Here's a little something eclectic: some obscure and less popular Disney characters. How many can you recognize?
Horace Horsecollar, specifically his incarnation from the never-made TV series Maximum Horsepower. This series was proposed in the 90s for the Disney Afternoon, but was never greenlit. It's too bad; I think it would have been a really fun series. Here's the original pitch reel by Tad Stones (creator of Darkwing Duck).
Gopher, from Winnie the Pooh. Prior to his cameo in 2023's Once Upon a Studio, Gopher's last animated appearance was in 2005 in Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie (and even then, it was only archive footage from 1996's Boo to You Too!). Gopher's only other appearances were in the Kingdom Hearts games. I'm not sure why Disney used him less and less, but it's nice to see he wasn't entirely forgotten.
Stinky Pete (The Prospector) from Toy Story 2. Pete was never exactly my favorite character as a kid, but some time ago I heard that there was an old character interview where Pete claims that he's happy with his new owner Amy, and really enjoys her decorating his face. I think it's the most adorable thing ever and I'm glad I finally got around to drawing it. (I've tried to find this interview, and I could have sworn I saw it years and years ago, but the only one I can find is this one where he's his child-hating self from the movie.)
Gurgi, from The Black Cauldron. I loved him as a kid, and that feeling never went away as I grew up. He is a brave and loyal friend and deserves all the munchies and crunchies in the world.
Buzzy, from the former EPCOT attraction Cranium Command. I unfortunately never got to experience this attraction (or even EPCOT in its prime). The attraction closed in 2007, and sat abandoned for years. The animatronic of Buzzy was reported missing in 2018, with little explanation of what happened to him. Here's a couple of fun videos on the subject. #JusticeForBuzzy
Terry and Keiko (the video chat friends) from the 1994 Jeremy Irons iteration of Spaceship Earth in EPCOT. I don't expect many people to recognize these characters, as they were removed in 2007. They weren't even moving animatronics, just still figures. But I think their friendship is super adorable, and it's neat to imagine technology that can instantly and accurately translate your dialogue into a foreign language. You can see Terry and Keiko here (at 12:23).

FAVORITE VILLAIN* BINGO
*Or antagonists, or heels, or just people who do terrible things. If you think any of these chars don't belong, then whatever, man, I'm just having fun

M*ary broke up w brett in late 2020 because her last post with him was from Halloween 2020 and she didn’t post for their 5th year anniversary on 2021 and if you check she always used to do that. You can also know it by the fact she stopped mentioning having a bf on interviews and she usually would speak about him because she was with him when she got the call she got the role for ck lol but she stopped mentioning that detail ever since. and has overall stopped mentioning her private life.
But all things considered, it seems in ended on good terms because they still follow each other. she hasn’t deleted any major picture with him yet. and last year he tagged her on the premiere of a short film they did way back in 2018. so it seems that there’s still respect. as for t*anner and his old gf, she confirmed on ig stories early 2023 she was single, but a lot of things points to them being broken up since early 2022.
I believe the reason tanner/mary decided to be super private is because they had overly public relationships prior to this and it’s scary to go from best friends to lovers so keeping it private and if it is less in people’s noses helps build a solid romantic relationship. particularly because the ck is so weird towards her. another fact is that them slow dancing together on her birthday was meant to be a private moment because the makeup artist that posted it - deleted it. so yeah they are keeping the relationship private. maybe they’re waiting till the end of ck to say it since less eyes will be on them from then on.
She did post for her fifth.
I always thought something happened here TBH.
That was after some event they did for CK - May (maybe June) of 2022
You can tell she is quite upset, there was possible a phone call, he’s trying to console her and then they drive off together.
Now, they aren’t big enough stars to be hounded really, but I can still understand, getting older and keeping that stuff quiet although part of me wonders if it’s because some fans - across all fandoms - can’t seem to separate reality from fantasy especially with ships in their shows and real life couples and they would be pissed if they were to find out that Robby and Sam were together.
But it seems that have been inseparable for years - even at events surrounded by people they are always next to each other.
The matching Halloween costumes for several years running - I mean they were princess peach and bowser!!! and the constant Disney trips which have been ongoing for quite some time - the Disney dad t-shirt some people freaked over lol which, case in point of why they are keeping it private.
