𝓭ay 𝓮ight.
daryl dixon and forced proximity.
Tumblr media
staring at the single bed in the middle of the small room, you can’t help but stifle a laugh. it’s the last thing you expected when you and daryl rolled up to the abandoned cabin, both exhausted and hoping for a bit of rest after a long day of scavenging.
“just one bed,” you murmur, glancing over at daryl, who’s already crossing his arms and scowling.
“you take it,” he grunts, turning away to rummage through his pack for a blanket. “i’ll sleep on the floor.”
“what?” you blurt out, shaking your head. “no way, daryl. you’ve been running yourself ragged all week - you need a good night’s sleep.”
“don’t need it that bad,” he mutters, tossing the blanket down on the wooden floor as if that’s the end of the discussion. “ain’t no big deal.”
but there’s a stubbornness in you that matches his, and you don’t budge. “come on,” you plead, “the bed’s big enough for both of us. i’ll even stay on my side.”
he snorts, still not looking at you. “not sharin’ a damn bed. i’ll be fine.”
with a sigh, you step closer, your voice softening as you look at the tension in his shoulders, the lines of exhaustion etched on his face. “please, daryl,” you say, “i can’t just let you sleep on the floor.”
he finally meets your gaze, his blue eyes narrowing slightly. “why’s it matter so much to you?”
you hesitate for a moment, then shrug, giving him a small, tentative smile. “because you’re always looking out for everyone else, and… i don’t know. maybe i just wanna look out for you, too, for once.”
there’s a beat of silence, and something flickers in his expression - almost like surprise, though he quickly masks it with a gruff huff. “ain’t like i’m gonna drop dead from one night on a floor,” he grumbles, but his tone is softer now, less resistant.
“i know,” you reply, taking a step closer. “but wouldn’t it be better to be comfortable? i mean, come on, daryl. we’ve both slept in way worse places than this.”
he runs a hand through his hair, his jaw working as he looks from the bed to you and back again. finally, he lets out a low sigh. “fine,” he mutters, sounding almost reluctant. “but you better stay on your side.”
“deal,” you say quickly, unable to hide the small triumphant smile that creeps across your face. “promise i won’t hog the blankets.”
the bed creaks under his weight as he lies down, and you settle on the other side, making sure there’s enough space between you. the silence stretches out, filled only by the sound of your breathing and the faint rustle of leaves outside the cabin window.
you stare up at the ceiling, feeling the warmth of his body not far from yours, even though you’re not touching. you hadn’t realized just how tired you were until now, the day’s exhaustion catching up with you.
“this ain’t awkward or nothin’,” daryl mutters after a long stretch of quiet, his voice gruff but edged with a touch of humor.
you can’t help but smile, turning your head slightly to glance at him. “could be worse,” you say, your tone light. “at least we’re not stuck outside in the cold.”
“s’pose,” he grunts, shifting a bit like he’s trying to get comfortable but doesn’t quite know how.
you watch him out of the corner of your eye, the way his brow furrows as he stares up at the ceiling, the tension that still lingers in his body despite being in a warm bed. there’s something about his restlessness that tugs at you, and before you can stop yourself, you reach out and place a gentle hand on his arm.
“hey,” you say softly, “it’s okay to relax, you know.”
his gaze snaps to you, eyes narrowing as if he’s about to brush you off, but the words seem to get stuck in his throat. he swallows, his jaw clenching and unclenching before he finally looks away. “ain’t used to this,” he mutters, almost like an admission.
“i know,” you reply, keeping your hand where it is, the touch light but steady. “but maybe it’s okay to let your guard down. just for a night.”
he doesn’t say anything for a long moment, then lets out a low breath. “you’re a stubborn one, ain’t ya?”
“takes one to know one,” you shoot back, your voice teasing but gentle.
the corner of his mouth twitches, like he’s fighting a smile, and then he shifts a bit closer, just enough that your hand slips from his arm to rest against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath your palm.
