Worse things happen at sea: Art in the Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony
So everyone has been sounding off about the Paris' Olympic Opening Ceremony. Mainly about the supposed 'insult to Christians everywhere' with the recreation of Di Vinci's 'The Last Supper'.
(I'd like to go on the record that 1. you pose any group of folk in a line facing the viewer with a barrier at hip height and it's gonna look a little 'The Last Supper'-y, 2. clearly the hand wringers had forgotten that the artist was Di Vinci. The man would be pointing and laughing at them and be living it up on that bridge between Nicky Doll and DJ Butch, and 3. Da Vinci painted enough portraits of Bacchus, he would have known what's up.)
Anyway, a lot of art was incorporated and celebrated but there's one piece that did featured that had me performing a mental emergency stop and NO ONE ELSE is talking about it so I need to know I wasn't the only one to spot this.
So, opening ceremony, we're following our mysterious torch bearer as they race through the the Louvre to the strains of 'Danse macabre', (French composer Camille Saint-Saëns). The eyes of the paintings occupants follow their progress until we see frames with empty back drops, the paintings' subjects having come alive to watch the festivities from the windows. But the last empty frame... my people...
Our mystery guide stands in front of this for nearly 3 seconds, at the 1hr 42min 11sec mark in the BBC coverage. Now, I can't make out the plaque at the bottom of the frame, but I am prepared to place good money that this is Théodore Géricault's 'Le Radeau de la Méduse', or 'The Raft of the Medusa'.
Completed in 1819, this piece is considered the best work of its' French artist and an icon of the French Romanticism movement. It's chuffing huge, over 16ft by 23ft, and it is stunning.
It also depicts one of the worst events in French maritime history.
In June of 1816, the French frigate The Medusa left France for Senegal on the west coast of Africa. At her helm was a captain who had not sailed in 20 odd years and got the post through connections and political clout. And he fucked it up royally. The Medusa drifted 100 miles off course and ran aground off Mauritania. After 3 days of failing to shift the boat, the 400 or so people aboard has choices to make. They were 30 miles from land and there were 6 boats, room for 250 people. Some stayed aboard the stranded vessel but at least 146 men and one woman boarded a jerry-rigged raft. The plan was for it to be towed by some of the boats, but after only a few miles it was turned loose.
For 13 days, exposure, mutiny, disease, dehydration and starvation ravaged the survivors, whittling nearly 150 down to 15. It was in my fact checking for this that I learnt the lovely little term ‘a custom of the sea’. In layman’s terms, cannibalising your crew mates to survive. They were spotted by chance, no search effort had been made by the French. A further 5 died in the days following rescue. British naval officers helped the survivors to return to France because aid from the French government didn’t appear and the captain, who had made it to land fine, was more interested in recovering the gold on board the Medusa. He was court marshalled and should have been executed, but in the end served 3 years in prison. He was the inciting incident for a law to passed that ensured that promotions in the French military would thereafter be based on merit.
Now all this came hurtling into my head because I remember reading a book called 'Severed' by Frances Larson, all about the cultural and historical fascination with decapitation. There's a section in the chapter of severed heads in art about how Géricault went hard on the research for this painting; visited morgues and hospitals, brought home specimens to watch decay rate, y'know, stuff that absolutely wouldn't blow your safety deposit. But yeah, I'm there with dawning horror and ice in my blood as we look at a very French painting, of a French maritime tragedy, brought about by the hubris and arrogance and incompetence of the higher ups who had no right being there, where comrades and crew turn on each other in a horrific fight for survival, with the spooky dancing bones classical piece playing in the background...
And not 20 seconds later we are rejoining the action of the flotilla on the Seine, 'Fraternité' writ large over the boat with Cyprus, Columbia and Comoros waving excitedly and soggily at us.
Thomas Jolly, opening ceremony artistic director, I need to buy you a drink and we need to chat. I need to study you. I have been turning this over in my brain for a week, what are you trying to say?! Was I the only one to hear it?!
