Invitation—Book Signing with Dan Colen at Gagosian Shop, New York
February 20, 2020
Tumblr media
Book Signing DAN COLEN High Noon Saturday, March 7, 3–4pm Gagosian Shop, 976 Madison Avenue, New York __________ Gagosian Shop is pleased to host a book signing with Dan Colen to celebrate the publication of High Noon, a catalogue of his Desert Paintings (2015–19). Exhibited at Gagosian Beverly Hills in 2018, these large-scale paintings are lush yet schematic interpretations of the arid landscapes from Chuck Jones’s animated shorts featuring Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. The volume also documents two new performances interrogating the conventions of the Hollywood cowboy, At Least They Died Together and Carry On Cowboy (both 2018), which Colen created in collaboration with choreographer Dimitri Chamblas and presented in the gallery with the paintings as backdrop. An essay by curator Douglas Fogle places the Desert Paintings in dialogue with Waiting for Godot, Barnett Newman’s “zips,” and iconic westerns such as The Searchers, and a conversation between Colen and Chamblas, moderated by Fogle, delves into their collaboration and choreographic process. To attend the free event, RSVP to [email protected]. Space is limited. About the Book Text by Douglas Fogle; interview with Dan Colen, Dimitri Chamblas, and Douglas Fogle Published by Gagosian in association with Rizzoli Format: Hardcover Size: 12 3/4 × 10 inches (32.7 × 25.4 cm) Pages: 100 pages ISBN: 978-0-8478-6816-2 Price: $80 USD

Andy Warhol. Estrella Oscura | Museo Jumex
Andy Warhol. Estrella Oscura | Museo Jumex

Cairo - Julie Mehretu | The Broad
Tumblr media
Julie Mehretu
Born 1970, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Lives and works in New York, NY, USA.
Cairo, 2013. Ink and acrylic on canvas, 300.4 x 729 cm.
"Julie Mehretu's dynamic abstract paintings, composed of cartographic images and energetic mark making , are layered in complex ways to create worlds where, as the curator Douglas Fogle has stated, 'historical and fictional landscapes collide.'"
Maps, charts, architectural renderings, and elements of pop culture are elements that make up her work. Her work of the early 2000's was primarily concerned with architecture as a medium of social history and power, depicting built environments such as airports, arenas, malls, and mosques, her recent work has become more abstract, absorbing aspects of graffiti, mythology, and world events.
Mehretu's mark making is of specific interest to me and how she creates different plains through layering and spatial awareness within the confines of her canvas. The awareness of mark and collections of marks grouped together is something that I am attempting to acheive in my painting. Mehretu works on a big scale which I am striving to work more towards also, at least scale up my paintings to something a little bigger than what I have been working on this semester.

Statehood: What It Is, And Who Gets It
By Charles Schott, University of Iowa Class of 2020
June 25, 2020
Tumblr media
Today, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill to grant statehood to Washington, D.C. This bill was submitted to Congress after a recent revitalization of the desire for statehood within residents of the area, through police measures taken against them during protests as well as inefficient provisions of PPE and other equipment during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. If the bill were to pass, Washington D.C. would take the state name “Washington, Douglas Commonwealth”, named after President George Washington and Maryland abolitionist Frederick Douglass. This would be the first statehood granted since Hawaii’s, in 1959.
Currently, the residents of Washington D.C. pay taxes, serve in the military, and contribute to the economy in the same way all other US residents do. However, Washington D.C. doesn’t have access to any form of effective representation within the government itself: while allowed a non-voting delegate within Congress, the residents have no way of expressing their will in legislative matters. Many residents believe that this is a mirrored, modern version of the problem the original American colonists dealt with before the Revolutionary war: taxation without representation. If given statehood, Washington D.C. would be given senators and representatives within Congress, just like any other state. Most support for the passage of the bill is based upon relieving this injustice to the citizens within Washington D.C.
Many are worried, however. Because of the demographics of those living within the D.C. area, the created seats in Congress are expected to be given to Democrats. The Republican-controlled Senate, as well as the current Republican president, aren’t eager to grant statehood that would give Democrats more seats within the government. This reasoning is purely political, of course, but Republicans also cite the original intent of the creation of the D.C. area as an argument against statehood. Washington D.C. was specifically created to house the U.S. government; giving the area statehood, they argue, would simply give the government itself more power.
So, how and when is statehood normally granted? Typically, the residents of a territory declare their intent to become a state. Then, they must be given approval by Congress, which follows a few rough guidelines in the passage of statehood. Congress alone has the power to approve statehoods, and once states are approved, no governmental power short of succession from the Union can take away the state status. The stated process, however, has rarely been fully followed; in practice each state after the first 13 was admitted upon a slightly different basis.
Iowa, for example, held a convention in which a proposed state constitution was drawn up. This was sent to Congress, who adjusted the borders of the proposed state and then passed the bill. Residents of Iowa weren’t happy with this adjustment, however; instead of accepting the revision, they held a second convention and rewrote the state constitution, setting the current state boundaries, and once more sent it to Congress. This time, Congress approved, and within the year Iowa was formally recognized as a U.S. State.
On the other end of the spectrum, Tennessee was formally designated as a state after writing a state Constitution, electing senators to Congress, and simply declaring itself a state. Four more states would eventually use a similar strategy.
Additionally, political maneuverings have also sometimes been at the heart of granting statehood. Alaska and Hawaii were both admitted into the Union at least partly on this basis. When Hawaii applied for statehood, it was thought that it would be a strong Republican state. Democrats insisted that Alaska, at the time assumed to be a democrat-leaning territory, be granted statehood first. Today, Alaska’s elected officers are all Republicans, while Hawaii has Democrats in office.
Because of such history, the worries about the Senate balking the passage of this bill carries weight. Many believe that such actions on the part of the Senate would be grossly immoral or unjust, but similar actions have been taken to prevent statehoods to other territories in the past. Similar measures are suspected to have been at play against past attempts at statehood by Puerto Rico, another U.S. territory that fails to receive proper aid after disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and the coronavirus. This territory is also suspected to lean heavily towards the Democratic Party, and thus would have a difficult time attaining statehood under the current Congressional majorities.
Residents of Washington D.C. and other Democrats are urging Republicans in the Senate to vote on the bill without bias, but such action isn’t expected to occur.

Press Release:
Interface Gallery is pleased to present No Part Left Out, featuring work by Rebeca Bollinger, June Crespo and Miguel Marina. As this exhibition opens, the grey branches of leafless trees stand starkly in clear winter light. There is a sense that life energy is building beneath the surfaces of everything.
In their explorations of dust, the void, and silence, artists such as Duchamp, Yves Klein and John Cage embraced impermanence and emptiness as fertile ground, containing infinite possibility. They recognized the integral relationship between absence and presence. As Cage wrote in his Lecture on Something (1951), “something and nothing are not opposed to each other but need each other to keep on going…”  (1)
Works presented in this exhibition evoke impermanence, absence and loss. Rebeca Bollinger’s bronze bouquet is cast from flowers now long gone. June Crespo’s concrete cast of a radiator lies cold on the floor, poignantly recalling a body drained of heat. Yet these absences bring to mind the living flower, the warm body – and they  heighten our awareness of our own embodied presence.
Barely legible gestures appearing and disappearing on the surface of Miguel Marina’s paintings suggest the passage of time. Yet, they also offer us a formless space that is infinitely open. Something is always ending, yet something new is always arising.