“fine,” he murmurs, his voice low, “but if you start snorin’, i’m kickin’ you outta the bed.”
you laugh softly, the sound easing some of the tension between you. “guess i’ll have to sleep real quiet, then.”
for a moment, there’s nothing but the quiet, shared warmth of the bed, and you let your eyes close, feeling the heaviness of sleep start to creep in.
but then, daryl’s voice breaks the silence once more, softer this time, almost hesitant. “thanks,” he says, like the word doesn’t come easy to him.
you open your eyes, glancing up at him, a small smile tugging at your lips. “anytime.”
he doesn’t respond, just lets out a low hum as his arm moves ever so slightly, shifting to rest around you, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
“you don’t gotta be this nice, y’know,” he mumbles, his thumb brushing absently over your shoulder. “most people just… don’t bother.”
“well, i’m not most people,” you reply, your voice barely above a whisper as you settle closer, the warmth of his body chasing away the last chill of the night. “i bother because i want to.”
daryl’s grip tightens a fraction, like he’s holding onto the weight of your words. he lets out a long exhale, and you can feel the tension slowly seeping out of him, his posture finally relaxing as he leans into the comfort of the moment.
“guess i don’t mind it so much,” he admits after a beat, his tone softer than usual, almost vulnerable.
your smile widens, and you nestle your head against his chest, feeling his heartbeat steady and strong beneath your cheek. “good,” you murmur, “because i’m not planning on stopping anytime soon,” you utter, your grin evident in your happy tone.
he doesn’t say anything else, just lets his hand drift up to rest in your hair, his fingers gently threading through the strands as you both sink into the warmth of the shared bed. for the first time in what feels like ages, there’s a sense of peace, the kind that doesn’t come often.
as you settle closer, your head resting against his chest, you can feel daryl’s heartbeat gradually slowing under your touch. there’s a quiet comfort in the shared warmth, something you hadn't realized you’d both been craving.
daryl shifts slightly, his arm tightening around your waist as his fingers continue to comb through your hair. you glance up at him, your gaze meeting his, and there's something there - an unspoken pull, a quiet understanding passing between you.
“you really don’t gotta be this nice,” he murmurs, his voice rougher, lower, like he’s struggling to keep it steady.
“i told you,” you whisper back, your hand resting against his chest, “i bother because i want to.”
the corner of his mouth twitches, and he lowers his head just a fraction, his breath warm against your cheek. “reckon you’re gonna keep on botherin’ me, then?”
“guess i will,” you reply, your voice soft but edged with something bolder as you tilt your chin up, closing the small space between you.
and then, before you can second-guess yourself, you press your lips to his, the kiss gentle at first, a question in the way you touch him. daryl’s breath catches, and for a heartbeat, he stays still - almost like he doesn’t know how to respond.
but then he lets out a low, rough sound from the back of his throat, and his hand slides to the nape of your neck, pulling you closer as he deepens the kiss, the roughness in his touch betraying how much he’s holding back. there’s an urgency to the way his mouth moves against yours, a hunger that simmers just beneath the surface, and you can feel it in the way his fingers tighten in your hair, the way his other hand settles at the small of your back, keeping you pressed close.
when you finally break apart, breathless and flushed, he rests his forehead against yours, his eyes dark and half-lidded as he studies your expression. “damn,” he mutters, his voice low and a little hoarse, “you really don’t let up, do ya?”
you smile, your hand slipping up to cup his jaw, your thumb brushing over the stubble there. “not when it comes to you,” you admit, your voice barely above a whisper.
daryl lets out a quiet chuckle, and before you know it, he’s leaning in again, capturing your mouth in another kiss - this one deeper, slower, as if savoring every moment. the warmth of his lips, the roughness of his touch, it all makes your head spin, and you can’t help but melt into him, letting yourself get lost in the way he’s finally letting down his guard.
when he finally pulls back, there’s a new warmth in his gaze, something softer but just as intense. “reckon i could get used to this,” he murmurs, his thumb tracing lightly over your cheek.
“good,” you reply, your voice a little breathless, “because i’m still not planning on stopping anytime soon,” you giggle out, repeating your words from earlier.
he doesn’t answer, he just smiles and pulls you closer, his lips brushing yours again in a promise that lingers long after the kiss ends, leaving you both a little less guarded, a little more open to whatever this might become.