All the pictures of Mary with his family, especially his nephew/cousin, and Tanner with hers when she visits them.
There was even an article where she mentions going with Tanner to meet his family.
There was some school event they did too - which I believe was in Mary’s home state, if memory serves correctly.
I didn’t realize they had deleted the slow dance although, once on the internet, nothing can be truly deleted.

This Is Halloween — VoicePlay music video
youtube
The approach of spooky season is always special with VoicePlay. In 2018, it meant that it was time for their second visit to Halloween Town, which involved even more elaborate makeup than the previous one. It also contains an important reminder — don't take unwrapped candy from strangers, no matter how little and cute they might be.
Details:
title: This Is Halloween
original performers: cast of The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
written by: Danny Elfman
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 5 October 2018
My favorite bits:
the legato opening chords from Grim Grinning Ghosts under the intro section transforming into the more rhythmic opening of this song
the halftime echo of Earl and J.None's harmony lyrics behind Eli's lead melody
everybody's concerned reactions as their voices and bodies start to change
Geoff reflexively flinging the spiders from his hair at Layne
the syncopated wails of ♫ "HAL-lo-ween HAL-lo-ween" ♫
Eli's semi-operatic tone on ♫ "the next sur-priiise" ♫
the onomotopeia of ♫ "pounce pounce" ♫
their precise diction starting with ♫ "I am the clown..." ♫
Layne's little scamper behind the pumpkin tower
that bouncy ascending bass line that leads them through the key change
the driving percussion giving way to a full measure of straight double kick drums
♫ "That is our job and no we are not mean." ♫, so crisp
Eli's incredible breath control as he belts for over 10 seconds
their mischievous giggles as they scurry away
Jude's intense stare straight into the camera
Trivia:
VoicePlay originally recorded this song for their 2012 Disney album, "Once Upon An Ever After".
This is the second of four Halloween videos they've made using music and imagery from The Nightmare Before Christmas. It also happened to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the movie.
Each of VoicePlay's video projects is usually handled from start to finish by whoever does the music, but for this one they spread their duties out a bit more. Layne did the vocal arrangement, while Geoff handled the video production process.
The guys are once again representing characters from the original movie — J.None is the wolfman, Eli is the mayor of Halloween Town, Geoff is one of the vampires, Earl is the behemoth, Layne is Lock, and the trick-or-treater is dressed as Jack.
The YouTube description contains another important safety tip — "There is only one Earl Elkins and he is not exactly human. Do NOT try to smash YOUR skull-meat with an axe… it will hurt."
The filming process for this video spanned two days — one for the framing scenes and the start of the singing, and another for their monster morphing.
The full transformations took more than 12 hours because of the extensive prosthetic makeup involved, not to mention contact lenses and costume changes. Their shot list was "the spreadsheet from hell" by necessity. Once a step in someone's monster makeup was added, it couldn't be taken off until the end.
The impressive makeup and prosthetics were designed by Andy Wright and Lia Forestner from Makeup & Creative Arts.
One of the trickiest parts of the makeup process was the fact that Layne turned out to be very ticklish when it came to being airbrushed and had trouble sitting still.
Among the carvings in the jack-o-lantern tower are an Oogie Boogie face, a Jack Skellington face, and a VoicePlay logo.
There was also a hidden bottle of Diet Mountain Dew on the back side for emergency high tenor hydration.
The onesies Eli and Earl are wearing at the beginning are references to their respective roles in "The Chicken Song".
Geoff's dragon onesie made another appearance four years later in a short of "I Put A Spell On You", dueting with Winifred Sanderson from PattyCake's Hocus Pocus videos.
The group created individual character posters in the style of Stranger Things to promote the video on social media.
The jowled prosthetic was added to the MCA / Morphstore collection as a custom item, with Eli as the model and the more generic product name of "fat boy".
The trick-or-treater is Layne's nephew, Jude. Though the over-the-shoulder shot of him knocking on the door is actually Kathy wearing the top of the costume and kneeling on the stoop. Apparently giving a young child lots of candy and then trying to get him to do something slowly isn't the best plan.
J.None had a late-night gig booked after the shoot, and was still wearing parts of his costume when he rushed out to get to that.
