Russia suspends cooperation with ISS until sanctions are suspended
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/03/2022 - 19:20 in Espaço
The Russian space agency Roscosmos announced that it is suspending cooperation related to the International Space Station (ISS).
This was done in response to the sanctions imposed on Russia by the international community that were triggered by the war waged by the Kremlin against Ukraine.
Dmitry Rogozin, head of the space agency, tweeted that the purpose of the sanctions is to "kill the Russian economy and plunge our people into despair and hunger, to bring our country to its knees". He added: "They will not succeed, but the intentions are clear."
About the extreme annoyance caused by rumors that @roscosmos will not return NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hay from the ISS to Earth, as well as about the answers received from the heads of space agencies partners in the project #МКС to our demand to lift sanctions
He added that he will present a schedule for the completion of current projects to the Kremlin.
Rogozin went on to say that the restoration of normal relations between ISS partners and other projects is only possible with the lifting of "illegal" sanctions. In general, the ISS itself involves the participation of five different space agencies, namely NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe) and CSA (Canada) with the Russian Orbital Segment (ROS) dealing with orientation and navigation for the entire station. Translation from below.
financial, economic and production activities of our high-tech enterprises. The purpose of the sanctions is to kill the Russian economy, plunge our people into despair and hunger, and bring our country to its knees. It is clear that they will not be able to do this, but the intentions are clear. That's why. Translation from below.
Most astronauts aboard the ISS currently return to Earth on board Russian Soyuz flights, but Elon Musk's SpaceX Crew Dragon also now transports the crew to the space station and has made four visits so far since its maiden voyage in 2020.
The current crew is composed of three Americans (Kayla Barron, Thomas Marshburn, Raja Chari), three Russians (Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveev, Sergey Korsakov) and one German (Matthias Maurer).
The ISS, a symbol of post-Cold War distension, is divided into two halves, with life support coming from the U.S. half, and propulsion, preventing it from falling to Earth, coming from the Russian side.
Rogozin said earlier that if Russia left support for the ISS it could fall on the US or Europe. The U.S. said it would be “very difficult” to operate the satellite on its own.
Last month, Roscosmos canceled a planned launch of satellites for OneWeb in retaliation for UK sanctions against Russia. The country is also increasingly isolated from digital and financial platforms as major payment processors leave the country and Google has paused payments from the app store.

Russia Says It Will Quit International Space Station By 2024 👍👍👍
Yuri Borisov, head of Roscosmos, says Moscow will fulfil obligations to ISS partners before quitting project
— Pjotr Sauer | Tuesday 26 July 2022

Russia will pull out of the International Space Station (ISS) after 2024 and focus on building its own orbiting outpost, the country’s space chief has said, in a move that will end a symbolic two-decade orbital partnership between Moscow and the west.
Yuri Borisov, the newly appointed head of the space agency Roscosmos, said during a meeting with Vladimir Putin that Russia would fulfil its obligations to its partners on the ISS before leaving the project.
“The decision to leave the station after 2024 has been made,” Borisov said, to which Putin responded: “Good.”
Borisov’s statement reaffirmed previous declarations made by the previous Roscosmos head, Dmitry Rogozin, about Moscow’s intention to leave the station after 2024. The outspoken Rogozin had threatened to end the partnership unless the US, EU and Canada lifted their sanctions against enterprises involved in the Russian space industry.
The first version of the ISS was launched in 1998, and astronauts from a range of western countries and Russia have continuously lived there since 2000, the longest constant human presence in low Earth orbit in history. The station was widely seen as a symbol of the post-cold war partnership between the two space superpowers, Russia and the US. Speaking in 2001 alongside the then US president, George W Bush, Putin lauded the ISS as an example of “very successful” bilateral ties between the two countries.
Soon after Borisov’s meeting with Putin, Roscosmos released an image on its social media channels of what it said was a blueprint for its own orbiting outpost. The blueprint said the space station would accommodate two Russian astronauts at first, eventually expanding to four.
A senior Nasa official told Reuters on Tuesday that Russia has not communicated its intent to withdraw from the ISS.

Despite widespread condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, space had remained one of the last avenues for cooperation between Moscow and the west.
Russian cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveev and Sergey Korsakov pose with a flag of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic at the International Space Station.
Nasa and Roscosmos made a deal this month for astronauts to continue riding Russian rockets and for Russian cosmonauts to catch lifts to the ISS with the private US rocket company SpaceX beginning in the autumn.
The agreement ensured the ISS would always have at least one American and one Russian onboard to keep both sides of the outpost running smoothly, Nasa and Russian officials said.
Still, Borisov’s latest announcement to leave the ISS will not come as a surprise given Moscow’s growing isolation. Russia’s space agency caused controversy this month when it released images of its cosmonauts onboard the ISS celebrating Moscow’s capture of the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk.

