This is Jay again, we're jamming to West African rhythms! This one is a variation on Kuku, with Jay playing a reduction of the other dunun parts in the ensemble and i'm just playing one djembe part with him. This gets Jay to move his limbs in a different manner, not the orthodox way of playing drum-set which in my books is important to connect with. Music Lab mostly teaches students rock & pop syllabuses and orthodox/contemporary styles. I find it important to open the student up to different musical situations and possibilities as much as possible even though we're only in a room with drums. Turning to drum cultures such as the West African drumming tradition as well as Cuban and Brazilian traditions from the Yoruba, bear a well of information. I like to turn to these rhythms and get the student to experience it together because the learning really only happens when you play with another person, which is hard to experience in 1-1 drum lessons. This is my version of drum circle experience with this kid.

Proficiently enough to say I play them:
Great Highland Bagpipes
Tin Whistle
Soprano Recorder (the one that we learned in 3rd grade. yes I still play mine)
It’s been a hot minute but with some work I could recover some of my skills (and like I took lessons on these so I could play them at one point):
B flat clarinet
Piano
Djembe
Self taught (at a pretty beginner level):
Drum Kit
Bass Guitar
Acoustic Guitar
I can make sounds that I’m not sure are music:
Violin
Harmonica (I can play Oh Susannah really really badly and that’s it)
Fife (actually almost music but I can’t get the 3rd Octave without blowing my ears out)
B flat trumpet (seriously I got 3 notes out of this one and I’m hesitant to count it but also I could play hot cross buns)
8 bar glockenspiel
2 string cardboard dulcimer
#not watt#Patroc posts#I feel like I’m missing a couple but I can’t remember them for the life of me

Living Hoodoo: “Walking the Dikenga”
I gotta tell y’all the story of how one time I was Uptown in New Orleans watching one of my favorite Mardis Gras Indian Chiefs perform in a club (I won’t say who cuz I try to stay low in the cut on here), and I had been hanging out with some serious hoodoo/root women earlier that day just shooting the shit and collecting stories as I usually do. (I’m a heavy journal writer and keep one on me in my bag all the time to jot down snatches of conversation, slang, elder wisdom etc). This one sister kept noticing that I was constantly swiping my hand on my right ear. I kept feeling like there was a mosquito buzzing around me. You know how it is, especially if you’ve been in the South, the Caribbean, or places with really zealous bloodsuckers. This woman looked at me and said, “Baby, you about to be touched.”
Fast forward to the club, I had been downing some good Hurricane drinks and talking shit to the bartender, and my Big Chief was doing his thing on stage and the fellas got to drumming and carrying on, and of course, when I am around good drumming/percussion my old West African dance lessons kick in (I grew up with a West African dance troupe that performed throughout our city back home) and I start playing around near the front of the stage in front of the drummers who are using their djembe’s and other drums. If you’ve ever done West African dance you know to follow the command of the lead drummer. You listen for that change in drum cue and the moves change with it.
Mind you, I’m buzzing a little to some watered-down drinks, a little tobacco high from smoking Dominican cigars outside earlier in front of the establishment, and the club is jumping. Black folk partying. Then...
I start to feel like this weight is pressing down on my head, and I also start to feel pressure in my ears like how it does when you go underwater real deep. My back started to get real low and I’m doing the really fast wide arm swings in traditional West African dance. It felt like I was literally carrying someone on my back, like a Loa came down and decided to ride my ass in the middle of a club. It literally felt like a flash of the Spirit trying to take over my limbs. Luckily for me, the lead drummer knew exactly what was happening and switched up the drum beats to help walk me back to myself. I am so happy he did, because there is no telling what could’ve happened to me if I gave in completely. Eventually, I felt a cool tingling in the middle of my forehead and I hobbled my ass outside to get some air and smoke another cigar.
So when I see folks getting happy in the church, or see film clips like this, I know that there are worlds within worlds all around us.
I also learned how to watch out for that buzzing near my ear...

Name: Laura.
Nickname: There’s not a lot you can do with Laura really.
Zodiac: Taurus.
Favourite music/bands: Mostly folk or folk rock these days. Some particular favourites at the moment are Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Jim Moray, Sam Kelly, and Emily Portman.
