#Dirty dog needs to socialise

Fenrir is outside a music venue, alone in the dingy parking lot. It’s the middle of winter in paradise - and it’s snowed for once, maybe the first time ever here. He’s smoking, and has a guitar case over one shoulder. He’s dressed for a concert, leather and denim and fishnets, nothing to keep him warm - but he doesn’t seem all that cold. The middle of the night silence is oddly comforting for him, and he’s enjoying the silence.

Theres the occasional passerby, one or two giving him a weird look, and the odd gunshot off in the distance, the usual paradise ambiance. He sticks out like a sore thumb against the grey and white, a flash of crimson in the cold colours.

Grantaire stabbed his brush into the jar of murky water sitting next to his easel before dragging the soft tip across the canvas he had gotten so close to. His nose was no more than a few inches away from his latest sketch, a watercolour study in the landscape pictures he had taken on the last morning on the estate, products of a brisk, yet invigorating jog along the gravelled ascent leading away from the main house, up into the park and beyond the neatly planted forest border. He had run from his room at first light, earphones securely set on his head and playlist running, pounding against his ear drums, only to stop whenever he saw an angle or spotted a specific detail in the surrounding landscape that he wanted to reimagine later. These pictures had fed his artistic needs since they had returned to the academy and made sure Grantaire did not run out of inspiration between projects.

Combeferre had let him out at the shelter on the way back for him to pick up Adonis and spend some time with Number Nine; the deaf dog had stood wagging her tail the moment he had opened the door leading to the kennels, with Adonis perched on her shoulders and meowing out to him. He had returned to the flat late in the evening, too late to socialise with anybody, as he found Joly and Bossuet having left to spend the evening somewhere else. Grantaire had chosen to remove himself from one such situation and focussed instead on unpacking his dirty laundry, sorting the sketches he had produced and made sure Adonis settled back into the apartment. It had taken him a few days to get back into his routine.

We're not anti- crate

We're not anti-crate, we're pro dog welfare - if there's space for a crate there's space for a Doggy Enrichment Land! - Tasha Attwood (Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook, Linda Michaels MA pgs. 262-270.

Using a crate inappropriately or excessively can result in both mental and physical harm to a dog.

Inappropriate use includes keeping a dog in a crate that is too small, dirty, or uncomfortable, or using it for punishment or confinement. For example, if a dog is crated for extended periods, they can develop anxiety, boredom, and frustration, which may lead to destructive behaviour or even aggression. Additionally, if a crate is too small, the dog may not be able to stretch out, turn around, or stand up properly, leading to physical discomfort and health problems.

Excessive use of a crate can also affect your dog's welfare. A dog that spends the majority of its time in a crate may become socially isolated, emotionally withdrawn, and prone to depression. This can lead to further problems, including aggression, destructive behaviour, and reduced life expectancy.

It is important to use a crate for training and safety purposes, but it should never be used as a means of punishment or to replace human interaction. A well-trained and socialised dog that receives regular exercise and attention will not need to spend extended periods in a crate. When using a crate, it should be large enough for the dog to move around comfortably, contain soft and comfortable bedding, provide access to fresh water, have a fan in the hot months, be free from draughts in winter and allow for plenty of human interaction and playtime. With proper use, a crate can be a comfortable space for your dog to rest and a valuable tool for training and travel.

Did you know the minimum size requirement for the housing of a mouse is 250cm2 and 500cm2 for two mice? (1) My single baby mouse has 3500cm2 floor space.

Now when we consider this for a moment, consider how much larger a dog is than a mouse. The average mouse is 6.3 - 10. 2 cm in length and have a height of 3 - 5 cm. A Chihuahua for example is roughly 12.7 cm - 20.32 cm in height and 24.13 cm to 38.1 cm in length. So there's already a vast comparison between their sizes.

The small dog crate floor space is 2787.091 square centimetres and is barely double the height of my mouse housing, this means my single baby mouse has more square footage of floor space than a Chihuahua or any other small breed of dog confined to a dog crate!

This means my baby mouse has 712.909 cm2 more floor space than a small dog crate.

A rabbit must have the minimum floor space of 6m2, housing of a width of 2m and length of 3m. With an internal shelter that always has the door open. A rabbit has 60,000 sq cm of floor space whilst a dog still has only 2787.091 sq cm. That means a rabbit has 57, 212.909 sq cm more than a small dog.

I don't know about you, but this really made me pause. My housing for my baby mouse is bigger than a small dog crate.

Hopefully this example has now grabbed your interest. Now we can delve into why crates can be misused, abused and can negatively impact dog welfare and harm dog welfare and their emotions.

In the UK we have the Animal Welfare Act 2006 which states the five freedoms that animals have:

Freedom from hunger and thirst.

Freedom from discomfort

Freedom from pain, injury or disease

Freedom to express normal behaviour

Freedom from fear and distress

The crate must be big enough for them to stand, turn around and stretch out.

The temperature of the environment for a dog sleeping and confined to a crate must be between 10°C and 26°C. Free from humidity and drafts, well ventilated and away from heat sources.

They must not be left alone for more than 3 hours, they must have access to water, enrichment items, food and access to toileting.

How terribly sad, that in a country where animal welfare has a law that crates must only be big enough for this.

Let's look at the RSPCA charity standards in the UK.

Many of us don't support zoos, sea worlds and other exploitative means of animal containment. Many people probably sit their shaking their head at the Animal right exploitation videos whilst their dog is sat in a crate.

It's important to understand not only are crates far too small, but also how many hours a dog is subject to spending in a crate per day. Then consider all of these hours each day over their short life span.

We were all once puppies too.

Think about it.

All we did was drink milk, poop and sleep.

Our parents had to feed us, clean up after us, vaccinate us and keep our living area clean and hygienic.

They had to bath us when we got dirty and keep us warm when we were cold.

They had to teach us how to walk, how to run, how to play. They had to teach us to socialise, behave in public and they had to correct us when we misbehaved.

They had to discipline us when we were naughty, reward us when we were good and teach us to follow instructions based on key words.

They had to work hard every single day to make sure they could provide all our needs and, where humans are concerned, wants.

However, the huge difference between a human child and a puppy is what each one becomes as they grow older.

So…how come humans continue to have children while puppies continue to get dumped on the streets?

What if it were babies who were getting dumped everywhere instead of puppies? What if independent rescuers spent their days rescuing abandoned babies and appealing for funds to feed them everyday and to get them vaccinated? What if babies needed to be rehomed but no one wanted to adopt them?

Can you imagine what that would be like? A shelter with 100 babies. Baby food. Diapers. Babies become toddlers. Solid foods. Potty-training. Bigger clothes. Bigger beds. Walking. Talking.

Toddlers become kids. Running. Screaming. More food. Bigger clothes. Bigger beds. Books. Education. Toys. Toiletries.

Kids become teenagers. Education. Clothes. Shoes. Food. Teenagers become adults. Jobs. Crime. Living off tax payers. More babies.

The cycle is insane.

Puppies. Puppy food. Toys. Vaccinations. Warm cosy bed. Puppy becomes dog. Food. Toys. Treats. Vaccinations. Spay. Neuter.

It is human nature to be disloyal, to abandon, to neglect, to unlove, to neglect, to forget, to ignore, to disrespect, to hate.

It is a dog’s nature to only love, to only protect.