Daryl Dixon Headcanons (I’m back!!)
hey guys !! I’m back <333 I’ve been working so much I wanted to spoil yall with some more daryl head canons. I’m getting back in the groove of my routine so I’ll be able to physically be able to post instead of reposting. enjoy !! let me know if you have any requests for fics
Daryl would take off his jacket and give it to you when you’re on watch, you’d tell him he needs it and he’s like “nah, take it”
Daryl kissing you’re arm, hand, and knuckles when he’s stressed out >>>>
If you’d be chubby in this world (much like me) you’d be ashamed but Daryl would reassure you that it doesn’t matter anymore
Daryl would love you’re curves and impurities
On Hershel’s farm, Daryl would beg Hershel for him to give you a bed or couch to sleep in
Hershel would agree, but he’d never tell you Daryl gave that request
At the prison you would make Daryl ramen and he’d gobble it up and you’d go “it’s just ramen” but to him it’s so much more because nobody has ever served him before
Daryl would start pining for you first
He would stare at you from a distance because he’s so shy
Despite this he’s the one that makes the first move by kissing you on Hershel’s farm
Daryl would fall for you at the CDC
He starts falling for you after seeing you drinking wine, brushing through you’re freshly wet hair, and looking in the mirror with a long hoodie
The cherry on top for Daryl would be when you crawl in bed with him
He would be like “what’re you doin?” And you’d be like “I can’t sleep” and instead of pushing you away he’d take a deep breathe from nerves and go “mm stay”
Daryl and you would be inseparable
This man would take on a whole army for you
You would be pregnant with Daryl’s baby, you would give birth on the road on the way to Alexandria, Aaron of course seeing this and putting formula in the road
Rick would think it’s poison and Daryl would threaten to kill him or anyone if they try to take it, especially for the baby
As soon as you arrive in Alexandria, the baby would be brought to the doctors to be checked out. Daryl would stick by him/her the whole time. Deanna would say “I don’t know how but it’s a miracle they and you’re wife made it”
Daryl would be such a girl dad
He’d try so hard to protect Alexandria to make it safe for you and you’re child
This is all I have for now, I hope yall enjoy 🥰🥰 I’ll be sure to give as many update as I can !!

Yk that argument Daryl had with Shane at the barn? Put your own spin on it and include the reader somehow, maybe she even tries to break them up and he is still pissed. Afterwards he goes off to sulk in his anger trying to ignore you, but it’s too hard

The Odd Man Out
There you all were, away from Hershel's house, near the barn. Your heart was pumping blood more than what felt like necessary, your knees had become weak, all ready to betray you and cause you to collapse to the ground.
"This is unacceptable, man." Shane breathed out with fire, drawing circles infront of the barn gate.
"All this time..." He didn't finish his sentence and chuckled exasperatedly.
"Shane. Calm down. This is Hershel's land."
"I'll- I'll find a way to figure this-"
Shane came at Rick when Lori got between the two of them, pressing her right hand to Shane's chest. Her eyes scolded him as Shane gave her a quick stare and rolled his eyes.
Shane was staring at the barn gate, hands rested on his hips, shaking his head as all you could hear was him mumbling to himself.
Your eyes scanned the barn and its perimeter, observing every distressed face.
"You know we gotta leave man. Now we been talking about Fort Benning for a while..." Shane turned to all of you as Rick didn't let him say a word and raised his hand as a warning.
"We can't leave." He shook his head.
The side of your eyes caught Carol and how he wrapped her arms around herself, bottom lip trembling, eyes glossy with tears to come.
"My daughter is out there." Her voice was shaky. She looked taken aback as everyone gazed upon her. You could tell she didn't like to be the center of attention, especially at a time like this.
"We're gonna find your daughter, OK?" Lori rushed to Carol, offering a sense of support as she squeezed her arm, they were glued to one another.
Your eyes shifted to Shane as you shielded your eyes from the sun. He studied your face for a second or so. A faint snicker painted his lips. He knew why you had stayed quiet so far, he was the one that you spoke in discreet -though you felt that the cat was gonna be out of the bag any second-
You felt uneasy under his gloomy gaze as you looked away, changing your position in which you rested your entire body weight on one leg, arms crossed. You eyes were fixated on the others for a brief second to see if anyone caught that tense eye contact you happened to make with the most troubled man in the group.
