Don’t know the date, but I’ll see what I can do to reconstruct the days to arrive at it. We flew out of Newburgh Airport at around 8 PM on Sept. 27. Norwegian Airlines. Last year we flew with them to the UK and they are crap, tiny seats, but we got lucky this year and the seat next to us was empty, so Mimi could stretch her long legs. At the end of the flight her legs didn’t bother her like last year, so we started the trip on a plus.

We arrived at Shannon Airport at 8AM the next morning, due to the flight and the time difference. Getting into Ireland was a breeze. Shannon is small (not as small as Stewart Airport in Newburgh, but small.

We had to wait a few hours to get our rental car (Dan Dooley Rentals) so we ate at the airport. We were pretty tired already.

The rental car experience was nice. We told them we’d be bringing the car back late on the last day, and they said, “No worries, we won’t charge you.” Then they upgraded our car for free. Good thing. Because we can barely fit into the Ford Peanut (or whatever it is) as it is.

Drove around the lot three or four times to get a feel for driving on the left with a manual shift, and off we went to Adare, the most picturesque village in Ireland (much overrated and overrun with tourists.) By this time the weather had turned to crap, but we were determined to take a tour of Desmond Castle. We bought Ireland Heritage passes (which we got cheap because the tourist bureau had run out of the new ones, and only had old ones, and senior passes at that. So they sold them to us for the old, senior, price. Good deal, but this “Senior” thing is a little unnerving. As was the driving for the first two days. More on this in a bit.

The weather turned better a few hours later, in time for the last Desmond Castle tour. It was really good. Castle was in ruins, but the guide was droll and informed. Found out how Adare was one of the few towns that was spared the wrath of the British due to the Earl of the town being really humane. Nice. Reading a bit of Irish history, I feel that this piece of real estate has about the most fucked up history I know of. So convoluted.

Also reading and listening to Irish (it’s called “Irish” not “Gaelic”) language. Just learning phrases is not too bad, but if you think the French spell things weird, you ain’t read nuthin’ yet.

After Adare ,we drove a few kilometers to Patrickswell, where our first AirBnB was. Anne was our host. A nice older woman with a very clean place and a good bed. We’d gotten there late, and tired.
