Disney Television Animation X Walt Disney Imagineering Collaboration "San Fransokyo Square" Sets Opening Date, Confirms Big Hero 6 The Series Easter Eggs
After being promised at the recent D23 Expo, we are now getting an update from Walt Disney Imagineering, revealing that San Fransokyo Square is arriving at Disney California Adventure, August 31, 2023 as part of the 100 Years of Wonder at the Disneyland Resort.
The area will have some elements debuting in the month and a half as a lead-up.
During a PR Preview provided by Laughing Place, it was confirmed that the area will be featured with easter eggs from the various iterations of the Big Hero 6 story, including the Disney Television Animation's Big Hero 6 : The Series and Walt Disney Animation Studios Baymax! provided by both studios.
Starting in mid-July, you’ll be able to sample new San Fransokyo selections at Lucky Fortune Cookery, and the Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería will officially open. In the weeks following, additional dining options, unique shopping and more will be introduced as the transformation of this thriving seaside plaza continues through its official debut on August 31st.
When the transformation is completed, locations across the area – from the Cappuccino Cart outside the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge to The Bakery Tour – will be decked out in street art and colorful banners celebrating the Big Hero 6 team after their victory over Yokai.
The diverse array of flavorful fare in San Fransokyo Square will include current favorites and new creations inspired by Asian cuisine, as well as the Big Hero 6 themselves. Aunt Cass Café, the second bakery café operated by Hiro’s loving aunt, will serve dishes, soups in freshly-baked Boudin sourdough bread bowls and more inspired by Japanese cuisine. On the outside of this quick service restaurant, you’ll find a mural of Aunt Cass’ lucky pet cat, Mochi.
An old fishing net tannery across from the café is being converted to Rita’s Turbine Blenders, a giant drink dispenser offering delicious margaritas and icy beverages. This refreshment stand is owned and named after the repair technician who maintains the floating wind turbine, resembling a giant koi fish, that sits atop the structure.
Guests will also be able to meet with Baymax, who will talk for the very first time!
"San Fransokyo Square" is the lastest Disney Television Animation X Walt Disney Imagineering collaboration between "Mickey And Minnie's Runaway Railway" at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Toontown, "Aqua-Mouse" at Disney Wish from Disney Cruise Line, Passholder Magnets for Disney Springs and Disneyland with animations from "The Wonderful World Of Mickey Mouse", redesings from Paul Rudish and Asia Ellington for "Orange Bird","Dumbo" and "Figment", "DuckTales World Showcase Adventure" and providing redesings and decoring for the "Toontown" refreshment with "Goofy’s How-To-Play Yard","Donald's Boat",Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster,"The EngineEar Souvenirs Shop" featuring various Disney Afternoon characters and locations.

It's time for the 5th annual Magical Trash Year-in-Review, where we take a look at trash cans at the Disney theme parks and resorts worldwide. Yes, it's a weird idea, but you are going to keep reading, right? (View previous Year-in-Reviews) Some may note that it's been a somewhat rocky year for the Mouse, but trash can activity has been strong. As we've seen in previous years, this year's additions were primarily driven by attraction openings, including Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disneyland, the opening of the World of Frozen in Hong Kong, and the arrival of the Zootopia in Shanghai. Unfortunately, we also saw the fastest introduction-to-removal can timeline with the closing of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - which had opened just a year earlier at Walt Disney World. Over the past year, MagicalTrash.com celebrated the 1,000 trash can photo milestone (only took 14 years!), while adding over 100 new entries. This was complimented by 1,600+ posts across social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky. Posts were also added to Twitter/X, but frankly it's hard to continue supporting that platform due to its overall decline on many fronts (and I say that as someone who works in corporate social media professionally!). For 2023, Magical Trash tracked 16 substantial trash can design changes, a 14% increase vs. 2022's 14 tracked changes:
Added: 14
Historical Cans Added: 4
Updated: 0
Endangered: 0
Removed: 2
The US-based parks saw the most activity, with Disneyland Resort experiencing 6 changes, while Walt Disney World recorded 4 changes. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort both recorded 2 updates, and Shanghai Disney Resort saw 1 new addition. No notable changes were recorded for Tokyo Disney Resort or Disney Cruise Line.