#i'm going insane here#i have absolutely no schooling in art history just some really macabre historical knowledge#paris 2024#olympics#paris olympics#art history#maritime history

Creating Musical Memories with DJ Hire in Gold Coast
It can be challenging to choose DJ hire in Goldcoast for your celebration or event. With so many options, organizing a fun and effective event involves giving a lot of factors considerable thought. First, ascertain the type of event you are planning. Is it a birthday celebration, a corporate function, or a wedding? Various events require distinctive DJ sets with a broad variety of musical styles. Consider the DJ's experience and reputation next. Look for DJs with a track record of success in the industry and who have performed at events similar to yours. By listening to their mixes and watching their live performances, you may get a sense of their sound and expertise. One way to assess a company's professionalism and dependability is to look through reviews and get referrals from happy clients. Finally, discuss the DJ's technical requirements and the equipment they'll need to set the perfect mood for your party with them. These tips will help you hire a DJ who will turn the party up a notch and have everyone dancing.
Recognizing the prerequisites for your position
It's important to know exactly what you need while organizing your DJ event. This will guarantee that the DJ and other suppliers are aware of your precise preferences. You should first ascertain whether the occasion is a birthday party, a wedding reception, or a corporate gathering. Take into account the size of the venue and the number of guests when determining what kind of lighting and sound equipment is required. Additionally, consider the mood and musical genres you enjoy listening to. Which would you rather have: a wild dance party or a calm get-together? If you provide a DJ with as much information as possible, they can adjust their mix to your preferences. If you're not sure whether the DJ's style will suit your tastes, ask for references or a sample of their work. If you know exactly what you want out of a DJ event, you can make it something to remember.
Future studies pertaining to DJs
There are certain important considerations to make when choosing a DJ for your event. First, think about your financial status and how much you can afford to spend on amusement. This will make it possible for you to quickly and easily screen out DJs whose services are too expensive for you. Second, in order to learn more about any DJ you are thinking about employing, do some research on them. Analyze their online persona, including social media profiles and recommendations or reviews. This will help you gauge their level of expertise, professionalism, and friendliness. You can ask people you know and trust for recommendations in addition to conducting an online search. Make a list of DJs that suit your requirements after doing some research. Finally, get in touch with each DJ on your list to inquire about their availability and rates. Armed with this knowledge, you can confidently choose the Perfect DJ for your event.
DJ Evaluation: Ability and Background
A DJ's professionalism and talent can be assessed based on a number of factors. Evaluating the DJ's technical skills ought to come first. This include assessing their general understanding of music theory, beatmatching skills, and mixing aptitude. A proficient DJ can smoothly switch between tracks without disrupting the tempo of their performance. Another crucial component of evaluation is your professional demeanor. It is imperative to oversee the DJ's readiness, awareness to the audience, and adaptability in catering to their requirements. An effective communication style with other artists and event coordinators is essential for a DJ. Their tools also need to be current and in good working order. A DJ's technical skill, adaptability, audience interaction skills, and general preparation are all crucial factors to take into account when evaluating their professionalism.
Verifying the chemical and compatibility
It's crucial to take into account the DJ's demeanor and style of communication to make sure they'll support you in reaching your event objectives. The character of the DJ has a big impact on the celebration's energy and mood. Someone who can interact with your guests and create a fun atmosphere is what you need. It's also very important to take people's communication styles into account. A excellent DJ Hire in Sydney is one who pays attention to your requirements and sets the right music for the occasion. They must meet the expectations of the crowd and adapt to ensure that everyone has a nice time. You may choose a DJ who understands your style and shares your interest in music if you take the time to consider these aspects.

GABI GARBUTT - A PORTRAIT
"....the inferno of your spirit sparks in deadly release, our souls fly up like lanterns and they crash down at our feet...."
To those of us who frequented the music pubs of Camden, certain venues out East and the London poetry den Y Tuesday, such lyrical flights by Gabi Garbutt are not unusual, as she is no stranger to our stages. We've seen her charming pixie-punk form flitting before us like the secret love sprite of William Blake and Patti Smith, with songs sung in her own unique English accent shaped from living in London, Gloucester and London once again. To many of us, this just what music needed, an authentic songsmith who's words really take you somewhere.
