Help your helper against violence. For the past many months, my house help had been struggling with domestic violence, including physical abuse. Sadly, I had no inkling, till it grew to the extent that I had to intervene and help her register a case with the police. I was surprised, and ashamed, that I had been unable to see the signs of abuse of a Helper who had been looking after my house so that I could work in peace.
Domestic Workers vs Employers
During this process of helping her I learnt that it was common in her community to suffer emotional and physical abuse at the hands of husbands and in some cases the sons. However, these women largely chose to suffer in silence mainly due to the lack of awareness, social support, and self-confidence.
I think there would be many more like me who would like to help their Helpers who were victims of domestic abuse but might not know how to help. That is why this small write-up about some tips to help women who suffer domestic violence:
Know the signs: The abuse could be physical, which is easy to detect. But, it could also be emotional and/or verbal abuse, which makes the victim either extra aggressive or extra silent. Any change in behavior should therefore ring the alarm bell.
Similarly, there could be financial abuse, where the victim does not get money to take care of her needs, and in fact, might have her own salary also taken away by the abuser.
Educate your Helpers: Tell the Helpers that they should find out about the local help in their communities. These could include Mahila Mandals, local NGOs, as well as women’s cell in the local police station. They should also stay networked with their neighbors who can help them in need.
There is also “The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (DV Act) 2005”, for women undergoing domestic violence. The law in itself is woman-friendly.

They could use the old neighbourly approach of asking to borrow some sugar or salt as an excuse to intervene. The ringing of the bell would break the cycle of the violence at least at that time. This is something which they can all discuss and agree upon for use at any time in their own groups.
Help them with technology: If your Helper has a smartphone, help her download a free safety app for women, which they can use if they are in danger. This is especially helpful when domestic violence is physical.
Listen and be the back-up: Sometimes just by listening to a victim you can give them the confidence to report the matter. Your listening can make them believe that people will not judge them for the violence inflicted on them. In the absence of this confidence victims can feel isolated or belittled, or even guilty. Help them get out of this guilt. Let them know that you will be willing to support them in case they want to go to the authorities.
Make the calls: If the situation is beyond simple intervention, call the police or your local support services, or an NGO, which you can easily find on the Internet. You can do so even when you want to remain anonymous. Also, help the victim find the assistance she needs, whether it is legal information, local domestic violence programmes, or finding a safe place through a battered women’s shelter.
Document everything: Document any signs of abuse that you witness. This can be in the form of dates, notes, pictures and other similar things. This documentation can help if and when the victim decides to go to the authorities.

What is a familiar, and how do they fit into modern magic?
Definition
Familiars are spirits that act as assistants or guides to magic users, helping them with domestic and/or magical duties.
Familiars were and sometimes still are classified as a type of demonic spirit that often take the form of an animal, mostly thought to be cats, dogs, toads, and hares.
They are thought to help witches or magic users in domestic areas as well as in their magical affairs. Familiars can take on any color or shape.
In the 17th century, Familiars were more likely to be called “Imps”!
Etymology
The word Familiar comes from the Latin familiaris meaning "of or belonging to the family". Familiaris may come from the Latin word famulus meaning "slave" or "servant".
As far as we know, the first usage of the word in the context of witchcraft is attested from the 1560s. Before this, it was used as a noun meaning “familiar friend”.
History
The idea of familiars being a witch’s helper spirit was especially strong in the 17th century when King James I wrote about them in his book titled Daemonologie in which he talks about witches and their supposed "relations" with the devil.
This belief was most popular in East Anglian Europe and was scarcely found elsewhere during the witch trials.
The first recorded witch trial to reference a familiar in witchcraft is that of Dame Alice Kyteler, in 1324 (Wright 1833, p. 2) but it would be two centuries later that the idea of the witch's familiar took off.
