Covering a revered alternative rock band like Dinosaur Jr. is not easy matter. The group has a very distinct sound, which can be clearly heard on tracks like “Little Fury Things“. Dinosaur Jr. – Where You Been

Si bien ‘Where You Been’ no es considerado por los fans como el mejor álbum de la banda, sí es de reconocer que marca un antes y un después para #JMascis y compañía. En medio de la cruda escena alternativa de los 90, el quinto trabajo de la banda, consolidó a #DinosaurJr, como un acto para la posteridad. 

De lo más destacado de #WhereYouBeen está su valentía para experimentar con nuevos sonidos e instrumentos, sin sacrificar la esencia cruda y agresiva que había cautivado a los últimos hijos de la Generación X, resultando en composiciones más melódicas y una profundidad emocional que resonó profundamente en propios y extraños.

Este álbum también consagró a #JMascis como un músico y compositor excepcional, destacándose como un guitarrista que introdujo en el spotlight de la escena de los 90 las líneas melódicas y los ambiciosos solos de guitarra que homenajeaban a sus héroes de los años 70. Prácticamente puedes escuchar a Clapton tocando Layla en el memorable solo de Get Me.

Por otro lado, la reintegración de Murph en la batería y la llegada de Mike Johnson, (ex-Snakepit), dieron a #DinosaurJr. una cohesión interpretativa mucho más refinada en sus presentaciones en vivo. La banda sonaba más fuerte y en sintonía que nunca.

La firma con Sire Records fue otro paso audaz para la banda; otorgó a  Mascis la libertad creativa siempre había soñado. El resultado fue un álbum que fusionaba la cruda intensidad del #DinosaurJr con melodías y arreglos más sofisticados, atrayendo a un público más amplio sin perder su base de seguidores leales.

El éxito comercial del álbum fue innegable. El sencillo "Start Choppin" alcanzó el número 3 en la lista Modern Tracks de Estados Unidos y llegó al Top 20 de Singles en el Reino Unido. Este logro catapultó a Dinosaur Jr. a nuevas alturas de popularidad y les permitió llegar a un público más amplio sin comprometer su identidad sonora.

Al final, "Where You Been” no solo representó un momento crucial en la evolución de Dinosaur Jr., también dejó una marca indeleble en la música alternativa como puede escucharse en actos más actuales como Su estilo influyó en actos futuros como Kurt Vile y Courtney Barnett.

Con su fusión de elementos experimentales, la maestría de #JMascis como intérprete y su éxito comercial, este álbum sigue siendo un hit imprescindible… todo esto a 30 años de su lanzamiento.
