1. Tell me about Bear- I have absolutely no idea who he is 2. I'm still interested in the natal charts and you've talked a lot about James and a little on Gordon- But not about the others (Mossy, Edward, Percy, Duck etc.) What do you have in mind? :3

1. Oh, you’re in for a treat!

Okay, Bear is not a well-developed character, but his intro story is still interesting. He appears in 1968’s Enterprising Engines… otherwise known as “the one where Flying Scotsman visits and Douglas rescues Oliver, Isabel, and Toad” (so that’s prob. why Bear gets overlooked, lol).

Honestly, a ton happens in that book (it’s arguably the very peak of RWS wonderfulness) and, amid everything else, Henry has a little mini-arc over the first two stories. In “Tenders for Henry” Henry gets worked up over Flying Scotsman’s two tenders and Duck plays the same trick as goes down in the Season 3 episode. In the following story, “Super Rescue,” Henry’s regulator jams, and he’s heading home for repairs rather melancholy and fretful, expecting to be mocked some more, and regretting that he’s a “failed engine” right at this particular moment, when they have a famous visitor, and when Henry’s still very much the yard laughingstock for the tender incident.

En route he encounters not one but *both* visiting diesel engines, who have alike “failed” with their trains far worse than he has. Now, D199 has so far done nothing but talk absolute smack about the steam engines. Bear (who is not Bear yet, but it’s a lot less confusing if we don’t drag his number into this) had tried to get his fellow Other Railway diesel to shut up, in very “don’t you think, perhaps, that it’s a little, uhhhhhh, GODDAMN RUDE to sneer at them in such endless and insulting detail when it’s THEIR RAILWAY?” fashion, but D199 is not very shut-uppable. At least until this very moment, when he’s failed, and the signalman is threatening to bring out his can opener if the useless “Spamcan” won’t hold his tongue!

Long story short, Henry moves Spamcan and his goods train *and* Bear and his passenger train to the next station. (The other engines are delighted that Henry has vindicated steam. Flying Scotsman is also very proud, which I think is cute, as Henry’s honorary introduction into the Gresley family seems to end on a high note of acceptance after all.) Then Henry pulls Bear back to the sheds Works… tender-first, because he still can only reverse, and it’s then that Bear discovers for the first time that his superloco rescuer was *also* a failed engine and Bear is all “ooooOOOOOOoooOOOOoooo…?” and, also, *heart eyes* (that last detail may be my own editorial flourish).

Super!Henry activates "heart-throb hero" mode

But, srs tho. Are those not heart-eyes? I ask you.

By the end of the book, D199 “Spamcan” (Never. Live. It. Down.) is sent packing but Bear stays. After the N.W.R. purchases him, he’s repainted from blue to his class’s original Brunswick green. He’s given his name Bear because of the growling noise his engine makes, and loves it, because having a name makes him feel like he really belongs. The end.

Bear doesn’t really see much action after his intro book, though. Honestly, I find it hard to even headcanon up a personality for him, because all the canon details make him seem like not much more than a second BoCo (except that BoCo actually gets significantly more screen time, lol… especially in the annuals). The Fat Controller even praises both of them for being “versatile” in the same breath. (Because, it seems, they can take both coaches and trucks. Which, um, so? This is the island of Sodor. Y'all even made Gordon a mixed-traffic engine.) Bear works main line, he can take the Express when the usual suspects aren’t available (though his real niche is “the Limited”), James is a dick to him for a while but finally accepts him, and on at least one occasion in a later RWS book Bear and BoCo are both seen at Tidmouth sort of rolling their eyes at each other when *yet another* round of steam/diesel drama is going down.

(Sidenote, basis-wise, Bear, as a Class 35, is actually not quite so strong as BoCo. Admittedly BoCo seems to do main line work pretty often, but this highlights to me again that his initial allocation to a branch line was a bit unusual. Honestly, it may have been meant as temporary until his motor was replaced with something more reliable. Dunno.)

