions later, but for now everyone had just welcomed him back into the team as though he had never left.
Only Ken had expressed anything other than happiness at his return.
Joe had known all along that his coming back from the dead would be hardest on Ken.  It was one of the most compelling reasons not to contact them.  To let them believe he hadn’t survived Kross Karakorum.
At first it hadn’t mattered that he’d decided to remain apart from the people he cared about.  He was still coming to terms with the fact he had been rescued from the certain death he had accepted and almost welcomed.  Still learning how to deal with the things Dr Raphael had needed to fix in order to save him, and what that meant for him physically.  The emotional minefield had come later, and he was still navigating it.
But with Sosai X’s return and Gallactor threatening his team – his family – once again, Joe hadn’t been able to stop himself from watching over them.  Then watching from the shadows hadn’t been enough and he’d had to help them in secret.  It was a slippery slope from there to being unable to remain hidden.
He and Ken had always had a hard time talking through differences of opinion.  Oh, they’d had their fair share of arguments and shouting matches, but the discussions that really mattered had always been done with fists.  And bruises.  Then, with the air cleared and feelings made known the two of them would go back to being the closest of friends.
Brothers.
The day Joe had returned to them had been a reunion full of emotions rather than words.  Smiles, tears, embraces from Jun, Jinpei and Ryu, and even Nambu Hakase.  So it was no surprise to Joe that Ken made his feelings known with a single word that would have left his fist almost as bruised as Joe’s jaw.
Joe understood it for what it was.  An admonishment for not coming clean and telling him he was alive as soon as he could.  For the years of grief that could have been avoided.  And a painful reminder that he was an idiot for trying to go it alone.
If he was brutally honest with himself, he deserved that hit and more for thinking it would be better if he stayed away.  He needed them.  Despite all the pieces of him that Dr Raphael had put back together he would always be incomplete without the team around him.
But they still didn’t know.
They couldn’t know.  He couldn’t take that chance that they’d treat him differently, or stop him from what he needed to do.
He’d been built for a purpose.
He supposed that had been true even before his “death.”
Nambu Hakase had never intended for them to be weapons, but that was what the Science Ninja Team had become – the world’s greatest defence against the evils of Gallactor. He had trained them for hand-to-hand combat in an effort to keep them safe from enemies that had no qualms about killing innocent people.  He had created machines for them, devised their uniforms and weapons to keep them safe, and taught them to be stealthy and smart.  They’d been intended more as spies than the combat squad they had become.
But if the Science Ninja Team could be described as living weapons, they had no idea how much more fitting that description had become for him.
What Nambu Hakase had started, Dr Raphael had completed.
It was no longer just Joe’s martial arts skill, ninja stealth and skill as a marksman that made him deadly to Gallactor.  Dr Raphael’s generous gift of life snatched from the jaws of death had come at a price.  He hadn’t done it just out of the goodness of his heart.  He’d rebuilt Joe specifically to get close to Sosai X . . . and destroy him.
Perhaps the term living weapon didn’t exactly fit Joe anymore.  Was a cyborg strictly alive?  He still couldn’t decide, which was the reason he hadn’t told the team even that much.  His heart was no longer living tissue.  The thing beating in his chest was the bomb he would have to detonate to take out Sosai X.
So, even if he conceded that a cyborg was alive, he was living on borrowed time.  His final mission would be one of self destruction.
They deserved to know, but he couldn’t tell them what he’d become.
How could he tell them he was back from the dead only to give his life once more.