Rek Dunn, the guys' longtime friend and production collaborator, made a behind-the-scenes video as a project for a continuing education course he was taking.
youtube
The Makeup and Creative Arts team also made a behind-the-scenes video focused on the prosthetics processes.
youtube
Some aspects of the makeup made it a little difficult to enunciate. (Good thing their audio was prerecorded.)

tuesday again halloween problems (10/31/2023)
not quite an "oops all friends" edition but this edition heavily advised by viewers like you. thank you!
listening
mcr's blood, for seasonal reasons. spotify
Father Finlee by Spence Hood and Justin Ray Stringer is my new favorite song, a spooky prison? folk ballad? elements of the work song and dirge about it. rounds are underutilized in modern music imo.
Finlee played that guard like a fiddle Turned his own fears into a honing missile “Father can you save my soul…” “Well, first you gotta bring me a little C4...”
usually when a song intrigues me like this i try to find interviews or breakdowns of samples or something, but i am coming up flat empty. @dying-suffering-french-stalkers tasting notes: "Volga Boatmen, maybe, but by way of like...1950s/60s Disney choruses? Like Grim Grinning Ghosts?" spotify

reading
somewhat horrifying but unsurprising article about how companies who want (or want to keep) governments contracts can buy out entire DC Metro stations' adspaces. via @andmaybegayer i think?
The Pentagon station, a prime target for reaching DOD staffers, was one of a kind. The Pentagon is the most expensive station to “dominate” according to Outfront Media data which I obtained, even though it has substantially fewer riders than some of the others. Advertising to the 665,786 commuters estimated to visit the Pentagon station in a four week period costs $198,000 (about 30 cents per commuter), before fees. Yet in Gallery Place-Chinatown, a station in downtown DC farther away from government buildings, it costs only $120,000 to reach more than three times as many people (5 cents per commuter).
it is difficult to stress how uncooperative miss mackintosh was during this book's photoshoot. this is genuinely the best one.
i did not enjoy and did not finish Roshani Chokshi's 2018 queer magical intrigue and heist caper in belle epoque france, first in a trilogy. i think there is a mismatch between concept and execution here. i originally had a rather long paragraph about how i'd be interested in a non-new-adult book from her, but after checking her website and seeing that she mostly writes midde-grade and YA, and classifies this book as YA (which doesn't really make sense to me, i think everyone in the core crew can legally drink and i think what i read from this book fits better in New Adult) and has a forthcoming adult book i am not interested in, i think she is simply not an author for me. i reevauated this book with YA in mind, but i think teens deserve books with sophisticated writing and good execution too!
this had a really killer hook but the worldbuilding comes very in thick and fast during the first quarter of the book i read, and felt a little dorling kindersley (here is an eye of horus! on a chinese compass! with a sumerian cipher!). the magical system chokshi uses is novel in its heavy reliance on physical objects and like, countermeasures and counterspells? we get little hints of it as a global system, and it feels very analogous to The Power Of The Computer. a lot of it is based on creation of various physical objects, some of it is mind-based, there are the equivalent of magical stone faraday cages. the macguffin is like. what if a major internet exchange was an object you could carry around.
this magic system is so interesting it makes it disappointing and difficult to break down the distinction between "i don't think the soft-skill worldbuilding through connections and loyalties of characters is that well executed in these first hundred pages" and "hate this specific literary device". we are dropped into a heist at a magical auction where the many magical representatives are attending and rapidly rush through a lineup. this would be a really fun movie or other visual setpiece with intricate costuming choices, but it's hard to show and not tell a complex system of combined familial/cultural/nation-state houses of magic with backstabbing politics when you are rushing through a very time-limited heist. i know that it's the first in a trilogy, but the sheer number of factions and names is very large for a ~400 page trilogy entry. if this were a fucking doorstopper of a series i would have more faith that all will be eventually explained and i will eventually be able to distinguish them all, but i truly don't think she has the pages to do that.
the book's most frequent reviewer praise is that most of the core (but still! very wide! there are so many goddamn names!) cast are colonized or otherwise oppressed people, and i must give this book props for including a bisexual man in the ragtag crew. i read up to the first hundred pages to the first twist, and when the person who joins them at the twist has a voice that is not distinct from the existing gang’s, who are already not distinct from each other, i put the book down. a brief excerpt that does not serve this point very well but serves the following paragraph's point
this book felt like someone describing their dnd campaign to me. people on goodreads do love this book so i'm sure it does eventually deliver on the heist and found family aspects, but it's simply not for me.
bought this here in houston over the summer ( i think) not sure where

watching
House on Haunted Hill (1959, Castle). this was so charming!!!