One always sensed she looked set for a major breakthrough to the big time but never quite got the breaks. Undeterred, she honed her craft wrote what needed to be written and was never afraid to jump up on any platform and try out a new song. There was a false start at the next level for her previous band The Sticklers, who's show in Manchester supporting the Libertines fell through at the last minute when Pete Doherty had a prolonged panic attack the night before in Camden. The van was unloaded with glassy eyed disappointment and the gig never rescheduled, the promise of something in the future with the Libs then seemed a far off horizon and a breakthrough elusive. Events that night seemed to take the wind from the sail of her band of the day, and they soon dissolved but it seems Gabi never stays down for long.
Although blessed with a huge lust for life, It's clear from her lyrics that this girl is no stranger to the world of those haunted by the "black dog" and songs such as 'Somebody like you' give vivid description to such episodes " Riding my bike to the heart of the night, hard to believe I nearly gave up on life, the doing or dying not the moping and crying, endless conversations between the floored and the flying " Gabi, daughter of a Chilean refugee is made of strong stuff though and disappointments were put aside as she relocated to a co-op on Golborne road out West, and looked for a new, fresh direction for her exceptional songs, Helped by her partner Dan Fatel and the multi instrumentalist Sean Read who has worked with such diverse figures as Dexy's midnight runners, the Manic street preachers and the Pretenders to name but a few. A new sound and more flexible band was hatched, Gabi Garbutt and the Illuminations entered the world.
The poetic verse we've come to expect from Gabi remained much the same but the songs now came with punchy, catchy choruses that anchor the songs to everyday life and championing the redemptive power of love. The slick rhythm section tends to include Stephen Gilchrist who some may recognise from Graham Coxton's band among others but this line-up is fluid, with Callum McQuattie on the album but Dan Fatel taking up the bass on a recent tour of England with legend Edwyn Collins, who alerted to Gabi's talent by Sean Read not only invited her on tour but offered access to his Highland studio for her to complete her debut album. Alec Sala from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas completed the brass section and Dexters Jimi Scandal ever present on lead guitar with his his inimitable style and catchy guitar lines mixed with ambient mastery and with Gabi of course, on rhythm.
Now adorned in glittering gold eye make up and eastern exotic tops, Gabi sparkles in the lights like the elements in the songscapes, where symbols splash into lyrics “..the sky broke up the coast line in flashes of light, it's all burning and waving..." while the Brass section glows in the volatile, nocturnal forays where nature itself seems agitated into excitement by Gabi's passing, with lyrics veering like a modern, urban John Clare or John Dee - for poetry is ever present in these songs. The rivers and oceans seeming to represent both sunken sorrows and sanctity.
Gabi's journey takes us on wild bike rides to Autumnal places where there's "...a lake all draped in flames, with Angels bursting from the bronze and calling out our names..." on to abandoned carousels, swooping on the wings of love for some slower, tender moments in 'Bright Tiger eyes' where the singer slings the guitar over her back to sing the lyric or in 'Tales from the undergrowth' with it's almost Velvet Underground simplicity of sound. Birds form a important part of the band's fully formed mythology, with Robins, Ravens and Pigeons, her "urchins of the sky" seemingly the winged avatars of a sense of hope and freedom ever present in these songs.
There is a fascination too with Barcelona and the style and duende of Southern Spain, with songs such as Lady Matador bringing it all home to Soho and a new one "Lady of Seville" penned with Libertine John Hassall for future release. This is not all exoticism though, far from it as so many songs buck the trendy to celebrate the mavericks, the down trodden and those about the streets of London who dare to be different in a world intent on harnessing all to the dreams of the few.
The Libertines honored their promise with a support slot on their seaside tour, which impressed the men of Albion sufficiently to invite the band on part of their European tour, supporting in the legendary Paris Olympia, with her name up in bright neon where the names of Piaf and Brel had once hung, and then on to Germany where Cologne, Munich and Berlin were introduced to her Illuminations. There may be some kind of collaboration with Pete Doherty in the pipeline too, loose plans were hatched in Berlin.
