Ghibli Park is packed. The Japanese hotspot is in only its sixth month of operation, and its main area, Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse, is heaving with guests eager to run through the themed playgrounds, grab a photo with Spirited Away’s No-Face, or see an exclusive short film in the 170-seat screening theater. Beyond the building, tourists stream to the two other outdoors areas, Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest, both located within the nature-framed boundaries of Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park.

Studio Ghibli Park
Hello everyone, today began with a bit of an earlier start as we needed to be in Nagoya by 11, which is about 40 minutes away by Bullet train, and then another 30 to get to Ghibli Park. Once we got off at our stop near Ghibli park, we were confused as to why it was a 25 minute walk to actually get to the main area where the Park is located, as surely there was a closer stop. After looking at the map we found that there was in fact a closer station we could have gotten off at which would have been more convenient so we planned to do that on the way back. I had been looking forward to going to Studio Ghibli park for a while, as we had to purchase the tickets like 2 months in advance as they sell out extremely fast due to the popularity. Going into it I was not sure what to expect, but I am a fan of many of the Studio Ghibli movies and felt that visiting the park would be a great time.
We were a bit taken aback by the distance at which we had to walk through the park but I don’t mind walking much and wasn’t too upset by it. There was also a massive lake in the middle that was covered with water lilies which was very pretty overall. After walking around for a bit we found the main Studio Ghibli Park Warehouse, which I honestly had no idea what it may entail as most of the stuff here is kept as a semi secret and you can’t even take pictures of many of the exhibits. We finally got inside and I was pretty happy with the results, there were definitely a ton of people waiting in lines that I didn’t have a clue as to where they lead.
There were many areas with recreated scenes and settings from a ton of the movies, which felt cool to get to step into some of my favorite movies. Though I will say I was a bit let down that most things here are just photo opportunities, as I assumed it would be more akin to a theme park. We went to the Porco Rosso themed restaurant here where we both ordered the Miso Katsu, which I was told the previous I should try when in Nagoya as it is the regions specialty dish. Miso katsu is a breaded and fried pork cutlet which then has a rich hatcho miso sauce poured over top. The food was actually pretty tasty and oddly enough came on a slide of ciabatta bread, which i wasn’t upset about by any means.
Following our meal we walked through the warehouse area and got lots of great pictures, seeing all of the recreated scenes was a lot of fun. I also got a new hat, which is themed after Howls Moving Castle, and has an embroidered image of Turnip Head from the movie and has the same two antenna things as Howls Castle. I had been looking for a hat since coming to Japan so I’m glad to finally have one.
After getting more pictures we walked to the outside areas which included the Valley of Witches from Kiki’s Delivery Service, Dondoko Forest from My Neighbor Totoro, and Mononoke Village from Princess Mononoke. Though at each of these places there was not a ton to do and they were very far apart so it was a lot of walking to basically look at something, take a photo and then move on.
Although it wasn’t exactly as I anticipated, I still had a pretty good time and enjoyed experiencing it with my sister, as I would feel a ton of FOMO had I not gone. After finishing up with the park, feeling sweaty with tired legs and feet we headed back to Kyoto, this time taking the closer station which didn’t pop up on google maps as an option for some reason. Once we were back in Kyoto we rested for a bit before going out to do some shopping. We then got dinner at Coco Ichibanya again (not even King Arthur could pull me away from the arms of Coco Ichibanya) and it was extra delicious today, they must have prepared a fresh batch of curry in anticipation of my arrival. After eating and talking for a while we went to Round One to play some Maimai, and we are both getting pretty good, as I am going hard on the expert levels and just hit a respectable rating of over 7000. I’m going to be so sad to go back to America and be thousands of miles away from the closest Maimai machine.
Following some intense Maimai we headed back to the hotel and I freshened up before going back out to meet my friend and hangout for the night. We ended up at a small bar and made friends with a group of 2 Japanese guys and a girl, a French guy and a Korean guy who all live in Kyoto, it was an interesting motley crew. They were all a lot of fun and it’s always great getting to hangout with local Japanese people, while they don’t speak too much English and I don’t speak much Japanese, we both end up learning things from each other and it’s always satisfying when we finally understand what the other person is saying. Since we were the only ones here and the other people were friends with the bartender, we were able to choose any songs we wanted and he turned the music up so we could dance and have ourselves a fun night. We also stumbled upon a dying Luna moth in the street which was a sad sight to see as they are such beautiful creatures. We decided to pick it up and let it lay to rest on some plants rather than being in the middle of the walkway getting stepped on.