A lot more stories that Grant can make up with his model trains when he rebuilds his model railway layout.

Paxton’s package. Paxton the diesel engine received a special package at the harbor. Sir Topham Hatt said it’s a gift for Salty to celebrate the anniversary of when he first came to the island. And the gift was an antique anchor from one of the very first cargo ships to ever come to Sodor. Will Paxton be able to keep it hidden from Salty before his party at the docks?

Ulli and Oliver. Oliver the great western engine was going to work with Ulli, one of the diesel shunters from the mainland. He really hopes the diesel can handle Dulcie & Isabel the way he does.

Samantha’s Santa special. Samantha the purple saddle tank engine is very excited. She was going to pull the presents train, as well as pick a coach for Santa to ride in so he can go to his grotto and give out presents for the children.

Rosie and Hector. Rosie was requested to collect an extra large load of stone from the blue mountain quarry. Paxton would normally do it, but he was feeling sick. But Rosie was nervous because she had to carry the crushed stone in Hector. Rosie was still a little bit nervous about Hector because she still remembered that he frightened her on his first day on Sodor. Will Rosie be able to forgive Hector for scaring her?

Double Timothy trouble. It was almost Halloween, and Timothy the oil burning engine heard a story from Thomas that there’s a ghost engine who shares the same name as him. The oil burning engine was rather nervous, but he had to do something because there can be only one Timothy on Sodor.

Amanda’s ghost hunt. Amanda was requested to take some passengers to go trick or treating from station to station when she heard a story from Fizzy. It’s a story about another E2 tank engine. He’s not as scary as Timothy aka engine number zero. He is known as engine 17.

Engines in space. Jupiter and 119 were visiting Sodor from their American railroad because they were to help Thomas with a brand new place on the railway. It’s a long tunnel with cardboard models of the planets. It was to make them feel like they were in outer space.

Mixed traffic trains. Sir Topham Hatt is trying out a new railway experiment, mixed traffic trains, which are trains that have coaches and freight cars together. Gordon thought the idea was ridiculous because he says passengers and freight don’t mix. He wouldn’t want smelly freight too close to his passengers.

Fizzy fizzles out. Fizzy the red tank engine was shunting freight cars when the ballast trucks began making him very upset. He gave them such a bump that he and the trucks came off the rails. To make matters worse, his fire bars collapsed. So he couldn’t deliver Coca-Cola to the stations. So he was sent to be repaired and Poy had to deliver his freight cars for him.

Robin’s race. The engines on the Island of Sodor were being visited by some of the famous engines from the mainland. Jimmy the Jinty and some of his friends, Simon, Robin and Terry. Sir Topham Hatt had requested Shedmaster Jimmy to bring them to visit and lend a wheel or three for the summer holidays on Sodor. Robin explained he’s as quick as the robins that nested on him years ago and Thomas challenged him to a race after telling him that he can go faster than the wind. Who will win the race from the quarry and back to Knapford station?

Engine ten thousand. Gordon was feeling very excited because a very grand looking engine is coming to visit from the mainland. It was a class W1 engine who has the number 10000 on his cab. He was known as Hush-Hush. He had come to fill in for Rebecca when she was sent to the works to be fitted with new boiler tubes.

Stephen’s great race. Stephen was feeling very excited because it was the anniversary of when he won the Rainhill Trials many years ago. He wanted to find a way to celebrate his anniversary. So, the engines decided that Stephen should race a horse pulling a single wagon from Ulfstead Castle to Brendam Docks. Will Stephen show everyone, especially Diesel that he’s more than just an antique, but a reliable engine with the heart of a champion?

Tiger’s roaring whistle. One day, an old fashioned steam locomotive named Tiger was visiting the Island of Sodor. He used to work on the Liverpool and Manchester railway. After his long journey, he was given a new whistle that sounded a bit like a tiger roaring. Will he be able to put it to good use?

