DomKat’s physical and emotional chemistry: That quick sexy Lift thing that Nicole does with Waverly

This is Part 2 in a meta series in observing how DomKat portray physical and emotional intimacy as WayHaught

These physically intimate bodily responses from the Season 2 episode 'Shed Your Skin' and the Season 4 episode 'Crazy' are likely more improvised on the spot by Kat than choreographed by anyone. Kat portrays Nicole lifting Dom portraying Waverly onto her waist in a playfully dominant action to engage in physical intimacy with her. Not only does this require great chemistry between them but also immense trust as, because it's likely improvised on the spot, there would be no indication to Dom that Kat was going to do that. Having that established trust between them throughout all their intimate scenes would provide them freedom to slip into improvisation where bodily responses are much more immediate and quick than they would be if they were choreographed and have to be remembered. It absolutely still requires acting talent because improvisation is still a performance and all of the best actors always include improvisation in their performances. Especially when performing physical intimacy. 

Lucy Lawless, for example, is very adept at this and this is why I liken Waverly and Nicole to Xena and Gabrielle when it comes to their physical and emotional intimacy. A lot of body language is used to communicate and convey their intentions and emotions in scenes. What it shows most of all to me when Kat does this quick sexy Lift thing is that these two actors are very comfortable with being in each other's personal space. Most probably because their friendship off-screen is just as comfortable and natural and they can play off of each other seamlessly without any kind of direction or choreography. Their body language is at a level where they do not need words to communicate with each other, nor any scripted action or behaviour which is just how it also is with Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor. 

But nevertheless - friendship, no friendship - it still requires talent because improvisation performing is not something just anyone can do. You can ask any dancer or athlete the same and they will tell you what it takes to be able put their mind aside to achieve these feats. Kat Barrell may not be either but she's very good at physical acting and even something as small and simple as this action proves it. Dom's ability to anticipate Kat's bodily response with their own response in that they react to Kat's by immediately jumping into her arms just displays immense trust in their connection as their on-screen characters as well as their off-screen connection as friends. It's really something and likely couldn't be done with anyone else. These two actors share a very special camaraderie with each other that allows them the ease to just go with the flow in their intimate scenes and observing and examining it as closely as I am right now only makes me love their physical and emotional chemistry all the more because I can see how natural and organic it is between them. I have watched so many other physically intimate scenes between other actors where that's not the case at all and it looks incredibly contrived and awkward and you feel like the characters are violating each other’s personal space because they don’t look comfortable at all. The energy between them is off-putting to watch. I never feel that way with either Xena and Gabrielle or Waverly and Nicole because I just see how right it is for them to be together. In actual fact what I'm witnessing is the organic, natural, real chemistry between the actors when performing intimacy in their scenes. While it's true that Lucy and Renee had very little of the physical to portray compared to Kat and Dom, I can still tell that had they been allowed to portray that same level of physical intimacy as their characters, it would be as seamless because of their friendship combined with their talents in improvisation and physical acting.

In other words - I COULD very much see Waverly and Nicole do justice to Xena and Gabrielle cosplay and vice versa because the level of chemistry between Lucy and Renee and Kat and Dom is similar, as is their level of acting talent and ability together as well as individually. I always say there will never be any other WLW ship like Xena and Gabrielle BUT partially the reason why I say that is because of the unique way in which they provided queer representation with them. It had to be carefully written and performed as to appease studio censors prohibiting their physical intimacy as a WLW couple - hence why their emotional intimacy was amped up to the max. That will always be what makes them really stand out as a WLW ship compared to any other ever. But the level of chemistry between Lucy and Renee has been officially achieved in my opinion with Kat and Dom. I see and feel just as much chemistry between Kat and Dom as I do with Lucy and Renee to the point where if they were to be put on a panel together in competition discussing their characters and the intimacy that they portrayed for them, I'd hear much the same answers back from both duos. If anything DomKat would win with actually remembering their scenes because Lucy and Renee have never been the greatest with remembering, and that's fair enough since their show ended a longer time ago and they don't watch and rewatch as fans themselves which DomKat have spoken about doing several times in panels. So, yes, there is a lot of difference but there is a lot of similarity as well. They are both honestly the best representation I've ever seen in portraying very natural and organic intimate WLW ships where it is as real and authentic as it possibly could be in TV art/entertainment at the time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is like Xena and Gabrielle walked so Waverly and Nicole could fly. This is great progression for WLW and queer representation and I will talk more about the similarities between these WLW ships when I move on to the parts of this meta series addressing emotional intimacy because there is really distinctive parallels there that need to be acknowledged on this subject.