"it’s a pity you didn’t know when you started playing murder…that i was playing too." vincent price truly is that bitch. his scenes with his fourth wife in the film, carol ohmart, are electric. they hate each other so much. they've tried to kill each other so many times. she laughs when he reminds her how she poisoned him with arsenic. the sex has got to be insane.
this is a public domain movie that's embedded in its own wikipedia page, lol, but there are various restorations of varying quality floating around.
youtube
the exterior shots of the "old, ugly, moldering house" are the frank lloyd wright ennis house in LA, which made me shriek bc it is a famously light/airy/sundrenched building. (exterior wikipedia, interiors here).
thank u @americanwwhore for logging it on letterboxd recently and making me go "oh hey i should watch that too"
-
playing
not technically fallow but i don't have an interesting story to tell about how i'm trying to get a specific set of genshin impact achievements
-
making
hey remember this baby blanket? i also forgot about it but now we’re up to 7/10 repeats. i may actually get this out before the child turns one
every time i make these sheet pan chicken thighs i arrange them like the isle of man coat of arms bc it amuses me. had to really mangle them to get a good temp reading but i have not yet given myself food poisoning here (fingers remain crossed).

About the Author
_______________________________
“愛している独り泣き喚いて. “
Hey everyone!
Just wanted to add a little post about me since I lowkey noticed I’m kinda ambiguous as hell so here’s if you wanna know a bit about the author of your favorite stories!
Name/s: Jaz, Jazjel
Pronouns: She/Her
ENFP!!
Hobbies: I write a ton, a draw a ton, I paint for local galleries and I love listening to music 24/7
Favorite music genre/s: scene emo, screamo, metal, nu-metal, occasional japanese indie and rock music.
Favorite bands/musicians: oisiclemelonpan, mitski, pierce the veil, falling in reverse, against the fate, rage against the machine, autopsy, cannibal corpse, nirvana, malice mizer, and sheena ringo.
Favorite songs rn: look at the see(oisiclemelonpan), breed(nirvana), crime and punishment(sheena ringo), ma cherie(malice mizer)
Favorite movies: liverleaf(2018), sleeping beauty(1959), ginger snaps(2000), scream(1996), halloween(1978).
Favorite movie genre/s: horror, psychological horror, campy horror is also a fav, and I love disney movies if that’s a genre in itself😭
“Can I interact with you?”: Yea! Totally! Just if it’s through inboxes I apologize if I don’t respond to you! I mostly forget or simply don’t know how to reply qwqq
“Are requests open?”: Not yet unfortunately qwq I wanna try to finish up three stories u have or at least finish two of them first before opening requests. I will announce it once I do though!
“When do you post?”: I post fics whenever I can, I try to be free with what I want to write, when, and how I want to write it so I don’t get stuck in writing block purgatory too fast for too long.
“Will you be continuing previous series that haven’t been updated in awhile?”: YESSS I WILL!! As mentioned I mostly work at my own pace but I do always keep in mind if you guys are basically begging for the next part of a story!!
A little bit about my writing style:
If any of you have ready any of my stories it is kinda obvious that they are VERY LONG most of the time.
I hardly ever do headcanons but if the time calls for it or if I’m doing requests and someone asks for that specifically then I will of course do what is asked :>
I do have a habit of making oneshots into ongoing stories but I do intend in simply making oneshots or two parts more often rather than series.
———————————————-
Thank you for checking this out! If you have any questions or want to know more about me or about my writing then feel free to ask!

Voiceplay Visuals MASTERPOST
Just in case there's a specific post you wanna find and don't wanna go scrolling through the whole tag (I have also made a masterpost for Voiceplay-adjacent Visuals, and will be making a main navigation post listing all the tags I use - better late than never, right?). Posts are grouped here based on the release year of the original video they focus on (and of course listed chronologically within those groups), but note that not all the posts were made 100% in order (e.g. my first was for This Is Halloween, and the Christmas posts I did a lot later on than most of the rest).