Shane walked past you, not skipping to give you one last dark stare as he made his way to Rick.
"I think it's the time that we all start to just consider the other possibility."
You sensed everyone tilting their heads to his direction. Daryl stood next to you, you almost heard his breathing go more and more shallow, irritation growing denser through his veins as he fixated his eyes on him; squiented as ever, dauntless as ever.
"I ain't leavin' no one behind." He squiented his eyes at him, his body still as a stone as you could see he clenched his jaw firmly.
Shane ran his hand through his shaved head as he clasped his hands over it.
"Nah man, I-" Shane were to start another babbling session on a bothersome argument right when you flinched at Daryl's loud words.
"I'm close ta findin' dis girl. I jus' found a damn doll two days ago" He was coming at Shane when you felt like it was time you partook in this before it got out of hand.
"You found a doll, Daryl. That's what you did, you found a doll."
Shane pressed his lips together as he leered at Carol before speaking.
"All I'm sayin' is she could've been dead by now and we're-"
"Enough. Shane, enough." You looked at him in disbelief, eyes wide with your hand reflexively being up in the air towards his direction as a sense of warning before he took this any further.
"Ya dun' know the hell yer talkin' 'bout."
It was Shane one side and Daryl on the other side. Things got ugly pretty swiftly as you had to step back when Daryl came at him but it wasn't a few seconds later that you stepped in once again, punches flying in the air, some hitting your chin with their elbows. Your head and body were thrown back by their aggression reflected on their action.
Dust particles, the strings of hays that were laid out on the perimeter were awakened by this fallout. Your eyes got stung by them, this was like hell that you had no control in whatsoever.
"Hey, you back off."
"Come on now." Dale asserted.
It was Rick, Lori and you trying to break them up. Under the heat of the sun, with your red faces and greased clothes were you tossed in a fight near a barn full of walkers.
"Leave. Leave now." You demanded Shane. You pointed him with your finger, forehead wrinkled and brows creased as he clapped his hands in an amusing manner.
"You got a real mouth on you, I'll give you that." He cackled and continued with his chest heaving.
"Now you care? 'Cause last time I checked you were the one who said 'it's a waste of time anyway' " He waved his hands next to his head theatrically and thinned his voice as if to mock you.
"That's not what I said prick." You stepped forward, walking slowly as you widened your eyes. You were trying to catch your breath, unevenly panting as your eyes were out of focus.
It was Daryl's voice that stopped you
" 'S this true?" He had his hands on his hips, gazing upon you through his lashes. It was like he was let down, couldn't even stomach looking you in the eyes, though his eyes had an uneasy beam to them, as if what you were about to say meant more than what both of you could ever dare to imagine.
"No" You shook your head, you clenched your fists without noticing. You felt goosebumps swarming all over your body, somehow making you chill under the radiant sun.
"Fuck no." Your head turned to Carol instinctly, and then the others.
It was a moment of suffering. You, standing toe to toe with everyone. Their hesitant stares, their subtle glances that traveled back and forth with everyone else but you had riled you up yet you knew you were in big trouble and perhaps in the wrong.
You spanked your forehead with both of your palms, inhaling a huge breath in as you shut your eyes and stared all of them back.
"Come on. That motherfucker's lyin' to your faces."
" 'S he?" Daryl inquired, though his tone gave away that he thought he knew the answer. You could never wrap your head around how a redneck like him, could be so tender to a woman he despised. Yet there comes to question, didn't he despise you all? What had happened that he was now a decent person, defending someone who wasn't his blood nor his kin like a sworn confidant behind closed door?
Your eyes darted to the others.
"You believe him?"
Them looking down at their shoes was your answer.
"Stupid bitch."
Daryl mumbled under his breath as he walked away with slumped shoulders and a crossbow he had put aside.
Your face went white, shoulders sagging as you did what you had thought of doing all along.
You kept breathing sharply, turning around and lunging at Shane. He took a step back, eyeing Rick specifically to come and get you as he already had done so.
"Lying son of a bitch." You spat, your hair was everywhere on your face. You could hear your heartbeat in your eardrums.
"Easy. Easy." Rick kept his hand above your cleavage, fingers gripping the sides of your arms.
"I'm fine." You fumed as you moved your hair aside from your face.