Have We Reached Peak Taylor Swift? The Psychology Behind When Someone Becomes Overexposed.

Is Taylor Swift about to be in her 'overexposed' era?

Midway through the Eras Tour, Taylor Swift is everywhere.

The ongoing tour ― Swift is scheduled to resume the international leg in November ― and the subsequent concert film are certifiable cultural events that have actually boosted regional economies. (In Los Angeles, for instance, where Swift performed six shows, the California Center for Jobs and the Economy predicted a $320 million boost to the county. No wonder Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau practically begged the Grammy winner to visit up north.)

She’s even bolstering the NFL’s viewership: Since the “Cruel Summer”

singer started attending her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs games, the league has seen some Super Bowl-level numbers thanks to all the Swifties tuning in.

Meanwhile, the media coverage is breathless. While daytime talk show hosts ask Kelce’s mom about Swift, there’s play-by-play of the couple’s dates around the web: “They were in a rounded booth sitting super close to each other in deep convo the whole time,” a diner at the Waverly Inn in Greenwich, where Swift and Kelce dined on Sunday, told The Messenger. “It looked super romantic and was super intimate.”

But given Swift’s cultural dominance ― and NFL fans booing an ad for her concert doc early this month ― even her fans are a little worried that Taylor fatigue might soon set in. Is Swift due for another “overexposed” era?

“Kinda overwhelmed by how close Taylor is to overexposure,” one fan tweeted on X.

“You either die the hero or live long enough to admit that you have Taylor Swift fatigue,” another wrote on the site.

On the main Swift subreddit, fans debate if Swift will eventually go back into pop star hibernation like she did after her “1989” album.

Indeed, this isn’t Swift’s first go-around with overexposure. The success of “1989” in 2014 was followed by a heightened interest in Swift’s personal life: her famous friends (or her “squad”), her ill-fated romance with Tom Hiddleston, her drama with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. In response, Swift made a “conscious choice to disappear” and opt for a more “lowkey” life, a source close to the singer told People at the time.

Her rollout of her next album, 2017’s “Reputation,” was relatively quiet. (“There will be no further explanation. There will just be reputation,” Swift remarked on Instagram.)

Swift seems to pay close attention to her fandom and cultivate those parasocial relationships, said Lynn Zubernis, a psychologist and professor at West Chester University who researches fan psychology.

“Who knows, she might consider withdrawing from the spotlight again at some point,” Zubernis told HuffPost.

The professor likened the “Anti-Hero” singer’s ubiquity right now to Barney in the ’90s. Parents loved the purple dinosaur initially (no one kept their kids as entertained), but that love soured by the 104th listen of the “I love you, you love me” theme song.

“Familiarity is part of what drives fandom — we’re wired to attach to familiar faces, whether they’re offline or on our screens — but there’s a limit to how much repetition we can tolerate,” Zubernis said. “Too many instances of someone popping up and behaving the same way or saying the same thing can start to grate.”

The overexposure is sometimes exacerbated by the celebrity being perceived as “trying too hard” or being inauthentic, Zubernis said: Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, even Lady Gaga come to mind, she said.

“At first their ‘antics’ were popular, but people soon grew tired and cynical about them,” she said. “Justin Bieber, James Franco, Shai LaBeouf and Kanye West fall into that category too, and all have been on lists of ‘celebrities we’re tired of’ as a result.”

There’s also a common trajectory that fandom tends to take: Fans love to root for their favorite celebrity ― or sports team or TV series ― because of that vicarious sense of success they gain, but there’s also a cost to that success and visibility, Zubernis said. Some fans jump ship.

