Magic System; Basic/Synopsis

Magic is inherent in all natural objects; from a blade of grass, to a rock, to bird feathers, and even people. It's possible to harness that magic by breaking down the Component's physical state, converting the object into its raw potential; a process called Alchemy. The magical potential of an object can take multiple aspects depending on a multitude of factors; it is theoretically feasible, but only talented Alchemist can do this.

Alchemy is a difficult process, and also a destructive one; even healing spells, the optimime of heartfelt magic, requires the destruction of a Component. It is an artistic process; the destruction of a Component is a beautiful but melancholy sight. If one isn't careful when destroying a Component.

The top Alchemists are always finding new ways to harness Components. It's thought impossible to combine more than one Component into a spell; every mage fails when they try. The pursuit of knowledge and what can be harnessed from nature is what drives the creativity of an Alchemist.

When an Alchemist finds a new way to harness a Component, they gain the title of Alchementor; which wasn't the king's finest name. This is the pinnacle of what an alchemist can hope to achieve, and is given with only the highest regard. They gain prestige, and can often gain a position within the castle or the army.

There's a forbidden form of Alchemy, called Demonic Alchemy; that uses your, or another's, very body or soul as the Component. Demonic Alchemy is practiced by Warlocks; those who seek power over life and dignity. It is exceptionally powerful, but only used for death and destruction; not an art but a weapon. Most Demonic Alchemist are missing a hand or an arm or something; having used it as a Component for any number of reasons.

I've started work on a book please critique and follow me

Working title; Damsal (not) in Distress

Genre; High Fantasy, Semi-Comedic

The story's synopsis

The very basis is a reversal of the damsal in distress, lock the princess in a tower trope; but (hopefully) isn't one dimensional. It follows princess Andreā Bellāün the archetypal frail princess, who gets captured by a dragon and locked in a tower belonging to an ancient wizard.

She awaits her knight in shining armour, her royal protector and sworn groom; Xander Exïendur. But when he gets beaten by the dragon and runs away screaming; she's just not worth it, and hope she's tasty!

She studies the ancient tomes, and learns of magical secrets long forgotten; learning of the ancient civilization of the elves. As she studies magic; she learns how to harness materials for spell casting, even learning how to combine materials for new spells.

She befriends the dragon; learning that he's an ancient being raised by the previous owner of this tower, and not actually evil at heart. He saw the potential for a successor to his master, one who could advance the state of magic to a new age.

However, in the kingdom; Xander has lied and claimed the princess has been eaten by the dragon, in an attempt to not return and risk his hide. The king however is enraged, and goes to kill the dragon in revenge. Xander is forced to return, but makes excuses the entire time as to why he can't fight.

When he arrives, a vicious battle ensues; the princess tries to stop it, but her voice is lost in the chaos. The dragon would not fight with even half it's power, not wanting to kill Andrēa's people. But when he is near death, she breaks out using the magic she learned; before stopping the battle.

She then goes on to teach people ancient secrets and kinder morals; starting to equalize the society. The dragon is treated, and is Andrēa's royal pet; by choice. She goes on to be regarded as the most powerful sorceress, and the greatest queen in Bellāquill Kingdom.