So here’s a little update to our dream wonderland:
If you’re not completely caught up, let me give you a little crash course. In the year of 2017, Japanese Times announced the Studio Ghibli Theme Park project, the park was initially supposed to open to the public in the fall of 2020. But due to the pandemic construction was delayed and now the new opening date will be Fall of 2022.
The theme park will be located in Aichi Expo Commemorative Park; three areas in the park are under construction: the first attraction is “The Hill of Youth”, an inspiration from “Whisper of the Heart” and “Howls Moving Castle”; The Giant Warehouse inspired by “Spirited Away”;and lastly The Dondoko Forest inspired by “My Neighbor Totoro”. There are two areas who have yet to begin construction: Mononoke Village inspired by “Princess Mononoke” and the Witch Valley inspired by “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “Howls Moving Castle”.
Who would you bring along with you when the park opens?

Studio Ghibli Park opens in Japan
On November 1, the theme park of the legendary studio opened its doors in Aichi prefecture, a couple of hours from Tokyo by bullet train.
The construction, which began in 2020, now houses different areas inspired by places seen in the studio's feature films, these are: "Ghibli's Grand Warehouse," "Hill of Youth" and "Dondoko Forest" and two sectors not yet inaugurated that are " Mononoke Village" and "The Valley of the Witches"
At the moment, in these places we can find the characters, objects and buildings of Ghibli movies such as Howl's Moving Castle, Whisper of the Heart, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Castle in the Sky.
It is worth mentioning that the park does not have major attractions or rides, this is due to the fact that its purpose is to "take a stroll, feel the wind, and discover the wonders" as described on the website.
The park has been designed in a sustainable way and under the watchful eye of Hayao Miyazaki, for this reason the land of the Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park was occupied instead of starting somewhere else and from scratch. The park lands were adapted to accommodate the Ghibli theme without cutting down a single tree.
Tickets are sold out for November and will go on sale overseas in mid-January 2023.

Ghibli Park Opens Theme Park Entrance Early for Free to All
Construction on Studio Ghibli's Aichi-based theme park continues ahead of its November 1 opening but ahead of schedule, the 19th Century inspired "Elevator Tower" entrance to Ghibli Park was completed and opened to the public free of charge. Ghibli showcased the building in a series of tweets explaining that the 19th Century aesthetic was the influence on how Laputa: Castle in the Sky looked.

The building is open now to those who visit the Aichi Earth Expo Memorial Park in Aichi prefecture for free, while the rest of Ghibli Park is set to open on November 1 with the Ghibli's Grand Warehouse area, the Hill of Youth, and the Dondoko Forest. The second stage of the park's opening, which includes the Valley of the Witches and Mononoke Village, isn't yet dated.

Read the full article

In 2022 Studio Ghibli Theme Park Will Open, And Here Are The Visualizations
Hayao Miyazaki’s fans will probably be thrilled to hear that the magical world of the famous Japanese animator is finally coming to life. Hayao Miyazaki is the mastermind behind one of the most famous animation houses in the world – Studio Ghibli. You’ve probably seen at least some of the studio’s masterpieces, such as the Oscar-winning ‘Spirited Away’ or ‘My Neighbour Totoro.’ The theme park is set to open to the public in 2022. It will be built on the grounds of Aichi Commemorative Park in Nagakute city, according to the regional government.
Youth Hill Area