“Fans also relish feeling ‘special’ and seeing their fandom as exclusive ― as in, we are the only ones who see how truly special this person is and appreciate her,” the professor said.

“Once someone like Swift becomes beloved by everyone, even ‘normies,’ the fandom doesn’t feel as exclusive anymore,” she added. (Think how in high school, you used to say, “Yeah, I liked that band when they were still underground.”)

Jaye L. Derrick, an associate professor of psychology who studies parasocial relationships at the University of Houston, has a different take: She thinks that most of the people complaining about Swift were never fans to begin with.

“She has a very large following, but no celebrity can make 100% of the population like them,” Derrick told HuffPost.

“As Taylor Swift is shown to new markets, she is meeting some pushback from people who may have been aware of her before but never sought her out,” she said. “I suspect that most of the negative exposure is from people who had maybe consciously avoided her before and are not able to avoid her anymore.”

Tracy Gleason, the chair and professor of psychology at Wellesley College and an author of a paper on parasocial relationships, agrees with Derrick. The fans at the Giants game who booed her ad, for instance, might have done so because she’s dating a player on a rival team.

“Another possible explanation for the football game is that people who are fans of football, some of whom are likely women, are not necessarily fans of Taylor Swift,” Gleason told HuffPost. “Seeing Taylor get more attention than the game itself might have felt distracting and annoying.”

“Who knows, though,” she added. “Maybe they are Swifties but just want to keep each of the things they enjoy in their own lane: Taylor belongs on the stage and football belongs in the arena.”

Is misogyny at play when we deem someone “overexposed”?

When it comes to conversations about fame, some have pointed out that it tends to be women that get the whiplash “love-hate” treatment: They’re celebrated at first, then they’re deemed overexposed, like Anne Hathaway or Jennifer Lawrence were after their respective Oscar campaigns.

For the most part, men have more room to navigate fame: There’s a double-standard for the type of behavior that is considered appropriate for men versus for women, Derrick said.

For starters, men are expected to express their agency, so they are allowed to promote their projects.

“For women, it is harder to engage in agentic behavior without people viewing them as too in-your-face,” Derrick said. “In American society, we traditionally expect women to be more communal and less agentic.” (Swift addresses this complicated bind for women in the song “The Man” from 2019 album “Lover.”)

The professor thinks these women would probably get a pass if they were “trying too hard” to promote something communal, like a charity, but over-promoting yourself is a cardinal sin in celebritydom if you’re a woman.

With male examples of overexposure, it usually results from some publicly frowned-upon behavior: Bieber was a notoriously bratty teen (which is hardly a crime, of course, but his reputation persists), West was accused of antisemitism, Franco and LaBeouf were both accused of sexual misconduct, and Elon Musk has been accused of not only damaging Twitter (or as he’s rebranded, X) but threatening democracy itself.

Women celebrities are shamed for bad behavior, too, of course, but also for deviating from social expectations, Zubernis said.

“The culture still isn’t all that comfortable with women being very visible or powerful or successful in some way; that idea is vaguely threatening to the status quo,” she said. “I think that would apply to Swift, Hathaway and Lawrence.”

If you were a fan of any of those women to begin with, though, you probably stuck by them through and through. Fandoms tend to be ride or die until something truly cancellable happens.

“There are times when fans will turn on a celebrity, but those are usually cases where the celebrity did something out-of-character that led people to become disillusioned with their brand,” Derrick said.

In other words, when it comes to these “overexposed” claims ― or criticism from non-fans who wish Swift would take a sabbatical ― Swifties worldwide are probably just going to “shake it off.”

her mother had gotten into an accident six months ago and while driving to go visit her, noa & bennett were in a car accident of their own. one he didn't make it out of. after his death, she moved back to town to help her mother out in the hopes that she could forget everything she's lost. she got a job at the local elementary school and has tried to move forward with her life.

noa was lucky; that's what everyone says. a few scars to add to the collection, but nothing as bad as it could have been. she can't help but to wonder why she lived when her husband didn't. he was the kind soul who wanted to help the less fortunate; she was just an artist who couldn't seem to make it big. and if it was just a sick twist of fate that she lived when he didn't, then what comes next?