Henry and the holograms. Henry the green engine saw Ronnie the Amtrak engine was given a gift from Kenji in Japan. It was a hologram projector that will be fitted to the computer in his cab. A hologram is a three dimensional reproduction of an image. That way, Ronnie can download pictures from the web and make them look real. But Henry was a little bit worried that Ronnie might have trouble getting the hang of his new hologram projector.

Flash dashes in. A new high speed train has come to visit the Island of Sodor. His name is Flash. He’s 4 years old and he is eager to impress the other engines. But will he be able to fit in with Thomas and the other engines?

Diesels and Daleks. The engines were having an anniversary party for the show known as Dr. Who. Diesel, Timmy, Splatter and Dodge teased Percy and Poy about the Daleks coming to send the steam engines to the scrap heap by blasting their boilers to bits. The two little green engines felt rather nervous. But then Thomas had a naughty idea on how to teach Diesel and his pals a lesson. He spoke to Ruth the inventor, who had created remote control replicas of the Daleks for the party to help prank the diesel engines. And that night, just before the party began, they used them to scare the four diesels into thinking they were going to exterminate them.

Royal Rescue Ch.5 - Reunion

"124… the heck? CHLOE?!"

The approaching engine screeched to a stop next to Ellie, slowly ambling forward alongside Chloe. They were another GP9, just like Chloe and 119, but they were numbered 135 and painted with a red circle logo and "SRY Rail Link", instead of Chloe's white stripes and E&N logo. As soon as the islander Geep saw them, she immediately forgot about the situation. "Ohmygosh, Sis!!" she chimed, smiling brightly. "Gosh, it's been--" "Sis, what the hell are you doing back here?" asked 135 suddenly, cutting Chloe off.

"…Jeez, nice welcome party," said Chloe, smiling at her sister engine jokingly. "A-are you friend or foe?" squeaked Ellie, from behind. 135 didn't hear her. "OK… sorry, sorry," said 135. "It's great to see you, Chlo, but… seriously, you gotta get back to the Island. How'd you even get here?" "Ferry," said Chloe simply. She took a breath to continue, but 135 cut her off again. "OK, obviously, ferry. That was a dumb question," said the SRY Geep. "But seriously, you gotta get out of here. You aren't registered to Southern anymore, and 119's gonna shove you around if you try to move from the shop." "119… Carla, Jules, she has a name," said Chloe, in an accusatory tone. "What's up with her, anyway?"

Jules…? thought Ellie.

135 sighed. "Chloe, that isn't Carla anymore." "She's a cyborg… isn't she?" asked Ellie, quietly. Chloe opened her mouth to speak, but 135 finally noticed Ellie before she could. She rolled backwards to see the smaller engine. "…Jeez, I didn't even notice the switcher," they said. "Sorry I just blew right past you. What's your name?" "H-hi," squeaked Ellie nervously. "I'm Ellie. I'm not even Canadian…" 135 chuckled. "Julie," she said with a smile, "but you can call me Jules. And don't sweat the non-Canadian thing, none of us are. Save for the switchers. And the SDs, but they're assholes." "Okay," replied Ellie quietly. She wasn't really sure what else to say, as Julie rolled forward again to continue talking to her sister.

"Anyway, Chloe," began Julie. "About 119. Long story short, just… things have gone totally off the rails here since you left in '04." "What… happened?" asked Chloe, worried. Duncan looked sad. "Presumably some real bad shit," he put in. Julie sighed and said, "OK, everyone, this is gonna get really heavy. You might want your handbrakes on." Ellie looked worried. "Sh-should I be human for this, Duncan?" "No… that might freak people out. And draw more attention." "Wait, what?" asked Julie, looking surprised. "…It's a joke," said Ellie, quickly. She gave a half-fake-sounding laugh, hoping she'd save face. "Yep. Inside joke," added Duncan.