The park is a 500-acre lot that was previously used as the site for the World’s Fair in 2005. It is expected to bring Studio Ghibli to life in a way that allows visitors to also enjoy nature.
In the park, there is already a replica of the house from ‘My Neighbor Totoro,’ which was built for the 2005 World’s Fair.
Ghibli Large Warehouse Area
According to regional government representatives, the park is intended to be built “without impairing the function and the natural environment” while also making “effective use of unused land and existing facilities”. It will feature natural spaces as well as trails.
The amusement park will feature European-style brick buildings, which often appear in the studio’s films.
Witches’ Valley Area
For instance, the main gate will resemble the buildings from ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’. The park itself will be divided into five seperate areas – Youth Hill, Ghibli Large Warehouse, Mononoke’s Village, Dondoko Forest and Witches’ Valley areas.
Studio Ghibli’s park is also set to feature a recreation of the antique shop from ‘Whisper of the Heart’ and a Big Ghibli Warehouse with exhibition spaces, recreational areas and a theater.
Mononoke’s Village Area
Statues of the animal spirits that featured in the studio’s animations (spiders, boars and other creatures) will be placed across the park.
The park is expected to follow Ghibli Museum’s success, which was opened in Tokyo, in 2001. The museum includes an exhibition space, children’s learning facilities and a theater.
Dondoko Forest Area

The regional government is yet unsure about the cost of the project. The architects have not been confirmed yet, either.

Ghibli Park Updates Us With A Prototype of Howl's Moving Castle
While Ghibli Park is still a year and a bit away from opening its magical doors, a press conference was held on February 3 to update us on the parks progress and give more teases of what is to come from the first theme park based on the films from beloved anime studio Studio Ghibli.
youtube
We've seen some of these images before, but the renders of Ironworks from Princess Mononoke and Howl's Castle (which looks to be stationary) are new and I can not wait to see them in real life. Visitors to the park will even be able to go inside Howl's Castle and walk around, though I'd recommend not touching the fire, he gets a bit grouchy at that.
Both the new renders will be part of the second phase of Ghibli's Park opening in 2023, with the first phase, that features the Youth Hill area, the Great Ghibli Warehouse area, and the Dondoko Forest, opening in fall 2022.

New Concept Images of the Upcoming Studio Ghibli Theme Park Will See Spirited Away Come To Life
While the Studio Ghibli theme park is currently on track to open in 2022 on Aichi Prefecture, on February 5, the animation studio released some more concept images of the theme park showcasing areas inspired by the beloved anime films Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and The Cat Returns.
The first two concept images show off the Great Ghibli Warehouse area, which is inspired by Spirited Away and design motifs from Howl’s Moving Castle. The top image will be a restaurant alley meant to recreate the iconic dining area from Spirited Away. The bottom image shows the plaza area inside the Great Ghibli Warehouse. The yellow building will be a 170-seat theater, and the blue building will be part of a permanent exhibition area. These buildings were already part of the existing facilities of Aichi's Expo Park, which will be converted into a more Ghibli-esque style.
The next set of images are of the Youth Hill area with the top image showing a wide view of the area showing an elevator inspired by Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Howl’s Moving Castle, as well as the Cat’s Office attraction from The Cat Returns. The bottom images give a more close up look of the elevator.
Previously released images:
Alongside the Youth Hill area, and the Great Ghibli Warehouse area, the Dondoko Forest area will make up the trio of areas that will open with the park in Fall 2022. Two more areas, The Mononoke Village and The Valley of the Witch are planned to open in Fall 2023.
Ghibli Park, Inc, a joint venture between Studio Ghibli and Chunichi Shimbun newspaper estimates that the park will see around 1 million visitors – both domestic and international – in the first year, and around 1.8 million visitors when the park fully opens. To help with the increased flow of visitors to the area, the joint venture is working with Aichi Prefecture and local governments for a 1,500 capacity car park as well as new roads and traffic flow measures.
