The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales

Tumblr media
I’ll drop the mic and just say it: The Bookwalker is one of the rare unique games I’ve played in recent years, the game is so successful at being a memorable experience for the player without trying too much or attempting to implement plot-twists here and there, I checked The Bookwalter after watching release trailer, and there was one scene that caught my eye particularly (which you can find below), if you played Disco Elysium you will recognize what I mean: the scene where we, as the protagonist, come to find the hanged man in the backgarden of the hotel we reside in. I am not sure if this was a nod to Disco Elysium by the developers, but it feels too much of a coincidence to happen. Even the dialogue window and character frames are inspired by Disco Elysium as far as it goes.
Tumblr media
Let’s cut to the chase, what’s this game about that I highly appreciate so far? Well, you’re an author named Etienne Quist and you’re banned from writing books for 34 years due to some disclosed reasons, we start in medias res, and before the beginning of the games, we had contacted with some people through our associates and this stranger, that we don’t get to meet in person, says he can help reduce our sentence by taking some chores and completing side jobs that he tasks us. Since we are unemployed, we also face the risk of being evicted from our cubicle-size flat as well, when you take all these into consideration, we don’t have a better alternative not to go along with this stranger’s jobs. The stranger communicates us through the phone in our flat, he calls us, sends somebody to drop off a bag in front of our door, we receive the door and bring it to our table. What are the jobs, you shall ask? In this world, the stranger sends us a bag containing novels, a compartment and some pieces that contain in-depth info about the authors of the novels, we are tasked with dive into the novels themselves, live in it, and extract specific items, objects etc, hence the name of the game, Bookwalker. The game has two different camera angles by the way: first on e is the “real world”, the world the protagonist dwells in, second one is the world of books. The first one is in first-person camera, whereas the second is in almost top-down camera angle. I thought “oh boy, this is gonna be disorienting for me for sure” but don’t worry you spend %90 of your time in “books”, in other words, you are not going back and forth so often.
Tumblr media
I wish to mention the setting a little bit: the game’s budget and development are mostly spent in “books” not in “real world”. There is no exploration in real world, only limited interaction with your neighbours in your apartment. You have a compact flat, and there is only two floors you can travel to in the apartment, you can deliver the bag after retrieving the item from the novel on base floor, then you return to your flat, sleep through night, you’ll receive a phone call, then a new bag is dropped at your door and repeat.
At first I was not certain if the books we will dive into are real books or made-up, out of 7 books in the game, I have completed two of them so far, and they are not real books. This made me question: would it have been spectacular if we lived in actual books, would that worked out at all? The developers can have more freedom by creating made-up books instead of taking an actual book and try to make it work that way, still it could have been a unique experience. The books we find ourselves in are linear, they are not open-world, and you can feel the intended flow of the game as you progress. The first book is “A Drop of Infinity” where we are asked to extract a magical potion, we wake up in a basement-type dungeon, we get to meet our companion, which is lantern-size cage that we name Roderick, who claims that s/he has read A Drop of Infinity fives times and knows all the minute details of the book and can be a help for us. We continue our journey with him/her on our hand, and we interact with it often, at every possible action. Not to spoil the books, I won’t go much into them plot-wise.
Tumblr media
The game has a mechanic that I was surprised to see: you can access your belongings and items in the books that you have in your flat. For example, there’s a wall that needs to taken down, Roderick asks us whether we’ve a hammer in our own room, we don’t. Then we knock on our neighbour’s door and ask them, he lends his hammer to us, bring it to the room, we dive into the book once again and take down the wall.
In two clips below, you can more clearly understand what’s going on:
youtube
youtube
The game has lite-combat too: this does not take up much of the game to be honest, let’s say, each book lasts around 60 minutes, and you will spend at most 5-10 minutes for combat. The variety of it is not diverse, you have a handful of abilities, heavy-attack, light-attack, stun and shield. These fights are not challenging and you’ll be able to heal yourself during the fight with food.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, the game has inventory mechanic with 4 categories:
Healing: you will be finding food such as apple and bread around for health
Craft Parts: you will need to craft certain items along the way, such as crowbards, shovel on workbench
Stuff: random, unneeded items, you will be melting them and redeem ink
Quest Items: specific objects that you will be extracting from the book as required by the mission
With a never-before-experienced approach, The Bookwalker is a must-play for all players who enjoy narrative-driven games.

The Long-Awaited Disco Elysium Soundtrack is Finally Available
December 24, 2019 1:09 PM EST
Developer ZA/UM has finally released the much-requested, three-disc soundtrack for their critically-acclaimed RPG Disco Elysium.