"Wha's with all tha' if he 's lyin?" Daryl commented while he was tapping his feet to the ground, resembling a jaded eleven-year old in a family gathering. He pointed at you with his hand as he emphasized on the word "that". You had gone mad infront of all of them. You were bewildered, brows raised with a blank stare in your eyes for a few seconds.
"Look, that's not what I said at all." You began. You pouted your face as soon as everyone started putting your words into your mouth and jabbering.
"Geez, am I the only one who gives a damn 'bout this lil' girl?" Daryl snapped, walking around in circles and spreading out his accusing tone to everyone.
You shook your head in apace, trying to select the proper words to utter. You pressed your lips together, face heating under the wrathing heat wave. You looked around like a child in need of emotional support. Hands on your hips as Rick took a step ahead.
"Everyone go. Now. We'll sort this out tonight."
You got a chance to gaze upon Daryl for the first as his eyes were fixated on Carol. After all, they had formed a relationship out of this. You barely remembered anyone getting along with Daryl or him with others. You walked towards the house with thought filling your head and the misconception you felt needed to be debunked.
Few days passed, everyone still being furious with you. Little Sophia coming out of the barn as a walker didn't aid to your situation whatsoever.
You were sitting on a rock near the fields on Hershel's property. One of your elbows were resting on your knee as your other hand was supporting your chin. You were observing the stubble land laid out infront of you, cicadas jumping from one to another.
The wobbly wind was aggravating with the way it was blowing hot air to your face and body when your eye caught someone walking out of the woods into the stubble field.
Your position changed gradually with you fixing your hunchback as your arms fell loose next to you and you stretched your body a few inches taller to see who it was.
Daryl.
His eyes were checking out his surroundings as his crossbow was swinging on his hand. He wiped his hand on his forehead when his eyes noticed you.
Uneasy features were tugged on your face, not knowing what to do or say.
He passed by you, putting his best work not to acknowledge your existence.
"Daryl." You softly said.
Though your hands were resting on the sharp-edged rock , head slightly tilted and eyes scrutinising your knees that had scrapes all over it, you somehow managed to sense him throwing his head back and fully preparing himself to say a word to you.
"Yeah." He reacted.
It took a while for you to turn and face him entirely. He was looking rather fed up with you. His lips were pale and pressed, his goatee beard all tangled, he must've been scratching it and running his fingers through it, you assumed. It was something you had noticed him doing back in the quarry.
"I'm sorry but all I said was 'we might be better off elsewhere' when I happened to be absent-minded around him. You know-"
He squinted his eyes at you, his chest heaving up with a heartburn as he barked.
"Ain't ma headache no more."
"The girl 's dead."
He pointed one of his stained arrow at you, a vein appearing on the side of his neck. He was blaming every inch of you from head to toe.
You stood infront of him, pupils dilated, hands in a loose punch as no amount of air was enough to fill your lungs.
"And I'm terribly sorry-"
"No yea ain't." He came closer at you, crossbow on one hand and arrow on the other. His neck was stretching forward, sweat beading the below of his hairline.
"Don' give me tha' crap." He used his arrow once again, pointing it at you in a circular motion.
"Yer upset only 'cause he outed yea like tha', infront of the whole lot."
"You hear yourself?" You gasped slightly at his words. You were more confused than angry.
"Whatever dis is, keep it ta yerself."
You heard the fading tone in his voice, he grew less and less attentive with you within 5 minutes.
He adjusted his crossbow and arrows on one hand and started ambling towards the house with his hand scratching the back of his neck.
Sun shone through his golden hair, he was walking aimlessly. It was like you had sucked away the energy left in him for the day.
"Your one stupid motherfucker." You hissed, standing on your tiptoes and extending your torso forward to make sure he heard you.
It was all a misunderstanding, Shane twisting your words back then and now no one giving you the time to explain yourself but only putting words into your mouth. You had lost all hope for the situation for the time being, after all it was still so fresh, everyone was still so vulnerable. No one could even dare trying to foresee anything.
"What'd ya say?" He turned his head towards your direction, his body adjusting to his head gradually.
"No one is listening to me but they're believing that troublesack for a man." You fumed in one breath, you avoided eye contact with him.
