I do use googledocs because it's convenient to be able to access it everywhere, and on my shitty little 10 year old chromebook, etc.
However, I also have a 4TB backup external hardrive that ALL my writing, marketing, author business, cover designs, and formatted files are kept.
I want to get a second one so I have a backup of the backup, but you cannot easily "lose" a backup hard drive or SSD of that size. It sits on my desk like a brick.
Did it cost a pretty penny? Yes. But I also don't have to worry (too much) about losing everything I've worked so hard on.
My computer died in 2021. And I couldn't afford to replace it or repair it. But I could plug my external drive into my laptop and have access to all my files.
I am begging people to use LibreOffice and personal storage devices like hard drives or USB sticks instead of relying 100% on Google Docs. LibreOffice is free and open-source, it saves files to your own computer, and it lets you save as many different file types. You can write in it, format ebooks in it, and do everything you might possibly need to do as a writer.
"Oh, but I'll lose my USB stick--" Fine, back things up in whatever cloud you use as a form of extra protection, but you should also try your absolute damnedest to also put them on some form of storage that isn't a cloud.
I know it's not accessible to everyone, but if you at all have the ability, don't rely on shit that lives on other people's computers. Especially with everything going on with AI theft and aggressive censorship of adult media. If you don't store your files on your own personal computer that you have control over, your files aren't fully yours, and they're at the whims of whoever owns the cloud.
Learn where your files are stored and how to access them. Get into the habit of backing up your files to your own personal storage. Even if you're not up for intense tech research and you don't care about how the computer actually works, please stop letting your art live in corporate clouds.

What kinda technology do people use to listen to music in the locality space setting? Is it the same as irl or is there cool sci-fi technology for it, or both? Is it different for pajiir and delphonus?
This is such a good question, Kendrick, and it helped me iron out some worldbuilding thoughts about warps. I'm guessing this came from my ask answer about Pat's old stuff, which got me kind of stuck to start - the reason he has old music stuff is because in Old Canon he was the music guy, king of the radio. The canon was weird back then, with Spinder's whole family being faeries living on Earth. I believe canonically Spinder was born in 1958, so radio and record players were a big part of his childhood. But factoring in all of the locality space worldbuilding, and keeping my timeline straight, I think it's a little more complicated.
The space era that they live in, with relatively easy access to space and permawarps, came to be about 90-100 years ago, which means that's about when there started to be a major shift in music delivery, because you could then receive music via warp from just about anywhere. I think there was already essentially a galaxy-sized Napster network, because warp witches and also starships existed before the launch era, but in terms of radio/streaming formats that's when things really took off. The only problem was you needed a warp receiver, and at first the only stable mechanical warps were those generated by enchanted machine song, which meant that all of your music was delivered with extra noise, something like how CRT TVs make high-pitched whining noises. Not ideal, but extremely popular. Then someone figured out how to besmallen the technology used for warp gates, and true hi-fi warp radio was born. Which is a long-winded way of saying by the time Pat was born 40 years ago this was a solved problem. The thing is, I always imagined him having vintage stuff because it's stuff from when he grew up, not because he's a collector (though he could be that too). So what makes his music paraphernalia outdated?
Partly it's that it still relies on midsize receivers, which are still small enough to fit in a stereo, but fill a very different niche than the much smaller receivers that became available when he was a teenager and that he probably still owns instances of. I also think he's kind of a nerd about music stuff and was into amateur radio, warp and otherwise, for a while, so he has that stuff too. Also, despite the fact that magic allows most ship environments to be fairly planet-like, oh boy is it easy to market a music storage format to planetsiders based on the fact that it could work in zero g. Don't ask me how it works in zero g, but it does, somehow. Maybe not even well, because that's not the point - 99% of buyers are going to be using it in an environment with gravity. But in general formats did get hardier. I think it would be extremely funny if current music storage formats are just like. cuboids. and you put them in the player slot and its suspension-laser-refraction array can read a shit ton of data out of it, sort of like encoding things in diamonds. I'm not totally sure about that one but making the jump from "space CD" to "music cube" or something similar would make a lot of stuff outdated. So I guess to answer your second question it's kind of the same, especially for planetsiders (radio waves never became obsolete &c.) but there's some weird scifi stuff in there somewhere beyond warp receivers, which are pretty everyday.
Now for Pajiir and Delphonus I do actually have a more solid answer, which is: it's mostly the same as real life, with some 1920s-30s flavoring, though a lot of technology is circuit mycelium on the inside, and the internet has been around a whole lot longer so the concept of streaming/digital files/internet radio is even more established. That said, there is one fictional format that actually is integral to the whole plot of Icepith: the twist. (I swear I had a cooler name for it but this works.) The basic concept is that pieces of music tracks are recorded on metal wires and twisted together as essentially an industrial cable segment. A player can play them all in tandem, but importantly, you can untwist the twist and replace parts of it, which makes remixing easy and has led to a huge remixing culture among imbrath (the underground bat people, like Rolf), and by extension nswl. This is the basis of Snap and Rolf's doomed music career, and of Oruga's pirating. Rolf's friends/lovers who supply Oruga are wire producers.
#one day I'm gonna talk about imbra culture. it's not even super duper built out I just enjoy it#set: locality space#set: pajiir and delphonus#c: Pat#asks

How WebP (and JPEG XL) is saving me tons of storage
(8 minutes read)
In this article, I will cover the underappreciated WebP digital image format as well as how I found its usefulness for me to take over even less storage, and also JPEG XL to some extent. This will cover my history with it as well as its perks over the common formats found on the web, and probably give you an important efficiency advice.
