Tour de France Femmes begins Monday!
After the long pause from the 2024 Paris Olympics (which has been pretty great, tbh) we finally begin the Tour de France Femmes on Monday, August 12!
We're looking at eight stages, with the riders rolling out from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, where they will spend most of three days on 2.5 stages around Rotterdam. We say 2.5 stages, because Tuesday features two different stages, a short sprint stage and then an evening time trial. We don't know how we feel about these types of stages, but at least it will showcase different riders' talents.
Stage 4 on Wednesday will see the riders cross into Belgium and travel parts of the routes for Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege, including the famous hills like the Cauberg and the Cote de la Roche-aux-Faucons. And then finally, on Thursday, the Tour de France actually reaches France, and we will see increasingly mountainous stages that should determine the general classification, including finales on Le Grand-Bornand and the infamous Alp d'Huez.
Tumblr media
As for GC, the odds-on favorite has to be defending TdFF champ Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime), who as we have said this year, is the best climber and stage-racer in the world right now. Cycling News has a great run-down for the other challengers, however, which we recommend.
Tumblr media
It will be interesting to see how other strong teams like Canyon-SRAM and Lidl-Trek can put SD Worx under pressure. We've seen that in the Tour de Suisse and it can be done, but frankly, Vollering is so dominant right now that she might still win even if she's isolated on half the stages. She is just that good. Keep an eye on riders like Neve Bradbury (Canyon-SRAM) or Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez) as possible spoilers, and definitely contenders for the podium.
We honestly don't know how the fight for the points jersey will go, and we're excited to see how that plays out across the stages. Defending green jersey wearer Marianne Vos (Visma Lease-a-Bike) will want to repeat, but she'll have some serious competition from Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), who is still the fastest pure sprinter in the world and has shown she can get over the hills remarkably well. We'd love to see Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) back to winning ways after being off the bike due to injury.
We are less optimistic about the competition for the polka-dot jersey, and think it will likely be swept up by the GC winner. But that isn't always the case, like in the Giro this year, and we'd love to see some breakaway action and a non-GC rider try to hold onto that jersey.
Tumblr media
We also expect several teams to hunt stages and keep several of the stages entertaining. EF-Oatly-Cannondale has been on a rampage this year, scooping up stages in the Vuelta Feminina and the Giro d'Italia Women, and they have the firepower to do it again with Alison Jackson, Kim Cadzow, Clara Emond, or Kristen Faulkner. Another team to watch is AG Insurance-Soudal, which has options in Tour Down Under champ Sarah Gigante, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, and Giro mountains classification winner Justine Ghekiere.
And finally, we expect to be surprised! We'd love to see a new talent announce herself on the biggest stage of the season, that's part of what we love about bike racing. This year's course is less likely to be an SD Worx show like last year (5 out of 8 stages), particularly with Lotte Kopecky not on the start list, so we are looking forward to some surprise moves and performances that will keep the racing interesting all the way to the top of Alp d'Huez!

Marianne Vos and Lotte Kopecky have been absolutely mind blowing in this race. They’ve just dominated it through and through. The gap with the third is insane.

Dominic, taking advantage of Rook’s bird’s-eye view to stand back from the parade-watching crowd. A nosy relative came to shoulder surf when I was most of the way done with this. His comment? “You should have made his shirt say crows, not hos” *facepalm*

Wondrous Pogacar wins Strade Bianche
Wondrous Pogacar wins Strade Bianche
Two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar has displayed his dominance after recovering from a crash and launching an unprecedented long-distance solo attack to win the Strade Bianche classic in Italy. But it was a different story in the women’s race on Saturday, with Belgian champion Lotte Kopecky holding off two-time champion Annemiek van Vleuten in a two-woman sprint. Slovenian Pogacar…

The 13th Hex by Jordan L Hawk. Short story prequel for the Hexworld Series.
Dominic Kopecky dreamed of becoming a member of New York’s Metropolitan Witch Police—a dream dashed when he failed the test for magical aptitude. Now he spends his days drawing the hexes the MWP relies on for their investigations. But when a murder by patent hex brings crow familiar Rook to his desk, Dominic can’t resist the chance to experience magic. And as the heat grows between Dominic and Rook, so does the danger. Because the case has been declared closed—and someone is willing to kill to keep it that way. This is some of the best world-building I’ve read (to just be a short story). The description of the hexes, how they’re created, and how they are used was gorgeous. Rook is all enthusiasm, but he has secrets, and hasn’t yet chosen his witch for a bond. Dominic is living a less than full life, and amazed when the handsome Rook suggests they work together on a case. The taste of casework will give Dominic what he thought he always wanted, but Rook’s fears may undermine the connection they have forged?
If you’ve read some of the posts on my regular blog, you know I love the book and series The Alienist. This is NYC during that same period of time, with the Witch side of law enforcement, and Roosevelt as the regular Police Commissioner.
This was initially in an anthology, but it was slightly updated for this individual release as the prequel to the series.