Julie looked confused, but she decided to not ask questions. "…OK, whatever," she said, looking to her sister. "Anyway… Chloe, you remember our switchers, right? The 900's?" Ellie perked up at the word 'switcher', looking terrified. "Of… course I remember them," replied Chloe. "Well… we're down one." "Oh, gosh… Sold?" "No. Killed." "What??" Ellie's engine backfired. "Wh-what??" she squeaked. "Oh my gosh… Was there a derailment? Were they… What did I miss??" stammered Chloe. "Well, you saw the slug coupled to 119, didn't you?" asked Carla, serious. "The what…?"

Ellie froze, putting two and two together about the strange car coupled to the cyborg Geep. "Slug…? Diesel tender… Switcher trucks… switcher…" Julie stopped, and was about to ask if Ellie was alright before she was cut off by the sound of the little switcher throwing up. Both Geep sisters winced. "Jeez… Are you OK?" Julie finally asked, after a moment. Ellie was still recovering, so Duncan stepped in. "She's… from preservation. We're totally out of the loop…" he explained, rubbing Ellie's side as dark brown engine oil spread across her pilot. Julie felt awful. "…Yikes, I'm sorry. I should've warned you." "It's… ugh." croaked Ellie, tears rolling down her face. "That's so inhumane!" she cried, sobbing. "That poor engine… Oh, Watty Piper, if I ever get out of here, I'm going to pray every Sunday like a good little diesel…" "…Don't mind her," said Duncan, apologetically. "She's still pretty young minded." Julie cracked a small smile at Ellie's praying, then sighed. "It's OK," she said.

Duncan proceeded to look for some shop towels to clean the oil off of Ellie's pilot, while Carla continued her explanation to her sister.

"So…" began Chloe, quietly. "Who was it…? The… slug." "Tamara," replied Julie. "The one the managers bought surplus from the pulp mill in Squamish." "Great rails above… That's so awful." Duncan had found some towels, and climbed back up onto Ellie's front platform. "I'm sorry for your loss, Julie," he said. "Thanks," replied the SRY engine. "We're pretty much used to it at this point, but… thanks." Ellie was repeating something quietly to herself, while Duncan cleaned up the mess on her pilot. "Still… it's fucked up," he said. "I'm afraid it… gets worse, actually." replied Julie. "How could it possibly get worse?" asked Chloe, in disbelief. "Don't say that," said Ellie, quietly. "When you say that, it gets even more worse."

Julie went on. "Well… You guys saw 119. Before Carla was sent off for her… rebuild, I guess, she was derated to a master engine." "Master engine?" asked Chloe. "It means…" began Julie, sighing. "It means she's perma-coupled to the slug out there, and half her generator's energy goes to the slug's traction motors. It's called 'master and slave' by the railway. 119's the master, and the slug is the slave." Chloe recoiled in horror. "That's disgusting!! What an awful name… so half her power's getting sucked off by… Tamara's body?" "Basically." Chloe was horrified. "I'm… at a loss for words," she said. Ellie sobbed. "…If it makes you feel any better," said Julie, "Carla doesn't feel it. She's gone." "Oh, right… the rebuild…" "Yeah. It's why we call that thing 119 instead of our sister's name." "R-right…"

"Anyway, speaking of… Before Carla got sent away, when she first got mated to the slug, she was still herself," continued Julie. Chloe looked worried. "And…?" "Well… She started complaining about hearing voices, and… how she couldn't get the slug to pull all the time, and how she didn't want to be a master, so…" As Julie trailed off, the only sound was Ellie retching again. Duncan rubbed the side of the little switcher's hood, trying to help her feel better. Chloe and her sister looked at each other, then back at her. "…I know I asked before, but are you OK?" asked Julie, concerned. "I'm sorry… this is just so gross to me," said Ellie weakly. "And she heard a voice of the fallen… that's…" she trailed off, shivering in fear and horror. "That's what the rest of us thought, anyway," said Julie, sighing. "We never really got a chance to find out for sure, before… well…" Chloe shuddered, remembering what Jordan had told her before she left the island with Ellie. "Her rebuild... the ECO program?” "Yup." said Julie simply.