MEGANGATE: A Complete History

Given the way the lore of Megangate keeps cropping up in the Clue Crew and because some people have expressed confusion as to what it was, I thought I'd compile a COMPLETE history of Megangate so that even if you weren't there, you can feel like you were! This is compiled entirely through my own point of view; although I was very involved and kept regular tabs on #Megangate drama, I may well be missing information or funny posts that were a part of it. I encourage you to add anything I missed!

Long post, so TL;DR: During the pandemic, a bunch of us went insane trying to figure out who was behind the sideblog @picture-of-megan that literally just posted pictures of Megan Vargas from Warnings at Waverly Academy as that was a meme at the time. Full story under the cut.

The Setup

Even before Megangate, Picture of Megan was a meme in the Clue Crew. It all began with a post by @shawnandthecenturion-blog from 2014, six full years before Megangate would be upon us.

(For those who haven't played or watched Warnings at Waverly Academy, there is a part where you need to get a picture of someone named Megan by beating another character at air hockey, which can be difficult.)

From then on, we joked that a picture of Megan would be rewarded whenever we truly botched puzzles or needed a pity win:

This meme floated harmlessly around the Clue Crew for six years or so until April of 2020, when a sideblog called @picture-of-megan (or POM, as it was later known) appeared, and rewarded Clue Crewers expressing frustration with puzzles with pictures of Megan:

The blog revealed no personal details or links to their mains or other sideblogs, but knowing the in-joke, they were obviously a member of the community. Being mystery fans who were stuck inside, it didn't take long for people to start asking who was behind POM...

The Controversy

The first accusations of Megangate, to my knowledge, occurred on April 27th of 2020. After some discussions about who POM could be, which even included analyzing typing patterns and emojis, @henrikvanderswoon accused @knockoutqueenoftheunderworld in this historic post. In short, she believed that @knockoutqueenoftheunderworld was in a Tumblr chat with herself because the URL of POM was listed first, which wasn't the case when she messaged other people, leading her to believe that the culprit had slipped up and the chat had actually been screenshotted from POM's perspective.

Of course, this was debunked quickly as general Tumblr bugginess in this subsequent post. But the first accusation had been made, and it had been made with memes and Ace Attorney-esque argumentation. It was undeniably fun, and soon accusation after accusation was flying right and left as people were trying anything to reveal who was behind the blog. (The linked accusations are only a small sampling of the accusations flying around at the time; everyone had their own theories and they weren't afraid to share them!) At one point, I sent anons to almost every Nancy Drew blog I followed and to POM to see who would respond closest to when POM responded... It was a dark and desperate time.

Because of this, I was dubbed the head investigator of Megangate, a title I took proudly (I made the sideblog @megangate to save important Megangate-related posts), and I was even invited to the @clue-crew-podcast episode that week, covering Megangate... WHERE POM HERSELF WAS ALSO INVITED TO SPEAK:

This, of course, largely eliminated myself and the three others who hosted the podcast (@naancypants, @professorhotchkissesta, and @hurricanesonny). POM's speaking voice also made it unlikely that the culprit was a male, so the few male members of the Clue Crew were largely dismissed as suspects as well.

But far more importantly, POM herself had teased a reveal! The end was in sight...

The Copycats

Now, Megangate was getting a lot of attention. From the beginning, reply-heavy posts and accusations dominated peoples' dashes, and the memes were booming. (The memes linked are, of course, only a small sampling.) This was, understandably, annoying to some people, but others wanted in on the action!

As mentioned in the podcast, as Megangate gained more attention, copycat blogs and anons falsely claiming to be POM herself started taking off. @picture-of-picture-of-megan, @painting-of-megan, and @picture-of-painting-of-megan all sprung up in one day. Anon messages like this one appeared in many inboxes, spurring more controversy with their choices of emojis. Before POM herself denied ever sending anons, it was difficult to discern the fakers from the real POM, and some were made with the intent of framing others.

