« Known globally for highly stylized genre films depicting the gritty underbelly of society with brutal violence and crimes, South Korean cinema was long characterized by what one film critic famously called “dark blue filter thrillers” mostly made by and starring men. If women appeared at all, it was often as one-dimensional clichés, serving as plot devices like a femme fatale, a murder or rape victim, an innocent lover or wife, or a self-sacrificing mother.

To challenge this norm and support women filmmakers, some women started to not only watch female-driven films but also buy more tickets than they could even use for such movies in a campaign called “spirit-sending”— meaning they would be at the theaters in spirit. The campaign turned a surefire box-office disaster to an award-winning hit, saving the career of a rare female director.

“It was truly a miracle,” Lee Ji-Won said of Miss Baek, her 2018 debut film about a female former convict trying to save a little girl from abusive parents. The drama, which portrays the friendship between two abuse survivors, was such a rarity in an industry dominated by what Lee called “films with cops, gangsters, naked women, or rom-coms” that it was snubbed by almost all investors and distributors. One investor promised to fund it only if Lee changed the lead character to a man. Another bet that “the disaster-in-waiting” would perish in cinemas in a week—a warning that almost materialized, as the film’s opening-day sales were so poor that it was projected to sell less than a quarter of the tickets required just to break even.

“Everybody, myself included, was so sure that the movie would crash and burn, and my career was over—until weird things started to happen on social media,” Lee told me.

Impressed by the rare women-led film with complex female characters, made by an even rarer woman director, many women watched it again and again, buying tickets even when they couldn’t attend. Ticket sales rebounded sharply as #SendingSpirit became a viral hashtag that continued for months until the film broke even. Miss Baek eventually won rave reviews and swept major awards, and the same investors who’d once snubbed Lee began to court her, begging to see her scripts.

“The gesture of solidarity by all these women was just overwhelming,” Lee said, wiping away tears. “They, like me, were so thirsty for movies portraying women as complex, multidimensional human beings.” In 2021, she finished shooting her second movie, featuring some of the country’s biggest stars.

The “spirit-sending” campaign lived on to drive the success of other women-led movies, like the film adaptation of Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982, allowing such films to defy the boycott campaigns that often targeted “feminism-stained movies.” While the film was hit by thousands of 0 percent ratings even before its official release (causing a vast gender disparity in its ratings on the top web portal—2.99 among men and 9.45 among women), Kim Ji-Young eventually became a hit watched by millions at home. For those who don't get the reference: "Isekai", sometimes called "portal fantasy", is where someone from our wold ends up in another one. They often get there in a way that leaves it ambiguous or heavily implied that they died in the process. The most common way this happens is when they're crossing the road and there's a truck headed right for them, and they wake up in this other world. Which is probably not a last-moments hallucination but maybe... So yeah. Isekai Trucking.

Villains have overrun your world. They have something that can stop your every efforts, thwart all your magic. Your world needs heroes. It's your job to go out and get them. As many as possible. Only the magical energy released by near-death experience can trigger planar travel, so here you are, causing as much near-death as you can as quickly as possible. With a giant truck.

You do need to balance hitting people with your truck (which thankfully leaves no evidence) with actually getting caught. Getting caught is likely to put you in a near-death experience, which sends you back to your world. That's no good. Getting thrown in our prisons with their iron bars and steel manacles, that's no good either. You need to be sneaky. And clever. And probably befriend some humans who can help cover for you. And then steal a truck and hit people with it.

This is complicated by the fact that you play "fey" monsters. The system doesn't do a whole lot to support that. It's assumed that you're wearing the traditional "Benjamin Grimm in a trenchcoat" level of disguise, that you have no special strength or powers beyond mild cartoon wackiness and the kind of extreme resiliency that comes with "Heal all damage every morning". It does make the art fun. A goblin made of pipe cleaners hanging off the side of a dump truck with a baseball bat. A crazed garbage can with eyes staring out, hands on the steering wheel. A giant fuzzball engulfing a screaming pedestrian. It's all black-and-white Palladium-level stuff, but that honestly fits pretty well.