So yeah... That totally unnecessary Nelson Peltz proxy fight saga of current-day Disney is finally over.
Thank goodness. Peltz seemed like he was acting on behalf of former Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, another guy who is bad news bears to say the least. Peltz just looked like another old man who plays to the crowd that loves to call everything "woke". While it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that The Walt Disney Company is having some trouble across various divisions, their solution wasn't even a solution. Nothing remotely near that.
Interestingly, Disney finally released their first *new* theatrical movie this year, a $30m prequel to THE OMEN that got solid reviews but struggled on opening weekend for whatever reason. It's looking to perform more like last year's new EXORCIST movie than 2018 HALLOWEEN (both films directed by David Gordon Green), I guess not all horror legacy sequels (lega-sequels) are destined to make coin. No matter, $30m isn't steep, it should make it back eventually if not in theaters. It's a 20th Century Studios movie, so it's no big deal really.
Weirdly, POOR THINGS is one of their few box office successes released over the past 12 or so months, outside of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 and - by a hair - ELEMENTAL. 20th kinda came to the rescue there, too: A HAUNTING IN VENICE doubled its budget, THE BOOGEYMAN did pretty good.
All I know is, Disney's probably never going to relive 2019 again... And I feel like they keep trying to make that year happen again... But it won't, because that was a case of the planets freakin' aligning...
I extend that to the 2010s in general, honestly, but I'll focus on 2019...
That year saw the billion-dollar releases of - in order: CAPTAIN MARVEL, AVENGERS: ENDGAME, ALADDIN, TOY STORY 4, THE LION KING, FROZEN II, and THE RISE OF SKYWALKER... They got a moderate success out of the MALEFICENT sequel that year, too, while the live-action DUMBO didn't recoup its - ironically - massive budget. (The original 1941 DUMBO was a low-budget picture belted out during the war.) Some 20th titles came out that year, too, most of them not doing great, like the X-Men movie DARK PHOENIX and Blue Sky's penultimate SPIES IN DISGUISE (I call it penultimate because I consider NIMONA a partial Blue Sky movie, their swan song).
Even then, that was a year to die for. But that's the rub... ENDGAME was the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's whole Infinity Saga. 11 years in the making, it's astounding it was able to have juice for that long! Yes, yes, I know, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME was the *actual* end of Phase 3... That functions more like an epilogue, while ENDGAME was the big finale event everyone waited for... and of course, CAPTAIN MARVEL benefited greatly from being the movie that preceded ENDGAME. By less than two months... TOY STORY 4 was locked to be big, because TOY STORY 3 made a billion nine years earlier. ALADDIN and THE LION KING were remakes of some of Disney's biggest animated movies, and FROZEN II was a sequel to another one of Disney's biggest animated movies. RISE OF SKYWALKER ended the entire Skywalker Saga... And ending the main story of one of the biggest franchises- You get the idea!
Suffice to say, Disney's not going to have that year again. They'd have to acquire like another 2-3 franchises, and release their finales all during the same year in addition to two other favorites. The MCU isn't the must-see event with each and every film anymore post-ENDGAME, Star Wars' future is probably in serialized shows still, the remake well has run dry and all the biggest Disney animated movies were pretty much covered (SNOW WHITE - from the one that started everything - is on its way, but I see that performing more similarly to DUMBO and not LITTLE MERMAID), and... Well, animated movies that aren't sequels are more of a gamble nowadays.
But it seems like in 2025 and 2026, Disney's looking to keep trying this usual platter of movies that would've been a killer line-up in 2017. Not today. That's how I felt about their offering last year, too.
It's a lot of reliance on the brands. New Star Wars sounds like box office gold, right? Well, two new Star Wars movies in 2026 after all those movies Disney did from 2015-2019 in addition to what seems like a ton of Disney+ shows... And Grogu was super-popular back when he first appeared in THE MANDALORIAN back in 2019... Yeah, like, who knows how those will do... In addition to all the Marvel movies planned, not all of them are gonna get everyone packing the auditoriums - as we saw with QUANTUMANIA and THE MARVELS. (And on the Warner Bros./DC end, SHAZAM! 2 and BLUE BEETLE, even AQUAMAN 2 didn't make half of what the first one made, THE FLASH fell sharply after its opening.)