The final track cycling events of the 2024 Paris Olympics have wrapped up, and they saw some impressive performances that *almost* convinced us to watch track cycling more.
New Zealand had a very good last week, with Ellesse Andrews winning women's Keirin. Hetty van de Wouw of the Netherlands and Emma Finucane of Great Britain finished silver and bronze, respectively. (Can we also mention how absolutely 🔥 the New Zealand kit is? The stark black and fern motif looks so cool. We almost want to do a best of Olympic cycling kit, there were some other great ones out there.)
Tumblr media
Other than the funny bike situation, Keirin seems like one of the track events we understand best. It's a bike race, you race together and whoever is fastest wins. There's a pacing motorcycle on the track? It speeds up, or it just pulls off? I dunno, that's weird, but at least it's just becomes a race, and very fast one!
Sprint is a different animal, and seemingly a misnomer. They just ride around slowly, looking at each other. It's like the silliest, slowest part of a road race that ends in a two-up sprint. And they do it again? Okay, whatever, that's fine.
It was more than fine for New Zealand, because Ellesse Andrews took gold in that event as well, followed by Lea Friedrich of Germany for silver and Emma Finucane of Great Britain for bronze, added to her silver in the Keirin.
Tumblr media
And then we come to the omnium, a track cycling race that we truly do not understand. Seriously, what is this event? You race around and there are periodic sprints, and you score points on certain laps, and the points add up over multiple races? This just sounds like an event that makes you race a bike and do math in your head as you keep an eye on competitors and laps, and that makes our heads hurt.
Tumblr media
This event was dominated by American Jennifer Valente, who already had a gold to her name in women's team pursuit. She entered the final race in the lead, and kept it all the way for gold. Poland’s Daria Pikulik won silver, and New Zealand’s Ally Wollaston took home the bronze after holding off Lotte Kopecky of Belgium.
Tumblr media
(For the record, Australia's yellow and green kit with indigenous designs on the sleeves also looks very cool.)
But it gets worse! Because the madison is a very similar event that is like a tag-team relay involving tagging in and out, and half of the riders aren't engaged at any particular moment, and they sling-shot each other around, all while keeping track of points and competitors and laps. 🫠
The madison was apparently (who knows, we couldn't even tell) won by a resurgent Italian team made up of familiar names in road racing, Vittoria Guazzini and Chiara Guazzini. Great Britain's Elinor Barker and Neah Evans took home silver while Maike van der Duin and Lisa van Belle of the Netherlands leapt into third place after lapping the pack to score big took home bronze.
Tumblr media
Our heads hurt just trying to describe it all, but it was exciting racing, and a nice send-off for cycling at the 2024 Paris Olympics!

Is Trolling in Gaming Negative or just Dark Comedy?
People get ‘trolled on the daily, but what is it and where is it dominant? To troll, one must assume an identity or play the game of misplaced information and convincing others you truly believe in a fact, baiting them into an argument. Many studies have been done regarding trolling and why it occurs, one study by (Kopecky, 2016) explains the various reasons this occurs. These vary from boredom, attention seeking, revenge, personal amusement or the desire to throw a community. Little research towards online trolling regarding games has been done. The research that has occurred as per (Thacker & Griffiths, 2012) suggests that these have had opposing results that online gaming both decreases and increases self-esteem.
When the online gaming was still young, trolling existed. One of those who went by the name of Kevin, who trolled for a job they were getting payed for. The original videos have since been made private by the company Machinima (old school gaming video business). These videos consisted of ‘Kevin’ either pretending he was completely unaware of the game he was playing or trying to get infuriate others within the lobby by any means necessary. This was all done in good spirit, no emotional or harmful words were ever said and it was all done in good fun and to entertain an audience.
The sample data which Thacker & Griffiths undertook showed that 59.5% of gamer’s had previously trolled. This trolling could vary from harmless fun to irresponsibly affecting other games on a deeper, personal level with the intent of hurting them. Majority of trolling is done to cure boredom or provide entertainment to an audience such as that of Kevin’s videos. Those who intend on harming others do not share these situations, showing that they know what they have done is wrong. The generality of trolling in the social gaming world is that of humour and entertainment. If it ever elevates from that to harmful intent, you then are not trolling as trolling is the act of misplaced information or identity, not with the intent of outright harm. Which begs the question, am I or you a troll..