Rules are a GURPS-inspired 3d6 roll-under, with the usual four stats, a handful of mostly psychological advantages/disadvantages, and maybe more skills than you need. There are only 20 of them, but I feel like Driving, Stealth, Menace, Explain, Wait Let Me Explain (a separate and amazing skill), and Cunning cover an awful lot of territory for this game. The game would benefit from some more modern design, and maybe even being transformed into a spinoff of Eat God.

Isekai Trucking was distributed in EPS format (why???). It was on Itch for a while, but in the process of moving it over to another distributor KunColl accidentally introduced a non-Unicode character string into the title and now they can't open the original any more. They've declared the original CC-BY 4.0. Version 1.02 is the latest one if you're lucky enough to find multiple versions.

The word out of Sundance, this past January, was that Celine Song's debut feature "Past Lives" was an absolute masterpiece. One critic I'm friendly with maintained it wasn't just the best film at this year's festival, but the best film they had ever seen at Sundance, period. With every rapturous declaration, I gnashed my teeth further: While a great deal of Sundance was available to critics via the virtual portal, this film was one of the few exceptions. Its distributor, A24, had made it so, and were even more unwavering when it came to the flood of press requests for a screener after its premiere. It made a few brief rounds at Sundance in-person, and then the studio shut it down until months later, upon its release.

At the time, I was aggravated by this policy, but, now, having finally seen it, I think I understand their reasoning. As wonderful as it is, it's not the sort of awe-inspiring cavalcade of energy and ideas that, say "Everything Everywhere All At Once," another A24 film you might have heard of, was. As much as it earned critical canards by the bushel in Park City, I think it was wise for the studio to let the ground cool a bit before releasing the film to the rest of the world.

It offers echoes and reverberations, to be sure, but, in keeping with its Buddhist thematics, instead of a boulder splashing into a lake, it's more like a leaf, reddened by the lower temperatures of fall, gently gliding down upon an otherwise placid rain puddle.

CRAM - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films

SYNOPSIS:  “We all do what we gotta do to pass – except Marc. Desperate to finish his final paper, he struggles to cram all night in the library. After dozing off, Marc awakens to discover that his paper has vanished! Looking for answers and a way out of this nightmare, Marc is drawn deeper into the mysterious and enchanting stacks. Alone in the library (or so he thinks), Marc is easily frightened and considers giving up. But the library has other plans for him....”

REVIEW: CRAM taps into relatable scenarios of college life, with the emphasis of finals and deadlines. Yes, I can remember falling asleep in the college library and being woken up by staff, or was it security… Maybe it happened a few times. Regardless, there were some areas of the library that were indeed creepy. Filmmaker Abie Sidell brings all those terrors into play as he takes his character Marc through a sinister “Wonderland” ruled over by “The Master of the Books.”

I enjoyed Sidell’s screenplay. He takes his main character, Marc Lack, on an epic journey through a nightmarish landscape of academia that could be his subconscious or something darker. Clearly Marc is on a journey as he steps through doorways and finds himself in a new location on campus and faces a new challenge. Ultimately he must face an academic council that feels like the inquisition, which leads him to “The Master of the Books.” I liked the character. It has a lot of gravitas and wasn’t exploited. It could easily be a franchise in the tradition of Freddy, minus the knives. The characters are well written, the plot is engaging, and it was an entertaining ride.

The filmmakers do an excellent job of turning the library into a dark dreamscape. There are nice framed scenes that become portals into different locations. There is some slick editing that creates nice transitions and sustains a high energy level in the film. The costumes felt organic and some in the later scenes add to the dream-like quality. I’m on the fence when it comes to the makeup for “The Master of the Books.” I get that they were possibly going for a look like dried out pages of a book, but felt it could have been done more effectively. I found it distracting and was not a big fan.

