Arizona Cardinals 2020 Position Breakdowns: Defensive Line
The Arizona Cardinals supplied depth along their defensive line at the onset of the 2020 season by drafting two rookies, Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence, in the fourth round of April’s draft, while also adding pieces in free agency. Still, the position saw a constant rotation under coach Brentson Buckner.
Marquee free-agent acquisition Jordan Phillips experienced sporadic success in his first season in the desert while dealing with several injuries, veteran nose tackle Corey Peters was lost for the season with a knee injury in Week 10 and the position group saw an influx of new players and elevations from the practice squad by year’s end.
Strengths
Two bright spots were the play of second-year defensive tackle Zach Allen and first-year Cardinal Angelo Blackson, who led the position group in tackles with 35 and 24, respectively.
The interior of the defensive line, while not flashy statistically, was physically imposing and took attention away from some of the team’s outside pass rushers when Peters and Phillips were healthy and active. In their absence, the team signed veteran Domata Peko Sr., who filled the role respectively well and finished the year third among defensive linemen in tackles with 16.
As a position group, the defensive line accumulated 12.5 sacks, which was equal to that of outside linebacker Haason Reddick. In defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s 3-4 scheme, defensive linemen are not relied on to rush as much as in other systems.
Weaknesses
The Cardinals defensive line had consistent trouble generating pressure and clogging passing lanes of opposing quarterbacks.
There were no eye-popping statistical performances from the defensive line this year and marquee players such as Phillips, Peters and others were not available for the entirety of the season.
Fotu and Phillips flashed at times, but still were green and had rookie moments in their first season in the NFL.
Key facts and figures
○ Allen led the unit in tackles with 35, followed by Blackson with 24 and Peko Sr. with 16
○ Blackson had the most sacks of the group with 2.5
○ Phillips was second on the entire team in forced fumbles with two and no other defensive lineman had stats in the category
○ The Cardinals allowed 6.6 receiving yards per attempt against running backs
○ Arizona was No. 21 in the NFL in rushing defense, allowing 125.5 yards per game
Standouts
DT/NT Angelo Blackson: After being released by the Houston Texans, the Cardinals pounced on signing Blackson to a one-year contract in September. He was productive and flashed more than others in the position group on a consistent basis, leading the team in sacks (2.5) and second in tackles (24). Blackson started as a defensive tackle in Joseph’s 3-4 scheme, but converted to nose tackle later in the year after Peters was lost to injury.
DT Zach Allen: In his second year with the franchise, Allen made strides while also dealing with inconsistent availability due to injury. While he led the position group in tackles with 35, he missed three games due to lingering issues. Still, he managed to add two sacks to his resume during the season and showed glimpses of why he garnered third-round NFL Draft designation.
Upcoming key free agents
• Corey Peters (UFA)
• Domata Peko Sr. (UFA)
• Angelo Blackson (UFA)
Blackson and Peko Sr. were mid-year signees on one-year deals to stopgap a shortage in depth. In turn, they were the team’s second- and third-leading tacklers among defensive linemen. Does that warrant new contracts? It is a question that general manager Steve Keim and Co. need to consider.
The team took two defensive linemen in the 2020 draft and could target the position again, especially if the team decides not to bring back Peters, who was a captain last season and commanded a hefty salary. Injury concerns with this being his second major knee issue could lead to uncertainty regarding his future in Arizona.
Otherwise, the Cardinals return everyone at the position that they choose not to release, including some options who ended the year on the practice squad and have since been signed to reserve/future contracts.
While depth does not appear to be a major issue, the talent disparity could be a concern.

Bengals Preview: Week 11 @ Broncos
If the game at Jacksonville felt like a hopeless cause for the Bengals, the game at Tennessee left the season feeling hopeless. Per FiveThirtyEight, a team with a 3-6 record has a 3% chance of making the postseason.
The last such team to do so – the 2012 Washington Redskins – finished the season at 10-6. The last such team to do so with a 9-7 record was the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars, with names like Mark Brunell and Tony Boselli. That team made it to the AFC Championship game before losing to the New England Patriots.
If there’s a member of the Bengals faithful who genuinely believes that this team is capable of such a run, they’re a better fan than this organization deserves.