The three engines were silent. 119 came into view again, continuing to shunt freight cars in the yard robotically, with the slug engine that used to be Tamara coupled to its rear.

Chloe looked at 119's face. She looked at the blush marks on its cheeks just like her own, the once-bright, unblinking eyes, the number boards, the paint patch over where "CARLA" used to be written… and remembered.

She remembered back before she moved to the Island, when she still belonged to SRY. She remembered how often she would team up with Carla, and how well they worked as a team on light transfers and industry runs.

She remembered Montana, the day all the Rail Link engines got their five-chime horns, and how Carla picked the wrong one just because she liked the sound better.

She remembered when she was still in Burlington Northern green, sitting nervously in the repair shop as her high short hood was chopped down, with Carla being there through the whole process to comfort her.

She remembered when she met Carla for the first time, both sisters fresh from the factory, coupled face to face as helpers on a Northern Pacific heavy freight train.

"Sis…"

"…Yeah?" said Julie, looking at Chloe, who was silently watching 119. "…I'm sorry I left." Julie recoiled. "Don't you dare," she scolded. "You're E&N now, you belong there. And it wasn't your choice, either way." "Still," began Chloe, but she trailed off. "Think about it, Chlo," cut in Duncan. "What if it was you who got rebuilt like 119?" Chloe blinked. "I'd… rather not." "Duncan!" cried Ellie, starting to tear up again. "Don't say that…" "Yeah, that wasn't cool to bring up," agreed Julie. Duncan felt awful, and apologized, while Chloe was silent again. She was thinking about a lot of things at once. "I miss home," said Ellie suddenly, quietly. "I just wanna save Gloria and get back home to where I can't get turned into a slug, or a re-power, or… put in a museum…" "Save-- what?" asked Julie. She looked to Chloe. "OK, let's drop the horrific explanations--" "Please," replied her twin. "…Yeah, let's do that. What's going on? Save Gloria?" Chloe looked at her sister, serious. "It's why I came back," she said, sounding determined as she remembered her and Ellie's mission. "We're going to save an engine." Ellie perked up. "Gloria, the last running Royal Hudson," she added. Julie blinked, and immediately looked doubtful. "You're joking, right? She's all the way in Squamish." "We're not kidding," chided Duncan. "And… how in the hell do you plan to do that, exactly? You'd have to go through the city, and there's at least three yards between here and the outskirts!" "Illusions," said Ellie, simply. And with that, she shut her eyes and focused, just as Julie looked back to ask her what she meant. Her eyes met not a small bright-blue switcher, but an even smaller, black, ancient-looking steam engine.

Julie's jaw almost hit her pilot. Chloe giggled as Ellie quickly changed back, and Duncan breathed a silent sigh of relief about how Ellie could still focus and hold an illusion spell even when she was distressed. After a moment of speechlessness on Julie's part, Chloe began to explain briefly. "Duncan gave us magic crystals that we can use to disguise ourselves as different engines," she said. "Like, ones that wouldn't get caught." "And, record for most words I've never heard together in a sentence, broken," deadpanned Julie. "No words." Chloe couldn't help but giggle some more. "By the way!" added Ellie, feeling a lot better now that they had changed subject. "You know the joke I made about turning human earlier?" "…It wasn't a joke, was it-" began Julie, but she was cut off by the switcher, who now stood behind Chloe as a short, blonde, soft-looking human girl, wearing a blue jersey emblazoned with a large white "2", a pair of dusty jeans, and heavy-duty work boots. "It wasn't a joke!" she chimed with a big smile, doing a small 'ta-da' pose between the rails.