Favourite sports team: Don’t really have one. I vaguely follow the England cricket team but that’s about it.
Other blogs: Just this and the writing/rp blog at the moment. I’m thinking of setting up either an Animal Crossing blog or a Welsh history blog though (hey, I contain multitudes!).
Do you get asks: Haha, no, not very often.
How many blogs do you follow: 407 apparently, which is a lot more than I expected!
Tumblr crushes: I always enjoy reading posts from @teashoesandhair, @morgauseoforkney, @lloerwyn, @lettersfromthelighthouse and @bookhobbit.
Lucky number: 7.
What are you wearing right now: A stripey, short-sleeved jersey dress, navy leggings, and my favourite socks (which are purple with bees on!).
Dream vacation: Iceland or Norway. I’d love to see the Northern Lights or go on a fjord cruise. Christmas markets in Germany also look really fun (guess my favourite season).
Dream car: To be honest, I really couldn’t care less about cars. As long as it gets me from A to B reliably I’m good. Maybe one of those vintage hippie Volkswagen camper vans in a fun colour?
Favourite food: I’m a crappy cook but I love food and could talk about this all day! Just off the top of my head: lots of different kinds of curry, pad thai, sushi, ramen, the classic full English breakfast, and fish and chips. Cherry bakewell tarts, apple pie, or brownies and ice cream for something sweet, although they have to be gluten free versions these days. Oh, and ‘Swansea Fisherman’s Breakfast,’ which I had at this one B&B in Cardiganshire. It’s cockles, bacon, and laverbread, cooked in cream and served on toast with some chopped chives. Delicious!
Drink of choice: Tea! Always tea. I even have a tea tag on this blog. Specifically Earl Grey, spicy Chai or Lapsang Souchong. When I want something cold I tend to go for ginger beer, coke, or lemonade.
Instruments: I played the violin throughout school and had some acoustic guitar lessons as well but I’m pretty terrible at both because I never practised enough. I was also part of a djembe drumming group for a while, which was great fun.
Languages: English is my first language but I started learning Welsh as a kid and I’m sort of edging my way towards intermediate level there now. I also picked up a tiny bit of Latin at university. Other than that it’s just the few scraps of French I can remember from school. I’d love to get a grip on the basics of Icelandic or Old English one day but I always find it really difficult to try and teach myself things.
Celebrity crush: Dev Patel.
Random fact: I collect stuff with bees on.
Favourite ecosystem: It’s not something I’ve really thought about much but tundra/taiga and temperate rainforests are really neat.
Favourite cat: Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest cats. Or Scottish wildcats for a non-domestic kind.
Tagging: @troiings, @ellatholmes, @ambarwen and @allspiritandfireanddew but only if you want to. Feel free to ignore!

The Eℓyxion [dot] in Seoul DVD & Photobook; EXO asks & Chanyeol answers!
14 things that that 7 members who performed with Chanyeol during EXO PLANET #4 - The EℓyXiOn[dot] were curious about XIUMIN: How many instruments do you have at home? CHANYEOL: 8 electric guitars, 3 acoustic guitars, so 11 guitars in total. There are ones I’ve received as presents, and signature models from artists that I like. I have 5 pianos, but most of them are synthesisers and the sounds they make are all different. I also have a djembe and an electric drum. For composing music I have 3 MPCs, a multi effector, and a loop station among other things. I even have more than 10 guitar effectors. Now that I count it that’s a lot of stuff. XIUMIN: When are you going to write a song for EXO? CHANYEOL: If I had it my way it would be right away, but I don’t think I have the skills for that yet. I want to build up my skills a little more and when a really good song comes out I want to give it to EXO. I think I could be able to do that in 2019. SUHO: You like challenging yourself to doing new things such as bowling or scuba diving. Is there anything new you want to try out at the moment? CHANYEOL: I recently started golf, but I’ve stopped for now because I want to learn it properly. I want to tackle it again when I’ve got a bit more time. I took an interest in scuba diving so I obtained an open water license, and I’m getting ready for an advanced license next. I want to try tennis too SUHO: Why do you like Sehun so much? CHANYEOL: I like everyone in EXO, not just Sehun! Out of EXO there are some members that are good to talk with, and some members that are good to play with, I think Sehun fits both those categories. Sehun and I have similar