Just like a puppy, every single one of us were once puppies too. We are alive and well and happy and well-fed and successful and educated and dressed because someone chose to love us rather than dump us somewhere despite knowing the financial and emotional toll it would cost them. Dogs on the other hand don’t take a toll on your finances and emotions, rather, they profoundly make you richer in both areas.

It seems somewhat cruel that the world we live in chooses to reward and celebrate people and their accomplishments, along with our negative human traits rather than protect and preserve those we share this planet with who’s traits, if we allow, could teach us how to be better humans.

So the next time you see a puppy, remember that you too were once young and innocent and cuddly and pure and perfect. And that you’re alive today because someone loved you.

Maybe that puppy could use someone to love it too.

And the next time you see a stray dog, remember that they were once these innocent and pure puppies who found ways to survive on their own. They are tougher and smarter than anyone gives them credit for. Having the smarts to survive on their own doesn’t make them a nuisance. It makes them survivors.

Adopt. If you can’t adopt, sponsor. If you can’t sponsor, donate. Make it a part of who you are. Just like you, shelter animals need to eat everyday. Take ownership of that knowledge and make protecting and preserving life a daily mission. Respect their existence on this earth. Be grateful everyday for the Life you live and pay it forward.

If we know that all we accumulate on this earth during our lifetime stays behind when we leave, why do we hold on to it so tightly when we can use what we have to make the world a better place for all, especially those who really could get by with a little help from their friends?

How to feed a bird

Let’s start with a pretty obvious question in bird care: what do birds eat? Usually, bird seed makes up the majority of your little pets’ diet, and this is great for giving them a bunch of vitamins. However, be warned of dried, packaged seeds – these can be pretty low in the essentials your bird needs! Alongside seeds, your bird should be fed vegetables –especially the green variety. Spinach, parsley and celery are all good options. Birds can also have milk thistle, dandelion and fruit to keep them healthy and strong.

How to care for a bird in your home

As long as you know how to look after a bird properly, your home can be a wonderful place for your pet to live, flourish and fly!

✦Make sure your pet bird has access to bird baths or showers. They love water and it’s great for keeping them healthy and happy. 

✦Give them access to full sunlight and 10-12 hours of darkness every night. This can be made easier to achieve with a blackout cover.

✦Let them get some exercise. Use toys to keep them active in their cage and supervise out-of-cage play at least once a week. Make sure you choose a safe location for them to spread their wings and keep them on a harness if necessary.

Should you keep pet birds in a cage?

Part of learning how to look after a bird is getting them a safe, secure cage they can be happy in. This means getting one that’s large enough for them to move comfortably in – we’d recommend that each bird has a space big enough for 2 birds to fully extend their wings.

No matter how big or comfortable the cage is, letting your birds out of the cage as often as you can is highly recommended. Whenever you’re in the home and can supervise them, let them fly free. If you don’t, your bird will most likely become overweight and depressed.

Bird care tips for socialising

Most birds are very social creatures, so they’ll bond to other birds or humans. You can’t leave your bird on its own in a cage –it just won’t be happy! Your bird needs attention and love, just like a cat or dog, so make sure you can give it just that.

✦Try eating meals at the same time - it can be a nice bonding experience!

Having a bird as a pet is a big responsibility, but very rewarding too. Birds can make great companions and, if you look after yours, you can really bond and flourish together! Just make sure you know exactly what your breed needs and give it all the love it deserves. 

✦Replace the cage liner and spray any dirty areas with a bird-safe cage cleaner.

✦Wash food and water dishes, as well as bird baths, with an effective dishwashing liquid –such as Sunlight. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Make sure no trace of soap remains before adding food and water again.

✦Sweep the surrounding area to get rid of any dropped seeds or dirt.

Almost three weeks passed by. Harry didn't saw his neighbour...

Like at all.

Why was he so keen on seeing her? He didn't know. Maybe he was craving socialising with other people? He didn't know.

He was stepping out of his house barely himself now. Mostly working from home via zoom and going to studio just for recordings. He was bored. Like really, really bored.

But he saw her today!

She was going somewhere. Looking the same. Dressed in an over sized tshirt and biker short and a pair of almost worn out sneakers; Harry reckoned that was her staple look, that's all he saw her wear. Like Princess Diana, but with brown and long hair.

"Good morning." It was her greeting him this time!

"Good morning." Harry said. She nodded and walked down stairs. He was going out too so he followed her. He saw her talking to the people who lived in the house in front of their building with a grey Doberman, she was holding the leash. Was she really gonna walk a Doberman?

Harry never saw a small person like her to be walking a Doberman. She wasn't that tall. But he can't judge someone by their looks, can he? He watched her walk down the road with the big dog.

That was actually YN's first work in two weeks! She was so happy that the neighbours contact her to take their dog on a walk because he were busy the entire day. That guy was super rich, for all that she knows. He owned a very high maintenance dog. And he offered a fairly big amount to walk his Doberman, twice for the day. Luckily for her the doggo was trained very well and was very obedient. She didn't had much experience with big dogs. Especially pure breed dogs like this one.

The doggo was named Avery, she was the sweetest big creature. She truly made YN's day that day. There was a park near by where she took her to play. She loved dogs and cats so much! She could take this up as full time job and even work extra hours for free if she could. But she really needed the money. And surprisingly for her, animals really co-operated with her. There is no animal which was rude to her, or aggressive. She thought it was just pure luck!

Also she have never met a dog named Avery. It was adorable!

"Avery, come on!" She ran side to side with the dog, getting her exercised. It was a work out for YN as well.

"You are so gorgeous!" She hugged the dog. Avery licked her face, dirtying her mask.

"Oh no, no." YN pulled back. The owner gave her Avery's favourite toys, one was a tug rope thing, and a ball to play fetch with.

"Let's play fetch, yeah?" YN asked the dog. "Go fetch!" She threw the ball in a direction not to far in the open field. The dog sprinted and fetched the ball for the human.

"Good girl!" YN praised her with pets and scratches behind her ear. They played until Avery was tired. YN just had two hours with her before she had to return her. The dog really seemed to like YN, she sat next to her on grass.

"You are really a pretty girl, you know?" YN talked to Avery.

She really missed her dog. She found her at the welfare group she worked with. Begged her mother for days to adopt him. She took care of him all by herself, she fed him on time, took him on walks, trained him. Her mum just paid for the dog. She was in love with the dog, took care of it like she was his mother. And the dog loved her too. She let her little sister name him, who named the doggo after an animated bird, Rio.

Rio was a rescue dog, found on streets. Lovely creature. Loved his human so much. He never left YN when she was home, waited for her at the door everyday when she came back from school.

But YN had him re-homed. There was no way she could really take of him. She could hardly feed herself. He was the only man in her life who truly made her happy and never broke her heart.

"Come on let's get you back to your home, yeah?" She took Avery back to her home and went back to hers. The next walk is at eight now.

She went on about her day, working on her assignments, just sitting idol most of the time because she doesn't have anything to do most of the time.

At eight she took Avery on a walk, not an intense one like in morning. It was more of a chill walk. Even for herself. It was very quiet in her neighbourhood, but she also have a scary dog (who is the most gentle creature) so no one would harm her anyway, she was sure. Avery's owner paid YN for the day already, so she was happy. Genuinely happy. It was like she pet sat for three different people in a day.