Here's a detailed breakdown of updates:
ADDED New trash can designs that debuted in Disney theme parks over the past year
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (El CapiTOON Theater) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown With a movie theater setting, iconography is anchored by a popcorn bucket image with large “EC” letters.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (M.A.G.I.C.) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown Outside the attraction are cans associated with M.A.G.I.C. - short for the Municipal Agency of Garbage Identification and Collection. Now that's a group we want to join!
World of Frozen (Arendelle Crest) - NEW - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen The official crest of Arendelle features a crocus - a multi-color flowering bulb that typically blooms in the spring - and seen throughout the Frozen franchise.
World of Frozen (Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs) - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen Furthering the rugged forest theme of the family coaster, decorative Scandinavian folk art patterns are found throughout queue, with geometric shapes highlighted in red, green, and orange hues.
Zootopia - NEW Shanghai Disneyland, Zootopia A surprising entry to Shanghai's bland trash can scene, green trash cans with zebra-like stripes on the lower portion combine with a city emblem.
San Fransokyo Square - NEW Disney California Adventure, San Fransokyo Square The shoehorned Big Hero 6 retheme of DCA's Pacific Wharf gave us new cans that looked a lot like the old cans - but with bonus "SFS" branding. Ho hum.
Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Nature You can tell this is a modern Disney attraction because the name is an IP-laden paragraph. Lots of storytelling to explain "scenery."
Parkside Market - NEW Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney Probably one of the more visually-stunning additions in 2023, Mickey Mouse + mid-century design. Simple concept, well-executed.
The Villas at Disneyland Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel New DVC borrows much of its design from Aulani. Not ugly, but also not magical. Were these picked out of a catalog?
Pixar Place Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, Pixar Place Hotel The retime of Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel features trash cans very similar in design to those implemented at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Maybe they got a 2-for-1 deal?
Disneyland Paris Reusable Tableware Cans - NEW Disneyland Paris, Adventureland France's Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law is focused on phasing out improper disposal of waste. Food service at the French parks has implemented reusable table settings, which has impacted trash can design.
"Fantasyland 2" Backstage - NEW Disneyland Paris, Fantasyland A backstage can makes an appearance onstage as a support trash can from the “Fantasyland 2” zone, parked where everyone can see.
Pym Test Kitchen Food Waste - NEW Disney California Adventure, Avengers Campus After debuting combination food waste trash cans in Tomorrowland around 2021, Disneyland expanded the practice to the Avengers Campus at DCA.
Jollywood Nights Temporary Media Can - NEW Disney's Hollywood Studios, Grand Avenue Throw a sticker on an existing trash can and it's something new! Temporarily rethemed can at Disney's Hollywood Studios during a media event for Jollywood Nights holiday entertainment.
HISTORICAL CANS ADDED Retro trash can designs that were unearthed by new research this year, but are no longer in use
MK Main Street (1974) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Magic Kingdom, Main Street U.S.A. Early years of the Magic Kingdom featured very detailed trash cans on Main Street U.S.A, often in multiple colors. Quite a contrast from the undecorated brown cans used in the 2000s.
Farmer's Market (Late-1980s/Early-1990s) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Epcot, Future World, The Land The famed umbrella tables at The Land found their shapes emulated via the trash cans, which were primarily brown with light tan arches represented on all sides.
River Country (2010) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Walt Disney World, Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground 9 years after the water park closed, remnants of the ‘Ol’ Swimmin’ Hole’ could still be spotted at Fort Wilderness.
Mulholland Madness (2007) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disney's California Adventure, Paradise Pier Tacky theme was on-point for DCA 1.0. This green can with road sign decal found a home in Paradise Pier.