schedules as well in terms of when we are and aren’t busy, so I think that’s why we hang out together a lot. BAEKHYUN: What’s the reason you’ve gotten back into instruments these days? CHANYEOL: When I got rid of my studio I left all my instruments at home for a while, so it became a habit to pick up my instruments and practice them. While I was practicing guitar I felt the emotions that I felt when I was in middle and high school. Almost like I was returning to the beginning? I’d also like to be constantly improving with the way I play an instrument BAEKHYUN: Why don’t you join games these days? Why?! CHANYEOL: I became obsessed with games for about a year and a half. I spent every day like a pro gamer, only playing games and exercising, so I barely met any people. As you know, when I become obsessed with something, there’s no end to it. I felt like excessive gaming wasn’t very good for my mental health, so I cut back, hahaha CHEN: You like handling instruments, but have you ever wanted to try other kinds of music? CHANYEOL: Like you said, Chen, I like handling instruments and I also enjoy band music. So when I compose I end up incorporating band sounds a lot. If I end up doing solo activities, I want to try a new type of indie band music that has never been heard before. CHEN: Do you have any plans to release hip hop music? I’m asking as a fan! CHANYEOL: I do like hip hop music, but I don’t think the strong rebellious mood of traditional hip hop suits me very much. Instead I want to try Jazz-hip-hop, which incorporates a hip hop beat to jazz music. Ever since I was young I’ve really liked the music of jazz-hip-hop masters such as Nujabes, or Jazzyfact, which Beenzino is a part of. D.O.: You handle a variety of instruments, which one takes the number one spot? I’m curious about which instrument you want to focus on! CHANYEOL: I’m the best at the drums, but the instrument I want to improve at the most is the piano. I want to become better at it because it’s the most crucial instrument when composing. So at the moment I’m looking for a teacher to get personal lessons. D.O.: Have you ever thought of considering my advice of ‘stop buying so many useless things! Cut back on your spending!’ CHANYEOL: D.O, you’re misunderstanding something about me. I don’t buy as many useless things as you think I do. As you know, I’m not the style to buy a lot of clothes or expendable goods. I only buy supplies needed for composing. I like to think that eventually they will become like my flesh and blood. My spending is all fuelled by my passion for music! Of course, I’ll take your advice into consideration. Before I would immediately buy any instrument I liked the look of, but now I think about it at least five times before buying. I’ll try and only buy the equipment I really need. KAI: What do you think you’ll be doing when you’re fifty? CHANYEOL: My dream is to be making music in a studio with a piano and a guitar. KAI: What’s a small dream you want to make a reality in the near future? Something small like ‘I want to collect all of a figurine set’. CHANYEOL: I want a song that I’ve made to come out to the world. If you think of it in a big way then it’s almost too big of a dream, but at the same time I think it’s a rather small dream. Because if you put your mind to it it’s not an impossible thing. SEHUN: When were you happiest while you were preparing for EXO PLANET #4 - The EℓyXiOn[dot]? CHANYEOL: It was really fun when we were practicing on stage with the dancers for EXO PLANET #4 - The EℓyXiOn[dot]. And when I was preparing for the solo stage ‘Nine Hands’, writing the lyrics was simultaneously the happiest and saddest time. Writing about everything we’ve been through as EXO from debut until now I had a lot of thoughts, and I got swept up in a lot of different emotions. SEHUN: It’s said that you hate the nickname ‘Yoda’, do you really hate it? CHANYEOL: Sehun, did you really have no questions to ask me? Hahaha. I don’t hate the nickname ‘Yoda’, and besides, barely anyone teases me with that name anymore. Translation by fyeah-chanyeol (Please take out with full credits)

Answer these 21 questions and tag people you want to get to know better
I was tagged by @radicalcupcakemassacre
Tnx!!!
Anyway here goes:
1. Nickname: I haven’t really got one? Childhood friends called me Evo, which is probably the only nickname I’ve ever had that I was comfortable with. In high school people using a proper abbreviation of my name became kinda synonymous with them wanting sth from me, so it’s kinda icky to hear people doing that nowadays. I’m struggling a bit with my name anyway and will probably want to legally change it in the future so...