She dropped Avery back to her home and went back to hers. Next day is a Saturday. A day off!

Not that exciting anymore. Everyday already felt like a weekend to her now. But she didn't had any classes so that was fun. She can sleep till late. She was never a morning person but have to wake up for the classes.

She was also very good student. She got a scholarship at this college she is going to, it's not the most famous and well one, but it was good. They offered her full scholarship on her performance. She have to keep up her grades in order to keep the scholarship or she'd have to either pay for her own tuition fees or drop out.

Luckily all her professors knew her. As introverted she is, she was always interactive in classes. She was confused herself as to why she could interact with her teachers so well and not her classmates. But she was always in her element during in class, mostly answering questions. And she was the favourite student among her professors.

She wasn't able to do well for two months, she rather found it worth it telling her teachers about her situation. They were surprisingly nice enough to let her resubmit couple of her assignments which would affect her over all score. They were understanding. She didn't had this kinda experience when she was back home in India. There teachers didn't gave a fuck about their students. It might be the case here too, but for her, she had very good professors.

She saw her neighbour at his door. He looked exhausted and down. Now, she always saw him like a happy and bubbly person by the way he'd greet her, though she found he asked way too many questions. A curious kind from her kind of species. She get it, her sister was the similar if not exactly the same person.

Should she ask how he is doing? He asked her how she is doing all the time. It won't be fair! But she gets too anxious to talk people. Her heart started beating fast. She didn't know why she felt so bad seeing him like that. Maybe because she understood how it is like to be exhausted? Looked like he was very tired, a guitar case hanging on his back.

She was a tiny bit happy that day! Like first time her being genuinely happy in four months.

"Hi, good evening." YN greeted him.

Wait... Didn't he listened to her?

HOW RUDE!

He opened his door and went in. YN stood there in confusion for a second until he really saw her when he was closing his door.

"Hey, good evening!" He chirped.

"Good night." YN said and went in and shut her door.

"Good— good night..." He mumbled to himself.

What just happened?

Harry took off his airpods confusedly and closed his own door.

YN found it really rude! How rude can he be? Right, he is a celebrity. YN have met many celebrities because of her mum and majority of them were rude and cocky. She doesn't have time for rude people.

Also, that made her anxiety spike to the rooftop when he didn't greeted back to her.

The next day,

YN woke up rather very happy! She can get a nice breakfast! She have her entire day planned out.

Should she spend her money wisely? Yeah! Is she still gonna go to the doughnut shop and get four donuts just to eat all by herself? Yes!

She woke up early in the morning and rushed to the shop, which was open. They were selling the take outs. Though she got her heart beating really fast interacting to new people (she always had her mum or her ex order for her), she still managed to get her order. The girl working at the cash counter was super sweet and didn't seem to judge her for her stuttering or the very audible lump in her throat as she talked.

Well, that kept her faith in humanity alive!

YN took her doughnut box and went back home. A nice cup of warm milky instant coffee and she's in heaven!

She's going to watch the Origin series on YouTube, maybe do a nice soothing face mask and take a big fat afternoon nap, go to grocery store in evening. Make herself a nice dinner and repeat the same for the next day, except not going to the store again.

But like always, universe really seem to hate her!

She saw him. Looked like he was waiting for someone. She hopes she's not the one. He doesn't know anyone in her apartment complex. She kept her eyes on her way and went inside.

Oh god! Why?

She was so looking forward to relaxing today!

She was so mad at him. He broke up with her. He didn't even show up at hospital or at her mum and sister's funeral. Almost all of her mum's co-workers came to see her and give her condolences.

She had the expectations that he'd at least show up. But he didn't. He broke her heart even more that way.

Her self respect was everything for her after so many years of people taking advantage of her. Of her kindness. She knew him too well to tell why he was there. Just by looking at his eyes for a split second.

God she was really in love with him, wasn't she?

But she was over him! For real this time. She didn't miss him, she didn't thought about him much from past two months. Her mum always told her, that people who doesn't respect you, or people who run away from you in your worse time are not worth your time and energy. And she stuck by it very well.

"YN, can we talk please?" He of course had to follow her.

"Keep your distance." She warned him and she jogged upstairs.

"I am keeping my distance." He said, "can we talk please. Look I didn't know—"

"I don't care, Veer. I do not care." She stopped in her track and turned around to look at him. "Leave me alone."

"I am sorry. I really didn't know about the accident. I was in Malibu visiting my parents." He gave his excuse.

YN didn't wanted to argue with him at all. She started walking back upstairs to her home.

"YN please can you listen to me?" He followed her.

"Fuck off Veer!" She ran up the stairs.

God, leave me alone!

"Alright, I'll leave. But at least can you listen to me once?" He asked.

"What the hell you want to talk about now huh?" She snapped. "Didn't I called you the day after? You want to clarify why you ghosted me? I don't want to hear shit from you, so you can leave now."

"I— I was not in right place."

"I am not in right place now. So fuck off and never show me your face again." She told him.

"Oh for fucks sake!" She sighed mumbling to herself watching her neighbour walk upstairs too. Why are people so interested in embarrassing her in front of other people?

Well, she couldn't give two fucks about her rude neighbour too!

She ignored both the guys and went back in side her apartment.

YN have mastered the art of dealing with he problems one by one by now. And she pushed meeting Veer, her ex-boyfriend, at the back of her head to deal with it later. She wanted to relax that day. And she just did that!

She went on with her day like she planned it to go. But she didn't take the afternoon nap she wanted to, she couldn't go to sleep. Instead she went to the store and got stuff for her house. She wasn't even surprised to see her neighbour when she came back home.

"Hey YN, hope you're doing alright." He said.

"Yeah. Thank you." YN nodded, struggling to hold bags in her hands and opening the door.

"You need any help there?"

"I got it." She mumbled. Harry walked to her and helped her open her door like last time. "Thank you."

"Of course." He smiled under his mask.

"And umm.. I am sorry for last night. I really couldn't hear you because I had my AirPods in." Harry explained. Why was he apologising to her? He was a good human being! He realised it this morning.

"It's okay." She nodded.

Harry didn't know why he just wanted to be friends with her. Was it weird? She didn't talked much, she was very mysterious to him in a way. He was curious and he wanted to be friends with her. And maybe he has got a tiny infatuation on her but it'll fade away quickly. He can at least invite her over for tea? Would that be good with the pandemic going on? He was being safe...

"Do you want to maybe come over for tea some day?" He asked.

YN never saw that happening. Means, she never expected any of her neighbours inviting her for tea. That.was weird...

"I don't think it would be safe for people you and people you see." She gave her valid and true explanation.

That's when Harry got the idea!

"We can sit at our doors. They're practically in front of each other." He have a great brain!

Their doors were right in front of each other, just eight feet away, two feet more than recommend. No one used stairs because there was an elevator. He didn't used it because he lived on first floor.

Harry somehow convinced his neighbour. He wanted friends. He felt very isolated. He was happy to have someone to talk to, finally!

She didn't talked much, asking a few questions here and there. Her answers were more calculated and short.

Harry noticed how she dressed really. Now that it was middle of summer she opted for loose button shirts with funky and abstract patterns. Today she wore one different mushrooms printed on the white fabric of her shirt. She had her hair pulled back into a bun at the back of her head, secured with a claw clamp. She had a very full and adorable chubby face.

She wore a pearl necklace!