UPDATED Existing trash can designs that have been modified or revised in the past year
None for 2023
ENDANGERED Trash can designs that still exist, but will most likely disappear in the future
None for 2023
REMOVED Trash can designs that have been eliminated from use at Disney theme parks
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Interior) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser The in-wall trash cans for the 100-cabin Corellian MPO-1400 model Galactic Starcruiser were in use for just 579 days.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Terminal) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser You won't be needing to dispose of your garbage before boarding the MPO-1400 Star Cruiser Halcyon, as these cans will probably have a longer life than the hotel ever had.
One massive disappointment in 2023 was Walt Disney World's opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. Generic silver cans, thus reinforcing WDW's continual cheapening out on themed trash can design. Paul Pressler called and even he thinks you can do better.
Here at Magical Trash we celebrated our 14-year anniversary covering the world of Disney trash cans, which included keeping up with various salt shaker merchandise releases that showcase the iconic can shape. 6 new designs were released during festivals: The Dude with the Food (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Amazingly Sweet (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Groovy Garden Orange Bird (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Stuck on Imagination Figment (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Chef Mickey (Epcot Food & Wine 2023), and Spaceship Earth (Epcot Food & Wine 2023).
If you happened to be at Tokyo Disneyland, you could have picked up a mini figure version of a Tomorrowland trash can or a TDS trash can toy. In the U.S. you could pick up a shirt or water bottle with a recycling can image proclaiming that you "Love Our Disney Parks" -- Disneyland or WDW-specific versions. There was plenty of trash can auction action as well.
Thanks to everyone who contributed photos, visited MagicalTrash.com, and interacted with this weird hobby over the past year. You've put a smile on my face as we all follow this goofy passion. As it's impossible to be omnipresent at 12 theme parks and numerous resorts around the world, let us know what we've missed! Thanks for an interesting year, CanFans! - Steve Tanner, your Magical Trash host

9 Truths and a Lie: Which Tangled-Related Thing Has Bex NOT Experienced?
The truth revealed!
Seen the movie in theaters 5+ times
I have, indeed, seen the movie in theaters at least five times. I saw it twice when it was new, three times for special events at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, and three times in random theaters when Disney re-released it for a weekend.
Has been recognized by one of the face characters from previous visits
I’ve had this happen, and it’s a marvelous feeling. If you’re the sort of person who enjoys meeting the face characters, let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like them recognizing you. They light up upon seeing you the same way you light up upon seeing them. It’s like seeing an old friend, only it’s a beloved character. Anyway, it was Rapunzel.
Hung out with Zachary Levi for over an hour at Disneyland
July 15, 2017. Two of my friends and I had just finished day one of D23 Expo 2017, so we decided to go over to Disneyland to finish off the night. While we were there, Zac Tweeted that he was in the park, and to come find him, and would frequently update with his current location. We finally caught up with him in line for The Jungle Cruise. After we rode that together, we rode Thunder Mountain, then stopped and watched part of the Main Street Electrical Parade before he called it a night and sauntered off down Main Street.
Has multiple Tangled tattoos
I have two, right next to each other! They are, as I type this, the only tattoos I have (though I do want to get more).
Tumblr media
I got the top one first, and the bottom one I got with @kelseyfitzherbert the day after the series finale aired. They’re both on my upper right arm.
Has cosplayed as at least three of the characters
I have cosplayed as Rapunzel, Eugene and Varian!
Has Disneybounded as at least three of the characters
I have Disneybounded as Rapunzel, Eugene and Cassandra!
Got Mandy Moore's autograph
If you voted for this, you are right! I do not have Mandy Moore’s autograph!
Has been approached by series crew who knew me before I knew who they were
I have been approached by not only Ricky Roxburgh at D23 Expo before I knew who he was, I have also had various animators who work at Mercury Filmworks approach me here on Tumblr! It’s funny, because Ricky became one of my closest friends from the crew!
Had a private conversation with Nathan Greno about the movie
This happened! I asked him about some specifics about the movie and he answered me!