2. Zodiac sign: capricorn or aquarius? If someone could tell me where the official border between those two is then pls it would solve a mystery I’ve been trying to figure out ever since I learned what zodiac signs were as a kid.
3. Height: 1.70m/5’7”
4. Last thing I googled: uuuuhm I checked whether ‘ballsy’ is spelled with one or two l’s bc I’m incompetent.
5. Fave musicians: Blind Guardian, Noah Kahan, The Score, grandson, Unlike Pluto
6. Song stuck in my head: Hold it down - Noah Kahan
7. If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or to the future? probably back to the past. I don’t like to think of the future and there are many questions I have about the past.
8. Do you get asks? Sadly no :(
9. Following: 271, not all of them active thank god or I’d go mad.
10. Would you rather be rich or famous? I mean the two are often connected... In all honesty though, I would like to say famous because my dream in life is to leave a mark on the world and be remembered, but when I think of how scared I am of my future and my financial situation in a few years time I probably have to say rich. Being rich would lift a lot of my anxiety about life and might help me get to grips with the underlying reason for that anxiety.
11. Amount of sleep? 6 hours a night on good days, less on bad ones.
12. Lucky numbers: 3, 5, 8, 13, 66, 73. I like 3’s they’re very special and beautiful to me for some reason. The other numbers are connected to things in my life. (Some of them really silly: 73 was the number of the bus I used to take to the mall with my mom when I was little.)
13. What are you wearing? Comfortable weekend clothes: a pair of really old dark-greyish jogging pants, a light-grey T-shirt, my glasses. Not wearing shoes bc I haven’t been out of the house all day.
14. Dream job: Author or politician?
15. Dream trip: New Zealand?
16. If I were an animal I’d be: a hawk? I’m very alert and attentive to detail, I like to look at things from a higher perspective so I can see the bigger picture, I’m an introvert, I love the thrill of speed (though I don’t get it a lot xD) and I find my freedom and privacy some of the most important things in life.
17. Fave food: roti
18. Fave books/films/shows/games: anything related to Tolkien, whether book or movie or game. Also: V for vendetta, Lucifer, Sherlock (here meaning the bbc series, but I love the granada show too and of course the original stories are high up on my list of favourites to read), Star Trek.
19. Do you play any instruments? Not really no. I can play a tiny bit of piano and I know some chords on the ukulele, I love playing the djembe occasionally bc I find it such a beautiful powerful instrument. I’ve been told I could be good at the piano or drums if I took lessons, but I’ve always been afraid of taking lessons bc I feel like being forced to practice would make me not like it anymore. I’m more of a constant casual interest vs short-lived obsession kinda person (though there are exceptions to that rule in the form of eternal obsessions such as Tolkien).
20. Languages? Dutch and English fluently. I’ve studied French and German in high school for 3 years and Chinese for 4, so I know a bit of those languages but my knowledge has really declined after a (couple) year(s) of not using them. I’m a classics student so I can read some Latin and Greek (but I feel like I’m so bad it hardly counts xD)
21. Describe yourself as aesthetic things: morning dew on the autumn leaves of a forest, a steaming cup of mint and apple tea on the patio of a log-cabin, a cold gust of wind on a high mountain top caressing the stones, the faded letters of an ancient manuscript telling the story of a long-forgotten hero, and the flickering light and warmth of flames in the hearth as the wind howls outside.

When you get this, please respond with five things that make you happy~! Then, send to the last ten people in your notifications. You never know who might benefit from spreading positivity~! ❤❤❤
GDI, Juri. I had been working on one of these when you sent this and didn’t see it till after! And one round was hard enough while intoxicated!
1. Trevor Noah
I used this more for the lower part of the gif, because the man has the right idea, given the day’s political developments in the US.
Anyway, I adore Noah. He’s hilarious, the outsider’s inside viewpoint is pretty powerful, and while I did love the Stewart era of this show, I love what Trevor has done with it since becoming its host.
Side mention to Dulce Slone of this show. She’s amazing, and I swear to god half her commentary to Noah isn’t scripted and done just to throw him off his game.
2. The SCA
While I don’t attend a lot of the regular, local events - because the shire I’m in is ridiculous in shape, and the meetings are over an hour away - I do still interact online, try to make my house’s gatherings, and always attend Pennsic.