He isn't the only one who wears pearl necklaces. But everyone he have personally met wore it because of him.

"I like your necklace." He commented.

"Oh thanks." She looked down at her necklace, her hand going upto the set of pearls.

"I have a similar one." He showed his necklace.

"Oh cool!" She was fascinated...? She looked surprised, "my little sister got this for me for my birthday."

She didn't know why she shared it. But it was very special for her. Her and her sister got pocket money to save up or to spend every month. Her little sister just got few dollars every two weeks, but her mum really kept an eye on her spendings (YN's mum didn't wanted her to feel left out because YN got her pocket money for using the public transportations to go to school and stuff). Also, it was her way of parenting. Teaching her daughter's how to make right decisions financially. Her little sister, Filiz, saved up all her money and secretly went and bought the necklace for her birthday. YN really loved jewelry, especially pearls and diamonds or anything that sparkled. And Filiz had that on her mind.

Both of them really had a great bond. They hardly faught ot argued like other siblings. Most of their fights were play fights. They were both little devils when together, making a ruckus around the house, being trouble to their mother. YN really loved her little sister to death. She never took that necklace off, it was very special for her.

"That's sweet." Harry smiled. He swore he saw her eyes pooling up with tears, with a glassy look to her pretty brown eyes.

"Do you have any siblings?" She asked, sniffling, blinking her tears away.

"I have an elder sister, she is named Gemma." Harry then realised how much he missed his sister. He haven't seen her in months! God, he can't wait until he can meet her and hug her and tell her how much he loves her.

"Haven't seen her in a very long time now. Really miss her." He shared looking down.

Both of them were sat just inside their doors on the floor with their warm drinks, which both of them made themselves.

"Don't you like call her or text her?" YN asked. She wasn't sharing anything much, but it felt nice to talk to someone other than her teachers, and that too during online class about studies. She found he was really sweet, like the cashier girl at the doughnut shop this morning.

"I haven't talked to her in a while. We had a silly fight over phone the other day." He said.

Gemma was mad at Harry because she found out a really old tale from their childhood the other day. The girl found out her brother gave her stuff to his girlfriends as gifts after she moved out. Little fourteen year old Harry gave Gemma's lipstick which she never used to his girlfriend. Gemma cried looking for the make-up everywhere at her mum's, Harry had it kept a secret. He didn't know how she found out about it. Yeah, it was silly. But Gemma was a tiny bit mad at him.

YN and Filiz had a small fight as well. Just before they were coming back from New York. Filiz ate YN's last bit of cake when she went to use the restroom. But they sorted it out and they were good. But that was one of the last memories for her with her baby sister. She'd do anything for that memory to be happy now. YN was still going through a lot from her breakup and she just snapped her sister for no reason. It wasn't a big deal now that she ate the last bit of that stupid cake. She'd give up everything just to have a back now.

"Please do call her." She advised.

"I will call her tonight." Harry told her. He was going to call his sister. "Have you talked your sister?"

Oh no!

"No." YN nodded in no. No she haven't talked to her. Not in five months now.

"I— she... uhhh.. she passed away few months ago." She shared. She didn't wanted to come out as rude. She didn't wanted to come out as the girl who doesn't talk to her sibling, the girl who doesn't care about her sibling, she did cared a lot about her sister.

That broke Harry's heart, it made sense why she asked him to call his sister.

"I am sorry, I shouldn't have asked." His voice was quite and gentle.

God he wants to talk to his sister now!

It was a natural human tendency right? He loved his sister so much, he'd so everything for her! And someone mentioning they lost their sibling, it hit him like a truck! He shouldn't be taking any time with his family for granted. And maybe that's what she meant when she asked him to call up his sister. Not necessarily meaning something would to happen to her, but it was always good to talk to the people he loved and cared for. It was so sweet of her to say that, he wouldn't have called her out of fright that she'll snap at him.

He felt bad for this girl. He knows how it is to loose someone really close to you. He lost his stepdad who he was really, really close to and shared an amazing bond with.

"Thank you. And it's fine really, you didn't know." YN nodded understandingly.

"I know it's none of my business, we hardly know each other. But I am always here if you want to talk to anyone." Harry offered. He'd be more than happy to help someone in anyway. He'd do that even if he haven't got his tiny infatuation on her.

YN found it really sweet of him. He didn't know her. But she'd rather not take the offer. She got attached to people really quickly, like she didn't with her ex-boyfriend. She wouldn't want that, even a platonic heart break scares the shit out of her. That's why she always chose not to make friends that easily.

"I appreciate that thank you." She half smiled.

"Do you mind telling me about your sister? I am sure she was really sweet." Harry said. He wanted to keep talking to her, even if he'd received one or two words answers from her.

YN loved to brag about how amazing her sister was! She was annoying. But she was her sister. And she loved her. She still loves her so much! An instant beam took over her features.

"She was." She agreed, "Her name is Filiz. She was a little annoying, I am pretty sure all siblings are annoying. But she was really sweet too."

Whoa! That was the most she have spoke the whole night.

"Yeah, tell me more." Harry leaned on his door frame, sitting like a little kid during story time at the library. He found her voice very soothing. Though it was a little high pitched. He liked her Indian accent, it was completely different than all the interpretations in the movies he have seen. She just pronounced each of the word very clearly, not eating up letters lile native English speakers or even like Americans.

"She was just ten, got me this necklace with the amount she saved up from her pocket money. Bragged about how she didn't spent it on buying stationery for school." YN spoke her concise yet a long answer.

"Awh!" Harry cooed. That little girl was very sweet. He'd spend his pocket money on shit he didn't even needed instead of buying a present for his sister if he were ten. He was very different when he was ten years old.

"Yeah." YN nodded staring in a space on the hallway floor with a sad smile on her face.

"Also, she really liked your song called..." She tried to remember the name of the song, "I guess it's called Adore something? The fish music video. She always had Mtv or VH1 channel on tv and waited for them to play it. That's how I know you. She wanted to go your concert this year."

It was like an unknown spirit got into her whilst talking about her baby sister. Harry found it really adorable how she talked about her sibling. Filiz wasn't allowed to use internet for anything other than her school work or to watch a few episodes of cartoons she loved on YouTube.

It stung in his heart knowing one of his fan couldn't make it to see his postponed show. He loved his fans equally. But he had a special place for all the kids who were his fans in his heart.

"She— she was very clingy. I can't imagine how she'd react seeing you here." YN added. Harry didn't know what to say to that. He just smiled and nodded. He'd love to meet Filiz after knowing this.

He had so many questions about the little girl. She was his fan after all! He was curious. And he wanted to talk to her sister. But he didn't wanted to overwhelm her knowing she lost her just five months ago. The grief must still be very raw for her, he guesses.

"It's getting late. I have work tomorrow." YN said.

"Yeah it is. Will see you around." Harry stood up after she did too, "good night."

"Good night." She smiled.

The first thing Harry did was called his sister. It was ten past ten for him and she was eight hours ahead in time zone than him. She wakes up pretty early, so she wouldn't mind he reckoned and called her instead of texting her first.

"Hey." His voice was very low and filled with guilt wnd embarrassment.

"Hey, you alright? You called this early." Gemma sounded sleepy yet worried.

"Yeah, I am alright. I guess." He said.

"Hey, what's up?" Gemma cooed.

