The pandemic has changed the dynamics of traditional office spaces and has reconciled the world with the idea of working from the comfort of their homes. Most people have gladly accepted the thought of abandoning formal spaces and dress codes to a comfortable atmosphere and attire. An office is more than just a workspace, it means different things for different people. The office is not merely a physical infrastructure of seating and an uninterrupted supply of Wi-Fi, it is much more. It is a place for networking, a place to be social, a place to step away from the domestic grind and a place to discover yourself.
Working from home is comforting in many aspects. An end to those long commutes, relentless traffic, and a significant reduction in travel and food costs has been a definite plus for most people. The mirage of work-life balance has finally seen light for most of us. Some employees have also reported improvement in their mental health whilst working from the confines of their homes.
Diya Prasad*, a financial analyst working for an IT company in Hyderabad, claims that working from a physical office was extremely exhausting for her. Even though her working hours have increased while working from home, she can now cook healthy meals for herself, find time to work out, watch TV and work in a relaxed atmosphere, in the comfort of her house.
On the flipside, work from home comes with its own set of challenges. People living in big families have found it inconvenient to distance personal and professional responsibilities.
Isha Khanna*, a Delhi-based Professor and a mother of two find it hard to deliver video-based lectures as well as keep her children occupied while she is working.
Akash Raheja*, who works for an NGO, feels office work has increased exponentially during COVID-19. Being at home with his parents and working beyond office hours has been a tough balancing act for him.
Erratic power and internet supply have been a major complaint among people working from home in India.
Neha Reddy*, a Bangalore-based HR consultant, feels the lack of an ergonomic seating and working area, has made working from home strenuous for her. Being in HR, on-boarding new recruits, and integrating them in the company has been a challenge for Neha.
A workplace has been synonymous with social interactions, they are a window to broader horizons awaiting beyond the confines of domesticity.
Naina Singh*, a journalist from Bangalore, misses socializing with her colleagues. Staying alone under lockdown for such a prolonged duration has made people yearn for human contact.
Fahim Mirza*, an account manager at an Electronics company in Hyderabad, also feels that personal interactions keep the team morale going and are necessary for productivity.
As the outbreak continues unabated, companies are now exploring remote working options for a longer duration. Companies like Facebook and Google have declared work from home till the end of 2020 for most of their employees. The extension of work from home for the foreseeable future will require streamlining of inherent weaknesses of the system. Collaborative brainstorming and team coordination are an absolute essential in most corporate cultures, so a model that combines both works from home, as well as the need to go to the office once in a while, will have to be deployed. One such concept that several companies and individuals are now exploring is co-living residences. These housing precincts encompass bedrooms, living areas as well as in-room workstations. They also have a cafeteria for in-house dining and coffee. So, while you save time in trying to cook, you can socialize with fellow residents responsibly and also grab a cup of coffee.
Shrey Kapoor*, a resident at Buzz Quarter (A co-living complex by Living Quarter) in Hyderabad, claims this lockdown has been the best of both worlds for him. The premise has not only been safe from infections but also helped him work optimally without power and internet outages. While maintaining social distance, he has also had the company of fellow residents during the lockdown. He has certainly been able to work more efficiently than he would have, had he returned to his hometown in Delhi. Moonis Ali, the co-founder of Living Quarter, believes that co-living units that include private living areas and shared spaces with room for adequate social distancing, as well as provide amenities akin to office complexes, are the need of the hour. Such residential set-ups provide working millennials the flexibility of working from home as well as visiting offices when required. Moreover, the communal nature of co-living housing is well-balanced with respect for individual privacy. Thus, a new normal is emerging wherein the efficiency of work from home will have to be expanded while retaining the elements of office culture.
