Dogpatch USA was a theme park in Arkansas that operated from 1968 to 1993. It was based on 1930s comic strip Li'l Abner, created by cartoonist Al Capp and set in a fictional village called Dogpatch. Park attractions included paddle boats, a train, caverns, a grist mill, shops statues and various rides. Li'l Abner comic-strip characters would roam the park and perform skits for the patrons. Unfortunately financial concerns and competition from the nearby parks forced Dogpatch to close its doors.
Since closing, parts of the park have been divided up and sold, and the main area has been bought, sold, and foreclosed on several times. Also on the property is the former vacant Hub Motel, more recently known as the Marble Falls Resort. It last operated in 2017.
As of 2020, Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris purchased the abandoned property for $1.2 million and plans to restore it as a private nature preserve called Marble Falls Nature Park.

Dogpatch: Surek
I've linked over to Dante Carfagna and Jonathan Kirby's phenomenal Dogpatch podcast in the past — but I still feel like not enough people know about it. Consider this another reminder! Dogpatch isn't on a tight schedule; episodes show up when they show up. But each one is a wonder of rare grooves and informative/hilarious commentary.
The latest Dogpatch deep dive concerns the recently departed crate digger Greg Surek, whose massive collection was the stuff of legend. You get the sense that Carfagna is not an easily impressed dude, but his gobsmacked, virtually breathless descriptions of Surek's stuff demonstrate just how amazing it all is.
Beyond the entertaining inside baseball discussions here, the music Carfagna and Kirby share from the Surek haul is unreal — just check out the dreamlike "Color One Tear Black" two-parter by Double O's Demingo's. It'll make you believe in humanity again. At least for eight-and-a-half minutes, anyway.

Lost Attractions of the Ozarks – A fun read!
It’s a guided tour of the bygone and often amusingly naïve efforts to attract travelers and tourists of the Ozark hills of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Up front is a disclaimer, “Okay faithful readers, this is your final warning. If you have an aversion to traditional hillbilly stereotypes such as these, you are advised to turn around and go back right now, because things are only…

Dogpatch - See Them Seeing Me (Curtis Mayfield Special)
I've pointed you in the direction of the always dazzling Dogpatch podcast in the past — allow me to do so again! Dante Carfagna and Jon Kirby don't do a ton of episodes, but each one is phenomenal, digging into incredible musical zones, filled with insight and expertise. It's also hilarious, which is nice, too.
The latest Dogpatch takes a heavy look at the mighty Curtis Mayfield, and it's chock full of unbelievable rarities; the demos of "Hard Times" and "The Makings of You" (which I don't think have been released anywhere) are particularly astonishing. Dante and Jon make the argument for Curtis as a songwriter / producer / performer / guitarist / singer / personality on a level with any of the greats. And after listening to this hour of Curtis sounds, you might make that argument too.