Meanwhile, in sanctioned Russia Drink fresh from a can: manufacturers of "long-lasting" dairy products and juices have problems with packaging Juice and milk producers announced an increase in packaging prices due to sanctions Producers of juices and milk threaten to disrupt supplies. The reason seems to be nonsense - there was a shortage of packaging. For long-term storage of milk and juices, the so-called tetrapack is used - this is a multi-layer packaging made of cardboard, polyethylene and foil. It is mostly imported or from imported components. Now supply chains from Europe have been disrupted for one reason or another, and problems have arisen. Product manufacturers have confirmed that the problem exists. - And it is not only with a tetrapack, but also, for example, with "glasses" for dairy products, which were made from European cardboard, - said the president of the Kabosh group of companies (agro-industrial holding) Dmitry Matveev . - The main problem is that the prices for packaging have increased significantly. Supply chains are disrupted, money cannot be transferred, there is a wave of excitement and, naturally, many packaging companies have revised prices. Russian Parlaiment has proposed pouring milk and juices into glass and plastic bottles. Or even in cans - as it was in Soviet times. After all, they lived somehow ... - Replacement for glass and plastic? I say right away, this is unrealistic, this requires completely different equipment, - says Dmitry Matveev . - You can’t replace tetrapack packaging at all - the business is built on the fact that you buy machines “from them” that work only on “their” cardboard. #ukraine #russia #usa #poland #europe #eu #india #sudamerica #africa #asia https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbb2fprgX7J/?utm_medium=tumblr

New Russian team of cosmonauts arrives at the International Space Station
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/18/22 - 6:58 PM in Space
Three Russian cosmonauts arrived safely at the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday, attaching their Soyuz capsule to the outpost for a mission that continues a shared mission of 20 years of the presence between Russia and the US in orbit despite tensions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The meeting took place about three hours and 10 minutes after the Soyuz spacecraft carrying the new team of cosmonauts took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Russia, Kazakhstan.
NASA 3502608
"Congratulations on the successful anchoring," said a voice from the control of the Russian mission moments later, according to an English translator speaking during a NASA live webcast about the event.
The connection of space vehicles, after the approach of Soyuz made two brief passages through the ISS, occurred when Soyuz and the space station flew about 400 km above eastern Kazakhstan, said a NASA commentator.
Soyuz commander Oleg Artemyev led the Soyuz team, accompanied by spaceflight rookies Denis Matveev and Sergey Korsakov on a scientific mission scheduled to last 6 and a half months.
According to NASA, the arrival of Soyuz on Friday marked the first time a spacecraft docked in the station's newly added Prichal module, a spherical unit launched to the ISS and connected to the Russian segment in November 2021.
NASA said it would take about two hours after anchoring for the crew to perform standard leak tests and pressurize the passage to the space station before the three cosmonauts could open the hatches to the ISS. They will join the current crew of seven station members to replace three who are scheduled to fly back to Earth on March 30 - cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anton Shkaplerov and American astronaut Mark Vande Hei.
Vande Hei will have recorded a NASA record of 355 days in orbit when he returns to Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz capsule with his two fellow cosmonauts.
Mark Vande Hei will return to Earth after 355 days in orbit.
Remaining on board the space station with the newcomers until the next rotation, a few months later, are three NASA astronauts - Tom Marshburn, Raja Chari and Kayla Barron - and German crewmate Matthias Maurer of the European Space Agency.
These four crew members arrived together in November aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida to start a six-month period in orbit.
Launched in 1998, the research platform has been continuously occupied since November 2000, while operated by a partnership led by the US and Russia, including Canada, Japan and 11 European countries.
COLLABORATION TESTED
The durability of the collaboration between the US and Russia in space is being tested by the increased antagonism between the two former Cold War opponents over the Russian invasion of Ukraine last month.
As part of U.S. economic sanctions against the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin last month, U.S. President Joe Biden ordered high-tech export restrictions against Moscow that, according to him, were designed to "degrade" the Russian aerospace industry, including its space program.
Dmitry Rogozin, director general of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, attacked in a series of Twitter posts suggesting that U.S. sanctions could "destroy" ISS teamwork and cause the space station out of orbit.
A week later, Rogozin announced that Russia would stop the supply or maintenance of Russian-made rocket engines used by two U.S. aerospace NASA suppliers, suggesting that U.S. astronauts could use "babsors" to enter orbit.
At about the same time, Russia said it ceased the joint research of the ISS with Germany and forced the cancellation of the launch of a British Baikonur satellite.
The head of Roscosmos also said last month that Russia was suspending its cooperation with European launch operations at the European Spaceport in French Guiana.
The space station was born in part of a foreign policy initiative to improve American-Russian relations after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the hostility of the Cold War that stimulated the original U.S.-Soviet space race.
Rogozin's recent actions have led some in the U.S. space industry to rethink the NASA-Roscosmos partnership.
NASA officials, for their part, said that the crew members of the ISS from the U.S. and Russia, although aware of the events on Earth, were still working together professionally and that geopolitical tensions had not infected the space station.
Addressing the 60,000 employees of his agency in a video "prefecture" on Monday, NASA boss Bill Nelson said: "NASA continues to work with all our international partners, including the State Space Corporation Roscosmos, for the ongoing safe operations" of the space station.