Pictured - Gatchaman Origins, Ch1 Three Fates - P33 Preliminary Layout
Hi. I’m not on here much at all anymore. My tumblr just doesn’t get enough traction for me to keep posting, but I am absolutely still making art (yes, fantasy art too!), and I am definitely still working on my Gatchaman Origins fan comic. In fact, this has become my main focus and I am currently on a rigid set of deadlines to try and crank out the first chapter by Spring 2021. It’s gonna be 43 pages, full color true to Tatsunoko’s retro technicolor style, and that’s just the first chapter. This is a big dumb project that I can’t make money off of.
If you want to follow along, the absolute best place is my Patreon. Nearly all of my Gatchaman related posts are early access for Patrons but go public (free!) after a few days. The exceptions are high res images, which are available by request (Free!). My non-paying followers get notifications as soon as I have a new tidbit that goes public. Right now I’m finalizing my preliminary layouts and gearing up to start on the final art by the beginning of September. Rest assured, if there are any big announcements, I will plaster them all over my social media, but I tend to forget about tumblr.
Other places you can find me where I’m actually active:
Instagram
Twitter
Facebook
If you would like to support my work financially but Patreon’s subscription setup just isn’t your bag, you can check out:
My Etsy Shop - The Realm of sAm - I have lots of goodies (and now stickers!) for sale, and if you let me know you are a Gatchaman fan when you make your purchase, I’ll make sure you get one of my Joe the Condor stickers. (I don’t sell licensed character stuff, but I had to buy 30 of them so I could put one on my iPad case 🤓.)
My Teepublic (Yay, it’s updated and curated!)
My Society6 (hahaha, when was the last time I was on this thing?)
My RedBubble (at least there is art in there. )
And last but not least, you can leave always me a tip on Ko-fi.
I don’t have a place setup for hosting the comic yet. If all else fails, I’ll just make a link to a downloadable pdf and set it loose on the internet. It’s gonna be free anyway.

Great new dynamic just dropped!
So I’m a big fan of mentor/student dynamics. (Not ships. Make it a ship and it’s gross.) Gandalf and Bilbo or Frodo, Dr. Nambu and the Science Ninja Team, Merlin and Arthur, Obi-Wan and Luke, you know what I’m talking about. Classic Hero’s Journey coming-of-age presents us with an adult mentor and a child or teen hero, or at least young person, where the mentor gets taken out of the plot at some point so that the hero can face the bad guys without the backup of the mentor. I’ve seen some nifty variations on this, such as “the mentor cannot physically do anything to help the hero, and then doesn’t get taken out until after the hero wins, and then the hero goes on a quest to rescue the mentor.”
Well, I have just read a book with a completely new mentor/student dynamic. It’s “what if the teen hero’s mentor is, like, 20, and totally done with this mentoring bullshit but they’re kind of obligated by their own code of honor because it’s their fault the teen hero is even in this situation and also the hero saved their life.” Bonus points for the mentor actually being the main antagonist in the first half of the book!
It doesn’t hurt that the mentor’s kind of an abrasive asshole, too. Or that it could be argued that the plot of the book actually makes the mentor the hero of the more traditional fantasy story, and the whole reason the protagonist is the hero instead is that we’re reading his version of the story, which revolves around him rather than The Deal With The Devil That Goes Horribly Wrong And Now The Wizard Who Stands For Freedom Must Redeem Himself By Destroying The Devil and The Oppression He Made a Deal With The Devil To Stop. Like -- I don’t mind that the story is instead about a nerdy teenage boy who gets sucked into an adventure by accident, but one could make the argument that the story that the mentor is the hero of is equally interesting.
I’m going to put the name of the book behind a spoiler cut, which is kind of backwards because I’ve just spoiled its plot and you’d think I’d put the spoilers behind the cut and not the book’s name, but this way if you don’t like spoilers you can go on your merry way and maybe you’ll accidentally encounter the book and not know it’s the one I’m talking about. If you don’t care so much about spoilers and you want to see the book I’m talking about, though, click the readmore.
It’s called “How I Magically Messed Up My Life In Four Freakin’ Days” by Megan O’Russell. The dynamic I’m talking about takes pretty much the whole book to establish, though, and now I’m going into the second book cold, hoping the author does not in fact remove the mentor from the plot.