Additional copycats, like @horse-shirt, @bucket-himself, and a Dwayne Powers persona blog sprung up, taking on the identities of people or objects from the games.

You'll notice that a lot of these blogs aren't around anymore... That's because the copycat blogs came and went remarkably fast, as they didn't gain nearly as much attention as the original POM.

The Reveal

As promised, the original POM blog launched an online puzzle series event that would culminate in her reveal. This was excellent timing, as many of us had gone as far as we could with our investigations and were getting nowhere fast.

In a rather cryptic reply, POM set a date for her reveal. Graciously, she specifically made it after my university classes let out so that I could devote myself more to her reveal puzzles.

On May 9th, 2020, after quite the hype, POM dropped this link. A webpage with a puzzle for every Nancy Drew game, truly a treasure for us, like a love letter to the games and the community. Nancy Drew-themed playlists made by members of the Clue Crew were promoted on the site for people to listen to while they worked, and POM happily gave out hints. People worked individually or in groups to finish all of the puzzles and put together POM's true identity. I would highly recommend visiting the site and playing through the puzzles yourself, as they're all still functional and it's much more satisfying to see the reveal video after working for it.

Overall, Megangate was just such a weird and wonderful thing that was made a billion times better by the culprit's willingness to not only go along with the whole thing, but design such a wonderful series of puzzles. I really think it helped bring us together as a community, and it was very rewarding for those who chose to get involved. I would like to say that the only reason I went so far in for Megangate was because the pandemic made me a little looney but... well, I just spent an hour typing up this retelling of it. I would love to see more weirdness like Megangate in the future, and I hope that if that happens, people don't hesitate to get involved, make your own posts and accusations, and have fun with it!

I really can't thank the mastermind behind POM enough; it was definitely the highlight of my experience in the Clue Crew on Tumblr, and I've been here for ten years this year!!

kairi was born to euryale, a gorgon of ill-repute, and kenji mori, a sea serpent. her mother's romance with her father was short-lived; by the time she realized she was pregnant, her lover had already been killed by humans who hated their kind. that's the story kairi had always been told, at least. in reality, kenji mori was a human who fell in love with a gorgon despite the myths and rumors that accompanied euryale. after accidentally being turned to stone during a break-in as the gorgon was attempting to stop the intruders, some wayward humans set on disrupting euryale's peace accidentally destroyed the kenji statue and killed the first man she ever loved. she didn't even realize she was pregnant until much later.

and so kairi has lived most of her life in ignorance as to the truth about her father, in part because euryale wanted her child to stay away from humanity but also because she felt guilt over her own part in his demise. after all, if he hadn't been accidentally turned to stone by her, he would still be alive, and they could have raised their child together. it was simply a series of unfortunate events that ended with his untimely death.

while her mother hoped to instill a hatred towards humans in her child, kairi feels more fear towards them more than anything. curiosity as to how they live their life so...normally, but still a sense of fear and anxiety nonetheless.

euryale, true to her name, was far-roaming, and the pair traveled the world, never settling any place for more than a year at a time. and kairi found it hard to make any sort of lasting connection because of this despite her desire for connection.

attending monster university was kairi's chance to form roots finally in her life. while she will always love her mother and has been very appreciative of being able to travel the world, she wanted something a little more stable for once. so she moved to the university and has been happy here ever since.

The time has come to decide our finalists. The winners of these polls will represent their respective half of the bracket, and determine who the Fan-favorite Georgias player is. (or at least, the Fan-favorite as far as the people on Tumblr voting in this bracket are concerned).

Our final four candidates are all Georgias OGs from the Expansion Era, including Rigby Friedrich (one of the league's all-time best performers), Niq Nyong'o (arguably the most important player in our lore), Flattery McKinley (a magnet of misfortune that caused many of our most memorable stories), and Neerie McCloud (who spent so long Elsewhere, her name pretty much became synonymous with it). You know who didn't dominate their respective poll? Flattery McKinley, who only narrowly beat out Fish Summer with 51.6% of the vote, officially marking the closest poll of the entire event! This was also the poll with the most votes, getting 64 votes total.

The final four players are, in fact, seeds 1-4, showing I probably did something right with my seeding process.