So, if someone mentions you the name "WebP", how would you react? The answer I'd expect would be either:
you simply have never heard of it before;
you actually did, but you've complained about its problems at least once and, as a result, always viewed it negatively;
you are not too annoyed by it, but you just don't know its point for existing in the first place.
I actually understand all of that. Back then, when the software I used couldn't take advantage of the image, just like many others, I also had a feeling that it was useless, so I could relate. I'd just convert it into either a PNG or a JPEG, both of which were formats that I used the most back then. I felt as if they are the easiest to pick up thanks to their extremely wide software compatibility. As a result, I used PNG, for Portable Network Graphics, the lossless compression format for much of my digital drawings, and JPEG, for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the ancient lossy compression format for highly-detailed images to prevent them from taking up too much space.
Initially, these formats looked pretty fine to me, since I used to export very light images only, which meant I didn't have to worry much about storage use. The images often weighed between 100 kB and 1 MB, on a 1 TB hard disk, so I could save hundreds of thousands of them only on that disk. However, as I started exporting artwork with higher resolutions and detail simultaneously, storage use became a problem for me. Some of them began to weigh at least 10 MB when encoded into PNGs. JPEG also had big issues that I noticed later on; its very ancient compression algorithm meant that, while I also used it to compensate for large images to be able to upload them faster, they become garbled as a result of artifacts appearing from the encoding. Finally, this year is where I began to think that it was time for an ultimate change to see if I could fix them all, and indeed there were ways.
Looking up information wasn't so hard, after all
After at least five years of relying on the most popular formats, JPEG and PNG, I began thinking that perhaps they weren't actually the best. The amount of times I used them throughout my life made me realize that I should start trying out alternatives. So by searching for them, what I ended up often seeing is the main point of this article: WebP, maintained by engineers at Google.
I actually read a few times about that format before then. The only thing I learned from it back then was that it could offer better compression than JPEG, which I initially neglected because of my previous experiences with it that I already mentioned. For a few years, I never really cared about it, until my curiosity for it finally rose and I realized that I was probably underestimating its value. After I read more about it, I was thrilled to see that it could also offer a better lossless compression than PNG, but I simply kept that in mind since I needed to wait before trying it out and adopting it entirely. Alongside WebP, I came across the JPEG XL format, announced by its developers (who were also behind the legacy JPEG) to be the universal replacement for the current major image formats, which is hard to dream of, but it's indeed interesting to know how it could succeed. Sometimes I saw AVIF alongside, but I never saw any interest in it.
With that in mind, I first wanted to take JPEG XL in priority, after comparing two images encoded in the former and WebP side-by-side. and noticing that JPEG XL's compression outperformed WebP, which is a huge comparison to both PNG and JPEG. Sadly, due to the lack of support for it which may be addressed in the future, I decided to go for the more universal WebP instead. Needless to say, I still had really good times with it, even if I wanted the other alternative, which is not a big deal for now.
The perks of WebP to know
Being designed differently than PNG and JPEG, but also much later compared to them, WebP looks to address their issues and essentially become superior to them in several ways. It's actually a mix between both formats, meaning it can perform both lossy and lossless compression, with lossy meaning that artifacts will appear on the image, with their visibility depending on the compression strength, and lossless meaning that all detail will be kept on the image while still reducing its size, only less than lossy.
But it's not just that! WebP also has the following strengths:
Alpha blending, that is partial and full transparency, adopted by PNG;
Animation, adopted by PNG (did you know that?) and GIF;
Being an open format, letting anyone contribute to its development at any will (a rare Google W, by the way);
Less visible artifacts seen on lossy images, assuming that it has a similar size to the same image rendered in JPEG (demonstrated in the image above);
Stronger lossless compression than PNG (which I have bragging rights for);
A compatibility with several color spaces;
Oddly enough, "presets" (available only on some encoders), which seem to change the way images should be rendered...
...all of which can be combined together in a single image, even for animations. This is much more than what most other raster image formats offer, so with that single format, you can take advantage of its huge flexibility for multiple purposes! An amount of perks that is pretty outstanding, to say the least.
I tested this format out on a entire folder in which I kept fanart, most of which were PNGs. After converting them into WebP, and although it took a long time because of how large those images were in the first place, it resulted into about 50% of data being removed! So when considering that a collection of PNGs has a total of 1 GB of data, it's easy to notice how big of a difference 500 MB is compared to the former.
Conclusion
Despite what it seems to be for most people, WebP is a highly practical format. While its incompatibility with some popular software could be a deal-breaker for some, it still fares pretty strong with its multitude of features all combined together. While I am not convincing anyone reading this to immediately transition to that format as it could lead to some issues, it does deserve to be tested out by the average user to see how well it performs for them! Personally, WebP has helped me a lot for my main use cases, and while I was not in any tight situation before thinking of moving into it, I could definitely say it would let me avoid dealing with that for a much longer time.
If you appreciated WebP, that said, you should also check out the recently released JPEG XL format, designed with the same purposes but intended to be superior. There are still much more image formats that are meant to have their own big strengths, so you should keep looking for each of them too, in case you're interested.
This is the author of this article, Laddy, signing off now! I hope you all have a really lovely day, peace. 💙

What's one new thing you learned this year?
What achievement are you proudest of this year?
🎊11 What's one new thing you learned this year?
That many people can live off of solely potatoes and be perfectly healthy and satisfied. I learned about the Potato Diet through Nicky Case's involvement, but only remembered to check her writeup after I found myself relying on potatoes for cheap meals and not feeling particularly bothered, despite being a fairly capricious eater. I still haven't finished reading the writeup, but it kind of boggles me the extent to which this happens, the lack of understanding as to why, and the fact that almost nobody seems to know about it.