Thunderbirds/Gatchaman crossover intrigues me immensely!
Hello. Thank you for asking about this one. This is an idea that both excites and scares me. I really want to write a story that combines both of my favourite shows, but I have a feeling that it's going to end up being long, and getting anything wrong could annoy readers from either or both fandoms!
This is one that's still only in rough notes, but the basic premise is that Virgil and Thunderbird Two somehow wind up in the Gatchaman universe - probably involving some inter-dimensional portal that is only a vague idea at the moment!
This way I get to explain everything through Virgil's eyes as he finds the similarities and stark differences between IR and his family vs this team of 5 and their amazing vehicles, their secret "island" base in the Pacific and the scientific/technological organisation that backs them.
Virgil will quickly bond with Ryu over piloting fast, but heavy, large aircraft. He'll see similarities between Ken and Scott, recognise the brother/sister relationship between Jun and Jinpei, and wonder about Joe's reluctance to trust anyone except his team who he trusts implicitly and protects fiercely.
There will be comparisons made between Jinpei and Alan - wanting to be cool/popular, and feeling the need to prove themselves, to measure up to the teammates/family they idolise.
Virgil and Jun will have a chance to talk about the way the boys tease her about her cooking (which is no where near as bad as Grandma's!).
And while Virgil is here, working with Dr Nambu to find a way back home, Brains and the rest of his family are figuring out what happened and trying to work out how to find him and get him back.
The reason any of the Science Ninja Team trust Virgil and try to help him, rather than continuing to suspect he might be some kind of Gallactor spy of failed experiment is because Dr Nambu has heard of the Thunderbirds. He shows Virgil an old TV show where all the tech is the same kind of retro-futuristic gear he sees around him in the Gatchverse (massive computers, data stored on tapes of various sizes and design, lots of buttons and levers and coloured lights . . .) and the people are all puppets. He's kind of gobsmacked about the details that are correct, but also struck by how much is different from what he knows back home.
When he finally gets home to tell the tale of all he's seen Grandma reveals that she has a vague memory of seeing something like that when she was very little . . . and after a quick archive search finds the anime of Battle of the Planets. The names are different, and the team travels to space, and the bad guys are Spectra not Gallactor, but it's similar enough for Virgil to say "that's them!"
(Sorry, that became a bit of a ramble!)
Thanks for the ask!!