As much as I hated that Nicole did this, I loved that they had this drama and conflict between them because this is the same kind of thing you would get with a heterosexual couple. Usually the man exerting control over the woman and being the dominant figure in the relationship. Making decisions for the other.

It’s so rare to see this kind of conflict in a queer couple in TV art/entertainment. Especially WLW couples.

While it doesn’t put queer or WLW couples in the best light, it does equalize them to heterosexual couples. Shows that they can be just as toxic and abusive. It’s one of the main reasons why I love Tara and Willow actually despite how much I hate what Willow does.

Creators are so concerned with showing positive representation in queer couples that they actively avoid showing the fights and conflict and drama and abuse when all of that comes with the territory too. And if it’s written well, it can actually help to show positive representation if you play the long game.

Problem is the long game is usually cut short so it doesn’t have the chance to be turned to positive.

That’s what happened with ‘First Kill’. They ended the show with the WLW couple broken up because they didn’t expect an abrupt cancellation after one season.

And as for Tara and Willow… Well, they shot Tara right after they made up. So there was no opportunity to turn that around either. Have them really talk about what went wrong and become stronger because of it.

So besides Xena and Gabrielle, this is actually the first time that I’ve seen a WLW couple play the long game in that they represent the negative moments of the relationship as well as the positive and basically use the negative to evolve the relationship even more into a positive place and the reality of the back and forth.

So I actually really appreciate all this WayHaught drama and conflict that resembles the same kind of situations that you’d see in heterosexual couples. It makes them far more real and relatable because of it.

Creators nowadays are so afraid to do this because of representation anxiety and cancellation anxiety. They don’t want the last moments of the show to end on a sour note for the queer couple and face the backlash. It’s understandable because it can happen out of the blue that a show just gets axed like that before the creators have any time to properly conclude the arc.

So I never blame the creators when this happens. Only the network/streaming service because they couldn’t care a less what story arcs in the show are and aren’t concluded and what characters and their relationships to each other and developments are cut short. So if they end off a queer or WLW couple in a bad place - it’s really just as awful for the creators as it is the fans.

The creator of ‘Wynonna Earp’ promised the fans a happy ending for WayHaught and she delivered because she had an early enough notice about a possible cancellation in Season 4 and therefore could provide a proper and satisfying conclusion for every story arc, every character and ever relationship.

Most creators do not ever get that chance because they are never told by the network early enough.

Queer couples do not get the long game. But believe me - 99% of creators want it just as bad as we do.

I love sibcest sooooo much. I think jalex from Wizards of Waverly Place was legitimately one of my very first ships and that fundamentally shaped me as a person lmao. I especially love when the younger sibling is more dominant or takes control of the relationship more.

I still don't know what this means in the context of shipcest lmao but I'd read most canon unrelated ships in sibcest AUs if given the chance. Where are these AUs. Give them to me immediately.

Yeah, I think it’s mine too because what I really love about it is the notion that Nicole held all this back until Waverly gave the go ahead. All her passion and desire for her. Because she realized it couldn’t be her that makes the moves because of how that could be perceived. She could let her know that she’s interested but couldn’t go any further than that. She had to wait for Waverly. She’s passing off all the agency on to her. It proves she deserves her because she’s not treating her either like a child or like a trophy.

It could have sent an entirely different message if not.

And then a scene like this would look predatory.

They made the right choice having Waverly initiate it. Nicole now no longer feels like she needs to hold back.

So it’s such a stunning scene for the relief Nicole feels as well as the bravery and determination of Waverly.

I just love how the moment Waverly kisses her Nicole flips their positions and allows herself to be dominate and then how Waverly smiles at her afterwards even though she’s clearly surprised. It’s what she wants.

Nicole sees this and then throws all caution to the wind because she now knows Waverly wants this.

It’s just those subtle silent exchanges of energy between them constantly conveying consent.

It makes a huge fucking difference compared to other WLW make out or sexual intimacy scenes I’ve seen.

Their romantic/sexual arcing is written very well.