Analysis
A couple oddities here – first among them being that the Bengals cut Pat Sims on Saturday and elevated linebacker Hardy Nickerson from the practice squad. Second, the fact that of the eleven names that escaped the Broncos’ injury report without a game designation, three of them (Charles, Peko Sr., Talib) were listed with an ‘NIR’ injury (non-injury related).
What does that mean? Realistically, nothing. A cursory glance through Denver’s injury reports over the weeks shows all three players frequently carrying the designation, not participating in Wednesday practices and appearing fine otherwise. None of them have a reduced chance of seeing the field on Sunday.
On paper, this isn’t a matchup that inspires a lot of interest – the Broncos are in the same place as the Bengals for similar reasons. The Broncos have a quarterback vacuum while the Bengals have an anemic running game; both teams have defenses that might be ready to compete were it not for an utter lack of takeaways (Cincinnati has eight this season, tied for 30th in the NFL; Denver has seven).
As with every other week, the Bengals’ offensive production depends on how well A.J. Green performs. Denver’s defense comes in at eighth in the NFL in passing yardage allowed per game (204.0), while playing at a slightly lower level than the “No-Fly Zone” of recent years. The Bengals offensive line, especially on the bookends, looks like a glaring weakness in this matchup (even with the Shane Ray and Shaquil doing less to help Von Miller this season than expected).
The Bengals defense, as a whole, looks like more than a match for this Broncos offense. Regardless of the ceilings we’ve seen from receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders (among others), it’s been some time since we’ve seen production near that level from them. Having Brock Osweiler under center only exacerbates this problem for the Broncos.
Predictions
Vegas Odds (11/18): Denver (-2.5); Over/Under 39.0
Editor’s Prediction: Bengals 21, Broncos 20
While the Bengals have been 1-3 since their bye week (with a total victory margin of one point in their lone win), the Broncos have gone 0-5. They’ve scored a combined 68 points in those five games, only crossing 20 points once, and seem unlikely to do so against one of the best defenses they’ve yet faced. The Bengals – widely being picked against, as they were last week – have hardly enjoyed a strong offensive unit, but even the approach of living and dying with A.J. Green carries some upside. Brock Osweiler carries none.

Patriots Week 10 Injury Report
Despite rest during the bye week, the New England Patriots are still dealing with injuries.
The Patriots comeback Sunday night, after having time to rest on their bye but are still not completely healthy. Traveling to Denver, the Pats will play under the primetime lights for Sunday Night Football. Denver has had an up and down season, but their defense is still a force that head coach Bill Belichick can not overlook.
One of quarterback Tom Brady’s check down wide receivers, Chris Hogan did not practice this week with a shoulder injury. Hogan and Danny Amendola have been splitting time filling in for Julien Edelman who went out early in the season and has been on injured reserve.
Amendola who was injured earlier in the season as well, was limited this week in practice from a knee injury. Amendola should play during the match on Sunday.
Other players who did not practice: defensive lineman Malcom Brown (Ankle) and offensive lineman Marcus Cannon (Ankle).
Cornerback Stephon Gilmore was limited in practice with a concussion designation as well as a ankle injury. Cornerback Johnson Bademosi was a decent replacement during the Patriots last game, Gilmore is looking to make a comeback against Denver. Other players who were limited in practice: defensive end Cassius Marsh (Shoulder) and defensive back Eric Rowe (Groin).

While the Patriots have a few key players on the injury report this week, Denver’s list is considerably longer. Running back Jamaal Charles missed practice on Wednesday, listed as not injury related, he was a full participant in Thursday’s practice. Other running back in Denver’s committee, C.J. Anderson, is dealing with an ankle injury as well as illness. He was limited in practice on Wednesday, but did not practice on Thursday. Defensive end Derek Wolfe is dealing with a neck injury that held him out of practice on Thursday.
Players who were limited in practice on Thursday: wide receiver Bennie Fowler (Ankle), guard Ron Leary (Elbow), center Matt Paradis (Back), wide receiver Demaryius Thomas (Hamstring), linebacker Todd Davis (Ankle), tackle Donald Stephenson (Calf).
Players listed on the report who practiced in full on Thursday: nose tackle Domata Peko Sr. (NIR), wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (Ankle), safety Darian Stewart (Thigh), wide receiver Cody Latimer (Knee), linebacker Brandon Marshall (Shoulder), linebacker Shane Ray (Wrist).