I enjoyed Daniel Rudin’s score. Early in the story it adds a playful feel to the film and slowly darkens, becoming more intense as Marc’s journey progresses. It nicely underscores the emotional changes in the film, as well as supporting the tension and suspense.

Overall, the film has a solid cast. John Dimino plays Marc. He delivers a portrait of “that guy” we knew in college. He’s reminiscent of Justin Long, but a tad smoother. He brings a depth to the character that prevents it from becoming superficial. It’s both engaging and entertaining, allowing the viewer to feel some sympathy for the character. In contrast, Brandon E. Burton’s “The Master of the Books” is this grand character that feels like a James Earl Jones character with a similar deep bass voice. There is an element to the character that feels like John Housemen’s character from “The Paper Chase,” but dark in its irony and satire. The rest of the cast delivers enchanting performances that keeps the viewer in the ride and adds to the mystery and suspense of the film.

CRAM is Abie Sidell’s feature film debut… maybe. The film’s running time is under an hour. His fellow feature filmmakers are churning out films of 80 or more minutes. So yes, there is the energy, it feels tight and quick, but it’s not even 60 minutes. Sidell gets points for being a fellow native of Queens, NY. He gets points for capturing this dark tale of college life. I liked the ride. However, when you consider what you are paying to purchase a digital copy or on demand, it’s 20 or minutes shorter than other films. In comparison, “Scream VI” is 122 minutes. It’s your call my friends in fright, but I think you’ll enjoy the chills.

Key Highlights of New Tariff Order and Interconnection Agreement:

Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) had rolled out a draft telecom tariff order (TTO) in October 2016. Post final approval from supreme court of India TRAI rolled out Tariff Order and New Interconnection regulation on 03 March 2017. This time TRAI have attempted to ensure transparency, non-discrimination, consumer protection and create an enabling environment for orderly growth of the sector. Following points specified in the regulation will have an impact on the broadcasting sector:

Multi-system Operators/Distributors:

– New regulation demands declaration of following details to the authority & on a public portal, every distributor of television channels shall, within thirty days from the commencement of these regulations or within thirty days from the commencement of its operations, as the case may be, on its website, publish:

Target markets as declared under sub-regulation wherein every distributor of television channel shall declare coverage area of ​​each distribution network;

The total channel carrying capacity of its distribution network in terms of number of standard definition channels;

List of channels available on the network;

Number of channels for which signals of television channels have been requested by the distributor from broadcasters and the interconnection agreements signed;

Spare channel capacity available on the network for carrying signals of television channels; and list of channels, in chronological order, for which requests have been received from broadcasters for distribution of their channels, the interconnection agreements have been signed and are pending for distribution due to non-availability of the spare channel capacity.

– Regulatory also mandated the MSOs to specify the territories of interconnection agreement. Following are the details for describing the territories for distribution of signals of television channels:

The registered area of ​​operation of the multi-system operator as mentioned in the registration granted by the central government;

The names of specific areas for which distribution of signals of television channels has been agreed, initially, at the time of signing of the interconnection agreement; and

The names of the corresponding states/union territories in which such agreed areas as referred to in clause (b) of this sub-regulation are located.

– Compliance officer will be designated by the broadcaster and the distributor of television channel; who will ensure:

generating awareness for ensuring compliance with the provisions of these regulations;

reporting to the Authority, with respect to compliance with these regulations and directions of the Authority issued under these regulations; and

ensuring that proper procedures have been established and are being followed for compliance of these regulations.

– To ensure smooth functioning and speedy restoration, the MSO will have to provide the LCO with at least 2% of total STBs active in LCO’s network with an upper cap of 30 spare STBs — as maintenance which are not pre-activated.

– Distributors of television channels shall submit monthly subscription reports of channels and bouquet of channels to respective broadcasters as per the format specified under the Schedule VII, within seven days from the end of each calendar month.
