i’m not a fan of the possessive, self righteous i-know-the-show-better-you’re-a-fake-fan energy up in here i see sometimes. we’re all here because we adore this show. that is a beautiful thing!!!! we love something SO MUCH collectively that we have a little community to be crazy about it together. so why bring in all that gross dividing energy? sweeney todd is a piece of art and a very complicated one at that. we are allowed to interpret it a certain way and still respect different interpretations. let us have our messed up ships. let us have our stupid headcannons. let us have our favorite actors/actresses. no one’s changing the objective story or manipulating characters beyond recognition. we are watching and analyzing and learning new things about these characters and this story we all love so much. i understand the deep passion and appreciation for the original story and production of sweeney todd. i share that. i also love geeking out about sweenett and josh groban and annaleigh ashford. two things can be true at once. i think a lot of this division comes from differing feelings about the revival. first of all, can we be happy this incredible musical is THRIVING on broadway and getting thousands of new fans? so many people have been pulled into this delicious, dark rabbit hole only because of the revival, myself included. of course some things in the show were adjusted for modern audiences. mrs. lovett reads sexier and sweeney a bit softer because people like that shit (also modern audiences are dense and cannot pick up very subtle messages.) i believe the original production intended that dynamic between sweeney and lovett as well. stephen sondheim The Creator has indicated such himself. this one is just more upfront with it so audiences can understand explicitly and get the most out of the show. people love dark, sad romances and evil hot girls. and the show is doing AMAZING. you can have your harsh criticisms on the current production and actors. you can be boring and hold a hateful grudge against the revival. fine!! you’re missing out!!! but don’t make it the problem of people who love it and are having fun. please stop ostracizing people and giving yourself a medal for having a closed mind.

naelys stood at the threshold of rhaena’s chambers, hesitating for a moment before stepping inside. she had come to deliver one of her sister’s new necklaces, a delicate piece of silver and sapphire that gleamed faintly in the low light. the room was quiet, empty, save for the soft crackle of the fire in the hearth and the sound of the wind rattling the window pane. it felt strange to be here alone, surrounded by rhaena’s things—each item carefully curated, each corner of the room a reflection of her sister’s composed elegance.

placing the necklace gently on the dresser, naelys’s eyes were drawn to the collection of glass model dragon eggs resting on a nearby shelf. she approached them hesitantly, her fingers hovering above their smooth surfaces, feeling as though her fingertips were scalded for merely doing such a thing. as though these were not hers to touch, but it were more than that; she were as much glass as they were. they were beautiful, fragile things, their intricate swirls of colour catching the light in mesmerising patterns. she couldn’t resist the urge to touch them, to feel the cool glass beneath her fingertips.

her black nightgown whispered softly against the polished floor as she moved, the fabric clinging lightly to her frame. naelys felt the familiar stir of envy as she thought of rhaena, of the grace and poise her sister carried so effortlessly; the glimpse of portraits, the sparkling of seemingly everything around her; it made her swallow back her guilt. why did she feel so green suddenly? rhaena had once been a dragonrider, a living symbol of their family’s valyrian heritage; the majesty of it all, someone who could have helped when it were needed the most.

naelys, in contrast, felt small and ordinary, her anxieties and insecurities leaving her trapped in a cycle of self-doubt. and this room only heightened that feeling. as though each time she caught her reflection in some object, the walls closed in an inch more.

she picked up one of the eggs, turning it over in her hands. the glass was smooth and cool, a calming presence against her restless fingers. as she examined the delicate craftsmanship, she let her mind wander. what was it like to be rhaena? to walk into a room and command attention without a word? to carry the legacy of their family with such dignity and strength? naelys longed for that kind of confidence, yet it always seemed just out of reach; it would forever remain out of reach. lost in thought, her grip on the egg slackened.

before she realised what was happening, the fragile object slipped from her fingers, falling to the floor with a sickening crash. shards of coloured glass scattered across the room, catching the firelight in a dazzling, heartbreaking display.

naelys stared at the shattered remains, her heart pounding in her chest. she knelt down, gathering the pieces with trembling hands, whispering to herself in a voice barely audible. "oh no, no..." her mind raced, a flood of guilt and panic washing over her. they had been a gift, a gift from a ghost that caused her heart to twist at the thought of it. she knew how much rhaena cherished these trinkets, each one a part of her carefully curated world. what would she think? what would she say? as she gathered the shards, naelys felt the sting of tears welling up in her eyes. she wiped them away hastily, determined to fix what she could before rhaena returned.

but the damage was done, and no amount of careful rearranging could undo it. and so, when she heard the door open, she knew she had made a mistake. there was a slow turn from the position she remained in, attempting to collect small broken pieces of glass; and yet, it were clear as daybreak. the glass was fractured, and there was no collecting the smallest of pieces. "...i'm sorry." there was guilt and regret, feeling as though she had been caught once again trifling through her older sister's belongings.

Wyn

11. If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?

It would depend entirely on who was impersonating her, but a good starting metric is to ask her to paint something. If she defaults to a portrait or an animal, you can be almost 100% positive that it isn't Wyn. She's much more familiar with painting landscapes, and that will always be her first choice if given one. (Unless ☝ it's for a bit. Obviously.)

Alternatively, if you stick her in a room with the party wizard and she doesn't at LEAST smile after five minutes, that ain't Wyn! Something about Tobias's particular sense of humor gets her like absolutely nothing else, and has even managed to make her laugh while actively being threatened. It's something that works on exactly no one else, and it's a dead giveaway!

12. What’s something that makes them laugh every single time? Be specific!

Aside from the aforementioned 'anything the wizard says'? Flattery, ESPECIALLY in regards to her looks. Wyn has a nervous habit of laughing when she's embarrassed, and anyone paying her an earnest compliment is treated to a little laugh from behind her hand. She doesn't get flustered often, but that's one of the few things that will put her on her back foot.

As for a real, honest laugh, the only surefire way is to say the most batshit, out of pocket thing that you can think of with the straightest face possible. Something about that exact delivery gets her EVERY time.

Nellie

11. If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?

Currently there is exactly one person on the face of the planet who knows Nellie enough to spot the difference, but if you ask her to make coffee, she will make it exactly one single way: with precisely one and a half sugars and more cream than should legally be allowed in coffee. She's made it that way every day for the last forty years, and it's been a hell of a habit to try to break.

12. What’s something that makes them laugh every single time? Be specific!

Wordplay. Puns. Anything especially clever or especially stupid in those categories gets to Nellie like nothing else. She absolutely LOATHES that it's so funny to her because it ruins her stern and serious bodyguard persona, but unfortunately, she inherited her sense of humor from someone who had it even worse. That stupid joke about certain armor granting a bonus to stealth because it's literally "made of hide"? Instant snickering.