Irrepressible, Gabi's still up for the acoustic gig from time to time too, playing a different set in Dublin, Belfast and London recently. Among those songs you'll find "Never Never" a song inspired by both Vincent Van Gogh and Robert Quinne, the fractured guitar player of the Voidoids and also a unique paeon to childhood hero, puppeteer Jim Henson of Fraggle rock, Muppet and Labyrinth fame. As I write, the Illuminations are renting the airwaves on my radio, with the latest single "Heat of the machine" filling the room. The debut album "The discredited language of Angels" is now out in most formats and now I come to think about it, I really can't think of a better one this year. As one BBC6 DJ said the other day "this will be amongst the best new tunes you hear all day, all week and possibly even ever".
Steev Burgess ( lyricist with John Hassall and the April Rainers)

Gold Coast Pride Festival getting bigger every year
Gold Coast Pride Festival co-director Danni Zuvela said the festival, which started in 2021, is growing in size every year.
Danni and co-director Vince Siciliani said the the festival out over an entire weekend to accommodate everyone.
“We’re expanding our presence on the Gold Coast to meet the needs of our ever-growing LGBTIQA+ rainbow community,” she said.
“2023 was a huge festival with at least 4,000 people checking out Fair Day. This year we’re expecting more than 5,000 people from the Gold Coast, surrounding areas and interstate visitors to join in.
“This year’s Pride Festival is going to be our biggest and brightest so far and we’ve carefully curated the program to ensure it’s diverse and has broad appeal. There’s truly something for everyone.”
‘Huge need for community on the Gold Coast’
Gold Coast Pride Festival co-director Vince Siciliani also runs local group Gold Coast Rainbow Communities with Danni.
As well as Gold Coast Pride, the group hosts a variety of events throughout the year.
Vince said every day, they get inquiries from Coast community members asking about activities, events and support services for them.
“We make new contacts, often multiple times a day, with inquiries from queer people, parents, carers and family members,” he said.
“The community’s still recovering from the negative mental health impacts of prolonged isolation and social disconnection during the pandemic. Now the cost of living crisis is also hurting our community disproportionately.
“There’s a huge need for more LGBTIQA+ community activities, events and connections on the Gold Coast. That’s what the Gold Coast Pride Festival is here to provide.”
Gold Coast Pride Festival 2024 returns from Friday (May 31) and runs all weekend. Find out more at the Facebook page and website.

I had the pleasure of meeting my next guest at a networking group last year and was delighted when she agreed to be interviewed for my blog. Over to Sue…
The Fun Stuff:
What part of the world do you come from?
I hail from Leicester in the East Midlands, and lived there until I was 18 and left with high hopes for college.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
For a few years, from the age of around 11, I fancied being a DJ. I hosting a pretend radio show regularly with my friend from across the street from our respective bedrooms! We made up our own top 20 charts, including a “B” side chart – we thought some of these were too good to overlook – and broadcasted religiously twice a week for a couple of years.
List three words to describe yourself.
Sensitive, loyal, creative.
Who would play you in a film about your life?
Cate Blanchette, she is a real chameleon, and so believable in each role.
What’s your favourite snack food when writing?
Crisps! Not a good idea to have too many Pringles to hand…
If you had a super power, what would it be?
To be able to read minds, and really get a sense of what others are thinking and feeling (but unlike Mel Gibson in the film What Women Want, be able to switch it on and off whenever I want).
The Sensible Side:
Tell us a little about yourself. (How did you get started writing? What do you do when you’re not writing?)
Although I briefly entertained thoughts of being a journalist when I was at school, I quickly rejected this career route when my Careers Officer posed the terrifying question: “would you have the confidence to work amongst the cut and thrust of the red-tops on Fleet Street?” As a shy teenager, I instantly felt my heart sink, and replied with a resounding “no”. With that, we moved seamlessly on to other less scary sounding career suggestions such as the Civil Service.
It was only when I took early retirement aged 52 that I really began exploring writing and creativity in more depth. I experimented with journaling, and attended courses on writing poetry to help with grief and loss and workshops on self-publishing. I also posted poems regularly in the online group Damsels in Success, a networking group for women of which I was a member, which led to nominations for a Women Inspiring Women award for my writing in both 2012 and 2013.
When not writing, I enjoy regular visits to the theatre, trips to the coast and the lakes, going networking, attending workshops and meeting friends. I enjoy developing my intuition and regularly use oracle cards. This also led me to create my own deck of inspirational Believe oracle cards and an app which, to my delight, won a Janey Lee Grace Gold award.