Most of the people I’ve met in the SCA have been incredibly intelligent, thirst for knowledge, and are also amazingly talented. It’s probably the only group where there can be about 10k - 50k people in one place without giving me massive social anxiety (Pennsic gets between 10k - 30k people at a time during the regular years, and round years get up to 50k people on site).
3. Dance
I started dance lessons when I was 3, beginning with ballet. I was in ballet till I was 16 and on pointe, when I had to give it up due to the costs involved with maintaining toe shoes (they get replaced around twice a year or so). I picked up Character (a musical theatre specific style) not long after, Jazz when I was still in elementary school, Modern around the same time, Ballroom and Belly Dance at the start of high school, Swing Dancing (trial by fire’d that one) near the end of high school. I also briefly did Ice Dancing, but that too had a huge cost of upkeep.
A lot of those don’t work with the joint problems I have now, aside from Belly Dance. I’ve learned both Turkish and Tribal Fusion, and I tend to fuse the other styles of dance I know into it. I personally dig a lot of the Tribal Fusion outfits over the cabaret styles that are associated with the form. Actual Arabic and Indian outfits are by far better than either, but you don’t see a lot of those outside the Middle East/India and the SCA.
3. Arabic Music
I got into playing Arabic music (Turkish-based music and instruments at first) when I was about 15, and my best friend during high school picked up playing different types of darbuka, djembe, and tabla (drums, folks). He got me into playing the riq (the first image for this site) and the sajat (commonly called zils or zills). He picked up being able to play the ney (fuck that instrument, srsly) as well, and I looked into playing qanun, but I never had the money for one.
Unlike all the other music I’ve played (I started into music at 3 as well), this style is incredibly relaxing to me. It can also get challenging because some beat patterns are complicated (I’m looking at you, tsifteteli [chiftetelli]), so it’s a broad spectrum to play with.
4. Writing
As much as sometimes the pain fog and/or lack of sleep makes it difficult to write, it’s something I really enjoy. I’d love to be able to get paid for it, but I specialise in creative writing, which doesn’t have the same level of freelance work that non-fiction and copywriting does.
5. A good night’s sleep
I don’t get a really good night’s sleep all that often, due to medical issues (and maybe due to needing a new mattress), but I feel so much better when I do - likely because of how infrequent it is. I tend to sleep better next to someone than I do alone, and that’s been some weird thing I’ve always had; when I was a kid/teen, I would break out of my house and into friends’ houses to curl up and sleep with them, so it’s basically been a life long issue.
Thank you (and curse you) for the ask, @jurien-ashur!

How music therapy, especially piano lessons, can help stroke survivors recover
How music therapy, especially piano lessons, can help stroke survivors recover
As the audience applauded in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Florida, they were unaware that all five on stage were stroke survivors. Yet they don’t skip a beat on their cabasa, drum and djembe. What the audience didn’t know was that the performance was part of a music therapy session, with music proven to activate different centers of the brain. As…

set task 3: planning
planning: the technical and vocational preparation for your projects as discussed in class or outlined within your (001) presentations (e.g., audience, marketing, tech, booking, contracts, promotions, tie ins, meetings, communications, gannt, swot, staff)
in order to create the podcast, we needed to record using three microphones at the same time. luckily our university has a podcasting room, used with the radio and journalism students, which is perfect for the project. however, none of my group had been inducted into the podcasting room so i asked andrew if he could get into contact with the media school to see if we could be inducted into the room
however, there was some issue with tone radio and rose’s process to join them, so i asked my house mate jordan if he could help us and book the room for us. he happily agreed and helped us set up the room, show us how to use the software and helped us record each episode! we ended up having 2 hours to record the episodes and we wanted to record them all in one session
to prepare for the recording, we had to come up with a little structure guide to help each episode flow. we decided each episode should be focussed on one person’s sector and they lead the topic of conversation for the episode. the plan was for each person’s episode to start with a brief summary of how they got involved with music, what has inspired them, why they are interested in their sector and what are their next steps to journey off into that sector. then each episode will end with a question and answer session. this plan will make it easier for us to record and hopefully make the session flow easier
in order for me to plan my own episode, i decided to make a script so it would be easier for me to remember all the points i want to say:
script:
hiya i’m anya and i specialise in playing percussion and vocals. i first got into music when i was 3 as my older sister played the violin. i used to stand outside the children’s choir room while waiting for my sister to finish her violin lessons at our local music school. i used to sing all the songs outside so one day i was invited into the choir early and i have been singing ever since. i got into percussion at the age of 6 as my cousin was throwing out his old drum kit. so, we decided to take it and i started drumming lessons, but i was rubbish, so i took up percussion instead and fell in love with it. from there i joined several wind bands and performed with the county band. i picked up the tuba in year 3 and played until year 10 when i decided to stop to pursue percussion and singing instead. i have completed grade 5 theory when i was 10 so i struggle with theory now as it’s my 10-year-old self’s brains way of remembering theory! i’ve also completed gcses and a-level music. i also joined a performance arts school at the age of 8 and since have performed in countless of pantomimes and even at theatre royal in london and o2 indigo. i have worked within a performing arts school since 2018 and have fell in love with teaching children. i probably got this from my mother, she is a teacher of the deaf and i used to go to her school and do inset days with her after completing work experience with my mum, i met a woman called phoebe, who is a deaf music teacher.