And then you have the animated sequels, which seem like safe bets. Disney only missed with Pixar's LIGHTYEAR, which was a spin-off that went a totally different direction that seemed to have alienated the audiences that made all the TOY STORY movies the big hits that they were. TOY STORY 5 likely does way better than that, but I expect it to be a box office come down from the last two. It would have to have a real banger story, I feel, to get people to keep coming. I think MOANA 2, ZOOTOPIA 2, and FROZEN III - all from Disney Animation - are locked to at least open big. If they're very unsatisfactory movies to the public - like STRANGE WORLD and WISH were, then they have weak legs... And smackdab between this sequel-frenzy is one original Pixar movie: Space adventure ELIO.... Which got delayed, supposedly because it was a big mess and it needed another year and a half to be reconfigured. Not that that really means anything, but it's sure to balloon its probably already-big budget. ELEMENTAL had to climb and climb to somewhat eke out a profit, ELIO might have even more trouble as an original movie. It's also not known what Pixar's other 2026 movie is opposite TOY STORY 5, though I suspect it is another original, which will make it stick out as well. WDAS' original movies seem missing in action at the moment.
20th Century Studios and Searchlight continue to have the interesting stuff, which I think will last longer than more Marvel and Star Wars movies. Both studios really did become a replacement for Disney's former adult movie label Touchstone, didn't they? And they too have their franchise biggies, more for Disney, with the likes of PLANET OF THE APES and ALIEN... Whose new installments come out this year and are sure to do okay. Plus, more AVATAR... And yet those franchise don't feel - to me - as overdone as Star Wars and the MCU. It's been 7 years since the last APES and ALIEN movies, weirdly enough (WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES and ALIEN: COVENANT), and AVATAR took a long break before returning with a cluster sequels all reasonably spaced out from one another. PREDATOR/PREY looks to keep going. I also wonder if future KINGSMAN movies are still in play.
Again, it's the little stuff that matters, because wells always run dry... And I think that's Disney's problem at the moment, ditto them playing things way too safe in other areas... I've said that before, but they - specifically on the "Walt Disney Pictures" end - need to just let loose and let a filmmaker just make something dynamic and cool and new. Something that takes the audience completely by surprise, not just another "Disney movie". Something like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. And make more smaller movies, too, and not relegate them to streaming. Little movies like THE PRINCESS DIARIES, HOLES, etc. We're in that scene in RATATOUILLE again where the patrons of Gusteau's ask if there's anything *new* on the menu...
The time is now, Disney. With a new head of your live-action division, let's see what you've got. We're past calendar years locked and loaded with 8 tentpole movies...

top five fic titles you haven't used yet; top five worst adaptations or reboots
ask me my top fives!
top five unused fic titles:
click the pieces into sharp arrangements
what would an angel say? (the devil wants to know)
memories are films about ghosts
searching through thrift store jungles
your stories ring of perjury
top five worst adaptations/reboots(/remakes):
Going with the first few things that pop into my head.
I think most reboots/remakes of horror movies from the 80s are bad and unnecessary. Sometimes it’s because the original isn’t great - Prom Night (1980) is not my jam; Prom Night (2008) is somehow worse! Sometimes it’s because the original is good enough that it doesn’t need a remake, especially one so subpar - Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) vs Carrie (2013); Black Christmas (1974) is great so what the hell happened with Black Christmas (2006, 2019)? And sometimes it’s because certain movies really work for that decade and either don’t translate to a modern day setting or there’s nothing that putting it in a modern day setting will add to the story - John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978) works because it’s so atmospheric and he knew how to light a movie so you could actually SEE what was happening; Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007) is so terrible in so many ways, but mostly because I don’t need or care about Michael Myers’ tragic backstory; David Gordon Green’s Halloween (2018) reboot/remake trilogy thing said nothing new but annoyed me plenty AND killed off Judy Greer AND I couldn’t see shit so what was the point? Horror remakes: just don’t do them.
