This is a great concept, especially in today’s society that is so heavily driven by technology. Immersive ED uses intellectual property, which is interesting because it means “nobody can own it…and you couldn’t prohibit anybody from using it” (Aaron Walsh). These are great tools to take advantage of because, since they are ‘open’, it is useable at any time for any person to join. These types of platforms, such as FaceBook and SnapChat, are heavily used in society because of this, and for education purposes this means it is something important to teach, while also being easily available at any time for immersive learning.

Immersive Education uses several virtual environments as engaging teaching styles including virtual worlds, learning games, simulations and full-augmented-reality. One that was talked about and shown in a video earlier this semester was the virtual eco-system used by middle-schools. The virtual eco-system allows students to virtually enter a digital world and interact with the subject matter, learning it more effectively since they are heavily engaged. Also, the virtual world allows students to enter and see things that would normally not be possible - such as going under water in the winter, seeing molecules and bacteria, etc. During the same video, a question that Dr. Walsh answered from the crowd at the end was “…worldwide there has been a decline in historic place visiting…particularly marked in the united States…does Immersive Ed have a solution for that, are there opportunities in relation to virtual world for revisiting the real world”. This brings up a great application for immersive learning because a virtual world can be used as an “advertisement” for people to visit the actual attraction. Historical sites can use virtual worlds to entice people to not only visit for the first time, but also to re-visit the digital version of the site after they see it in person. Dr. Walsh says this is a 2-way street which is very true - there are two ways for the concept to work and both are very effective.

During Dr. Walsh’s Collaborative Computing course, taken through Boston College, students are introduced to many different concepts, types of technology, and even best-practices for various forms of social media. Students are instructed on how to create various social media accounts, such as FaceBook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+, and explore their many capabilities. Dr. Walsh teaches students how to post content, share content, comment on others content, follow other users, create tags etc., all of which teaching students the importance of these technologies in today’s society, their capabilities in today’s society, and several best-practices for efficiently reaching an audience. Social media is a huge part of today’s society for both leisure and work, and Immersive Education makes sure that because of this, they are a huge part of the course material as well. In addition, Virtual Worlds are used in this course as immersive learning tools so that students can interact with one another as embodied virtual humans. For this practice, the course utilizes programs such as Second Life and MineCraft which are virtual environments for users to build, explore and interact with other users.

In order to share the initiative of immersive learning, Immersive Education Summits are held across the globe to help others learn about not only Immersive Education itself, but also to learn about relevant concepts to teach in students in today’s technology-driven society. In 2015, Immersive Education hosted IMMERSION 2015 which “...addresses the personal and cultural impact of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality, augmented reality (AR), holograms and holography, wearable computing, mechanical and neural brain interfaces, cybernetics, affective computing, neuro-gaming technologies that are used to create adaptive and radically compelling game experiences, 3D printing, personal robotics, telepresence, virtual worlds, simulations, game-based learning and training systems, and fully immersive environments such as caves and domes”(http://summit.immersiveeducation.org/). As a part of the Collaborative Computing course, taught by Dr. Aaron Walsh at Boston College, students are taught how to be a part of the “Immersive Education Initiative conference Outreach Team”, and are able to use this title as a resume item afterwards. Students are tasked and taught to source educators in the nearby area from Colleges, Universities, High Schools and K-12, and then learn how to write a formal email to the educators, sharing with them the upcoming BlockChain Summit.