He blew raspberries without sticking out his tongue, his cynical body language took over your mentality.
"Yer a real peach with yer tears n' all." A half smile on his lips, completely not interested in what you had to say. He had biases about you all along, this was only the cherry on top.
"Do you really think I didn't care about Sophia the slighest?" You asked with an ajar mouth, eyes fixated on his body as in order not to miss anything you could interpret for your own good.
His neck stretched forward once again, the glazing sun was aiming right at him, perhaps this wasn't the best time.
"I ain't yer buddy, ain't yer nothin' " He growled, his hands were gripping his weapon as he wiped his sweat with his arm.
"I sure ain't the one yea should be makin' amends ta" He hushed, turning around.
"I'm not making amends!" You declared.
Which was true, you weren't. You just hoped for to be understood and not have everyone jump into conclusions about you.
You heard him murmur "Sure sounds like it." As he was making his way through the long stubble to the van.
That night, on a chilly weather were you above the van with Dale as you were assigned to assist him during his watch.
You sat on one of the camp stools, shotgun laying between your thighs vertically. Though Dale was sitting infront of you, your eyes were fixated behind him. The long roads, the long fields.
"Hey, old man. Rick wants yea back at the house."
You flinched at Daryl's voice becoming less and less muffled as he came near the van.
"Ohh what now." You heard Dale complain under his breath as he got up.
"Heads up." Daryl warned as he threw his crossbow on top of the van while he was yet climbing the ladder.
He didn't expect to see you there. His eyes flickered across your face for a moment or so as he looked around subtly, obviously looking for Glenn with whom you were replaced to assist Dale.
"The hell?" He inquired deadly with half-lidded eyes as he straddled on the chair infront of you.
"Just don't even talk if you aren't good with words." You huffed, not even seeing him fit to make eye contact with.
He remained silent as he rubbed his eyes. He hadn't been getting any sleep.
"Ain't no need fer words with yer bullshit." He scoffed, resting his head on his hands, looking around just like you.
"All this time spent together and you haven't figured out what kind of a person I could be. Not even the slighest, huh?" You sighed, not rushing, taking your time with each word.
Your heart was sinking down your torso, it felt like. Your eyes were droppy, fingers at the tip of the shotgun, seeking to be occupied by anything. Anything but him.
His eyes were glued on your eyes as you weren't bothering to meet with his gaze.
You pegged him for a complex man at all times, deep down you always knew he wasn't someone easy to come terms with. You were not gonna be seen by him, not in this, not in anything.
But at that exact moment, when two of you took a minute to enjoy the calmness, quietness around you, letting your minds talk to yourselves instead of words, you dared to hope for a change.
He could change after all, you saw it with your own eyes.

it had been a week since the group returned from their last supply run. as usual, you'd found a quiet spot in the prison, back against the cold concrete wall, a pencil in hand, and your notebook resting on your knees. with each sketch, you could lose yourself in the lines and shapes, letting the chaos of the outside world fall away.
daryl had seen you tucked away like this more times than he could count. he often found himself stealing glances in your direction when he thought you weren’t looking, the way you focused intently on your drawings. there was something calming about it, a slice of peace in a world that had long since forgotten the meaning of the word. he liked that you managed to create beauty in such a bleak place, and it stirred something warm inside him.
as he gathered supplies for the next run, he couldn’t help but feel a pull toward you, the way a moth is drawn to a flame. but even as that warmth spread through him, a thread of hesitation tugged at his heart. he didn't know how to approach you without sounding awkward or making things weird. you were sunshine to him, and he feared his often grumpy demeanour would cast a shadow over your light. but he was trying, to be kinder, especially around you. the group made it easy, at this point, rick was almost like a brother to him, and carol a best friend. to his eventual dismay, this meant she knew a whole lot about him and could read him like a book.
“hey, daryl,” carol’s voice broke through his thoughts, pulling him back to the present. she had a knowing look in her eyes, the kind that made him shift uncomfortably. “you’ve been staring at her again.”
he scoffed, crossing his arms defensively. “i ain’t staring.”