Almost every time they take an animated Disney movie and turn it into an uninspired live action and/or photorealistic live action movie, I’m not into it. It’s never as vibrant, it’s never as fun, sometimes they miscast SO badly (sorry Emma Watson) - use your Disney+ subscription to watch 2D animation like the universe intended. The Lion King animated movie is gorgeous; The Lion King photorealistic movie looks like mud.
I’m not saying that the original Gossip Girl on the CW was a work of art (I’m not saying the first season was not a work of art either though), but it wasn’t as boring as the HBOMax reboot. Truly, no one was likable on that show and they made Luke Kirby a creep! No one asked for this!
Long before we had Marvel/superhero fatigue, 20th Century Fox made the first X-men movie with the positively inspired casting choices of Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellan and I loved it! Even X2 was fun. (X3 went off the rails and was bad.) Ten years later and a solo Wolverine movie in between, they decided to soft reboot the franchise with those First Class movies and you know what? They shouldn’t have. Except for one or two moments here and there, those movies are all pretty awful. I’m not sure how you can mess up the Days of Future Past storyline that badly or cast Oscar Isaac only to make him a member of the blue man group, but they should all be ashamed. I still maintain that the most worthwhile X-Men adaptation in media is the animated series from the 90s.
I don’t know if this qualifies as a soft reboot but when Fox brought The X-Files back in 2016, it was a lesson in “be careful what you wish for because it’s going to suck.” Except I didn’t wish for this because I watched the second movie and it sucked so I was completely fine with never getting more new episodes again. What we got was Scully whispering a lot, some half-assed search for William that I was not invested in (they spent nine seasons denying Mulder and Scully had boned even after she had his damn kid!), and monsters of the week episodes that were so uninspired that I didn’t even watch the second season of the reboot (maybe didn’t finish the first season of the reboot?). And now there’s talk of a Jordan Peele remake of the show to which I say - find something else. The (OG) X-Files worked because it was the perfect place in the perfect time with the perfect people and you’re never going to trap that lightning in a bottle twice so why try?

What Goes Around Comes Around (Villains Lair) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Through the first two years of their "Unexpected Musicals" series, PattyCake had accumulated quite a roster of Disney villains. So when they decided to start writing original music for their next video series, they convened a meeting of their existing baddies and invited a few more for good measure.
Details:
title: Villains Lair — s.1, ep.1 — What Goes Around Comes Around
performers: Michelle Knight (Evil Queen / featured vocals); Alejandra Martinez (Maleficent); Jaimz Dillman (Queen of Hearts); Helaina Wize (Mother Goethel); Navid Nowakhtar (Jafar); Andrea Stack Dunn (Lady Tremaine / featured vocals); Tiffany Trilli (Cruella De Vil / featured vocals); T. Robert Pigott (Captain Hook / featured vocals); Chris Ross (Dr. Facilier / featured vocals); Olivia Adkins (Snow White); Jason Tibbs (Prince Charming); Hannah Juliano, Randi Solomon, Martin Roberts, Tony Wakim, & Layne Stein (featured vocals)
written & arranged by: Tony Wakim & Layne Stein
release date: 12 November 2018
My favorite bits:
the intro narration beginning with "Once Upon an Ever After" 😉
that anxious heartbeat percussion line
Michelle increasing the frustration and grit in her voice as the Evil Queen watches "Snow Spears" flashbacks
each character being introduced in a way that reflects their personalities
the dramatic bass hits and drum cadence under Facilier's speech
passing the spell rhyme from villain to villain as they add components to the cauldron
the Queen of Hearts stomping across the floor in time with the music to ramp up tension before the key change
that fantastic final belt from the Evil Queen backed by lush harmonies that devolve into rhythmic laughter
Tony being offended that Layne even has to ask which villain is his favorite
surprise Ursula!
Trivia:
Jaimz had previously appeared in PattyCake's first two Halloween videos as Mary Sanderson from Hocus Pocus.
Alejandra originally played Maleficent in VoicePlay's video for their cover of "Once Upon a Dream" four years earlier.
This video was filmed in a rented warehouse space with broken air conditioning (in the Florida summer heat, no less). During the long overnight shoot, the cast were able to cool off in the walk-in refrigerator of the florist next door.
The song was partly inspired by "In the Dark of the Night" from Anastasia (1997).
Building the new set was a family affair, achieved with a team including Layne's step-daughters and Jaimz's daughter.