Julie now truly had no words. "I know, right?" laughed Chloe, again seeing her sister's expression. "OK, so… you have magic illusions and transformation powers now, OK. I'm guessing you can do the same stuff, huh Chloe?" "Yup! I'm not as good at it yet, but I can do it!" replied Chloe, shutting her eyes and preparing to use her crystal as well. Julie made a strange sound. "N-no, that's OK! I'm gonna save the questions, that's enough weirdness for one lifetime. Day. I mean day." "…You OK, sis?" "Yeah, fine, just… Suddenly my sister and her new friend-" "Cousin!" corrected Ellie cheerfully. "…Cousin have magical transformation powers," said Julie. "It's weird, and it's a lot to process. And on top of that, you're going to rescue a steam engine? What're you even rescuing her from?" "Becoming stationary," explained Duncan, standing next to Ellie. "Like, no steam, ever again." "Oh god, they're de-comming her?" asked Julie, gaining a look of fright. "Isn't she in pretty much perfect condition?" "It's what she said in her letter to Jordan…" said Chloe, sadly. "Yeah. Perfect shape or not, it's what the museum people want to do," said Duncan. "But we're gonna… 'borrow' Gloria. Forever. Like, forever-forever, so they can't do it," added Ellie, in a determined tone. Julie looked thoughtful. She hadn't thought her sister and the newcomers were serious at first. "…Well, jeez. Crisis all of a sudden," she said. She felt bad for doubting her sister, but decided to move on rather than apologize. "Do you guys need some help?" she continued. "I can round up the others, and we might be able to get you across town on a transfer or something…" "Wait. You guys still do the Downtown run?" asked Chloe, surprised. "I thought that ended before I left." "It started back up after CN reopened the Burrard Inlet line. We run stacks to Port Metro and back here now." Chloe looked confused. "…Stacks? Containers? Gosh, things have changed." Julie laughed. "It has been a while since you've been here, huh?" she teased. "Yeah, we started running stack trains. Trading tonnage with CP and CN, mostly." "Ahh, gotcha," said Chloe. "Well… Gosh, if you could get us across the city on one of those, it'd make the first part of our trip a whole lot easier." "Well, I'll talk to the others and see what we can do," said Julie. She looked out of the shed, spying 119 again. She frowned, then looked back to her non-rebuilt sister. "Sis, Ellie, Duncan, you three stay here, okay?" She was met with agreement from all three other parties. "Like, seriously, don't bother leaving. 119's still out there, it'll just come and shove you right back in if you even try to turn a wheel. I'll see if someone else can come and see you, and maybe keep watch." "You're the best, Jules… Thanks," said Chloe. "'Course, sis," replied Julie, as she started to roll forward out of the shop building. She stopped short and looked back at her sister. "Oh, and…" "Yeah?" The mainland Geep smiled. "Good to see you again, Chlo. Seriously, it is." The island Geep smiled right back. "Same to you, Jules… I'm glad you're doing OK." "That's a word for it," chuckled Julie, as she revved up her engine and rolled away, into the yard.

Chloe sighed as her sister left, smiling to herself. Ellie, on the other hand, was remembering the conversation at length and looked distraught. "…I need marshmallows," she said, quietly, and Duncan began to rifle through his messenger bag. Ellie's stomach gurgled after a moment, prompting her to look worried. "Or… m-maybe not," she said, and Duncan stopped. The comparatively enormous GP9 looked back at the human couple. "You okay, you two?" she asked, concerned. "I'm shocked, honestly," said Duncan. He didn't show it, but he was still trying to process all he'd seen and heard. Ellie, meanwhile, approached Duncan and pulled out a bright blue The Little Engine that Could plush from his messenger bag. Hugging it closely, she quickly, wordlessly climbed up onto Chloe's pilot. "Ellie? What are you…" began Chloe, surprised, as her cousin laid down on the cold metal and curled up into a ball in front of her face, shaking like a leaf.

The big Geep sighed gently, unable to really do anything to comfort her cousin. Fortunately, Duncan was on the scene and climbed up after his girlfriend, sitting next to her and gently stroking her back.

Silence reigned once more, for what felt like a long time.