“sure,” she said with a teasing smirk. “just like you weren’t the one who picked up that flower for her last week.”
that had been a mistake. you had looked so happy, your smile lighting up the whole room. and damn if that hadn’t made him feel all sorts of things. but now, he just shrugged it off. “she’s a good kid. just… i dunno, wanted to do something nice.”
carol raised an eyebrow, a playful grin on her face. “you’re not fooling anyone, daryl. you care about her.”
“i care about everyone in this group,” he replied a bit too quickly, his tone defensive.
“sure you do,” she said, walking away, leaving him alone with his thoughts.
he watched you again, how you tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, completely absorbed in your art. he wanted to be closer to you, to show you how much you meant to him. but the words always stuck in his throat, trapped beneath layers of his own insecurity. he knew he wasn’t good enough for you, but he wanted you like he never had before.
later that day, the group gathered to discuss the next supply run. rick, as usual, was leading the meeting, his face drawn and serious. “we need to get more medical supplies. that last run barely did us any good.”
you were sitting under carol while she toyed with your hair, comfortable inbetween her legs while she was sitting on one of the beds. flipping through your notebook, a page with a half-finished drawing of a sunset catching your eye. you liked how it reminded you of the days before everything fell apart.
“we’ll need someone to stay back and guard the place,” rick continued, looking around the room. “any volunteers?”
before you could even think, carol spoke up. “i’ll stay. i can help keep watch.”
“me too,” you chimed in, glancing at daryl, who met your gaze for a brief moment. there was something in his eyes that made your heart race, but you quickly looked away, focusing on the conversation at hand, hoping the heat rising to your cheeks wasn’t too obvious.
“you sure?” rick asked, his voice skeptical. “it’s dangerous out there.”
“we’re capable,” you said firmly. “if something happens, we can handle it.”
daryl watched the exchange, his brow furrowing as he weighed the risks. he knew you were strong, but he also hated the idea of you being out there alone. he couldn’t shake the need to protect you, but he didn’t want to stifle your independence either.
“i’ll - i’ll be careful, i swear” you added, sensing the tension in the room, especially from daryl.
after the meeting, the group dispersed, but daryl lingered behind, gathering his gear. he overheard rick talking to carol, their voices low and serious.
“she’s too inexperienced,” rick said, frustration lacing his words. “what if something happens? we can’t afford to lose anyone.”
rick loved you, he really did, as much as everyone else in the group, but he also had a tendency to worry, especially about you. you weren’t new to the group, you’d been with them since the camp, same time as rick. rick had found you limping down the road, a herd of walkers following not far behind you. he’d scooped you up as quick as he could, and since then, he’d always felt rather overprotective of you. your naivety often put him on edge, his worst nightmare would be you ending up in a bad situation because you were often too trusting of others. you didn’t know what kinda guy he could’ve been when he’d picked you up in the middle of the street, but you didn’t struggle at all. he cared for you like a father.
“she’s tougher than you think, rick,” carol replied. “but she’s also got a soft side. you know that. don’t underestimate her.”
“it’s not that,” rick snapped. “it’s just… i mean she’s irresponsible, she’s - ”
you walked past them, catching the tail end of the conversation. your heart sank, unsure of what to make of it. you wanted to prove yourself, but hearing rick’s concerns made you doubt your abilities. you ducked into a hallway, hoping to clear your head.
daryl noticed you walking away, and for a moment, he considered following you. he wanted to check on you, make sure you were okay. but then he thought about the conversation with rick, and fear gripped him. he didn’t want to sound like a worried parent, but you were really important to him.
he took a deep breath and made his decision. he would go on the run with the others, but he would make sure to bring back something special for you. maybe that would lighten your mood.
as the day wore on, the run took longer than expected. they fought off a few walkers and scrounged around for supplies, but daryl’s mind was elsewhere. he kept thinking about you, how you had looked when rick was questioning your abilities. the way your smile faltered, and your confidence seemed to waver. he hated that rick could make you feel small, even if he didn’t mean to.
when they finally returned, daryl felt a rush of relief to see you sitting in the same spot, sketching in your notebook. the others were busy unpacking supplies, but he couldn’t take his eyes off you. your brow was furrowed in concentration, and it made him want to protect that focus, to shield you from any negativity.
“hey,” he said softly, approaching you cautiously.
you looked up, surprised, and your face lit up with a smile that made his heart skip. “hey, daryl! how was the run?”