Disco Elysium has enjoyed high critical praise since its 2019 release. Most have praised the game’s story, excellent characters, and the way it gamefies choice. What doesn’t get talked about as much is Disco Elysium‘s soundtrack. However, that could be changing very soon, as ZA/UM is finally releasing it to the world.
The long-awaited Disco Elysium original soundtrack is here! And it’s accompanied by an art booklet. Three albums worth of music by the magnificent British Sea Power @BSPOfficial and five years of art by ZA/UM – now available. Happy Holidays! https://t.co/iMyGgxE02p pic.twitter.com/10Kwn5kh3Y
— Disco Elysium (@studioZAUM) December 23, 2019
Disco Elysium‘s soundtrack is a three-disc set from British Sea Power. That equates to 28 songs, which should give you plenty to listen to on your long trip back from visiting your family this holiday. Along with the album, ZA/UM is releasing a 30-page digital artbook. It includes in-game art and concept art from the many artists that helped bring Disco Elysium to life.
This is a great thing for fans to get during the holiday season. If you know a Disco Elysium fan, this would make a perfect last-minute gift. It also serves as a fun holdover while ZA/UM works on the console ports for Disco Elysium.
Disco Elysium‘s soundtrack joins the many other great soundtracks that came out in 2019. Tetris Effect just celebrated its first anniversary by releasing a soundtrack. We’ve also gotten new vinyl collections for Metal Gear Solid, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Bloodborne. If you’re a fan of video game soundtracks, there’s never been a better time for you.
Disco Elysium and its soundtrack are available now on PC. Developer ZA/UM is currently hard at work on a port for PS4 and Xbox One. Those are due to be out at some point in 2020, though a firm release date hasn’t been set yet.

DSOGaming – Here are our Games of the Year 2019
There have been a lot of great games for the PC this year. As such, and contrary to all previous years, we’ve decided to share with you today our Games of the Year 2019. In this list, you’ll find the games that DSOGaming’s writers enjoyed the most. Do note that this isn’t our “Top 10 Most Optimized” and “Top 10 Worst Optimized” lists; these lists will be published next week. So without further ado, here are our best PC games of 2019.
Chris Kountouras – Red Dead Redemption 2
My game of the year is Red Dead Redemption 2, simply because the game wipes its ass with every other open-world game out there. This Western ‘simulator’ provided me with a grand array of feelings throughout its very long single player story, and what a glorious story it was. Arthur Morgan might be the best developed character I ever played.
I laughed, I raged, I robbed, I saved, I killed and I died, time and time again. I lost my way an infinite number of times in this game. Going from A to B had never been so hard in a game before. There are so many things to do, that sometimes you even forget what you were suppose to do in the first place.
And now having the game on PC is a bless. Playing the game on sixty frames feels almost like a completely different game. The perfect gift for Christmas!
Happy holidays and merry Christmas DSOG readers.
Pieter Naude – Mortal Kombat 11
When thinking about the games I played this year, I noticed that most were either sequels or remakes for pre-existing franchises. Honestly, I wanted to choose my GOTY from new IP’s since our industry desperately needs some freshness with this sink or swim climate. As such, I decided that this had better be a sequel or remake that took its franchise to new levels. It had to sustain its longstanding identity, and yet improve on every single aspect from visuals to gameplay. There was only one such candidate for me in 2019: Mortal Kombat 11. Ed Boon and his team had made, in my opinion, their best fighting game ever. The fatalities had never felt more visceral, the story provided the perfect excuse to reintroduce some old-school MK, and the mechanics introduced a playing style that focused more on strategic fighting than lighting-fast reflexes. Truly an excellent accomplishment for Netherealm, and without any doubt the best I played in this year.
Spencer – Halo: Reach
I’m selecting Reach as my Game of the Year, it’s new on PC and the fact is this is absolutely how this game was meant to be played. A couple years ago Sega’s Rez came out on VR and I said it felt like Tetsuya Mizuguchi had designed this Dreamcast game as a VR title long before VR was an actual mass consumer product — but VR added so much to the experience that it made that title feel reborn.
It’s the same story for Halo, this is a franchise that has belonged on PC since its inception but was limited by the console hardware that hosted it so that Microsoft could use the strength it lends as an IP to move hardware. Understandable! But not so great for us PC gamers! Well thankfully Microsoft has decided the IP would be better off coming to PC as well as its Xbox line of consoles. Reach is the first arrival from the Master Chief Collection, which will include Halo CE, 2, 3, ODST, 4 and Reach.
The addition of mouse controls adds a fluidity that was never there on a dual analog gamepad and it feels like the premiere modern FPS franchise has come to occupy its rightful position on the premiere FPS platform.
