Experts demand release of guidelines for stem cell therapy

Indian Society of Regenerative Sciences (ISRS) has demanded from the Union Health Ministry to release guidelines and Standard Operative Procedures for the treatment of different diseases which can be effectively treated by cell therapy and stem cell therapy.

They also demanded that cell therapy as well as stem cell therapy should also be included in Ayushman Bharat Yojna to enable the poor to get access to treatment.

“A list of practices and procedures of treatment (through the cell and stem cell therapy) and SOPs has been prepared but they have been pending since last year with the Director General of Health Services. We demand this should be released,” Dr Alok Sharma, President, ISRS said.

“The list emphasizes who can do these procedures and where these procedures can be done and what should be a laboratory,” Dr. Sharma added.

Dr. BS Rajput, Vice President, ISRS, said, “We appeal to Prime Minister and Health Minister to release the SOP and list of practices and procedures involving cell or stem cell-based preparations for therapeutic purposes as identified by experts which have already been prepared in January 2022 but have not been released for over a year. “

“This already prepared SOP and the list should be released at the earliest as this will support and encourage doctors from across the country to offer this innovative treatment. This will benefit crores of patients in particular, 2.68 crore Divyang citizens to help them recover from their diseases and disabilities.”

The ISRS further said that there is ample evidence suggesting that cell and stem cell therapy can be effective in various life-threatening diseases and the diseases which trigger lifelong disability.

According to the Indian Society of Regenerative Sciences, the world’s first scientific paper on cell therapy in autism has been published in India. Similarly, there are 47 publications on cerebral palsy showing positive results of stem cell therapy in cerebral palsy. “There are diseases in which death is certain, like muscular dystrophy. We have treated thousands of patients. Their lives have been saved and they are living normal lives,” Dr Sharma said.

“It has been found effective in infertility. We can avoid test tube babies if we adopt this treatment. This improves fertility,” Dr. Sharma pointed out.

“We also want this treatment to be included under the Ayushman Bharat scheme so that the poor can get access to this treatment, but first, its list and SOPs should be released. These SOPs and guidelines can clear who can get this treatment or not,” Dr. Sharma said.