🎊12 What achievement are you proudest of this year?
The combination of getting out the physical copy of Exhaustively and hitting $100/month on Patreon. I think a lot of people do not realize how laborious it is to do all that busywork with self-publishing-- you really have to sit down and hammer out all the details if you want it to look good, and there are a million little things you need to check (double spaces anywhere? how are words hyphenated? are there awkward single lines on a given page? I had to change character spacing on several lines to make the pages look more natural... and if you noticed, I failed!) and then you have to print a proof and look over that whole damn thing, and at a certain point you are just ready to die and have somebody else take the work over for you as your estate. I continue to say that I shouldn't be admired for pressing buttons and that anyone can self-publish (and should! feel free to ask anytime about the basics; I really don't know anything more!) but it does take a lot of time and effort when you care as much as I do.
And one of the people who bought a physical also wound up subscribing to Patreon which bumped me up to that $100/month mark! It's extremely hard just to break that first three-digit barrier, I think, so I'm very grateful for everyone subscribed and very proud of myself for sticking with it.
🎇 YEAR-END ASKS 🎇
#Unfortunately have to note that I'm referring to 'diet' as in 'thing you eat' and not 'thing you eat specifically to lose weight.'#I'm honestly only here for good cheap food.#Thanks so much for sending asks! I'm getting to them a bit at a time as I simultaneously work on Patreon + my entire life.#txt#ask games#asks

6 Steps To Making a Great Hoarding Ad
Consumers are never again taking a look at hoardings in the similar manner they did twenty or thirty years prior. While they may in any case be viewed as a top notch promoting space, consumers are engaged in their mobile, tablets etc. Eyes are down, not up, for quite a bit of our lives.
In any case, that doesn't mean hoardings ad is to be ignored or disregarded.
With outdoor advertising increasing the stakes and ending up progressively more competitive, in addition to digital advertising turning into the medium of choice, it's essential to know how to make the most of your advertising count.
Here are those 5 strategies to guarantee your hoardings has the most elevated possibility of being seen, and all the more critically, recalled.
The More Hoardings, The Better.
One hoarding isn't cheap. But on the other hand it's not extremely viable either. Hoardings are a mass market medium, yet they require support. Each hoardings has a rating, called Gross Ratings Points (GRP). It depends on visibility, traffic, location, size and so on.
This rating gives you a showing score in the vicinity of 1 and 100. On the off chance that it's 50, it implies that no less than half of the populace in the region would see one of your sheets in any event once every day. On the off chance that you have just a single hoarding, your effect chances are clearly not exactly in the event that you have four or five. You truly need a 100 appearing, yet that is not going to be shabby. You can hope to pay a huge number of dollars for a 50 appearing for one month. In a noteworthy territory like New York, the value shoots up.
Six Words or Less is Ideal.
Considering we're moving when we read hoardings, we don't have a ton of time to take them in. Six seconds has been touted as the business normal for perusing a hoarding. Around six words is all you should use to get the message over. You can push this to a couple of more words relying upon their length and simplicity of perusing, however as a dependable guideline, toning it down would be best here. Concision is intense, however features that are little sections won't get read. Furthermore, that implies, on the off chance that you have a perplexing brand, item or administration, you should avoid hoardings totally.
Get Noticed, But Don’t Be a Huge Distraction.
More often than not, hoardings are gone for drivers, bikers, cyclists or people on foot (which is the reason you have only a couple of moments to get a message over). This causes an interesting dilemma for the advertiser; you need to get noticed, yet you would prefer not to be in charge of major, or even minor, mishaps.
The iconic “Hello Boys” Wonderbra ads were guilty of this. Drivers were so fascinated by Eva Herzigova’s cleavage that they were crashing into poles, medians and even each other. So, while being distracting is paramount in many mediums, it’s a fine balance with the hoardings were liable of this. Drivers were so interested by Eva Herzigova's cleavage that they were colliding with posts, medians and even each other. Along these lines, while being diverting is foremost in numerous mediums, it's a fine adjust with the hoardings.
Avoid Repetition of Any Kind
You have some excellent space to work with here. It costs a considerable measure of cash to put a hoardings up, and keep it up, so utilize every last trace of the space wisely. On the off chance that you are utilizing a feature that clarifies your visual, you're squandering words. In the event that your symbolism is dull, or doesn't identify with the item, you are misusing your chance. As such a significant number of incredible copywriters and art directors will let you know, concision is everything.
Keep It Simple, Stupid
A hoarding is a quick read. More often than not, you consider it to be you drive past it at 55mph in your car, so it needs to get the message crosswise over in the best way. This isn't the place for art directors to explore different avenues regarding complex formats, or for copywriters to wax poetic. The hoarding is a punch in the face, and the easier it is, the more powerful that punch.

Disney’s brand new direct-to-consumer platform acquired 30MM subscribers.
Disney has many of the franchises that best lend themselves to this model. Many of those they don’t own, such as Harry Potter, have their rights fragmented.
Disney’s Parks & Attractions segment generates nearly 100% more revenue and 60% more profit than Disney’s studio division (which already generates nearly three times the revenue AND three times the gross margins as its primary competitors). By turning hit films into theme park attractions, not only does Disney generate more “upside” from a hit than its competitors do, Disney’s breakeven point for these films is also much lower.