The PC release, much like the MCC isn’t perfect. The compilation suffered from issues on Xbox One and I imagine it will on PC but it cannot be argued that these are some of the strongest games on offer in this industry and that this compilation is one of the best gaming values out there, ever. Some of the issues I’ve noticed on PC for Reach: muffled audio, crouch doesn’t seem to work correctly and occasional front end menu crashes.
In time I’m confident these issues will be ironed out but in the meantime this is a playable and definitive version of one of the best FPS games released in the last 10 years. Mouse aiming is a revelation, the multiplayer is excellent and the campaign is depressing and somber making you feel vulnerable and doomed even as a Spartan war machine. At the end though, Reach is reborn in our world as well as 117’s.
Here’s to Halo on PC, keep it coming.
Nick McCaskey – Anno 1800
Given the limited time I had to play games in 2019, my game of the year choice is less about a definitive selection and more about my personal slice of gaming. Therefore, the 2019 release I loved the most was Anno 1800, and my 100+ hours of playtime proves it!
I’m a long-time Anno fan, and 1800 was a homecoming for the franchise. It delivered the hallmark mix of soothing city-building, vast empire management, and complex economic simulation while also being the most graphically astounding and technically impressive entry in the series.
Moreover, now is the best time ever to play Anno 1800. The developers deserve kudos for steadily releasing significant patches to improve the game and add free features like a day/night cycle and much better empire statistics screens.
Another reason to jump in now is the Season Pass content is now completely released. I’m morally opposed to paying early for promises, but just last week I’ve purchased the Season Pass at half-price and look forward to enjoying the three excellent content additions to the game.
In conclusion, there’s a time and place for high-energy, scripted story games, but Anno 1800 is my fallback game when I need to sit down for a couple hours and do nothing more than leisurely expand my empire-wide bread production chains. Ah, it’s good to taste life’s simple production pleasures!
PS: As far as other “could have been GOTY if I’d played them” titles, I will mention Control, Disco Elysium, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. All three seem outstanding and worthy of consideration!
John Papadopoulos – The Outer Worlds
2019 was a great year for PC gaming as we got a lot of amazing games. And, to be honest, it was pretty difficult deciding my GOTY 2019. I really loved Resident Evil 2 Remake, Gears 5 and Devil May Cry 5. A Plague of Tale: Innocence was also a stunning title, and Metro: Exodus was awesome. Still, there was “something” missing in these games.
Ultimately, I was left with three games that were the closest I could think of as a GOTY 2019. These three games were: Red Dead Redemption 2, Control and The Outer Worlds. RDR 2 is Chris’ GOTY 2019 so I believe I should choose another game.
So, The Outer Worlds or Control? To be honest, I enjoyed both of them. The Outer Worlds is a great RPG that even lets you kill anyone and avoid combat via the dialogue tree. Contrary to Fallout 4, its combat mechanics are amazing and it was a truly amazing experience. Yes, there are some shortcomings here and there, but I really, really enjoyed it.
And then there is Control. I’ve always been a huge fan of Remedy’s games and despite a lot of players, I really enjoyed Quantum Break (I love “time travel” so give me more of these ideas/scenarios please). Control is easily one of Remedy’s best games to date. Not only that, but it’s pretty fascinating witnessing its older IPs, like Quantum Break and Alan Wake, being present in the very same universe. It’s a game you should definitely play as it has a lot of special moments, like the Ashtray Maze or what happens to Jesse towards the end of the game. However, its ending did not satisfy me as it’s undoubtedly building towards a sequel. And perhaps this is something in which The Outer Worlds excelled.
When I finished The Outer Worlds, I felt a weird satisfaction. I didn’t get any “The game ended? That’s it? It was really short. But what about this?” feeling. The game felt complete. Moreover, and while writing everything you just read, I was constantly recalling my experiences in The Outer Worlds rather than in Control. Therefore, my GOTY 2019 is The Outer Worlds.
Merry Christmas everyone and happy holidays!

Citizen Sleeper
Developed by Jump Over the Age
Published by Fellow Traveller
Release Date 2022
Tested on Xbox Series X
MSRP 19,99 USD
youtube
“Nothing comes free Sleeper, remember that.” -Sabine
That’s the mic drop moment in Citizen Sleeper, Sabine, who is a doctor in Bright Market, is not talking about a dystopia in a far away galaxy or time. Citizen Sleeper is set in a futuristic time and in a spacecraft in the galaxy, yet every single detail and character is relatable by us. Right now and then, in this moment.