Margaret Alice Murray talks about two different kinds of familiars The Witch-Cult in Western Europe: "those by which the witch divined and those who attended on the witch to obey her commands." *
Many historical accounts that we have regarding the confessions of supposed witches were likely falsified since the people being accused were under duress as they were being tortured. This doesn’t mean all historical accounts of Familiars are false, but we should take them with a grain of salt.
Most of the time those accused of witchcraft and of having "familiars" were lonely or isolated folks, likely older in age, that would talk to the animals probably similar to how we speak to our pets now.
However, keeping animals as pets wasn't too popular among the working class, and relationships with animals that were more than a farmer and his stock were seen as unnatural.
Cunning folk practices were said to involve familiars as well, though were often thought to be different than the witch’s “demonic” familiar and were sometimes referred to as the “fae” or “fairy” familiar in literature.
Side Note: We can’t talk about familiars without talking about demons!
“The noun meaning 'demon, evil spirit that answers one's call' is from the 1580s (familiar spirit is attested from 1560s); earlier as a noun it meant "a familiar friend" (late 14c.). The Latin plural, used as a noun, meant ‘the slaves,’ also ‘a friend, intimate acquaintance, companion.’ The usual ancient Greek sense, ‘supernatural agent or intelligence lower than a god, ministering spirit’ is attested in English from the 1560s and is sometimes written daemon or daimon for purposes of distinction. Famous Familiars
Familiar spirits were confessed to during the witch trials of Huntingdon. Two of their names were Greedigut and Grissel and they were given to the witch in spirit form by a demon who went by the name Blackeman. They were said to look like black dogs with hoglike, bristled hair on their back. -> It was said that they would do whatever their master requested and when they were not given a task would attack or rob passersby.
Agathion is a type of Familiar demonic spirit that can appear as an animal or a man. Once bound as a familiar it will live inside a ring or talisman of some sort. They were said to only appear at midday or to be most powerful at midday.
Sybacco was the familiar to the Comte de Corasse, the Comte de Foix, and Adriano Lemmi. Described as having bull horns and three eyes on his forehead, he is under the command of the demon Botiz.
Thomas "Tom" Reid was said to be the Familiar of Bessie Dunlop of Scotland, who was tried in 1576. Tom was described as the spirit of a soldier as well as an honest, elderly man. Tom told Bessie that he lived in Elfhame with the fae.
Boye was Prince Rupert’s dog that some believed to be his familiar due to their closeness and Boye’s tagging along during the British Civil War, though this was likely a smear campaign against the prince.
Similarities and Comparisons
Fylgr, a Norse guardian or “follower” spirit, was attached to a person related to their fate. These were often only seen by those with the ability to see the supernatural. In some cases, they would foretell the death of the person they followed but they weren’t inherently a sign of death.
Ancient Romans had genii that fall under the “helpful spirit” category, such as Lares Familiares which were household deities or spirits that were guardians of the family.
The Greeks believed in daimons which refer to supernatural beings between men and gods, such as minor gods or spirits of dead heroes. -> Some believed you could have personal daimons that acted as guides, guardians, or spiritual companions. Socrates was said to have a personal daimon, see: De Genio Socratis.
Fetches, historically considered bad omens, are now sometimes seen as a servitor spirit with a time limit that a person creates for a specific purpose. The Fetch will disappear once their task is completed or they’ve been dismissed. (pg 63-66 Barbarous Words) -> Originally, fetches were seen as a sort of spectral doppelganger, and seeing one foretold the death of the person they took the shape of.
Familiars in Modern Magic
Not dissimilar to their old definition, Familiars are seen as spirits that aid and guide witches. They are teachers, helpers, and companions.
Familiars can teach you magic, help with spells, or perform tasks for you.
They are not a pet. Treat a Familiar the way you’d treat a colleague or even a friend.
Divination is a great way to contact familiars. If you've done spirit work before then it's similar to contacting any other spirit.
Familiars are usually seen as a contractual spirit relationship.