Multivitamins Improve Heart Function — But Only if You Don't Take Statins Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Dietary supplements are a multibillion-dollar industry that is growing at a phenomenal rate. In 2012, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), estimated Americans spend $30.2 billion each year on complementary health approaches.1 These numbers continue to rise as more become aware of the impact nutrition and micronutrients have on overall health and wellness. According to a survey by the Council for Responsible Nutrition, nearly 68 percent take dietary supplements regularly. They list their reasons as overall health benefits, filling in nutritional gaps, increased energy, better heart health and improved bone health.2 While "vitamins and minerals" was the category that had the highest usage (97 percent), specialty supplements such as omega-3 and probiotics remained stable, and herbal supplements such as green tea, garlic and cranberry rose by 5 percent in the past year. Despite their popularity, there has been some debate about whether or not these supplements are truly useful. It is possible to overdose or cause harm using vitamins and minerals indiscriminately. However, recent research has also discovered daily high-dose oral multivitamins and multimineral supplements decreased cardiac events in study participants when they were not concurrently taking statin drugs.3 High-Dose Multivitamins May Lower Your Risk of a Cardiac Event Patients were enrolled at 134 sites in the U.S. and Canada in an effort to evaluate the safety and efficacy of EDTA chelation in patients with coronary artery disease or a history of heart attack.4 Cosponsors of the study were the National Institute of Health's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). This was the first multi-center study to evaluate the use of chelation in this population. Dr. Stephen Kopecky, cardiologist at Mayo Clinic, commented:5 "Chelation is a process in which a substance is used to bind molecules, such as minerals, and remove them from the body. Its use grew by nearly 68 percent between 2002 and 2007 in the United States, to 111,000 people, despite there being no evidence of its safety, efficacy or mechanism of action." At the start of the study the investigators found EDTA chelation used by alternative practitioners was regularly accompanied by high doses of multivitamins and multiminerals. As this was a compelling factor that may confound the data, participants were split into four groups: Chelation plus multivitamins and multiminerals Chelation plus placebo supplements Placebo chelation plus active multivitamins and multiminerals Placebo chelation plus placebo supplements The primary endpoint of the study, an objective event that indicates whether the intervention is beneficial or not, was the first time any of the following occurred: All-cause mortality Hospitalization for angina Coronary revascularization (such as angioplasty) Heart attack Stroke At the start of the study, researchers noted those taking statins as a prescribed subgroup for further analysis. Of the participants enrolled, 73 percent were taking statins at the start of the study and 27 percent were not. At the conclusion, researchers found those taking statin drugs enjoyed no additional benefit from the vitamins, while those who didn't take the drug experienced a significant benefit from taking vitamins, whether or not they also received the chelation therapy. The researchers concluded:6 "High-dose oral multivitamin and multimineral supplementation seem to decrease combined cardiac events in a stable, post-MI population not taking statin therapy at baseline. These unexpected findings are being retested in the ongoing TACT2." The Importance of Using High-Quality Supplements Researchers used a unique formulation designed for the study, based on commonly used vitamin supplements prescribed by alternative medicine practitioners. In other words, the vitamins used by the participants were not over-the-counter, grocery store brand multivitamin supplements. Choosing a quality multivitamin and multimineral to use at home may not be straightforward. It is important that manufacturers have checks and balances in place during production to ensure the quality of their final product. Manufacturers may agree to a voluntary certification and testing by the ConsumerLab.com, NSF International or U.S. Pharmacopeia. These testing organizations help ensure manufacturers meet strict standards of quality through examination and testing of the product throughout the production process.7 Once tested, the manufacturer may place the seal of the organization on the product label indicating a reliable source has tested the product for safety, effectiveness, risk and quality. As with any product, vitamins have a shelf life that conforms to the vitamin stability profile in the final product. Products react differently to light, humidity and heat as well. If you choose to use a supplement, choose a well-respected company whose product is consistently evaluated and tested to ensure you are receiving exactly what is on the label. Cardiovascular Health Is Driven by Mitochondrial Function Mitochondria are tiny specialized structures within cells that generate energy. They have their own genetic code and divide and replicate on their own timetable. They produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the type of energy your cells use.8 In a study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), researchers discovered mitochondria and the ATP they produce, may be the "dominant pathway for skeletal muscle energy distribution."9 This information led others to suspect that your mitochondria form a veritable power grid within your body, vital to your health and life. They confirmed this theory in a study published in the journal Cell Reports.10 This interconnected network allows for rapid communication and distribution of energy, but the network may also be jeopardized when elements are damaged. One of the primary factors