There is nothing that can compare to the impact of a child being hugged by her heroes. The ability to enjoy your favorite IP as “you” is unique and lasts a lifetime. Consider, for example, how many families have Disneyland photos of their kids with Mickey or Woody on the fridge.
because of real estate scarcity, lengthy build times, enormous capital requirements (exacerbated by Baumol’s Cost Disease), Disney’s theme parks, resorts, and cruises are incredibly difficult to replicate by another Western media company
It is incredibly profitable and will continue to grow as new mobile technology/personalization enhance the park-going experience. The barriers to replication are incredibly high and span both fixed investment (land and infrastructure) and skillset (e.g. design and boots-on-the-ground operations).
“Disneyland is an experience involving many moving parts in harmony, like an orchestra. Everything has to be tuned, what you hear, what you smell, what you see, how you see it, the speed at which you assimilate all of that, just like a film, is choreographed. But how do you choreograph that if you don't control the camera, because the camera is you — it's you when you come to Disneyland".
Games have been on the cusp of these experiences for years, but in 2020, they’re well under way. These are “games” like Minecraft, Fortnite, Roblox, to a lesser extent GTA Online, and Pokémon Go.
These titles offer many unique advantages compared to their analogue analogues. For example, they are always “open”, “everywhere”, “full of your friends”, and impervious to COVID-19. These games also boast an even larger (i.e. infinite) number of attractions and rides, none of which need be bound by the laws of physics or the need for physical safety, and all of which can be rapidly updated and personalized.
The durability and scalability of these experiences are connected to why they’re so hard to define. To consider them a “game” is to consider iOS a phone, or Disneyland a specific Pirates of the Caribbean roller coaster.
these parks were designed to (or have since been converted to) allow for anyone to be an “Imagineer”. The developers of these titles aren’t trying to make a “game” but a “game engine” that allows everyone to create and share their own attraction.
nearly every game that could be recreated in Minecraft has been (e.g. Metroid). Corporations have built in-game cellphones capable of making live video calls to the real world using real world physics, users have built enormous explorable worlds based on existing IP (e.g. Game of Thrones' King's Landing, which is the size of Los Angeles) and new ones (one player spent 16 hours a day for a year building a 370 million block cyberpunk city).
nearly every game that could be recreated in Minecraft has been (e.g.
In this sense, these “digital theme parks” are really “digital theme park platforms”. Last year, Roblox paid out $100MM to developers (i.e. 1-20 person teams) against more than $500MM in UGC-based revenue. And in September, the company launched a “Marketplace” that allows developers to monetize not just their games, but also any assets, plug-ins, vehicles, 3D models, terrains, and items they made for it. This means developers can both reduce the time/effort required to create on Roblox, and receive additional revenue from the time/effort they invest.
the billions of hours American children spent imagining and acting out the adventures of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi with the 1970s and 1980s with figurines, robes, and lightsabers. However, this expansive imagination was forever trapped in brainwaves, backyards, and basements. It was hard enough to share these imaginary stories and world with close, in-person friends, let alone to faraway and unknown ones.
Today, it’s possible for the average fan to actually translate their imagination into a real, virtual space and then share it and play in it with their friends and world at large. And not only is it cool to do so, there are many companies designed around facilitating, promoting, and financially rewarding this behavior
most people don’t need or want to “make” a website or app. Billions, however, do dream of fictional worlds and wish they could share them with their friends. Just as tens of millions spent decades wishing they could build their own Super Mario levels — and now millions do via Super Mario Maker, which is one of the ten best-selling “games” on the Nintendo Switch.
Nearly every one of the underlying drivers behind these digital theme park platforms is growing: (1) their user bases; (2) the per user engagement; (3) the number and diversity of the experiences created by the community; (4) the ease with which a “player” can discover and jump from one experience to another; (5) the ease of creating an experience; (6) the technical and experiential capabilities of these engines/tools/experiences; (7) the ease and extent to which you can monetization individual creations (from individual assets to games); and (8) the importance of virtual worlds to the overall future of the Internet.
these digital theme park platforms own the overall customer relationship, billing, and all engagement data. But the core game engines are the most defensible; like the land and physical infrastructure of a park, they are built up over decades and impossible to fully short-cut. This includes not just enormous codebases, but years of enhancements to the end-to-end platform (e.g. core tech, tutorials, UI/X, community services) based on billions of hours of developer and consumer-side usage.
It’s likely that soon we’ll see D2C consumer product companies begin building their own bespoke experiences inside digital theme park platforms; the age of growth-hacking via referral codes, native podcast ads, SEO, and social is over.
The good news is more digital theme park platforms are likely to emerge.
although a new digital theme park platform is inevitable, the odds are low, the total opportunities are few, and the timelines long. In addition, it’s unclear how many platforms for UGC world creation are needed — just as most creators and consumers rely only YouTube or Twitch. Runners-up exist but are much, much smaller.
Disney could have ended up with one of these platforms with its multi-franchise “open world” sandbox-style video game, “Disney Infinity”. The game first released in 2013, received widespread acclaim, and generated a reported $200-300MM in revenue over the first three years. Despite this topline, the game’s performance nevertheless fell short of Disney’s $1B internal target and, with that in mind, presumably well short of breakeven, too. It was cancelled in 2016.
At Disneyland, attractions don’t open until they’re both complete, “perfect”, and predictable. There’s no real test, learn, change, repeat approach — especially compared to live, public experiments such as the Fortnite blackout. Hugs must be perfectly executed.
Every IP owner will need to figure out how to participate in digital theme parks and platforms — to figure out how to execute a digital version of the physical “hug”. This is especially true for those that don’t even have physical theme parks and for which the alternative — building one — would take more than a decade and $20B+ in capital.