Spoke to Eden Espinosa on the phone for a few hours
For those of you not familiar with Tangled Talk with Team Awesome, it’s a podcast that I, @kelseyfitzherbert and @darkprince-eugene ran while the series was airing. We had Eden on as a guest for the episode of TTwTA that covered “Once A Handmaiden...”! In order to have her on the podcast, she needed to call us, and we chatted before, during and after the podcast was done recording! (I was 1 AM for her when she called in! I felt so bad for keeping her up so late, but she said it’s her normal sleep schedule.)
So, that’s 9 Tangled-related truths and a lie about me!

ok i'll tell u about elsa lmao. elsa may hannarose was born on the 8th April 1994, making her 21 at the time the story took place. she is the only child of elliot and ella hannarose, american, always has her blonde hair in a bun and loves vintage clothing bc what else. i also describe her voice as sweet and melodic so fuck yeah disney princess voice. i cant exactly imagine those qualities in an american/new york accent. maybe she adopted a transatlatic accent?
at the start of my book, she is very much thrust into the spotlight. as the owner of the cruise line she is the public face of the business and the focal point of the continued disappearance of hannarose cruise ships. the first ship to disappear was the hannarose sea, and her parents were on it, which is what left her as the owner to the company. not exactly a fun time to be forced into this position. but hey shes passionate and it is her family business and whatever floats your boat. she gets interviewed a lot by media outlets, because these ships disappearing are a huge deal. The hannarose utopia, which leaves sydney in may 2015 (yea i know,,, winter) is the main setting of her story, as she has decided she will quite literally sacrifice herself to figure out what the hell is happening to hannarose.
anyways our lovely trio zoe, eve and legend (yes, legend) knock on elsa's door one day and are like, we will help. elsa, unbeknownst to most people because she is a fucking good actor, has spent half her days moping in the hannarose suite, only leaving to elicit hope in which she presents herself as this confident woman who y'know, can show the culprit hannarose wont surrender. she also is a bit of a celebrity on the ship. we stan.
anyways with the help of everyones favourite trio of thirteen year old girls, they solve what is happening to the ships. it turns out rivial cruise line dark seas was jealous and used mysterious ocean vodoo to spawn an accident. i actually forgot about the ocean vodoo but its a huge plot point and the activation chant specifically targets elsa. also would like to point out that elsa solves the mystery and immediately becomes public figure elsa hannarose again. she gets out of the lift and starts greeting people
i also had this final theory that she, after the events of the book, keeps in contact with zoe and legend but suffers immense trauma from being elsa hannarose so she becomes very protective over the ships as a whole. lmao. i should do a mots deep dive. that would be funny bc it includes
a homosexual coded deck scene between zoe and legend
a random passanger rescue that only speaks french and is never bought up again
a food fight between elsa, eve, legend and zoe
a geography song
weird ocean voodoo from atala dark
a rebellion protest sparked from a pen
"update from the hannarose utopia"
zoe having massive main character energy and dreaming up half the clues, which ended up being a side effect of atala's powers
a weird secret organisation called langton
taylor swift references (i was 14)
". And no, I do not stalk Atala. It just so happens I know this stuff, okay. She has a biography on Wikipedia." (SPECIAL INTEREST ZOE BROWN)
the fact that the author of the book eve liked was just casually on the ship???
and many more
Hey Writeblr,
I have a very specific request.
Will you tell me about your old OCs? I'm talking like middle school/high school edgy OCs. The ones who make you cringe when you remember them, because they're so awful. The Mary-Sue's, the self-inserts. The ones you would never ever ever resurrect because oh my gods they're irredeemable. The over-powered ones. The dark-haired boys with crooked smiles and ocean orbs. The girls who are so not like those other girls.
I'd like to hear about them please! I desire to know them!

Didneyland Debut
Disney Resort #3 in the books. Still funny to me California came after Paris. Then again, had Covid not shut the world down it still world have been 3rd as I was training to run the Castle to Chateau (a half-marathon in both Paris and one of the US Disney parks in a calendar year). I guess I was just destined to visit Paris 1st.