that impact mitochondrial health is your nutrition. When carbohydrates are used as the primary fuel, as the majority eating a Western diet are doing, it generates a great amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and secondary free radicals. Over time, this causes mitochondrial impairment and dysfunction, resulting in the development of chronic illness and disease. Your mitochondria are supported by several nutrients in your diet, including CoQ10, B vitamins, vitamin K2, magnesium and animal-based omega-3 fats. The combination of CoQ10 and selenium has demonstrated improved heart function and reduced mortality.11 There is a significant link between the health of your mitochondria and your risk for cardiovascular disease. Mitochondrial Impairment May Have Strongly Influenced Study Results In 2015, the CDC shared that 36.7 percent of Americans either took statin medications or should take them to reduce their cholesterol levels.12 Recommendations released in 2017 edge that number even higher.13 These rising numbers may play a role in the increasing rate of people who suffer chronic problems, such as chronic urinary tract infections, amnesia and headaches, abdominal pain, abnormal liver function and muscle pain and spasms.14 Researchers have found statins have a negative effect on mitochondrial function, some of which is dose dependent.15 Statin medications predispose the individual to mitochondrial defects that may respond to the administration of CoQ10. Statin-induced muscle disease is the most common reason why people discontinue the drug.16 The incidence varies from 5 percent to 29 percent of patients who use these drugs. The milder form is more common and also likely affects heart function. Statins also inhibit vitamin K2 dependent processes in the body,17 one of which is to prevent arterial stiffening, known as arteriosclerosis.18 One of the functions of K2 is to move calcium into the proper areas of your body, such as bones and teeth, and remove it from your arteries. As your arteries become less pliable, your blood pressure rises, increasing the work of your heart and your risk for heart disease and stroke. Published data shows individuals with a high intake of vitamin K2 may have up to a 57 percent reduced risk of cardiovascular disease than those whose vitamin K2 intake is lower or usage is impaired, such as in the consumption of statin drugs.19 Statins also block your body's ability to manufacture ketones, a cleaner burning fuel that produces far fewer ROS and free radical damage. The enzyme that produces ketones in your liver is the same enzyme blocked by statin medications, as it also produces cholesterol. Statin Medication Trend Puts Lives at Risk If the risk of a medication includes a "common" side effect of cardiovascular death, you would hope the effectiveness outweighs the risks. In this case, the risk of taking a statin medication far outweighs any benefit. In fact, according to the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force,20 250 people have to take statins for up to six years to prevent a single death.21 Within those six years, many more will have suffered the side effects and mitochondrial damage from the statin medications that natural means of balancing nutrients to protect heart health does not trigger. Statin advocates developed a statistical tool that has drastically increased the number of people who would "benefit" from statin medications. However, a report in the Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology concludes this tool used relative risk reduction to amplify what amounts to trivial benefits.22 This same report found clinical trials succeeded in minimizing the significance of a large number of adverse effects. In a second study in the same publication, study authors found that statins were not only less effective as commonly communicated, but they may also contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease.23 Benefits of Balanced Micronutrients Ensuring a balance of essential micronutrients may benefit your heart health and your overall health in ways science is only beginning to understand. Biochemist Bruce Ames has dedicated much of his professional life to studying the effect that micronutrient insufficiency may have on the aging processes. Through his work he developed the Triage Theory of Aging, published in 2006.24 He found micronutrient deficiencies were associated with DNA damage and early aging. As a result, he proposed the body shunts micronutrients where they are immediately needed for short-term survival at the expense of long-term health. For example, a short-term, emergency release of calcium from bone to the blood stream to reduce metabolic acidosis caused by several factors, including low potassium or magnesium levels, exercise or high protein intake, is necessary for immediate survival, but when repeated often results in osteoporosis. His research included mitochondrial function, showing that optimizing micronutrient intake could optimize metabolism and reduce mitochondrial impairment and decay.25 During an interview with Life Extension, he pointed to several recent studies that have demonstrated a link between vitamin K deficiency and coronary heart disease.26 Scientists are still discovering how complex the human body is and how interconnected each organ system is to another. An insufficiency in one micronutrient may not produce overt symptoms of deficiency, but over time will likely produce symptoms of chronic illness and disease as your body struggles to survive on less than what is necessary for optimal health. My food pyramid is nearly the inverse of the original USDA food pyramid, featuring healthy fats and vegetables on the bottom, followed by high quality proteins and fruit and lastly grains. The plan is designed to help you eat your way to better health, incorporating foods that are high in nutrient value. You can read more about how to balance your nutritional intake in my previous article, "My Updated Nutritional Plan — Your Guide to Optimal Health."