“Detail level one is when you are standing out in the countryside and see the church steeple sticking up above the trees. Detail level two is when you enter town and are looking down the street. You can see the street, the median, the parkway strips, sidewalks, and trees. Detail level three is when you are standing on the sidewalk looking at one of the houses. You can see the character of the house, walls, roof, windows, trim, and doors. Detail level four is when you have actually walked up to the front door, grabbed the door knocker, see its detail, finish, and feel its temperature and weight as you knock on the door… most architects are pretty good at getting to level three, but here at Disney we must always get to the detail level four so we can maintain our immersive environments that our stories create”.
It is easy to say, “we can’t do it”, “we’ve tried and failed”, or “what even is the roadmap here”. These are fair and important rejoinders. However, as the “Imagineering Story” frequently reiterates, nobody at Disney had built a theme park, or had any relevant experience (other than narrative) before Walt insisted they do it. And it was messy, and uncertain, and chaotic, with the business folks (which I say with love as I am one) who were terrified of the cost, skeptical of the demand and long-term interest, and rattled by the lack of a clear business case. Note, too, that today’s leading platforms will, themselves admit they hardly know what they’re doing — and how can they? But of course, it helps when you can grow by letting your most imaginative and obsessive fans chip in.

HE WANTS TO MEET 雨水, SVEA, RASHIN, MAEVE.
CHIARA: Hiram knows what he has to do, always. He knows what he wants but Chiara could not always understand. Just like this time right now, he did make Chiara come all the way from her filming in New York back to Jakarta, saying that there is something Hiram needs to inform. She has no reason to say ‘no’ to him—no, she has no power to say ‘no’. Hiram has it all over Chiara. And so there she is, walking towards the building that she is supposed to call home. Despite of being so hesitant to come, she doesn’t want to add any more trouble.
“Is Dad home, Rue?” She asks to one of the maids of the huge mansion.
“He says that he will be home in ten minutes, Miss.” Chiara emits a soft smile as she nods lightly and soon, she makes her way to the living room.
ISAIAH:
Ever since he was born, the status as heir of the throne never encumbered him. It does make him more mindful of future life. Nevertheless, no matter how good he is in outlining his future life. Rather than relying on his master plan, the man followed whatever his father asked him to do, just like this occasion.
Isaiah sat on the couch in the living room, spare hours with readings, folding himself into belligerent silences on the book. However, he catches some conversation among maids about the arrival of his sister, Chiara, from New York.
"You come?" The man said to Chiara. Without letting his reading moment unbothered and stoic, his slender digits prying open one of the paper on the book.
DRE:
"fuck. let me go!" dre trying to get those flirty hands of hiram's bodyguards off him. he can't believe they're really coming to his place when dre said no about coming that day.
he taps his clothes and fix it as they let go of him. he saw the conduct coming with separate car.
"i can walk by myself. give me fucking personal space." he barks again when they finally let him go but walking so close behind him.
"i will fucking kill all of you." they finally back off when they arrived in the living room, making sure dre wont be running away anymore. dre gaze caught both his big sister and big brother already there. he frowned when he see the sight of them.
he hates this family gathering already. he want to leave.
YVAINE:
Yvaine giving her best look as she’s came out through the car. Issa told her this morning that Hiram wants his children gather up at the house. She refused at first, but knowing her siblings will come, she couldn’t even resist.
The fact, she missed them too much.
Being the (unplanned) youngest born, people might think her family spoiled her like much, but not for Yvaine. Since she was born, everything is settled, she doesn’t have good relationship with her parents. They never really there for Yvaine. At least, her siblings is there for her. It’s all that matter. Now, her brothers and sister already sitting peacefully at living room.
”What a beautiful day.. Hi, Cici. Hi, Koko.” She greet them with her gummy smiles shown.
CHIARA:
Will this be another awkward meeting again? She doesn’t know. She has completely zero idea about what’s going to happen. “Yes, here I am, dearest brother.” Said her as soon as she heard the familiar sound from her older brother, Isaiah. “Miss me much?”
Dre looks like he needs to spend extra energy to be there, Yvaine and Isaiah on the other hand, they look rather calm as always. Isaiah as Dad’a favorite and Yvaine as the most delicate and loving little sister. Unlike Chiara, the scandalous, rebel daughter of Hiram.
“You guys are here, too? Interesting. Was it Dad or Mom that you would be meeting today?” Chiara emits a little—rather suspicious—smile on her visage. “Or,” she pauses for a brief moment as she sits on the couch, not so far from where Isaiah is sitting on.
“Is it the four of us that Dad wants to meet? That sounds even more interesting.” She smiles for once more as her eyes are glancing at the three of her siblings one by one. She has this feeling that there will be something.
ISAIAH:
"And your scandal? Not my cup of tea." No matter how Chiara tried to be nice to him, but his eyes never left the book because, for Isaiah, the whole scandal she created had to make his work a little bit striving, which he didn't like. However, his little brother's unique entrance made was successful in caught his eyes. A slight impose grin showed. He believes that if Dre cooperated with the family, everything would be much more lenient for him than appear as pathetic as he is now.
The book he had been reading had closed to witness the rare view in front of him, his complete family without any missing. Isaiah was reluctant to comment on Chiara's question and let them figure out why Hiram gathered them all here.
DRE:
dre trying to ignore how his siblings reaction when they saw him. his fist tighten trying to not explode yet from annoyance. dre choose to sit far away from the others. his frowns soften when he saw yvaine arrived and join them.
dre smiles when she greet them but his face frowning again when he heard chiara start speaking.
"like i care. i don't." dre mumbles in annoyance, he look around the house trying to find the figure they're waiting for but no one is showing.