"I am sorry I hid that I gave your stuff to my girlfriends after you moved out." He was so embarrassed, "I feel so bad now. Can you forgive me?"

"Harry!" Gemma sighed, "of course I forgive you."

"Thank you. I know it was very stupid of me. But I swear I stopped doing that after I started working in bakery." Harry defended himself.

"Yeah, it was really stupid of you." Gemma chuckled, "but I am not mad at you anymore."

"We're good now?" He enquired.

"Yeah we're good." She assured him.

"I love you Gems." He wished he could hug her that moment.

"I love you too, Harry." She cooed. "Can I ask you why you called to apologise at six in the morning?"

"I dunno..." Harry trailed off, "I guess I'll tell you when we meet in person."

"Yeah, I'll make sure to write that in my journal. I did not expected a call from you."

"I know, I am the best brother what can you say!" Harry bragged.

"Oh god you just apologised." Gemma laughed, Harry giggled at his own antiques.

"I'm sorry again. And I love you so much."

"It's alright Harry and I love you more." Gemma said.

"I'll hang up now. Got to go to bed."

"Yeah, see you soon."

"Yep, see ya." Harry hung up.

It felt nice.

It felt nice to talk to his sister who was a tiny bit mad at him. He hopes he made her day a little better. He could tell by her tone. Though he must have ruined her sleep, he feels at ease himself.

Virgil’s Book Signing

Summary: Virgil’s soulmate had left dark or disturbing thoughts appearing on his wrist so often he started writing story responses to them. Now releasing his third compliation of short stories is he meeting his most grateful fan, or his soulmate?

Virgil's Soulmate had been the one to first start him writing, and his family the ones who had, behind his back, started sending those stories to writing competitions. Specifically his brother Logan had done so, using the excuse that it could be a profitable skill if Virgil only went the right way about releasing it to the world.

He didn't really believe that and remained more than happy with his job being steady work in the marketing department of a large local company. Virgil didn't see any trouble in letting his brother occasionally send his stories off though, so long as he didn't get forced into writing anything formal and only had limited occasions of doing publicity.

It seemed easier than arguing with Logan on the subjects, or pointing out how elevated his anxiety was about anyone outside of his family reading the stories, let alone complete strangers judging them. Besides, the fact Logan somehow got collections of his short stories published, giving him an extra source of income as well as another excuse to make his brother help or just plain do his taxes for him. Virgil wasn't the maths whiz between them and definitely needed all the reasons he could to make Logan help with taxes.

Besides, it did give him structure when Virgil wanted to travel. He could see more of the country on book signing events and actually use up those holiday days he earned. It didn't make sense to save them constantly over the years, especially when it would help the books sales.

The funniest thing was when media tried to dismiss the times he openly referred to his soulmates thoughts as an inspiration for his writing. People felt that being open over what your soulmate was thinking about was an invasion of privacy, especially when you hadn't met them yet, but Virgil had had to write or panic about who they were.

He'd spent a lot of his schooling panicking over the thoughts before a school counsellor suggested writing responses to the thoughts down, or making some kind of story about them. To be honest, Virgil had agreed that there must be some kind of story behind 'what if you jumped out of a moving car?' being followed the next day by 'could humans learn to speak dog by sniffing their butts?' and had been curious over how he could answer that.

Over the years the thoughts that would appear on his wrist in the evening got gradually darker, more sinister, but Virgil had grown to enjoy the horror genre anyway, so attempting to write short stories for it had been a challenge he willingly rose to.

If only his first 2 collections of short stories hadn't done so well his book signings now had to be booked ahead of time if there was a Q&A section.

The thoughts that appeared on Remus's wrist so often concerned him sometimes. They were filled with so much doubt constantly, doubt over his soulmate's skills and their ability to deal with things, and occasionally just plain fears over something that's been in the news.

He tried to focus at least some time every day to just focus on sending positive thoughts to his Soulmate, hoping beyond hope that just maybe they would be the thoughts that got sent over that day. It didn't seem like Remus had managed to make that happen yet, and he dreaded to imagine that perhaps some of his intrusive thoughts appeared to them instead.

When something horrible or twisted wrapped itself around his brain, scaring Remus with just how dark the images he came up with could become, it could take all his focus up for hours or days. Reading different types of horror sometimes helped get the thoughts out of his head though, so he tried, kept an eye out for stories that seemed to match similar plots or themes to the ones his thoughts would repeat.

Being gifted a collection of short stories by V. Cowell had been a godsend a few years back, and even now, Remus would return to that original volume. With the other collection finally received as well as slowly accumulating the mixed collections that had one or two of V. Cowell's stories in them, it began to felt like his thoughts weren't terrifying so much as unfinished tales.

He wasn't alone in having these thoughts, just needed some guidance to find the conclusion of them and that was what he found in V. Cowell's stories. When he heard about the signing event being held by his local bookshop for a third collection by V. Cowell, Remus was already calling them to book his place at the event. He just had to meet the person who had helped him so much.

/Night of the Book Signing Event\

Remus was bouncing in his seat, clinging to the book and torn between immediately reading it and getting every memory he could of seeing V. Cowell. He'd never wanted to know about the writer but at the same time now he had been handed to chance to actually ask a question, or maybe even talk when he started signing books, there was just so much about Cowell he wished he knew.

“Good Evening Everyone. Welcome to our event this evening.” One of the managers of the shop had moved onto the podium they'd set up, waving to the audience while getting their attention.

A smattering of people clapped, while Remus just rolled his eyes, scanning the edges of the podium for a glimpse of his favourite writer. He was only half listening to the spiel the manager was saying, even less once he spotted someone hunching into a hoodie. They looked completely out of place, but also as though they'd argued with someone about what to wear because there was definitely a dress shirt and tie under the hoodie.

“So I introduce to the stage, Virgil Cowell, the author of the collection 'Every Soul in the Forest'.” Remus beamed, bouncing enough to get dirty looks from the people sat near to him as his hoodie clad man stepped up. His favourite author was breaking the unspoken dress codes and oh, Remus just liked him more for it.

The rest of the evening span by in a blur for Remus. He hung off of every word said, and actually got to ask what Virgil meant when he said the inspiration for his stories came from his soulmate. It almost made him dream that he was the one sending thoughts to V. Cowell when he described the stories as responses to thoughts that had unsettled him when they originally appeared. That felt like far too wonderful a thing to occur.

When he'd gone to get his book signed, he'd been giddy, only able to repeat a million times just how much the stories Virgil had already published had helped him. The writer had seemed a little stunned, but very grateful for the words, and the embroidered recreation of a scene from one of his stories Remus had brought with him. He hadn't intended to give it away, only just it as a grounding texture if needed, but when faced with meeting Virgil just saying thank you with words hadn't felt like enough.

He could do another embroidery anyway. The pin pricks even helped remind him of the real world sometimes.

Remus didn't even think to look at his wrist until he'd been trying to sleep, and finding himself too excited, for an hour. The words did anything except help him sleep.

'Nice Embroidery but this gratefulness for some stories I wrote really seems extreme. You okay, Bouncy?'

Either fate was incredibly cruel, or his soulmate actually, really, properly was V. Cowell.

/Back to the Writer\

Doing book signings was always exhausting for Virgil. It took a lot of energy to keep on socialising for people for as long as they lasted. By the time he'd had dinner and got back to his hotel all he wanted was to curl up in bed and sleep for the next day.