Remember that time when I said I had a love-hate relationship with terminal illness used in fiction?
Well the love kicked in.
I wrote this (a few of my friends have already seen this hahaha) but I worked up the nerve to post it here.
and of course this is my coping mechanism against the hell onslaught that is my university life right now and the upcoming two parter that are both determined to wreck my life.
It’s a drabble/fanfic inspired by one of my favorite terminal illness AU’s adapted for my favorite Star Trek Captain atm: Philippa Georgiou + it has Keyla and Admiral Cornwell rn (Michael’s in it but Im too shy to show that part)
A little background: Its an AU (still set in the future) where Philippa is an award winning author (not sure of what yet), Keyla is her PA, Katrina is her doctor (yes, I know she’s not that type of doctor but for the sake of it let’s pretend she is).
Philippa paces the length of the hotel room she's been set up at. There's only a few hours until the conference and her presentation and she can't help the feeling of anxiety creeping up her throat. Her heart is hammering in her chest and she could feel the cold sweat slick down her back. She tries to focus on the sounds of her feet meeting the carpeted floor of her hotel room, creating soft thumping sounds and reverting back at her. She knows she shouldn't be this nervous as she's done this before.
Keyla enters the room with a soft swish of the door sliding open, her hands are full of padds containing the notes of her presentation and communication files from the conference executives detailing the schedule of the day. She's all too occupied with her hands, but a fleeting look to her boss makes her place the padds down and hand her a glass of water instead.
"You need to drink." Keyla reminds her. "You look pale."
"I'm always pale." Philippa murmurs behind her glass. She quickly finishes the water — the cool liquid soothing her parched throat. It does nothing for her nerves, though.
"You also need to calm down." Keyla looks up from one of the padds. Philippa hasn't noticed that she has already started filling through them. "You'll do great."
Philippa nods. She starts walking again, but decided to abandon her pacing for a comfortable chair near Keyla. She picks up one of the padds — or tries to — her hands are shaking terribly and the padd almost slips from her hands. Keyla's insane reflexes move lightning quick and saved the padd from its untimely demise. Philippa doesn't look up, knowing Keyla's eyes are most likely full of worry as usual. She clutches her hand instead, fisting them together to stop them from shaking.
"You feel okay?" Keyla asks instead. "Maybe we should go see Dr. Nambue before your presentation."
"I feel fine, probably just nervous." She automatically replies, mustering a small smile for her assistant. She probably looks not very convincing, because Keyla's arms cross on top of her chest and looks at her inquisitively. At her look, Philippa finds herself chucking at her assistant.
She pats her assistant's hand and Keyla rewards her with a tentative smile before shaking her head and goes back to the padds. Philippa stands to move to the bathroom, intent on getting ready, but her knees suddenly turned to jello and she feels herself falling.
"Philippa?" Everything's a bit fuzzy and confusing, but Keyla's worried face and voice cuts through the foggy faze. Her body feels strangely foreign  —  like she's having an out of body experience. "Can you hear me?"
She tries to answer, but she hears that it comes out in grunts. She also tries to get up — or move at all — but her body is paralyzed. Her chest suddenly spikes with pain, her hand moves to clutch her chest involuntarily. She curls up into a fetal position in a vain attempt to relieve the pain. It's almost all consuming, there's nothing else to note but her chest threatening to burst out of its cavity. Faraway, she can hear Keyla's frantic tones, but the pull of unconsciousness overpowers her and she sinks into darkness.
------------
"I think she should come back to DC, I can arrange for a discrete medical transport—" Philippa awakens to a distinct commanding tone and the hum of a computer nearby. She quickly takes in her surroundings, the window next to her shines some of the sun on her face and the soft and steady beat of the monitors click in her ears. She tries to gulp, but finds her throat incredibly dry. She raises her hands for only it brush against the cold plastic of an oxygen mask propped on her face.
"Hey Pippa." The voice from the computer speaks.  Philippa turns to face Kat's holographic form, her face full of worry. "How are you feeling?"
She tries to answer but coughs instead. She feels someone hand her a glass of water with a straw and she unclasps the oxygen mask as she sips greedily. The person pulls away her cup almost too soon and disengages her oxygen mask. Philippa spies a flash of red hair — Keyla — as she moves to replace the mask with a nasal cannula.
"Like shit." She manages after Keyla adjusts her cannula. Her voice is incredibly raspy to her ears and she could see Keyla grimace as she spoke.
"You gave us quite the scare there." Kat says, her arms crossing in front of her chest. She's in her medical whites, which would suggest that she's in the hospital working instead of her personal office.
She's here as her doctor then, not as her friend.
"What happened?" She asks, but she turns to Keyla. Hearing it from Kat just makes it more morbid— or real. She may not be a doctor, but she understands the language of medicine better than average people. How couldn't she? Spending more than enough years of her life ridden with this disease.
Keyla shrugs, however, and turns to Kat's hologram. Philippa finds her friend's face turn mournful for a split second, before the mask of the cool and composed Dr. Cornwell takes over.
"You collapsed." Kat says. "We're still looking up what caused it, but it seems like your usual episode. All the markers are the same, except for the intense chest pain. We'll have to take some scans to be sure."
Philippa looks at her hands, one of them snaked with wires from numerous IV treatments. Her finger is clipped with a oximeter, but she doesn't feel the usual biting sensation it often leaves on her. She doesn't look back at Kat, but instead buries herself deeper into the biobed. She must have looked devastated, because Kat's tones become softer as she spoke.
"It's going to be okay, Pip." She concludes. "Do you want to come back here?"
She shakes her head. "I need to finish the conference."
Kat nods, but speaks when she sees Philippa not meeting her gaze. "Okay. You can get discharged if your condition continues to improve."
"Thanks, Kat." Philippa mutters from her spot, before turning her head away completely.
Katrina and Keyla share a look. Kat sighs, loud enough for the comm to pick it up and transmit it over.
"Get some rest." The comm clicks off.

OMGs! Someone tell my Bitch Muse to sit the hell down and shut the fuck up!!
I mean, why the sudden desire to write Milippa (both Prime! and MU!Georgiou) Outsider PoV fic?
Written from the PoV of Keyla Detmer, Katrina Cornwell, Dr Anton Nambue, Christopher Pike, and Dr Tracy Pollard - with the caveat that *everyone else* realises they’re in love, but they don’t.

From yesterday. Well. Technically the day before because I was late posting it on IG too. This site is such a mess anyway...
I’m feeling a bit braver at the moment so here is something recent. Yesterday I did a warm up sketch/character test/body language and expression study for Dr. Nambu. Unfortunately, after spending an hour and a half using this to warm up and get myself into a creative mindset, I wasn’t able to get back to my drawing table for anything else... *grumble* Anyway, I worked off a screenshot from EP 38. (The one with the dinosaurs that turn into mecha monster chess pieces! 🤓) I lost the original camera angle from the screenshot though, it should be lower. Not too shabby for my first official attempt at drawing the Doctor.

I love the concept art for the unreleased 1998 Gatchaman remake. Some of it is pretty iffy and unloyal to the original, but I wish it would have come out. Dreams can sometimes only be dreams, though...