"i just know he want to announce something and i should show up here. i never thought he will actually gather all of us." dre continues, he can't believe that they have little chit-chat.
YVAINE:
The high tension filling up the house, Yvaine knows something like this will happened if the four of them sit on the same room together. She sit next to her older brother Isaiah, still giving a space between them.
“Chill out, everyone. Perhaps, our parents just missed us——been a while since we’re sitting here together.” Said Yvaine, to cooling down the tension. Perhaps, she’s the only daughter of Hiram who mostly think in a positive way.
The fact she knows, it won’t happen. That must be something important to announce, or one of them did something caught his attention. While she sip a tea who served from the butlers, their parents walking through the living room.
“Here, they are..” Said Yvaine.
CHIARA:
She scoffs upon hearing what her little brother has to say. “Come on,” she pauses as she grabs the glass in front of her and takes a sip of it quickly. “It’s not like this is our first meeting, anyway.” Chiara has a way of trying to converse with her siblings. Although most of times, especially when each one of them are living alone by themselves, sentences could sound rather sarcastic when it slips past Chiara’s lips.
“Yes, love. Perhaps they just miss us.” She smiles right after Yvaine speaks her words. Hiram and Amaia make their entrance, the maids are bowing down as they walk. Amaia sits on the couch just where she would usually sit whilst glancing as it takes turn from Chiara to Isaiah, Dre, and finally Yvaine. Hiram looks thrilled, it is clearly shown.
“You guys are here.” Hiram begins to say something. “Did you enjoy your trip to New York, Chiara?” She doesn’t expect that, actually, to be the first that he aims in opening the meeting.
“I did,” “I will head back there as soon as we finish this meeting.”
“Don’t rush it. We have just met again after two weeks straight.” Hiram smiles, doesn’t look genuine in her eyes.
“Before anything, is there any good news that might cheer me up even more today? Look at us, we are finally together.”
ISAIAH:
The question given is the one thing he was waiting for in this meeting. To brag about his achievement, to show that he is not left behind. Isaiah began to adjust his seat, then took the cellphone on the table.
"This morning, I got the company last year reports. With a 52 percent increase in sales to $345 million, our net income nearly doubled than 2019. Propelling us to the top 100 listed companies in the Asia-Pacific region with annual revenue of less than $ 1 billion, according to Frobes Asia." His sudden speech is subsequently interpreted as arrogant, but in context, it more likes to prove to his father that he is fulfilled his desire to strive better than before. Then his eyes staring at his family, who stares at him. No matter what's going within their thoughts. He is satisfied with his achievement report. "Surprise." Again Isaiah leaned back on the sofa with a triumphant smile on his face.
"And you know, that wasn't enough, right?" Isaiah knew that his father's disgruntled expression would come, but Hiram hates excuses, so he prepared something else. "I know. That's why I called the Frobes Asia's association to see how the competitors are doing their job and make sure the company reach the top before even you realize it, Father." A satisfied smile crossed Hiram's face, feeling proud of the results he had built for Isaiah over the years.
DRE:
dre rolls his eyes as hiram show up along with amaia. dre doesn't even fix the way he sit and just watch both of them greet all of them. of course hiram ask chiara and isaiah be talk brag things about what he did with the company that honestly dre have no interest listening but he secretly list them in his brain. somehow it's fueling anger inside him.
"and how about you, aldrean casimir lee? are you happy with the special pick up i gave you?" hiram moves his gaze to the younger son.
dre grinds his teeth and he trying to calm himself but he end up giving too much reactions again. dre stood up and shooting anger, "stop doing it! you can't force me. i can report you!"
"aldrean lee, don't raise your voice infront of your father." amaia warn him and dre stop himself. he throw his gaze somewhere else and return to sit down.
"i see you still lack of manner. i heard you were praised for your manner in the university. why don't you show me about it?" hiram ask his son again but dre still being dre.
"i don't have anything to please you." dre still being stubborn. good thing hiram decided to move on.
YVAINE:
Yvaine knows exactly where this conversation goes, when they’re together Hiram must be questioning the achievements from his kids. Isaiah always bring his successful achievements, like always and definitely made Hiram proud. Different from Dre, he doesn’t even care whatever their parent sain, since she knows Hiram must send his bodyguard to drag him to the house. Poor Dre, she loves her sister and brothers so deeply but she doesn’t like the way their parents treat them differently.
Hiram shakes his head after hearing the answer from Dre, and before his eyes staring at her brown eyes.
”He still lack of manners, I see.” “How about you, our dearest Yvaine? There must be something good we’d like to hear.“ He continued. She smiles widely. She could see clearly the way Hiram trying to act ’more’ care to Yvaine, while he doesn’t. Amaia must asked him to do. “I’m on top of JFW list this year. I will meet Miss Anne tomorrow for fitting. My schedule quite busy this month..“
“Then, I have photoshoot with Dior the day after tomorrow for April issues. I’ll send the magazine to both of you sooner. I hope it’s satisfied you enough.“ She added, before a little smiles paint on Hiram face. She knows, even a smile achievement never be enough.
CHIARA:
Alright. Now everyone is bragging about the achievements and Chiara could not get more nauseous. Sure, that one make Hiram smile a lot, of course. Amaia carelessly sipping on her drink whilst listening to her children’s update of—she is not really sure of.
“We are all grownups, is it a necessity to talk about this now?” Chiara snaps and she knows that would mean receiving a glare from the rest of the family members yet she doesn’t really care about it.