what i want to talk about: primary school and how i only revised during school using songs only memories at school were with music: djembe drumming, school productions etc working with children and seeing their faces light up with confidence that they’ve completed things music school and how it’s helped me- wind days and performances
we also wanted to come up with a podcast name, logo and jingle to make the podcast sound more professional. coming up with a name was the hardest part. we all went away to think of some ideas (for example, the treble clefs, re-musable, out of tune) but settled on the idea of “the musiverse”. i like this name as it shows how wide the music industry is and how we are exploring the music world. after coming up with the name, i went onto the app canva and made a logo! i wanted to incorporate music into the idea of space, and i was really happy with what i created. josh also went away and created a jingle for us to play at the beginning of our episodes!

My latest blog post from the cosy dragon: Interview with Lillian Brummet
An Interview with Lillian and Dave Brummet, authors of One Small Garden
Lillian and her husband Dave are the team behind Brummet Media Group, high-fiving cheerfully as they pass each other on the way from checking off one item or other from their long to-do list. After moving to their dream location (in the Kootenay Region of BC, Canada), they have been methodically converting the abused lot over to the little park it has become – and in doing so have gained certification with bee, pollinator and wildlife organizations. Their home, too, has become energy efficient via the many upgrades they have done. Their business includes Dave’s music studio and percussion accessory products and graphic design work as well as numerous award-winning non-fiction books and popular blogs. Today we help them celebrate their latest book release – From One Small Garden, with over 300 delicious, nutritious recipes!
How many books or short stories have you written?
L: I’ve only written a couple non-fiction short stories, numerous non-fiction articles, bn oth product and book reviews, and a total of 7 published books, if you count an e-book (Jump Start For Writers) that no longer exists. Currently we have a 2-book series on green living (Trash Talk), 2 books of poetry (Towards Understanding; Rhythm & Rhyme) and there’s marketing advice for writers (Purple Snowflake Marketing). Our most recent release is a cookbook: From One Small Garden that, as you might derive from the name, focuses on recipes that help people take advantage of garden harvests and reduce food waste.
Where did you find all the sources for your research?
D: I do most of my learning online, for instance when it comes to understanding a new program for vector graphics I will comb YouTube for tutorial videos. Somewhere online there is a video explaining everything you need – and more usually. I would never have attempted repairs to household appliances or automobiles if I didn’t have access to tutorial videos. Learning how to do things yourself can save you a bunch of money as an entrepreneur too. However it also means that you have to be able to learn, have the patience and then actually apply that new skill. Not as easy as it sounds, believe me.
What do you do when you are not writing?
D: I play drums in a rock band when ever possible. I also teach both drum kit and hand drum lessons. I have an active repair shop in which I build, fix and tune djembe drums (among others) and manufacture a few percussion accessories as well. I enjoy doing the graphic design work for all our marketing and that is a never-ending learning journey in itself, but certainly an enjoyable one.
Who, or what, inspired you to pursue a career in writing?