He still had to check his wrist first, know that his soulmate was alive, even if their thoughts rarely said if they were okay or not.

'It's truly V. Cowell. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Guess I can't just scream that at him. Have to find a better way to say... I have my embroidery with me!! That can say thank you, can't it?'

Virgil blinked at the words on his wrist, taking a moment to double, triple and quadruple check it wasn't his imagination that his wrist specifically mentioned meeting him.

Sometime through the entire Q&A, and the book signing afterwards, he had met his soulmate and apparently all they had wanted to do was thank him. That... That was the most wonderful, terrifying thing he'd ever heard. His soulmate would have some image of him in their minds when he probably wouldn't even...

Wait, the thought mentioned that embroidery he was given. He could remember the face and a man bouncing and hopping in front of the signing desk. The man who had actually asked how, rather than dismissing the idea that he got inspiration from his soulmate's thoughts.

The issue now would just be meeting the man again, when he only had the next day in town before travelling to the next event. He'd have to try going back to the bookshop at least.

He mentally  promised to do that while drifting off to sleep. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow he'd have his soulmate with him.

/Outside the Bookshop\

Virgil could see someone bouncing around the front of the store from the end of the street. Either his soulmate had come back hoping to see him again or just get contact information to write to him, or there were far too many bouncy people in his town.

“It's you!!! You did come back this morning! What thought did you get last night? Please tell me? Please, please please?” As soon as Virgil was close enough to be recognised the man was bounding over to him, seeming like the human embodiment of an over excited Labrador with the zoomies.

He had to snicker at the response, just pushing his sleeve up and holding his arm out. “So I'm guessing there was something in the thought you got which gave away it was me?” He muttered, wishing the quiet voice would stop them from getting attention, but knowing the exuberance of his soulmate that wouldn't work.

“Yep! You sent me a thought actually about me! Is my name Bouncy now? Do I need to introduce myself again? Can I run away and join your book tour and move in with you now? Or should I just become your biggest fan and follow you around without announcing that we're soulmates?” Bouncy definitely suited the man as he spoke a mile a minute, but Virgil shook his head.

“Let's go with an introduction and Bouncy can be a nickname for you.” He offered, before thinking the rest of the ramble through. “I can probably get you included on this book tour, but really don't want you immediately moving in. How about you finish the tour with me, then come back to sort out whatever things need doing for you to move to town? That'd give us time to at least get to know each other for a while, and give you a separate place for when we need space from each other.”

His Soulmate nodded, jumping forward to hug him for a second. “Fantastic! I'm Remus, and did you really write those stories to respond with my thoughts? I kept trying to send you comforting ones, but I guess I had no luck with that!”

“Great to meet you properly Remus, and well, I had to respond in some way to calm the anxiety some of those thoughts caused.” Virgil shrugged, but turned to lead them towards a cafe he'd spotted down the street.

Remus took his hand, watching him for a moment as though checking it was okay as he followed along. “They really helped me so much. I still just want to thank you for them more.”

“Given you literally got me a side job as a writer, I think we're even.” Virgil countered, smirking when that fact stunned Remus. He knew it would take a while to break the gratitude loop Remus seemed to be stuck in for him, but given it was his thoughts that were the inspiration, Virgil had the key to get through eventually.

tender culture is all this cottagecore, domesticity, uwu crap that is particularly prevalent in lesbian/wlw circles. like i’m all for fluff and thinking positively but tender culture seems to reduce loving women to a set of stereotypical “feminine” soft and gentle traits. like here’s an example:

“we are in a toasty log cabin in the woods. it’s cold and we snuggle under this homemade quilt with our cat and quietly sip hot chocolate as the snowflakes gently fall against the reddening leaves outside. but we’re safe and warm and loved.”

it’s that sort of shit.

like i said, it’s not bad. it’s just that it’s EVERYWHERE. hell, i follow that lesbian domesticity blog myself tbh (altho i does grate on my nerves that it’s constantly about tender culture and never about sex. and really it is nothing like my relationship with my wife but hey. it’s about her and her wife, not universal experiences. her blog her rules). tender culture as a whole seems to idealise relationships (cos i’m sure it exists in bi and het circles too) as these sweet, cutesy, soft things that are always perfect and everyone is just gentle and calm and utterly loving all the time.

and there’s never any fucking. there’s never any indication that women are sexual beings and sex is an integral part of relationships. (don’t anybody fight me on this. it’s true and you know it.) there’s never any indication that people argue, or tease, or fight, or get turned on. hell, most of the time there’s never even any indication that people PLAY and joke even. it’s ALL like “uwu i barely touch your hand and feel the stars align and we are soft and perfect and fall asleep in your arms.” BARF.

i think, tbh, that’s the issue i have with it being SO prevalent in lesbian online culture. we’ve been told FOREVER that lesbian sex either doesn’t exist, isn’t real sex, is gross, doesn’t really count OR alternately is this fetishistic OTT porn thing for men to jerk off to. we’ve been taught to be ashamed and keep our SEXUALITY to ourselves. the tender culture thing makes being lesbian palatable to the masses because it’s so non-threatening.

and to separate it from lesbian culture specifically, we AS WOMEN have been taught since birth to shut up about sex. we’ve been shamed into silence about female masturbation and female arousal and female orgasm and female desire. like so many of us grow up without learning about our own bodies. a woman knowing her own body is a threat. a woman seeking her own pleasure is a threat. basically a woman talking about sex is a threat. 

and even besides sex, we’ve been socialised to be calm, gentle, nice, accommodating, nurturing, kind, and so so soft. we’re not allowed to be hungry, funny, angry, emotional, mean, have boundaries, be wild and dirty and feral. we’re not allowed to scream and fight unless we’re one of “those” type of women as if all women don’t want to just fucking scream sometimes. 

sometimes women just need to get themselves off too. i just find it very… dangerous to ONLY see that non-threatening tender side of things because it upholds patriarchal behavioural gender norms to such a crazy degree.

so all this “tender culture” crap that basically denies this side of female existence by its silence bothers me. which is why i like to reblog posts critical about tender culture sometimes, alongside tender culture posts which i do like also. we need reminders that there is NOTHING wrong with masturbation, sexual arousal, sexual pleasure, fucking (not just ~making love~), and being a woman while doing it. there’s nothing weird or wrong about being angry and upset and playful and horny and wild. i would just really like to see more content like that. 

there is an argument that women/lesbians have been so overly sexualised by men that it’s a direct response to that pure sexual objectification. like, hey, women have feelings and care, and especially lesbians are romantic and loving too. not just sex objects shoving dildos in each other while wearing high heels. i can see some validity in that reaction. but to me, there is just too much and it starts to seem like that ALL lesbians want is hand holding and a pretty garden and cats in some idyllic cottage somewhere. it seems to have flipped too far the other way into a cliched “perfect woman” under patriarchy non-threat stereotype.

i also recognise that the moment a woman starts talking about sex, especially lesbians, it easily gets co-opted and appropriated by perverts and fetishists and pornsick men (and women). it’s hard to just talk about our experiences without it being viewed a specific way by outsiders. it’s either hyper-sexualised or hypo-sexualised by someone else. there is always gonna be some sick fuck with his dick in his hand ready to go or some conservative prick screaming bloody murder about morals as soon as we try to discuss our own experiences. but i don’t think that means we should shut up about everything sexual or dirty or “nasty” about our reality as women out of fear of these scrotal cumsacks.