“If yes,” she stops midway as she fixes her position. “I’m doing my new project. It’s like a series for the flix site and it is like big, big. I wonder why didn’t brother mention about it, but,” she stops as she takes her time to sip her drink.
“I’m going to have a meeting for the Art State.” She smiles.
“Please anticipate upcoming auction, or simply anything that my not so small business will be holding.” Hiram claps, literally and genuinely feeling slightly proud of his children. Or at least that is what Chiara could think of.
“Isn’t that sweet, everyone?”
“That is of having my blood running through your vein. Owning the name of The Lee should be that way.” “Now, kids,” Hiram grabs a glass of his favorite wine and continues.
“We are going to hold a dinner and perhaps a charity event. With your grandpa, of course,”
“I want you guys to tell him exactly like what you have just told me.”
“And in the mean time, do something so you could brag more.”
(Here we go again.)
Chiara knows how things are about to go down.
ISAIAH:
Hiram's greed is, of course, nothing new to Isaiah. All his life, he witnessed the burning desire and passion, even from the moment he was born. His eyes were tracing everyone in the room, maybe, just maybe, if the greed didn't subsist, everything could be much warmer at the moment. But, it's better not to regret the past.
His attention shifted towards Hiram, then revealed a faint smile that exhausts himself every time he does so. However, he always did it no matter what. "Sure, don't worry, Father. You have great kids." He threw a mock-glare at his brother for a second. Amaia notices that Isaiah threw a suspicious gaze at Dre, which might provoke his brother to detonate again. "Isaiah Lee." She warns. A fit of chuckles escaped through his lips, applying sarcastic remarks, teasing his brother. "Whatever, we will make you proud, Father. No matter what."
DRE:
dre grinds his teeth. he clenched his fist trying to ignore the pressure his family brought into him. dre doesn't like this. he didn't want to be any part of this but he can't do anything about it. he glare at his brother and hiram with hate. he want to just throw a punch and start a fight but that's only gonna make things worst. he should show them that dre isn't a problematic kid anymore.
he isn't he kid who have anger management issues.
"i'm busy with my jobs. my students will have their final soon and there's a lot of competition where i need to assist them." dre says trying to get away from whatever plan hiram is having.
"put those plan aside, aldrean lee. this gathering is more important than that." hiram said to him.
"no. never." dre response and he could feel hiram is staring at him. dre know that he will do something about it but he won't let him.
YVAINE:
The tension is high again. She really knows Dre will refused to have a family dinner either charity event. But she also knew, her father didn’t accept a ’no’. She’s staring at her father who’s about to be mad again.
”You, and your selfish ass, did not change at all— how could you say no to your father?” Hiram rising her tone, and she hates it.
”Father, I’ll make sure Dre will come with me. I can guarantee you.” ”Come with me, okay Ko?” She moved her seat beside her brother.
Either this is a bad idea or no, Yvaine just couldn’t stand with the hatred that Hiram will throw any hatred to Dre. She just want a peaceful day with her family, her works already stressed her out, so this day can’t get any worse. She holds Dre’s arms as she smiles over him. Dre must know about what she’s doing, her eyes tell everything.
CHIARA:
The only one who’s sane enough is clearly Yvaine. Isaiah, no matter how old that one man gets, he sometimes just can’t stop trying to pick up a fight with Dre. And Dre, knowing the temper of his father, he keeps on trying to provoke him with his rude behavior. Well, that is how Chiara sees it. Right now, all she wants to do is to leave the house and go back to New York. She doesn’t care about anything else because Hiram is already stating what he wants. This meeting is supposed to be done by now, isn’t it?
“Can’t we all agree that we are old and mature enough to know what we need to do?” Chiara finally says something after a few minutes of trying to listen to every conversation.
“And as much as Dre doesn’t like it, I believe he knows what to do.” “Right, brother?”
She knows Dre hates it when Chiara speaks that way, being the all-knowing and such. But she did that for the sake of not getting any more headache. Not just for her but the rest of the siblings.
“Then show me.” “I’m holding on to your words, Chiara Lee.”
Hiram sounds very much intimidating and Chiara agrees to that fact. Yet she doesn’t want to show it, so she plays it cool.
“Sure.” “We are The Lee, after all.” “We need to act like one.”
ISAIAH:
It is a pretty notion, in truth; however, the one who said it all, Chiara. "See yourself, young lady. Mature enough?" The corners of his lips curling up, disbelief. "Well, you better to hold into her words firmly, Father." Isaiah's smug face was quite demure at the moment he said that.
His eyes glanced at Hiram, who was leaning back to the sofa and evidently expecting him to explain more about things to brag in the future meeting with Graham.
"Jakarta Times. After five years, they boycott our artists. We finally came to a final agreement." Hiram adjusts his position upon hearing the explanation of Isaiah.
Jakarta Times has been The Lee Entertainment's sworn enemy. They exposed a few scandals when it's out of hand. The company understands the dirty way of work culture happens in Lee Entertainment. However, the power they hold is barely more substantial than Lee Entertainment itself. But, many idealistic workers thought that even though small numbers, they could shut down Lee Companies. In fact, this persistence of them has triggered the company several times. But now Isaiah came to give to the end of the predicament.
"My three-year strategy is a success. After we acquired their subsidiary company, in three years, they have struggled with debt. After I was personally asked to abandon the paper and started to focus on the digital media, it gave them a punch that destabilized Jakarta Times. And they are announced to end its production by the end of March and has filed for bankruptcy."
Everything that Isaiah tells may go far to explain the smile, whichever lurks about the corners of Hiram's lips. He could no longer keep his lips from arching upward in triumph.