L: The first writer I ever knew was my mother, who dabbled at the craft for a short time. Later, teachers would comment about my writing, truly moved by what I wrote. These were the earliest influences, slowly pointing me in this direction. Some of my poetry was published, then I won some writing awards… later I took some career evaluation tests and writing kept coming up as a career option. Dave’s emotional support and strategic skills have been of great value; having that strength, someone to mull over challenges with, split the work with, and just share the experience in general.
What have you learned about while working with your spouse?
We do some of our best creative work when we are just discussing stuff together over a cup of coffee during a break. And, we always have a note pad to jot down the ideas that come bursting out because, sure enough, the best ideas are the ones that slip your memory if you don’t.
Describe a typical writing day.
L: There is no real typical day for us; 2-3 days per month are dedicated to managing the blogs, about 16 hours are spent networking, advertising, sending out queries to media and following up on marketing opportunities every week, a few hours per week are spent managing social media. Any one day can also involve cleaning the office, workshop, studio… assisting Dave where I can. However, I’ll share an example of a ‘behind the scenes’ look at one day: upon waking, we have breakfast and coffee and deal with the fur kids, get some house duties done, check emails/messenger/text messages for any important communications, and after a brief discussion about what each other’s goals are for that day, split off in our different directions. I’m in the office responding to interview questions while Dave is in his office working on images and ad creations for our cookbook (From One Small Garden). After this interview, I plan to complete a few touchups to some articles we wrote last week. We always take a break to make lunch and clean up after. Depending on what Dave might need from me, I may take on the task of going through the emails etc. one more time, responding and dealing with what I can… or I might start some seeds for the garden and do some laundry. Perhaps I’ll be dealing with garden harvests or taking an online course during the afternoon hours.
How do you manage social media, what social media have you used, which do you like to use the most and why?
D: I personally use Facebook for networking with specific groups and for general announcements, YouTube for posting video content and blogging for building a presence and sharing information with followers. Lillian is the one that handles the blogs and a majority of the social media and I am happy for that as she is very good at it and knows the ins and outs. She has a lot of relevant connections already from over 20 years experience of promoting our business and books.
How do you go about choosing a book title?
D: For me the title almost always comes near or at the end of the writing process. If ever I have had an idea of the title first it was usually changed by the time the book was done. A title for me has to explain the book’s purpose or intent in some way. I like it to be catchy and not too wordy. Like a good melody that you can easily whistle, a good title should be memorable, appropriate and roll off the tongue easily.
What is your contribution to society?
D: As a drum teacher I hope to help the next generation of drummers by passing on the knowledge of drums and percussion I have accumulated in my career. I run a program called Drum it Forward that I was inspired to create years ago. I go to the schools and offer my services as a drum doctor armed with all the spare parts I have amassed along the way and fix their gear. The schools don’t have the budget to pay for this and the poor teachers don’t necessarily have the time or knowledge, so I do it as a donation. All I ask is that if they have any spare parts or pieces laying around that they consider donating it to the cause to perpetuate the program.
Tell us the process of creating the cover for your book.
D: From One Small Garden’s cover was a process that evolved over the years. By the time the final title was decided on the concept of what we wanted to portray was clear – How to cook with fresh produce. If you look at the front cover closely, in the background is an image of our actual garden ghosted out with dishes of prepared food in the foreground – from the garden to plate in a sense. The back cover concept is similar but with images of our freshly harvested produce in place of the food dishes. All from one small garden – is what we have lived for the past 30+ years as a life style and a health choice and we know it saves a bunch of money while having you eat like royalty.

Learning something new for the first time
Today I had my first drum lesson. We started with the djembe. Mine doesn’t sound very good, the teacher noted. But his was beautiful, pristine.
However, at the stage I am at this point, I am only able to concentrate on my fingers and try to perform uniform movements.
Muscle memory, is what I am going for. Currently.
I felt the excitement of a child, trying to do something that I really suck at. The feeling of having no idea. Very much out of my comfort zone.
I wonder this plain silly excitement will last. But in any case, it is nice to register this feeling of innocence that I feel today.
On a side note, the cool thing of learning as an adult (perhaps to balance out our preconceived ideas) is that I can ask questions that can help me to learn better. I mean, better than I remember myself as a child. For example, I was able to ask exact questions about the finger positions and the arm movement.
Maybe the idea of agency on my learning is what makes it different now than how I felt as a child. I think.