Both Paris and Anaheim versions of the Disney Resort have 2 parks built in walking proximity from each other and a central shopping/hotel area. It's a great design if you are staying on property. The transportation within Anaheim on a regular business day was very manageable. Our hotel provided a heads up on the bus system which we didn't use the 1st day opting to walk to the nearest Disney parking lot (Toy Story) and taking that shuttle as many other local non-Disney hotel guests were doing.
The rides themselves for the most part were better in Disneyland except for Big Thunder Mountain and Jungle Cruise. California's Jungle Cruise was short. This doesn't make it bad per say but it makes it not the best version although our skipper was funnier than some I've had in other parks. I was pleasantly surprised for the most part regarding the resort itself. For all the heads up I got that Disneyland was small and both days were half days I really don't know what you're doing in the parks. We missed things and we spent FULL days in both with Genie+ getting us expedited access to rides.
Here's the other part of that...the lines in DL were SHORTER than anything we see in WDW these days. 30 minutes seemed to be the average longest time I saw. Obviously there were outliers but those notwithstanding lines were reasonable, IMO. Had we more time Genie would have been an after thought likewise to WDW where we have AP and can do a single ride here and there as we want.
For all the goods DL has over WDW their app and physical security are just awful, truly and abysmally awful. The scanners at the entrances are most likely from the original opening. Do the parks not share technology updates? I'm legitimately asking. This caused so many issues on run day (that update coming in a different post) and having to take things out of pockets, including my medal, was kind of embarrassing since I know there are better ways.
Also, the app. Why is the app so bad. You can't add friends/family without having to know their ticket numbers which is an incredibly cumbersome way to link your party together. That and you have to scan barcodes instead of tapping the turnstile. DL does at least use Magicbands so that's a plus over Paris. I'm assuming for the app it's a privacy law thing? I can't explain why it's so bad other than it's not allowed to have the connections allowed in other states. Even the race announcers talked about it on the stage. I love the mouse but I'm also fair in pointing out the flaws.
Obviously there we positives from the visit as noted above but let's see what else we enjoyed! The Incredicoaster was so amazing. Perfect theming and the queue video talking about the retheme was 4th wall breaking but also really funny. Violet seemed miffed and Edna was just taking it stride which kind of seems against her don't look back mantra. Honestly, the entire Pixar Pier was gorgeous. I got to see it at night and lit up my words will not do it proper justice but you can find photos online of it I'm sure.
Characters just roam around in DL and that was something that we're not used to seeing. At WDW those handlers are extremely tethered keeping everyone back until the character reaches the proper location for the official line to get their moment. I liked the random encounters we had and the characters just took it in stride. Maybe it's the culture at DL. Maybe it's just a different clientele? I never saw any issues with it in DL like I've seen in WDW. Then again, Photo pass was few and far between in DL as well. Most cast members took personal photos with your own phone/camera for free. Refreshing but also odd. It's not like Disney to miss out on a way to monetize guests. They sure as hell don't miss that in WDW.
Anaheim doesn't allow fireworks during the week. If Orlando tried to enforce we'd riot. DL was dumb enough to have a mug that said "It's all about fireworks" when they don't even have them. So dumb. If they won't do fireworks they should consider going the route of Paris and have drone shows. Honestly, the drone shows in Paris were killer. It was innovative and fit a culture that isn't obsessed with blowing shit up.
All the said I want to see if I can compare the parks I've been to thus far and update once park 4 happens. Which park would be #4? Shanghai is the currently leader. All because of Zootopia. If you didn't know that and you're reading this...you either don't know me or haven't read enough of my entries :P
Best of from my current experiences at 3 Disney Resorts
Big Thunder - Paris Pirates - DL Space Mountain - Paris (did not get to ride Land's version) Security - WDW Shopping - WDW Nighttime Show - WDW (Happily Ever After) Hotel - WDW (Polynesian cause Moana...) Castle - Paris Haunted Mansion - DL with Nightmare overlay Philharmagic - WDW Soarin - WDW (over the world) This is just one person's opinion but I'd like to think it's valid since I've done 3 parks and have seen the various cultures that go with them. In either event I'm going to do a post on the return of RunDisney to Disneyland. Make sure to come back and give it a read!

