I just heard that companies are starting to phase out the production of DVDs and BluRays and it just got me thinking, on top of all of the stupid implications that comes along with the end of physical media, it also means that if the internet goes down, or a company goes under, we just won't have that show we love anymore. Or that movie. We could go into a real and legitimate dark age.
All that to say, it would be really cool if someone wrote a story about someone living in the aftermath of said dark age.
That is all. I'm going to try not to think about it too hard.

History and fashion nerds rejoice, I hadn't anticipated the post stretching out quite so much, but I think you might enjoy it - or at least I hope so! 🤍
- note added after final review because, well, it's about my latest adhd induced hyperfixation.
Ok, first of all - LOOK AT THE DETAILS ON THAT ILLUSTRATION!! ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! Congratulations and please keep up your amazing work, @marichka!💗
But you know what I loved the most? The fact that this post showed up, out of nowhere (I didn't know nor followed @marichka's art until now - I suggest you do the same and follow them) when, for the past few weeks, I've been on Pinterest, pinning illustrations and old photos that showcase the Portuguese* folk/traditional clothing.
On the left an example of a girl wearing the Ukrainian shawl; on the right, a girl wearing the Portuguese shawl.
After avoiding and even ignoring this part of my ancestors' history, I've recently fell in love with it, after receiving two traditional black scarfs. And I've been reading a lot more about them, after looking for inspiration on Pinterest, so I can experiment and include in my daily outfits for this season. They resembles a lot with the Ukrainian scarfs, and from other countries as well, that were heavily influenced by Moorish, Mediterranean, and Atlantic cultures.
I mean, they all have obviously their own differences and charm, but this is why I love to study history so much: it always fascinating to notice how we are all connected. Through language, costums, clothing, and/or other aspects that we think are uniquely our own, but somehow - through positive influence or sometimes - impossible to not mention human's dark nature - through appropriation, invasions, war, etc. Whether this commom thread that unites us has its origin on genuine admiration, positive cultural exchanges or in malice, I just wanted to congratulate @marichka's amazing attention to detail with those scarfs, and the rest of her work, of course. Which, by the way, is part of their illustration series on Ukrainian headdresses. 😍
Ugh, I just love when these tiny life coincidences happen - it always makes my day!
But before I post this rambling, I hope the artist doesn't mind I take the chance to showcase more photos of the Portuguese shawl (and the rest of the portuguese traditional clothing), above-mentioned.
Extract from @marichka's post, that started this never ending post (〃'◡'〃)

You can read more about them Portuguese Folklore on this website, but I recommend starting on this article if you just want to check clothing: The Variety of traditional clothing in Porttugal/ A variedade dos trajes tradicionais em Portugal - Folclore.PT The shawl/ O Xaile | Trajes tradicionais portugueses - Folclore.PT
And here are some photos (photos are hyperlinked to other own article of origin):
Part of the Vianesa Traditional Dressing, which is now considered an icon of the city of Viana do Castelo.
«A woman from Minho with a algibeira» - algibeira are pouches that women would add to their waist apron (in front or underneath) and depending on their status they were either have lots of colours, motifs, etc.
Lavradeiras da Abelheira (Cliché of the distinguished amateur Mr. Emigdio Freitas, from Porto) in "Ilustração Portuguesa", nº709 – September 22, 1919
This photo was not taken from the website Folclore.pt website. Had to take it from here, to show you a similar to the one I got.
Different ways to wear, as a headscarf - depending on your region, weather, status, work-life, etc.
And finally, I just now this found website that apparently is a «project for the preservation of European culture in the field of customs related to traditional dances», and this page summarises Portugal's: Portugal – 4DCulture Platform
The Wedding Dance (1566) by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
For now they only have information on Bulgaria, Germany, Lithuania, Portugal and Greece. But it has the European Commission's support and we need to, now more than ever, elevate and keep on supporting all cultural databases (online* and offline - check what you can do locally: on your local library or museums, for example).
*I don't want to prolong this any further, but regarding those online databases, I am again talking about the incoming digital dark ages, that every day seems to become more and more real. You can, and should, read more about it by searching the latest Internet Archive news, or you can start here: - Shining a Light on the Digital Dark Age - Long Now - We're losing our digital history. Can the Internet Archive save it? - The New Digital Dark Age | WIRED - and this video essay (that's already pending urgent updating, but that is still a valid complement to the 3 articles highlighted above):

Uhhh, I've been drawing these ornaments for so long💙 I like to dig in some kind of ornament, or leaves, or a forest and just decoratively draw everything, it's like meditation for me The only downside is that I draw such things for a very long time, and sometimes I disappear from social networks How do you like this illustration?

