What ride system would be best for a dark ride that simulates going underwater? (boat, omnimover, suspended vehicle, kuka arm, etc) I feel like anything attached to the ground forces riders to look up at the ceiling which could break the illusion and doesn’t give the floating sensation. Anything hanging from the ceiling would break the illusion of the ceiling being the top of the ocean too because riders would see tracks on it. I’ve been thinking about this and can’t find a good option.
Kinda depends on what vibes you're going for, how realistic an effect you're after.
Cause like humans can't really go underwater, aside from like swimming. And I'm guessing you're not looking for a ride that literally puts people underwater...though idk could kinda be cool to do a like ski tow-rope situation but for snorkeling or something...
So you really only have two options...the ride vehicle needs to be something that contains people in a fully enclosed space more or less like a submarine or you choose to go with a more stylistic, theatrical underwater illusion.
So for the former...guests are inside some sort of fully contained contraption....you can either literally stick the contraption underwater, which is useful say if you want to have live fish or just the plain cool factor, like Disneyland's sub but I think one of the legolands also has a ride like this, that's basically Peter Pan but through an aquarium. Realistically though if you have no desire for live fish you don't really gain much from the actually underwater thing. Best underwater illusion I've ever seen is the hydrolators at The Living Seas. Which basically puts some water between two layers of glass in the ride vehicle windows. The 20k ride at Tokyo Disney Sea also does this. The ride vehicle is suspended Ala Peter Pan but the portholes look down and out so you don't really see up, and the underwater effect is created by the bubbles inside the window and lighting of the sets. This technique really could be applied to any ride system depending on what you're looking for. I do like the idea of adding a motion base to the equation for a more "moving through currents" type experience.
Now if you're not going the realistic route, that's where stuff becomes much more interesting. The best theatrical "water" effect I've ever seen in my opinion is the raindrop ripples in the Winnie the Pooh ride at WDW. it's just some rings of light that quickly light up in sequence over black but it's very effective at creating the illusion of a surface. Finding Nemo at Epcot does a similar thing, a little less effectively to mimic an ocean surface above you. I think that technique done really well with good lighting, maybe some fog, and the right amounts of black could be really effective for creating an "above the surface, going below the surface" type of moment. As in that famous animatic of the mermaid ride intended for DLP. But you're right actually achieving that moment would be difficult because of the ride track. You'd see it going down before you.
My solution to that particular problem would be to locate the track very low and a ride vehicle that's basically capable of being a genie lift. Perhaps a kuka arm would be able to work under the right circumstances. Given the right lighting conditions, the actual track could be many feet below the "surface" of the water, with the vehicle elevated up in the air. And since the surface is not actually a surface but an effect created by lighting devices suspended in midair, you'd basically avoid the problem.
Just one possible approach, there's many potential solutions to the problem. Would love to know what you'd do.

i didn't want to wait forever for my overly-parallel yt-dlp script but i also didn't want to download one at a time when the youtube api is rate-limited, so here we are patching my script w/ a prototype threads flag to set the number of concurrent yt-dlp instances to call and to split the input urls accordingly.
need some logic for intelligent handling of danglers, but that can be switched on if len(urls) % threads != 0 and just means we take (len(urls)/threads) + 1 until len(urls) < len(urls)/threads) and then dump the remainder into the last thread. i think ? i might need to check that produces the correct number of threads at the end.

the whole thing needs a major refactor anyway, and i need a better monitoring solution than calling watch on the abduco session list, and having ^C trigger killing all the sessions regardless of finished status. might instead call mprocs (whether or not i keep the abduco sessions) and monitor that way.