My Lesbian Epiphany

below the cut is a personal narrative about my experience realizing i'm a nonbinary lesbian, written for my college English credit course. from my instructor's positive feedback, i thought i would share it with the world somehow.

An average day of second grade was passing by quickly. I came home from school, zipped through my homework, and planted myself in front of the television. Remote in hand, I cycled through my channels of choice. Nothing new on Nickelodeon, nor anything interesting on Cartoon Network. In a last-ditch effort, I switched to the Disney Channel.

That’s when I saw her. Nested in a typical episode of Wizards of Waverly Place, a teen girl with beautiful, shoulder-length hair blazed with a blonde streak in her side-swept fringe tendrils. Her outfit, her accessories, her “cool rebel girl” attitude! I couldn’t help but lean in closer, entranced. With this character, named Stevie, I could not question it: I was attracted to other girls.

There were various other signs to come, for example, in middle school. On a day I was sporting a tank top that didn’t quite fit me, I walked the regular route to my next class with a classmate. She took notice of what I was wearing, with my bra exposed, and decided to comment.

“Luring in the boys, huh,  ◼◼◼◼◼?”

I neglected a response, mainly out of sheer confusion and discomfort in this attention drawn to my body. The conversation faded awkwardly by the time I arrived at my awaiting classroom. Before entering, I peered around the hall of students, routinely seeking any sign of the cute girl that dominated my school day thoughts.

Inevitably, high school rolled around. Ninth grade began how my eighth grade ended, mute, panicked, and constantly overwhelmed. However, something was on the horizon. That fall, I was introduced to an artist online who became enamored with me shortly after becoming friends. A month later, we were officially dating. He was a transgender man named Noel; his name chosen himself based on a character of a game we bonded over. Noel spoke with kindness and gentleness between his staple jokes. He confided in me his own journey of healing from his traumatic childhood experiences and even told me, “You can heal, too. I’ll be by your side for this process.”

 Is this…how it feels to be cared about? To actually feel loved by another person?  

A warm sensation fluttered in my chest. A feeling of safety amidst the boiling storm that was my first day at my new Youth Therapy Day Program. In awe of this tender young man, I felt a spark. A lit match to pass the flame to my Rube-Goldberg machine of candles. I don’t have to be what’s been pushed on me. I don’t have to be that girl, nor a girl at all!

I trekked through my first three years of high school under my new identity as a transmasculine nonbinary bisexual. It was a backpack of textbooks taken off my aching shoulders. However, by junior year, something started to worm back into my mind and fester. Suddenly, walking through the halls of my high school became a warzone for my soft, girl-adoring self. The sway of bobbed hair on one girl, fluttering eyelashes bordering crystalline eyes of another. Every girl I would see was gorgeous, my poor heart was skipping beats every day for a week.

Skeptical, I posed myself a question. Well, what about that boy over there, with the short hair? My mindscape would pause, before lighting up and melting over the idea of a girl with that exact haircut. Blushing at the thought of this made-up person, I was in dire need of what I call, a lesbian epiphany. Between assignments, I couldn’t help but think, what’s wrong with me? Girls are so pretty, I can’t stop staring but…I can’t be a lesbian, I get angry when people call me my birthname. Being called “she” makes my skin crawl.

Do… any lesbians feel like this, too?

I labored over these thoughts until I dashed straight to Tumblr, seeking validation for my identity and pure curiosity. Clicking past the artwork of the sapphic couples I longed to be, I typed “nonbinary lesbian” into the search bar and pressed the return key. Sure enough, there were numerous lesbians sharing experiences, just like mine. Lesbians using “he,” “they,” and even new, custom pronouns. Lesbians with chosen names. Lesbians who experience gender dysphoria and even transition.

“Oh… Oh my god.”

Something deep within me clicked. It’s possible. It’s allowed.

“Oh god, this is it! I’m a lesbian!” I could only whisper it, but had I been home alone and uninhibited, I would’ve screamed it out. I would’ve yelled it as loud as my vocal cords would permit me. Truly, that’s the essence of a lesbian epiphany.