Broncos: Week two report card
Under Center
For the second consecutive week, Trevor Siemian has looked the part of a franchise quarterback. That’s quite the jump seeing as 4 weeks ago Denver was a city divided by quarterback controversy. Siemian has the clear respect of his teammates. Aqib Talib told ESPN on Sunday that the second year starter can be a star in this league. Siemian is now the league leader in touchdown passes with six. Additionally, he is third in total QBR, a stat that measures a quarterback’s contribution to his team’s win probability by measuring both efficiency and “clutch factor.” Through two weeks, Siemian has shown growth in his pocket presence and assertiveness. With that said, we are only two weeks in. Let’s see how Siemian performs against the rest of the AFC west before Denver gives Siemian the key to the city. However, you can’t help but be impressed by the 25 year old. Week 2 Grade: A-Season Grade: B+
Running Back
For Denver, the passing game and running game go hand in hand. The balance between the two has been offensive coordinator Mike McCoy’s greatest success. Denver leads the league in total run plays through two weeks. The leader of the train, C.J. Anderson, looks like a fire has been lit following the signing of Jamaal Charles. Anderson had one of his best performances in a Broncos uniform Sunday, and is currently third in the league in evaded tackles per game with six. We’ve known that Anderson is capable of being the team’s bell-cow; the question has always been whether or not the fifth year runner can stay healthy. Jamaal Charles continues to show flashes of his famous burst of speed. The tandem leads the league in total rushing (159 yards per game) and is in the conversation for the league’s best duo though two weeks. Week 2 Grade: A- Season Grade: B+
Receiving Core
Denver paid up for the likes of Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders a few seasons ago. In a salary cap league, many question if wide receiver is a position worth the investment. So far, the receiving core as a whole has seen an improvement over a year ago. Both the receivers and tight ends have been efficient on shorter routes, particularly on third down. However, we are still waiting to see the offense open up with the big play over the top. With defenses narrowing in on Anderson, the deep passing game should be there for the taking in the coming weeks. Week 2 Grade: B Season Grade: B
Offensive Line
The Broncos were determined to get “nastier” up front. The move from a zone-blocking scheme to a more man-blocking scheme has helped tremendously and players have bought in. While pass protection still has its issues at times, run blocking on first and second down has helped Siemian stay out of third and long. Denver leads the NFL in rushes for first downs. Garett Bolles went down on Sunday and is week-to-week with a bone bruise in his left leg. The Broncos have more depth than they did a season ago, part of the reason why the team felt comfortable moving on from former second round pick Ty Sambrailo. Look for Denver to turn to Allen Barbre to fill in for Bolles. Barbre is noted as the more effective run blocker than the other reserves. The key remains keeping Siemian upright. Week 2 Grade: B Season Grade: C
Dominant D
A year ago the Denver defense was still among the league’s best, but something seemed to be missing. After Sunday one thing is clear – the Broncos defense has its edge back. A defense that will continue to strike fear in opposing offenses and send them home with their tail between their legs.

Defensive Line
Coming into Sunday, one of the biggest keys to beating the Cowboys was to match the physicality of their offensive line. “I think it’s an attitude to stop the run, it’s an attitude,” said defensive tackle Domata Peko. “You got to go out there and you got to draw a line in the sand and say, hey, I’m not going to be moved back and no one’s going to push me around. That’s the attitude we have.” The defensive line set the tone on Sunday and then some, holding Ezekiel Elliott to eight yards on nine carries. The best Denver free agent acquisition this offseason so far has been Peko. Peko was the rock for a solid Bengals defense for eleven seasons. It’s evident that Peko still has plenty left in the tank. Add in Derek Wolfe and the surprise advancement of Adam Gotsis, and opposing rushing attacks will have a difficult time exploiting this Denver front seven. Week 2 Grade: A Season Grade: B +
Linebackers
Von Miller was anxious to get his first sack on Sunday. So much so, that Miller jumped offside on multiple occasions. Miller finished with two sacks but fans will have to wait to see him dance. On the other end, Shaquil Barrett continues to show that he is more than just a back up. Barrett will continue to play a key role even when Shane Ray returns from a torn ligament (left wrist) in a little over a month. According to Pro Football Focus, Miller and Barrett rank one and two in pass rushing productivity from outside linebackers. Week 2 Grade: A Season Grade: A-
No Fly Zone
Denver has something the rest of the league doesn’t – three elite corners. That’s part of the reason why you won’t see other teams repeat what Denver did to Dallas on Sunday. Both Aqib Talib and Bradley Roby saw their fair share of Dez Bryant. Bryant was targeted 16 times, and came down with just seven receptions. Chris Harris Jr. spent time at safety while also shutting down Cole Beasley in the slot. Jason Witten caused problems over the middle but it was slim pickings for the Cowboys. There isn’t much else to say about the No Fly Zone, they bear the name for a reason. Week 2 Grade: A Season Grade: A