Cebu/Malalpasqua

There are no scheduled boats from Palawan to Cebu island, so I had to overnight and fly from Puerto Princessa to Cebu city. Still dorming for economy, and the cheapy in PP was a loser, not on the main street as advertised,but down a gravel alley. Even the tourist police couldn’t find it for me. My driver was wild over losing an hour searching and when he finally phoned the place tore a strip off them. Sold online as the Commune hotel, the tiny sign said C hotel. My email and a cell phone patch got us there, but it was a 6 bed dorm not 4, filled with mosquitoes, down a dingy twisting hallway. Just an overnight crash and I was away at 6 am to the airport. Security was a joke, the scanner operator was on his phone, and the metal detector missed my wallet chain and coins. Must say that Cebu Pacific Air is good, on time , newish planes, and their tiny office sold me my Cebu/ Manila flight for April 1. I had dreamed of taking another overnight ferry to Manila, but it arrived at midnight in the very unsafe part of town, 16 hours before my flight. Any screwups and I would miss my flight, and endure another airport layover before a cross Pacific flight. So , it’s fly to Manila and get on the China Air flight for the long ride home. In Cebu the taxis all wanted a scalpers price, and yes the yellow cabs were 100 pesos more than the white. Assured they had meters, the cabbie wanted 200, as he’d been in a 100 cab que for 2 hours. Sometimes you just pay, and he proved to be an interesting character who got me right to my hotel. Nice 6 bed dorm, ac, cheap, and right down the street from the immigration office where I needed to extend my visa the next day. The young girl in the next bunk was on a year trip, with 7 months gone in SE Asia, and she told me of places I’d never heard of, islands way off the beaten track. I later researched them and they had no tourist infrastructures like hotels and restaurants, just bring your own food and sleep with the dogs on the beach. I don’t do that anymore... She went to the street stalls next door to eat and was satisfied: I went and saw the usual BBQ chicken, all of it. You could get BBQ feet, and grosser, BBQ guts neatly skewered, or if that was too much, a very thin chicken broth presumably made from the leftovers. I ate at Chow King, a chinese fast food outlet in the mall, across the street from the”Chicky-Oink” cafe. Breakfast was at McD’s, the only place open. A blogger had reported that the visa renewal was quick at Guisano mall and sure enough with minimal delay(first in line) I paid my 3000pesos and in 20 minutes had a clean police record and a 30 day extension. This takes a week in Manila. Celebrated with doughnuts and a Mcflurry ( the mall opened), the last junk food for a while.

Cebu to Malapasqua island was easy, a Grab car, an AC bus, and a pokey bangka. We were an hour getting out of the suburbs, onto a seaside road up a string of beaches. More sand and palms, some possible resorts(if you had transport) then inland through endless coconut palm plantations on flat plains. Finally into Daanbayantayan, then Maya Port, for more paperwork and 2 cold coconut water drinks. I do hav e the right attitude, leaving my big bag in the office and going to the shady palalpa where the boatmen loafed, for that delicious cold drink, in the breeze off the open sea. Some upright German tourists stood in the heat wearing their full packs , as if that would make the boat happen. When it did come in they rushed to the dock, only to wait while the locals disembarked, and the boatmen went to B.S. with their buddys. Only when the crew wandered to the boat did I retrieve my bag and walk the plank. Literally a 6 inch plank 10 feet long from the stone pier down onto the heaving narrow pointed foredeck. At last we cast off, poled the bow around( no reverse?) and puttered very slowly out. The steersman and the mate kept throwing anxious glances into the open backed engine compartment. No wonder. The steering was the wheel and shaft from a car, connected to the rudder by a complicated network of bamboo pipes, the throttle was a string hand held by the steersman, and the shift lever was a wonderous blend of rusty welded rebar and bamboo. Nothing fell apart ,and we disembarked at Malapasqua dock up the same floppy plank.