Where did the inspiration for your ‘Believe’ non-fiction books come from?
I was encouraged to write the Morning Pages by a coach I worked with soon after I took early retirement. This technique involves free-writing 3 full sides of A4 when you first awake, as espoused by Julia Cameron in her inspirational book on creativity: The Artists Way. After using the technique for about two weeks, I found to my great surprise and delight that my writing began automatically to rhyme. The coach who had encouraged me to write the Morning Pages decided to hold an event: Believe in Your Dreams, Your Legacy, Your Power. Inspired by this theme, I wrote a poem, Believe!
I offered to collaborate with my coach by collating a book of inspirational stories by the proposed speakers for her event. Although this book did not happen for various reasons, I rediscovered my Believe poem a few months later. Shaken by reading my own words, I was hit by a sudden realisation – I was meant to go ahead with collating true stories by different women on the topic of self-belief so as to inspire others suffering from low self-belief. I set a goal to self-publish this book, and the result was my first anthology: Believe You Can Succeed published in 2013. I was also spurred on to complete the book when I entered a kindle book challenge run by the I Am Woman business network and by the support and encouragement I received after reading Believe! aloud on stage in front of an audience of 200 women in 2012.
How did you go about collecting the true stories for Believe You Can Succeed?
I largely used my intuition. At the time I was meeting many inspirational women at the various networking events and courses that I attended. (I became a self-confessed course junkie on my journey of exploration on leaving work!) I had a saying “whoever is meant to be in the book will be in the book.” I would ask people if they wanted to contribute whenever it felt appropriate to do so – often because it felt like that person had experienced and overcome some kind of hardship or had grown in self-belief by achieving something that was important to them. Usually I would get an affirmative answer straightaway. One contributor, for example, responded by saying: “people are always saying I have a great story, and should write a book…”
Can you give us a brief excerpt from one of your books?
The following excerpt is taken from my story, Creativity and Connection, published in Believe You Can Succeed.
“Sue, stand up! Stand up! Be bold, be strong,
Your talent, on a world stage, truly does belong”
I wrote these words early one morning in March 2012. Words flowed easily and effortlessly as I typed into my computer, and within ten to fifteen minutes I had completed my poem: Believe! I stared at the words on the screen before me with amazement. I had no idea why my writing was flowing so easily, and felt slightly puzzled, yet elated, that it was!
I was quizzical with good reason. The previous evening, I had participated in yet another coaching session; the latest of many healing and self-development activities that I had enrolled in during recent years. I was continually searching for answers. What was causing me to feel disconnected from others and from a real sense of passion and purpose about the direction of my life? The previous night’s event had been broadcast live to anyone who chose to listen. This left me with an underlying sense of apprehension and fear. The all too familiar fear of being judged and found wanting; shame at the thought of being exposed as having nothing valuable to say or offer…
You blend poetry with real-life stories in Believe You Can! You’ve also written a book of poetry (I Am Unique) that helps inspire self-belief. How important is poetry to you as a personal development writer?
Poetry is very important to me as a personal development writer. As mentioned above, it was my poem, Believe! that first inspired me to publish my books. I find poetry is a great way to unleash my creativity and to help express squashed down feelings and emotions. I also think it can bring comfort and inspiration to others. I have been touched to receive feedback as to how my poetry has helped others in times of difficulty. For example, I recently received a thank you message from someone who regularly reads poems from the Believe books when she finds herself feeling down.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I am currently updating my first book; Believe You Can Succeed. I will be adding in a small number of new stories and will relaunch it at the end of February 2019. In addition, I am in the process of collating stories from women aged 50 plus for a new anthology of Believe stories to be released in May. Lack of self-belief is something we can all relate to at some time or another, and sharing stories and insight into how others have overcome their fears can be a great inspiration to others when they are at a low point.
As for my own writing, I am working on two further self-help books, both aimed at women in their fifties. One of these aims to inspire women to write and publish their own books, the other, The Midlife Detective encourages women to use the tried and tested skills of the detective to solve the mystery of their missing sparkle.