“it was alright,” he replied, his gaze flicking to your notebook. “what’re you working on, sweetheart?”
“just a little something,” you said, your cheeks flushing. “nothing special.”
he leaned over, trying to sneak a peek at your drawing. “looks pretty damn special to me.”
you turned the notebook slightly, revealing a sketch of the prison with a sunset in the background. it was beautiful, full of vibrant colours, and it made his heart swell. “y’re real talented, you know that?”
“thanks, daryl.” you replied, a hint of shyness in your tone. “it’s just a hobby.”
“hobbies are important,” he said, feeling bold. “keeps you sane in this crazy world.”
“what about you?” you asked, curious. “do you have any hobbies?”
he scratched the back of his neck, feeling awkward. “hunting, i guess. and, uh, taking care of my bike.”
“i’d love to see your bike sometime,” you said, your eyes sparkling with interest.
“yeah?” he said, surprised. “i could show you. it’s not much, but it gets me around.”
“i’m sure it’s more than that,” you replied, smiling softly.
“here,” he said, shifting the conversation. “um, i got you something.” he pulled out a worn paperback book from his backpack, the edges frayed but the cover intact. “found it on the run. thought you might like it.”
your eyes widened, and you took the book from him gently. “oh daryl, you didn’t have to…”
“i wanted to,” he said, a hint of shyness in his voice too. “thought you could use a new read.”
you opened the book and gasped, looking up at him with a mix of disbelief and joy. “this is one of my favourite authors!”
“really?” he said, the corner of his mouth twitching up into a smile. “figured you might like it.”
you hugged the book to your chest, your eyes brimming with tears. “thank you so much!”
“ain’t no big deal,” he said, trying to sound casual, but the warmth in his cheeks betrayed him. “now don’t you go cryin’ on me.”
you laughed through your tears, and he felt his heart swell. “sorry, i can’t help it. ‘s just really thoughtful of you. you always do nice things for me.” you said, giggling through the tears now streaming down your face. you didn’t really know why you were crying, but you hoped daryl didn’t think too much about it.
“i just think you deserve it,” he replied, shrugging but unable to hide his smile.
“you’re really sweet,” you said, wiping a tear from your cheek.
“ain’t sweet,” he teased. “you’re just a damn crybaby.”
you playfully nudged him, and he chuckled, feeling the tension that had built throughout the day start to dissipate. “you really like it?” he asked, wanting to make sure he hadn’t messed up.
“i love it,” you said sincerely. “and it’s just what i needed. i’ve never read this one before. ‘m gonna start reading it tonight.”
“good,” he said, his heart racing. “maybe we could, uh, read together sometime.”
“i’d love that,” you replied, your smile brightening even more.
he was struck by the way you looked at him, your eyes shining with genuine happiness. it made him feel brave, like maybe he could push past the awkwardness. “i mean, if you want to.”
“i definitely do,” you said, your voice soft.
the two of you stood there, the world around you fading as the moment stretched on. daryl felt a surge of affection that he could no longer contain. he stepped closer, the heat radiating off you making him bold.
“can i?” he asked, his voice low, leaning in slightly.
you nodded, and without thinking, he closed the distance, pressing his lips against yours. it was soft and tentative at first, but then you melted into him, deepening the kiss. the warmth spread through him, and he felt like he was finally letting go of everything that had held him back.
when you pulled away, breathless, he couldn’t help but laugh lightly. “damn, you really are a crybaby.”
you giggled, a flush spreading across your cheeks. “maybe just a little.”
“well, if you keep bein’ so sweet, i might just have to keep makin’ you cry,” he teased, unable to hide his grin.
“i wouldn’t mind that,” you said, biting your lip, a shy smile creeping onto your face.
“good,” he said, his heart racing. “because i ain’t goin’ anywhere. you’re stuck with me.”
“i wouldn’t want it any other way,” you replied, feeling a sense of peace settle between you two.
as the night drew closer, the two of you settled into a comfortable rhythm, sharing stories and laughter, the world outside fading away. daryl felt a lightness in his chest that he hadn’t experienced in a long time, and he knew that no matter what came next, he wanted to face it with you by his side.