Before diving into the game, I’ve read somewhere that “Citizen Sleeper is Disco Elysium set in space” and seen this game recommended in Disco Elysium’s subreddit, personally I would not go so far to suggest that this game is equivalent of Disco Elysium in any aspect. The scope and frame are really appealing, that’s for sure, and as a Disco Elysium worshipper, this game can find an audience, majority of whom have played Disco Elysium before. Most noticeable likening is the dialogue window, conversation is displayed on the right side of the screen and you select choice-based dialogues basically. The second one is that the game puts forward that this is a (post)-capitalist world and we witness the life and background of characters are scarred by everything suıch a world brings. Some characters are more willingly talking about their past compared to others and we can read between the lines even when they are not explicitly talking but giving us glances of their past.
Tumblr media
At the beginning we find ourselves in a scrapyard in a spaceship, we awake and Dragos, the seeming owner of the makeshift scrapyard, greets (well, ‘greet’ is a generous verb, more like ‘hey, you are finally awake, uh’) us with fatigue and disdain. We are trying to get our head around what did happen, when did happen and how much time has passed since we were conscious. We do not remember onboarding on this spaceship, and where are our mates? Why are we completely alone and a total stranger to his ship, named Eye?
We are directly interacting with the world through the map as a point-and-click game, the spaceship being the whole map. Navigating through the locations and finding your way is not difficult, since it is completely text-based. I will raise my suggestions and feedback about the map in the next paragraphs.
Tumblr media
You get to track one active mission, which will be marked and tracked with a yellow icon, popping up on the location to direct you. Of course you can progress multiple missions simultaneously, not tracking a mission does not mean that you cannot progress it. There are missions such as “Find a Doctor”, “Investigate the Wreckage”, “Gain access to a specific location” etc, though the map is not that huge, it is not that easy to pinpoint where to look always, let’s say for a particular person, item or a place without help. For instance, your very first mission is named “Survive” and you have to find a doctor because as a Sleeper you need to obtain a special medicine to properly function, and the game directs us to Bright Market, and once we success at talking to the locale, the location to the doctor unlocks on our map. These types of “go to the location and complete a side-mission to reach to the main person/location” missions are commonplace.
The game runs on a couple of mechanics, with which you can get familiar quickly: first there’s real-time interactions, where you deal with dice (the amount of dice that you will receive a day depends upon your energy level and you need your medicine to keep up your energy which decrease daily), cyro (currency) or other components (such as classified info, data that you can harvest by hacking and trade them), and there is cycle-based interactions (cycle means ‘day’), it is crucial that you check cycle-based actions each cycle for example you hack into Harvenga’s server and three cycles need to pass before you obtain any info or you need to wait at least a few cycles to receive your medicine from the doctor.
Tumblr media
As previously mentioned, you receive dice each cycle, and the number of them depends upon your energy level, yet the numbers on dice are random, you may get low numbers such as 1 or 2 or high ones like 5 or 6. Of course 1 and 2 do not put you in a disadvantaged position all the time, when you are hacking into the servers you are requested to put dice with 1 or 2. So, getting high numbers would not guarantee you a successful cycle necessarily.
Now I’ll expand upon missions, there’re always multiple active missions and with your limited dice you cannot expect from yourself to complete each mission, the game essentially presents you various missions and it is up to your choice how to progress your story. The story takes turns and you meet new characters as you complete missions and makes choices during dialogues. For instance, I frequented Overlook Bar a couple of times, then you meet the owner, Tala, who offers you a job at the bar, and after working there four times (by spending dice), your relationship with her gets closer, then you can help Tala build a distillery for the bar.
Tumblr media
The freedom in progression allows the gameplay to be non-linear and each player’s story would branch our in a unique way naturally. On the other hand, I got a bit stressed thinking and calculating in which mission I should favour, especially when I was running low on dice. This un-guided story progression did make me anxious, I wanted to know whether I was making smart choices and not wasting my time on dead-end missions. There’re some missions that would go hand in hand, when you complete them one after the other the progression takes pace. If you are not paying attention that much, it makes you feel you are not getting anywhere.
Character designs are top-notch, maybe it would not do the justice, still they can be described as anime-like. In case of environments, it is such a step-back compared to character designs. We never get a chance to see environments in person. We view the spacecraft as a map, and we don’t see the places physically when we visit them, therefore the overall design looks generic and uninspired. I would love to see Feng’s hideout, Tala’s bar closely. The thing is that obviously the developers put lots of effort into character design, I mean they look and feel original and sophisticated, but did not design any environment, or it was a more of afterthought. Perhaps this part of development got cut from the budget. We are experiencing the ‘environment’ through text-based narration and descriptions. I anticipated that we would see the environment in the background when we visit a location.
Tumblr media
Citizen Sleeper will take you on a journey where you get to meet unfamiliar faces, strangers, both hostile and friendly, you will be a part of their world, and they yours. This title is one of my favourite text-based games of all time, simply put.