I don’t think people realize how fragile digital mementos can be. As someone who loves digital archiving, please don’t rely on social media or website hosts to keep it safe forever.
Download that shit. Pop a copy into secure cloud storage, or even put it on paper and into an acid-free box
#this wasn’t meant to comment on the fears of tumblr dying but uh good timing I guess#if tumblr ever does shut down i hope we can save more than we did for geocities#library#archives#Sapio speaks#digital dark age

I talk about this problem a lot but this is why I like the existence of dvd burners.
Sure, digital media saves space or whatever, and it also makes it really easy for corporations to monopolize ownership of a thing so you have no choice but to pay for their streaming service if you want to watch it.
Not to mention if (when) something happens, all that culture will be gone because digital media can and does just disappear. Whether because the file got lost, corrupted, or something happened to the server it was stored on (or worst case scenario the internet just dies), it could suddenly cease to exist with no way to access it ever again, all because Netflix or whatever other streaming service decided that they didnt want physical media of that thing or for people to actually own the shows and movies they pay for.
So I will always encourage people to keep copies and records of the media they like. Print things out. Put them on cds and dvds and bluray discs. Especially if it only exists on a streaming service like netflix because they care more about your money than the longevity of their product.
seriously FUCK netflix and most other streaming services!!!! i miss physical media so much!!! behind the scenes footage, bloopers, interviews, cast/director/producer commentaries etc… bring this back, damn it!!!!

The silicon age is built on sand.
The things we love can disappear just like that.
Streaming changed everything. We pull from the cloud, not realising most of the content we buy is rented to us, not truly ours. Whether a Kindle book, or a film bought on iTunes; they can snatch it back in a heartbeat. Spotify's incompletion fucks with the canon, omitting beloved songs and albums based on licensing. Maybe a generation will grow up never having heard early Jay-Z, or Lana del Rey, deep cuts of Radiohead or the delights of Sapokanikan. Maybe their friends will never get into K-Pop. When George Lucas reworked Star Wars there was outrage; Disney makes stealth edits whenever it likes. People joke that future films and TV shows might just iterate - rush towards a deadline, patching ropey plot points and effects after the fact.
And cancelled artists don't have a chance. You had to burn a book, but a file's just gone. Maybe, like Amon Tobin, one errant sample gets your iconic track erased from the internet.
Because few people realise how delicate the cloud is. An outage freezes traffic, and one day might wipe out all those illicit remixes, all those emails, love notes. A million unprinted photos.
On a fragile internet, so much of our cultural wealth hangs in the balance.
All our beloved things. Tomorrow's dust.

Thorin Oakenshield
Y´all don´t understand how close I was to just giving him a mullet and be done with it💀
Thoughts↓
I gave him a raven forehead tattoo because of Erebor, and of course, I´m always giving my dwarves greyish skin :)
Nabbing @/peasant-player HC of Thorin chopping off his beard and only letting it regrow when he becomes king again, also it would be so symbolic of him being a Longbeard, who are known for having the longest beards, and only letting it regrow when he feels worthy again :´) - they also have a HC that most of his beads are given by his family over the years which is really wholesome - also also they drew young Thorin for me you can find on their page!!
I also really liked @/meluiloth HC that he wears silver over gold which is such a cool match for his silver streaking hair, so forgive me professor, but Thorin does not have any gold rings

if tiktok actually sells to the US, it’s gonna get so regulated and censored 😒😒😒
I’m really not looking forward to scrambling if the app actually is getting taken down bc it’s where I’ve made all my cooking videos…
#very unfortunate news tonight#they know they have no power over the app and it’s a huge source of world information#so they’ve been trying to control it for a while now#digital dark age
