But why? You're literally putting yourself at risk by doing this. I love you (platonically), but this is just too much, even for me. This isn't some 'hee-hee haw haw' moment for everyone to laugh at.

The people harassing you are part of the reason why your mental health is declining further and you're making it worse for yourself by purposely attracting the worst kind of attention. You don't need that and none of your moots want this for you.

You don't need to put yourself out there in such a way that you'll receive endless amounts of harassment to prove that you're brave, Angel. :(

I don't want to sound rude or snappy, but this is already getting old. Mental health should always come first, but putting yourself in these kinds of situations won't get you on the side that's full of light. You're already in a dark place, don't enable it or else things won't get better for you.

I'm sorry, but I have to give it to you in a way that wouldn't seem like I'm encouraging you to hurt yourself in such a way. If you hadn't noticed, this reckless behavior you're showing is hurting you. And it's not just your mental health or your emotional response, I'm talking physical, too. I'm not putting the full blame on you, I just want you to understand that your own actions can affect you.

I'm saying all of this because I actually care. If I didn't, I wouldn't be giving you this advice right now and would just enable you to act more reckless and that would make me the shittiest online friend.

As someone who got dragged into a butterfly farm to "get rid of this silly anxiety around bugs", I can confirm: don't go in there if you're afraid of butterflies.

You're not gonna see the inherent beauty of nature and be miraculously healed. You're gonna see the thing you're scared of, blown up to horror movie proportions in size and/or number, prancing around on wet, rotting fruit before flying directly at your face. You're gonna turn around and try to find an exit, only to find them all blocked by rare, delicate, terrifying creatures you know you can't financially afford to harm. You will try to hyperventilate, or scream, or both, except you'll be scared to open your mouth while surrounded by mouthhole-sized, flying monsters that travel in strange, jerky paths, and it is deeply unpleasant to have your self preservation instinct try to comply with all three of those urges simultaneously. Having the air be hot and damp and absolutely reeking of the aforementioned fruit does not help that situation at all, by the way. People around you will not understand what's happening to you, and if they do, they'll generally be unsure about how safe it is to approach you, which does absolutely awful things to the hind brain of a terrified social animal like yourself. If you do get out on your own, the adrenaline will wear off and you will be utterly exhausted within minutes, barely able to sit, definitely unable to stand, shaking like a leaf for ages, usually in a gift shop where you're surrounded by cheerful facsimiles of your newly acquired recurring nightmares. And you'll be out 20-50 bucks for doing this to yourself.

Exposure therapy is something you do with a trained therapist you trust nearby. Usually it's a gradual process, only going as far as you need to reasonably function in everyday life. The only thing you'll get from DIY-ing that shit is some new and interesting habits, like not leaving the house or opening any windows during summer.

i hate to say it because i'm neurodivergent and a chronic-pain-haver but like... sometimes stuff is going to be hard and that's okay.

it's okay if you don't understand something the first few times it's explained to you. it's okay if you have to google every word in a sentence. it's okay if you need to spend a few hours learning the context behind a complicated situation. it's okay if you need to read something, think about it, and then come back to re-read it.

i get it. giving up is easier, and we are all broken down and also broke as hell. nobody has the time, nobody has the fucking energy. that is how they win, though. that is why you feel this way. it is so much easier, and that is why you must resist the impetus to shut down. fight through the desire you've been taught to "tl;dr".

embrace when a book is confusing for you. accept not all media will be transparent and glittery and in the genre you love. question why you need everything to be lily-white and soft. i get it. i also sometimes choose the escapism, the fantasy-romance. there's no shame in that. but every day i still try to make myself think about something, to actually process and challenge myself. it is hard, often, because of my neurodivergence. but i fight that urge, because i think it's fucking important.

especially right now. the more they convince you not to think, the easier it will be to feed you misinformation. the more we accept a message without criticism, the more power they will have over that message. the more you choose convenience, the more they will make propaganda convenient to you.

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.