Malapasqua is a tiny island, 1 k across and 5 long, nowhere more than 10 meters above the sea, mostly just flat. A premier dive site it is crammed with dive shops and hotels, the beaches packed with bangkas, and the “streets” the original goat paths through the buildings. Also the usual fleet of bandits who overcharged me, but i got my moneys worth with my bulky pack forward, and me with my half ton daypack piled on a Honda 50. Glad I ignored the advice to”just walk it. It’s not far” as it was a 5 minute motorcycle trip on paths that would have had me lost in a moment. Up (on foot) the cement stairs and down to Thresher Cove dive resort, a 3 star operation with a private beach, excellent restaurant, ac dorm, hot showers, and a huge salt water pool, just off the beach. the cabins were pricey, the dorm just 240pesos ( $6), and main meals 250, tasty and well made . Front staff were friendly and professional, the restaurant wait staff attentive and fast, and the ambience was pleasant. Came for 3 days, stayed for 6.

I’d been watching the weather and saw a front coming, so I booked a snorkle trip the very next day. 14 divers, one snorkeler(me). A 2 hour run in a fast Bangka to a pinnacle island with a hurricane ravaged lighthouse where the fringing reef had good coral, and lots of colourful small fish. i saw crown of thorn starfish for the first time, and a new fish with barbels like a catfish, red side stripe on silver, and a big black dot by the tail. The usual cleaning stations where parrot fish indicated their willingness by floating snouts upward and hovering while wrass nibbled off parasites. The bouyant water was the warmest since Indonesia, and I drifted along happily. A yellow blob caught my eye and when i dove down 5 meters i found a “diver down” marker. No diver attached. Treasure! I sold it to a diver for 1000 pesos and paid for my snorkle trip. No sharks, but the drift out over the dropoff was spooky as it was not just sheer but undercut. Who knew what lurked below, or out in the endless depths? I stayed in the 5 meter zone. A poor lunch, then another dive, for more exploration. A hundred snorkle dives, and I’ve seen something new every time. True to forecast, the wind jumped up and we bashed back in flying spray, arriving just at sunset. Any day spent on a

boat is a good day, and this one was very good.

Yesterday was pouring rain, and for the first time I pulled out my little folding umbrella, put on my swimsuit, and trekked to the trailhead where a local woman serves philippino food. Breakfast is small and expensive here at the resort, so I go native. Fried eggs, noodles or rice, passed on the overcooked fried fish, and had the chicken in soup( a leg with a bit of carrot and potatoe) and enjoyed the soup made of tiny beans, (Mongo beans) like lentils. A full meal for $1 or $2, the price of a cup of coffee at the resort. When the rain guit, i explored the next cove village and found where all the rooster calling was coming from, dozens of fighting cocks staked out. Rained again so I retired to a palapa to blog.

Today is sunny again, very humid, and my first stop was the pool for a refreshing dip. Water is air temp(35 degrees) but somehow it cools. After breakfast I walked the nearby beach where new boats are being built, full sized Bangkas, framed and planked with plywood. Smaller ones still use an adzed out log for a keel, with 2 by 4 frames. There are no more good trees, so bow and stern, gunnels and,strakes are scarfed and glued. Pretty poor wood, using outside cuts with the bark knocked off. There are several boats sideways up the beach, tossed there by the last typhoon. A framed 30 footer lies abandoned in the weeds, just needing plywood, and an engine(Mitsubishi diesel truck engines are the favorite). Perhaps someone went broke and abandoned the project. There were a couple of ships with minor damage also left, and I wondered why they built new ones rather than repair. i found shade under an old tree, loafed in the welcome sea breeze, walked up a tiny hill to see a strangler fig fallen in a tangled mass of live limbs, and finally hoofed home in the rising heat to the pool. One more day here, then off to Bantayan Island Monday. I’ll explore there then go south to Bohol island(the chocolate hills) and Camuguin(dormant, i hope, volcanoes) island. I’d like to get to Siargo island further out but it’s a four day return trip for a 4 day vist, so I might just come back and end my trip here. Whatever looks good, i’ll try it. Feeling the end of these travels approaching, and the trip has been good, both in places seen and experiences I needed. Travel really is broadening, and the challenges make me more flexible. Of course it will be good to get home,a nd I feel happy to return to Lasqueti.