San Angel Inn's Queso Fundido Recipe: A Delicious Mexican Dish
Tumblr media
It’s no secret… San Angel Inn is my favorite place to eat on property. The ambiance, the atmosphere, and the food are among the best in Epcot and Walt Disney World. Plus, with a slow-moving, relaxing ride that never has any line about 30 feet away? More Delicious Recipes You Will Love: - Pumpkin Ginger Soup Recipes – Disney Cruise Lines - Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcakes – Starring Rolls Cafe - Ribeye Steak With White Truffle Butter – Le Cellier Perfect. There really is nothing better in this whole world than filling up at San Angel then rolling over to the “Gran Fiesta Tour” to take it easy. San Angel Inn has gone through a lot of changes over the years, including an extensive menu overhaul in the mid-to-late 2000’s. While most of the signature dishes made the cut into the new menu (Pollo A Las Rajas and Sopa Azteca), there were a few that were retired or made seasonally available to help bring the restaurant to a more fine dining experience. One of these dishes was the queso fundido. The collective mourning that San Angel Inn fans went into at the loss of this popular dish was undeniable. Pop through forums and blogs at the time it was announced it was retired and it’s not hard to find people begging for how to make this hearty guilty pleasure. I’m happy to say that the folks at San Angel Inn have always been happy to oblige on any recipe when they could, so despite retiring the dish at San Angel Inn, they were happy to share how to make the dip at home. And I wonder if the demand for this dish and the response of people when they saw it was no longer on the menu played a role in queso fundido finding a new home in the neighboring restaurant, La Hacienda de San Angel? I will say, of all the establishments I’ve gotten and reproduced recipes for, the folks at San Angel Inn are in a league of their own when it comes to listening to their customers. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they brought back this popular dish to their sister restaurant to appease the queso fundido addicts of the world (like myself). When people read this recipe, they’ll be over-the-moon at how ridiculously simple this is to make an appetizer this delicious. For those who’re making it in the style of San Angel Inn, all you need is two ingredients: cheese and chorizo sausage. For those who’re making the updated sister version as featured at La Hacienda de San Angel, you need to add a third ingredient… A dash of poblano pepper. Really, it couldn’t be easier. Cook, broil and serve with your favorite chips or flour tortillas. Keep in mind, this isn’t a dip where you stick your chip in and scoop out the cheese. Think of this as a warm spread, not a traditional dip. You’ll need a spoon to scoop it out and spread it on your delivery food of choice. Now, I think it goes without saying that an appetizer that’s made up of cheese and sausage is not a low calorie, low fat, diet friendly food. And I can’t stress enough, if you don’t really blot the fat out of the chorizo, you’ll end up with a lot of fat rising to the top during the broiling process. Really drain the sausage, then blot it with paper towels. Blot it, blot it, and blot it again. Then blot it again once more, for good measure. If you broil it and there is still a lot of visible fat, just let it cool slightly and blot it gently with a paper towel. I’m still dreaming about how delicious this dish is… And I just made it about 12 hours ago. I am in love with everything about this dish and it makes me so homesick for a riverside table in the shadow of a pyramid. Sigh… San Angel… In addition to the delicious food and recipes, Disney World is also known for its unique dining experiences, such as character dining and themed restaurants. Disney World Brings Back Ride Many Thought Was Gone for Good
Over the past few years, Disney World has overhauled some of its more popular rides in order to bring them more in line with the modern world. “Jungle Cruise” got a major update, for example, when the movie version of the ride starring Dwayne “The Rock”  Johnson got released in 2021. The company didn’t make a huge deal about the changes (as a lot of people get mad when classic rides are updated),…