"That's a good one. You have to present both to your Grandpa in Kingstate. Keep it good work."
"However, I would keep an eye on this case until I see them close the company right in front of my eyes. If the public found out, they might start to open funding or whatsoever to keep the company on the track."
"And would you be able to shut them down before Kingstate?"
"Sure, Father."
DRE:
a tint of reddish blush creeps on dre's cheeks. he look away as yvaine moves closer to him and calm him down. it's embarrassing how this family could affect him in a very weird way. now the girls trying to persuade him, not only his mom, yvaine, even chiara.
dre choose to just shut himself not talking further because he only might sounds stupid if he start speak again. he still didn't want to go, he don't want to please the old man or this family. after all this time why does he still invited to this family gathering although he never wish to be invited. when isaiah start talking again, dre only want to block his ears. he isn't interested in whatever his older brother doing but lowkey, he do take notes about it in his mind.
can this guy fail once? it's getting annoying that he keep on doing things so well. in the end, dre choose to watch things outside the house. oh, did mom plain a sunflower? he never saw that.
YVAINNE:
Clock is ticking yet Isaiah still explaining this and that to their parents. While her and the other siblings, wanting this meeting to be done sooner. Yvaine already knew that for years, Jakarta Times is the only media who kept spreading false rumor about her. The point is, they hate her and according to her informant, they are willing to do everything to make her look bad. But, she's Lee after all. Jakarta Times messing around with wrong family.
"I hope all of you able to make our family proud. Like Isaiah. He must be inspired you, that's what I want." Said Graham, with his eagle eyes on each of us. To be frank, she hates when her father demanding her something like this. Yvaine and Isaiah are different.
CHIARA:
What’s new? Hiram trying to pull everything from his children only for the sake of himself, that’s an old news. Chiara couldn’t stop letting out a sigh just every single time Hiram or Isaiah speaks about whatever they call as an achievement, something to brag about. Amaia is still having the same expression, she knows that her mother is just being herself, not trying to make things worse and knows that she just couldn’t stop her husband. No one can, anyway. He is quite unstoppable.
“That should be all, right?”
“We will only have to do what we’ve been doing, right?”
Hiram nods as he makes that expression where Chiara doesn’t want to explain. The same old expression which she believes to be both a way to praise but also to mock her.
“Exactly, that is why you are here for.”
“Alright. Then can we go back now? I have to catch a flight back to New York.”
She doesn’t care about what her father might say but she is already standing there, so ready to leave the house.
“See you then, everyone.”
HE WANTS TO MEET: END PART.

I don't really understand why contributors would only get a pdf? Contributors are the ones making the content for the zine. The zine wouldn't exist without them creating the art, writing, and merch. Maybe it's just me but I feel like they deserve a physical copy, as well as the merch they helped create, or at least a discount. Giving to charity is great and I'm glad you want to maximize how much you can give, but your method comes across as not caring about or appreciating contributors work.
While we would absolutely love to give free/reduced cost physical copies of the zine to our contributors, it’s not possible. The financials don’t work out that way.
The mods here are all creatives with different areas of experience with fanzines (as participants, contributors, etc) and even within professional markets. Deciding to do a physical zine was something we put a lot of thought into in order to make possible and it is still something that is wholly dependent on preorders. If we wish to donate to charity, which is the goal of the zine along with sharing fantastic art of all forms, then free physicals aren’t something we can accomplish. Even allowing contributors to purchase copies at production cost during the regular (consumer) preorder period is not possible as we rely on the money from preorders to order the physical copies and merchandise along with ensuring we have enough overhead to replace/reorder missing zines or merchandise and cover the cost of packaging materials.
The “consumer” pricing is made to be affordable as it can possibly be when we factor in all the costs of printing, shipping, and packaging the zines. We aren’t planning to charge a premium, or to make our products unattainable to the contributors. Production costs don’t cover shipping (to us or you), shipping materials (like the envelopes, padding, and labels), or allow us any overhead that we’d be able to donate to Conservation International.
We, as the moderating team, are not in a position that would allow us to foot a bill for the cost of 35 extra zines for contributors, not including the cost of merchandise or any other features of the bundles we intend to sell. If you’re concerned about the fairness of our decisions, we invite you to think about the situation from our positions as moderators. We have limited funds, time, and space with which to operate within. We are required to order a portion of extra zines (and merchandise) in the event that some arrive damaged or are lost when in transit to the consumer. We also need to purchase envelopes, padding, tape, and labels for each order. In order to ensure we can provide quality products (and that they’ll arrive safely and in the best condition possible), we cannot put anything up at “production cost” alone without ending up in the negatives.
If we run out of overstock/preorders close and there is still interest in further copies, we’d be more than happy to have a second printing run. However, that still does not mean we will be able to guarantee reduced-price copies to contributors at all, regardless of the run. The fairness of how we choose to distribute any possible extras is something we decided on based upon the needs of our customers combined with our want to provide for our contributors. If you’re upset due to the fact that there is no guarantee you’ll be able to get a physical copy for cheap, we ask you to reconsider your application to this zine and also to think about exactly how much you think zines are worth to be able to be given out so freely.
We wholly respect our applicants and their hard work and dedication to the fandom. It’s not our intention to slight them or make them feel like they are not being valued as members of the zine team. As such, we hope they understand that a digital bundle is all we can offer as compensation without crashing this project, or devaluing their work.
We 100% respect a person’s decision to not participate in the zine if this seems unfair or doesn’t work for them. You’re the creator and the only one who can determine the value of your work!
We hope you understand and if you need more clarification, please feel free to ask more questions! Best of luck with your creative endeavours.