it’s all about balance, really.

and being willing to get up and yell: GET OUT. THIS ISN’T FOR YOU. when you see them infiltrate something for us. you see a man make a lewd comment, call him out. make him uncomfortable. take back what we have from them.

like i said, there’s nothing inherently wrong with tender culture. i just think it needs to be balanced with actual reality. there’s nothing wrong with romantic daydreams and just wanting someone to love you gently, and to cherish you and your relationship. and especially when the world is so insane, it’s fine to want something calm and gentle. but real relationships are not JUST that one thing. and i think tender culture gives a false sense of reality as to what normal adult relationships are like. i’ve been told here on my blog that even talking about sex with my wife is TMI (it’s not), talking about masturbation is TMI (it’s not), and even worse that me arguing with my wife and getting pissed off at her is something to be so terrified of (it’s not) that i should “get somewhere safe”. no. i should work it out and communicate. not run away every time things aren’t fluffy and calm and tender. that’s so unhealthy. and that’s what i feel being inundated with tender culture does. it gives a warped idea about what a healthy relationship is.

like no. tender culture denies this not so nice reality of human relationships, especially when you live together. like yes, of course we have the beautiful, romantic, tender side too. but people argue. people can fucking hate each other sometimes when they’re stressed out or frustrated and it comes out in arguments. and there is a scale. there’s a point when it becomes unhealthy and toxic but i think it’s equally unhealthy to never argue and force yourself to push any feelings you have down in order to maintain some idealized genteel version of a relationship that you’ve been bombarded with online as what you SHOULD have. 

and this goes for joking around and playfulness too. sometimes when i joke with my wife and call her a bitch or she says “rude” things to me, people are like “OH MY GOD!” but… i mean, that’s just us? it’s joking. (we sometimes do it purposely in front of people to laugh at their reactions cos we are both assholes.) we play with each other a lot. she’s an incessant tease. she calls me an idiot. i literally tell her i’m gonna punch her in the face when she’s teasing me. do i mean it? of course not. we roughhouse and wrestle and playfight even (not sexually jsyk. just simply playing which is SO LOST in this society. we don’t do any bdsm bullshit). it’s a type of physical expression that doesn’t hurt anybody and requires a certain level of connection and trust too. the fact i can tackle her onto the sofa and she squeals and grapples me back is HEALTHY. adults can play too. it’s like that post i made a while back when i talked about how my wife shoved her fingers in me when i was bending over unaware and laughed about it ...and was told it was TMI. like um ...we are physically intimate and playful and it’s not a BAD THING. and i’ll share it cos honestly? if you don’t have that level of intimacy and trust and fun, i personally think there may be something wrong. (if it crosses personal boundaries for you, that’s something else. but she knows it doesn’t bother me.) on my blog i will talk about my relationship with my wife in ALL its glory, bad, good, fun, horny, loving cos it is a fully-rounded relationship and adults don’t experience just one thing.

i fucking love sex with women and i was denied it for so long i’m not about to shut up about it now. i love fucking and the female body in all its wet, messy, soft, beautiful glory. i love being in love finally and properly and i won’t shut up about that either. i won’t be shamed to be quiet about my body or my sex life or my relationship that ISN’T perfect. (like i’m literally going to kill her if says to me one more time that 80s music is the best music lmao like she’s gonna kill me if i leave one more dirty bowl beside the sofa for the stupid idiot dogs to get at). 

to some people, i guess reality doesn’t matter. they only want the daydreams and fantasies, or they only live in a soft cloud world. that’s up to them. maybe that’s what they need in their lives. and that is fine. for a while but it isn’t real life and it’s not what you should strive for. it SHOULD be part of what you strive for however. you should have someone who cherishes you and cares and loves and respects.

i just don’t think tender culture should be as overwhelming as it is. it sets standards that i don’t think are realistic. let’s talk about sex or arguing or any range of human relationship issues too. don’t get rid of tender culture, at all. keep it. cherish it. let it give you hope and positivity and ease loneliness and isolation. healthy, loving, respectful fantasies are important af. but don’t act like a puritanical dunce when a woman talks about sex or hunger or anger as well.

i mean i’m not asking for sexually explicit content and i’d never go into intense detail about my own life (that’s what fanfic is for lmao) but a little recognition that women aren’t just domestic soft cliches. that’s all.

“don’t get your hopes up too high”: An Exhaustively Curated 2018 Playlist

So, since time immemorial I have been putting together year-end playlists and for a long time they were pretty sloppy affairs overall.  Last year, I decided to make up some kind of formula for putting these playlists together.  Basically what it comes down to is, from every new album I listen to, released in the given year, I pick one song.  No repeating artists because that gets to be too much (although featured acts aren’t subject to this rule).  When deciding what releases are going to get my attention, aside from my own personal tastes (skews toward alt. rock and punk a lot of the time) and releases from longtime favorites (this year we saw releases from Metric, and Animal Collective, as well as a long-awaited A Perfect Circle album, and even a Spotify single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), I try to get give more of my time to queer artists (and this year there were TONS of queer acts releasing great music--Adult Mom, Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers, Janelle Monae, Snail Mail, SOPHIE, etc. etc. etc. hallelujah).  I also try to make an effort broaden my musical worldview by making time for artists that operate within genres I don’t always naturally gravitate towards.  This was a great year to get back into hip-hop (Rico Nasty, Cardi B, Tierra Whack, Black Panther OST) after not really vibing with some of the directions it has taken in the past ten or so years.  I have also tried to include a track by every band I saw in 2018, providing they actually released something in 2018 and it is available on Spotify (strong apologies to Partner, Bully, Shellshagg, Kimya Dawson, Rozwell Kid, Los Campesinos, the incomparable Liz Phair, and the legendary Fleetwood Mac--y’all didn’t release anything this year).  I give myself until the end of January of the following year to finalize my expansive, year-end playlist, and here we are.  This years playlist is over 15 hours long--almost long enough to put on while you’re doing all that laundry you've been putting off.  I hope you enjoy.

Gravity Falls is a very cool and funny series. I can really recommend it, if you ever have the time to watch it. Its about two 12 year old twins who spend their summer break at their uncles home. They start to investigate and reveal a lot of magical creatures and mysteries in the town.

Natalie Dormer for the Rake

Publicists are an interesting breed. They are the gatekeepers of popular culture, guarding the people we want to get to know. Avaricious periodicals seek access to tell a good, saucy story, and the publicist is the alkaline to that acidic form of journalism. We at The Rake like to think our mould is different. We want to celebrate people rather than destroy their reputations, and the Rake-in- Progress feature was always intended to pick out younger men who personify the nuances of style and substance.

A few months ago a publicist contacted me with an idea — to feature women in this column. Ah, I thought, this magazine was built on the notion of making certain men relevant, empowering the XY sex and giving the reader confidence that his classical tastes are not antediluvian. With that in mind, if we were to feature a woman, we realised she would have to have something extra special, a bar that, depending on her identity, might be insurmountable. “Natalie Dormer” was the response I got. Bar cleared.

Dormer’s work could have appeared on your radar from a number of places. It could have been in her role as the ill-fated Anne Boleyn in The Tudors, or as Cressida in the blockbuster epic The Hunger Games, or as Margaery Tyrell in that lesser-known show Game of Thrones. In a series that deals in androgynous powerplay and raw sexuality, to come in late and bring something new, as Dormer has done in GoT, requires a rare and idiosyncratic talent — the acting umami, if you will.