It’s been three years now since I realized I was a lesbian. Despite new struggles, I never knew how comforting that single label could be. I would’ve never accepted this part of me, had I stayed within the scope of what representation lesbians got in common media. Even Stevie, my awakening, was written to be in a relationship with her media’s female protagonist, yet only allowed in subtext and disclosed after the fact.

Even Noel, the assured, clement transgender man, had his epiphany, just like me. In fact, he experienced the same fascinations and realization that I did, within a year of each other. I know two other gender diverse lesbians who reached the same destination, now flourishing with their queer partners in the paradise of lesbianism. That’s a joke, of course. Truly, there’s no one true way to be a lesbian. Every person under this label is different, and there’s no reason to change that. The disclosure of raw, personal stories is the key to my own journey, my lesbian epiphany.

andromeda finch was born to lucinda and kevin finch, a fairy mother and merman father, the second of two children. the finchs had a good and loving life, and it brought andie many ways to explore and have a large imagination. for as long as andie can remember, she was writing, making up stories, or playing pretend. running around with her older sibling throughout their family's bee farm, andie felt like she did have a good life. she was happy, and she felt safe.

growing up, andie was very close with her extended family, charlotte, waverly, and her cousin, alicia, especially. growing up andie and her often played pretend, andie initiating more and more stories. as they grew older, alicia drifted from the family and andromeda leaned into less adventures and more writing. by the age of fifteen, she wrote her first novel, though it never got published. after that, andie continued to write.

despite how close they were as kids, alicia and andie continued to grow further and further apart. andromeda felt upset, mostly because she felt that she had no control over it, she could see that alicia was struggling with something. andie fell more and more into her imagination, trying to escape the things she couldn't control.

everything changed when she was eighteen and she heard that alicia was dead. something in andie broke. that's when she truly started her novel. andromeda watched as alicia's family fell apart, even her own family hurt from alicia's death. not long after, the murders started to rise in northknot with the rise with the faction. andie decided that it was time to travel instead, taking many different semesters studying abroad, andie travelled from place to place, taking hold of the life she had.

when her second year of northknot university came around, she decided to stay in northknot. she took up a job helping her parents with the bee farm and making beeswax products and working on writing her novel to hopefully get this one published. while she is happy to find out that alicia is back after a spell put on the town blurring the veil between the ghosts and northknot, there is still a part of andie that is nervous about the murders. though she won't admit it, she is terrified of losing anyone else she loves.

charlotte monroe. aunt. andie and her aunt are pretty close. while andie can trust her mother with everything, charlotte was always the one andie went to to have some fun and ask questions that you wouldn’t be able to really ask your mother.

waverly monroe. aunt/uncle. andie enjoyed waverly being around, but now it’s been awkward since alicia died and the problems she had with charlotte. andie always thought waverly was pretty cool and wishes her the best.

saskia berry. friend. saskia loves bees, andie’s family owns a bee & berry farm, pretty self explanatory. andie is often dropping off beeswax products and honey to saskia.

lily got a cat shortly before her sixth year at hogwarts. it was a small thing, the runt of the litter, but she fell in love anyways. it wasn’t supposed to survive, but she recognized the determination and will to live and bottle fed him until he was healthy. she named him apollo, but calls him paul and brought him back to hogwarts with her, calling him her good luck charm. she's had him ever since.

while she is working with the order, she is also in training to become a healer at st. mungo's.

her parents died during her seventh year at hogwarts in a car accident. something so mundane when the world was filled with magic was something that never quite made sense to her. she threw herself into her studies afterwards as a way to cope.

lily’s favorite band is and has always been the beatles mainly due to her parents. they'd always play old records while making sunday morning breakfast, and laugh while dancing around the kitchen. after her parent's deaths, she inherited that record player and od records, and they never fail to cheer her up. some of her favorite memories include the beatles playing in the background.

lily's boggart has changed over the course of her life. when she was a child, it would have taken the form of the boogeyman her father told her stories about. while she was in hogwarts, it took the form of petunia turning her back on her. however after leaving hogwarts and seeing the direction the wizarding world may be heading, when people actually started dying, it took the form of her loved ones perishing while she stood by and watched.