Bhopal: My First impression
I traveled this Saturday to attend the Finals of the Startup Oasis competition for Ideate Unconvention, Bhopal. As the plane was getting ready to land. I looked out of the window for getting the first impression of Bhopal, which was the runner up in the Swachh Sarvekshan 2017. (the results of which had been recently announced). A part of me was skeptical since both first and second places had been taken by cities in MP. But, the view from the sky made a part of that skepticism go away: I could see an Aerial view of a green and decently planned city, with vast open spaces. I was already looking forward to a pleasant day ahead.
Got a cab and was soon on my way to IIFM. It was 7.30 in the morning. I rolled down the window and eagerly looked around: Most cars were driving with windows rolled down. No honking of vehicles around and everyone seemed to be enjoying the drive, without any pretensions of being in a more “urgent” situation than the next car. So, no overtaking, no rash driving, no breaking of signals.
The air was fresh and smelled of rains. What greeted me was a feast for the eyes after Mumbai: clean streets, no garbage dumpsters blocking the roads, no piles of garbage waiting to be picked up, and wonder of wonders: no construction material piled around. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seems to have been taken very seriously here.
No vehicles blocked our way, everything was parked in the correct place.
As is my habit, I got talking to the cabbie about his city and where he lived. I learned that even the domestic helpers and unorganized workers in Mumbai lived in clean multi-storey buildings provided by the government, unlike the unhygienic, claustrophobic shanties found in most metros. I already liked the city and its administration!
IIFM campus, the event venue was another story: about 20 peacocks greeted me as I entered the gates. Everyone preferred to walk to the gate, about 2 km from the venue, and explore IIFM Campus’s breathtaking beauty. Once outside, I could not help notice the well-marked out cycling tracks. On inquiry, I learned that Bhopal even has on offer cycles on rent, and the bus stands usually have cycle stands too. So, you not only get a cycle but can ride it too! I was already in love with the city. And, you can also hail auto-rickshaws on the app: something which I am yet to see in Mumbai, the city which survives because of autos.
There was more waiting to entice me.Everyone was polite and well mannered, be it the guard at the IIFM gate who helped me recharge my phone while insisting that I sit in his chair and wait for the cab, or the IIFM students who not only attended the event but also accompanied us to the gate on our walk back. On my way back to the Raja Bhoj Airport, my cab driver even asked me if I would like to pack some dinner as the airport did not have too many food options!
Strangers in the mall and at the airport took time to look at the big 4 feet long take away cheque we had won, and…after reading it every single one made it a point to smile at me, congratulate me or even ask me about the event. I wondered how people could make time to do that! Was it that the clean and green environment had had a soothing effect on everyone?
No one seemed to hurry, but everything happens in time, unlike most metros where everyone seems to be rushing around without much getting done.
Went to a mall to meet a friend in the evening, and another surprise awaited me: Two cold coffees for Rs. 120, and an authentic dish of Chokha Bati for just RS. 80…Involuntarily compared this with my city where a single coffee in a mall would have cost about Rs. 200. So, the city is clean, green, well-mannered as well as cost-effective. Wow!
On my way back, passed the Raja Bhoj lake. A vast expanse of water, but clean sparkling water, well-maintained walkways. But again no litter even though crowds were thronging the place. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan again on display. And the cabbie actually took pride in showing off the lake, and all the other places that we passed by! And that is when I realized the simplest way to make any city worth living in is that everyone, irrespective of their social standing, should have a reason to feel pride in their city.
Find a way to do that and automatically everyone will want to make their city better. Maybe that is why we are at our best behavior in the metro and worst in a local. Unlike a metro, a local has no aspirational value attached to it. How the Bhopal administration did this will make for another piece of writing, another day. For now, I will just say that I came back totally enamoured by the place, ready to retire in the city if possible. After all, how many cities can boast to have a real amalgamation of history as well as modernity without the negativity it is often associated with?