Dormer’s red-carpet appearances often see her in bold suits with a cracking selection of colours. For her taste, her craft and, as we discovered on meeting, her humorous and kind disposition, we are delighted to say, Hello to Natalie Dormer, our first female Rake-in-Progress.

On a scale of one to 10, how annoyed are you at interviewers still asking you about Game of Thrones?

ND: Annoyed is the wrong word. I am respectful of what that show did, profile-wise, to my career, and it helps that I love the creators of the show and I don’t begrudge Dan [Weiss] or David [Benioff] a moment of their vision and success, and I am fucking proud to be part of something that is so part of the zeitgeist. I just never want to be defined solely for any role, but I know that with Game of Thrones it will take a few more years than other roles to go; I am not her, I have the ability to change. That is why The Hunger Games was great for me... Doing those two roles at the same time helped me find the money for my own film that I cowrote — without them, the financing would be harder to find. It’s about tipping your cap when you look back and say, ‘Thanks, guys, that was fucking amazing’.

Do you think as an actress you get to be part of today’s influential youth culture by default?

ND: Yes, definitely. I was at the GQ awards and Stormzy came up to me asking for a selfie. I knew who Stormzy was, but I am not into grime. I kind of think the fact this guy wanted to have a selfie with Margaery Tyrell blew my mind.

What has made you resist the lure of social media affirmation?

ND: I do believe that if you open the door to that, there are two sides. If you believe the good stuff, you’ve got to believe the bad, too. At the end of the day I fundamentally act for quite a selfish reason, in so far as I can’t imagine doing any other job. And there is something about storytelling that is cathartic for me, it is how I cope at how unjust and scary the world is, working out my humanity, arguments of love and power, who am I and what do I want to do with the years I have on this earth... My day-to-day way of surviving the world is acting.

So how does that translate to home life?

ND: I am a simple person that likes to operate on a low level. I am quite introverted. People always assume with my relationship with Anthony [Natalie’s fiancé] that naturally I must be the extrovert and he the introvert, but it is actually the other way round, because he is a director who feeds off people, he likes socialising, being around people, whereas I am very happy being with the dog on my own, reading a book, or going three days without seeing someone. I like my own company. I need quiet, because when I am on set or rehearsal, I do have high energy, so I need calm and quiet and to be a human being that is removed from my job.

Your job is to tell other people’s truths rather than your own. Do you get peace from that?

ND: Yes, there is a catharsis by processing issues through metaphor. Fuck, it’s why we tell stories. Doesn’t matter if we talk about religion, mythology or the latest Netflix show, the way human beings deal with the darkness and light of life is by telling stories.

You were out of work for a while. How did you manage to keep on keeping on?

ND: It was horrific, and I did my fair share of crying every night, rocking in a corner and facing all those demons of, ‘Oh my god, I am never going to work, this is all fucked up, I can’t pay the bills, what am I going to do’ — deep 3a.m. fear. But you have a choice.

There is something innate within me, and I don’t know where it comes from, so long as I think a fight is still worth fighting, I persevere. I have learnt as I have gotten older that if you don’t care about the fight, it is O.K. to walk away.

And now that work is coming your way, can you ever feel comfortable, is it ever enough?

ND: When you are 18 years old you have projections of where you want to be, and at various stages of your life you start ticking boxes... Oh my God, I am sitting here in conversation with Julianne Moore, or on a plane on the way to a premiere, or being directed by Patrick Marber. You have all these imaginary places where you go where you think, I made it, whatever that means. Fuck me, you’ve made it if you can pay the bills and keep a roof over your head doing something you love. What I have learnt as a woman who has come out of the angst of her twenties and being liberated by knowing yourself in your early thirties, you don’t have to hold yourself to the promises you made yourself when you were 18.

Is there anything that gets on your nerves?

ND: Yes, I sometimes hate the word ‘strong’. It gets used in interviews a lot, people say to me, ‘Natalie Dormer, you love to play strong women’, and I think, Holy fuck, how reductive can you be?

What’s the latest film you’ve watched?

ND: Last weekend we rewatched The Karate Kid. I haven’t seen that fucking movie since I was 11, it’s so good. I was bawling, when he was standing the way he does at the end, the tears were coming down. It’s so poignant, a three-act structure and to a tee the perfect hero’s journey.

You were directed in a Hozier video by your fiancé largely in the arms of other men. Did you know that was the plan when you showed up?

ND: No, we didn’t, he didn’t write it. We are friends with Andrew [Hozier-Byrne] and we love his music so much and said that we would love to do a video for you. He said his brother had just come up with the treatment for the video and we went home and read it and I said, ‘Fuck, are you O.K. with this, darling?’ It was amazing, we did it in 24 hours. To me that video is about how our imagination takes us to other worlds, worlds where we see a man on the Tube with a man bun and tattoos and you think, How would my life be different if I was with them, what kind of music would we be listening to, what food would we be eating, what kind of sex would we be having? Or look at that really attractive banker down there with that lovely watch, that’s a completely different existence. To me that girl [in the video] was lonely.

Do you feel like the dynamic of masculinity is changing in a good way?

ND: There are men who are conscientious about their body and their appearance, their spirituality — the modern man, one dare say. Just because women find feminism and equality, and their voice, doesn’t mean men need to be pushed down and be emasculated. Both genders, especially in the 21st century’s cosmopolitan cities, are refining the balance between them, and finding that it is O.K. to think and feel and dress in these different ways.

What do you feel is rakish in a man? What attracts you?

ND: I like a man who knows himself. I can equally fall for a man who wears a £3,000 suit or a guy busking on the street in dirty clothes. If a man knows his identity and is funny and not too egotistical, it is all about making me laugh, because the way the world is going, if you can’t laugh it all goes to shit. Someone who is truthful, candid, honest, and can be called on their bullshit. Aesthetically I have fallen for all different types of men, I don’t have a type, I really don’t. Yes, I like a well dressed man, what woman doesn’t?

You’ve just finished filming Picnic at Hanging Rock in Australia. How was it?

ND: I was staying in an area of Melbourne called Fitzroy, which is like hipsterville. By osmosis, after two months I began to buy the jump suits, wearing my hair in a top knot, getting my turmeric latte (I asked if this was truly a thing: it is).

You often wear suits on the red carpet. Do you know where that comes from?

ND: I came home from this shoot and told my other half about it and he went, ‘Oh my God, that shoot was so you’. Increasingly the core Natalie Dormer is those suits. It comes from an obsession with Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Vivien Leigh, the 1940s, when women started wearing those trousers and the shoulders were in. And suits are so comfortable — fuck you, guys, you’ve been wearing them all this time and you didn’t tell us.

So what’s coming up for you?

ND: Picnic at Hanging Rock has been bought by Amazon. I play Hester Appleyard. It is about a girls’ college on the outskirts of Melbourne in the 1900s: a woman who has run from a dark past in London and has set up her own little fiefdom, this girls’ school, where she reigns as a sort of misguided anti-heroine, trying to teach girls what it takes to get on in the world, but in a kind of Miss Jean Brodie way is doing the opposite of what she thinks she is meant to be doing. I am looking forward to seeing it.
