Engine Lubrication and Why it’s Important for your Diesel Engine

Lubrication provides and prolongs the life expectancy of an engine. Without the proper lubrication, the engine will succumb to overheating and malfunction quickly. Lubrication with effective maintenance and monitoring can extend the life of your engine.

How does a diesel engine get lubricated?

The process of lubrication begins in a sump for an internal combustion engine. This sump is known as an oil pan. From here, the oil pump pulls the oil via an oil strainer. During this process, large contaminants get separated from the fluid mass. The oil then passes through a filter.

Different filters perform differently in engines. The ability of a filter to remove debris depends on several factors such as surface area, pore size, and the filter’s depth. The filtered oil then gets pumped through various parts of the engine such as pistons, rods, bearings, etc. The oil gets pulled down at the bottom of the sump due to gravity. The cycle repeats to provide lubrication to the engine.

Vital Functions of lubrication for your diesel engine          

Industrial lubricants perform the three most vital functions in diesel engines - cleaning, reducing friction, and cooling. The objective is to protect the engine from the damage caused due to contaminants, heat, and metal-to-metal contact.

 The reason lubricants for trucks and fleets can perform these functions is because of their formation. Lubricants consist of base oil, viscosity modifier, and additives. These components work in tandem to keep the diesel engine efficient and trouble-free to continue working for a prolonged period. Here are a few functions performed by industrial lubricants that enable your engine servicing while on the run.

Corrosion and Acid Control

Acids build-up in the engine can lead to its corrosion. It is detrimental to the engine parts. The engine parts can disintegrate as a result of acid formation. It can lead to engine failure. The detergents can neutralize these acids. Some car or truck engine oil with high-performance inhibitors contains corrosion inhibitors to protect the metals.

Handling Contaminants

Sludge and soot are the byproducts of combustion. If the truck engine oil does not contain treatments, these contaminants can grow and block the oil passage. Soot and sludge can accumulate in engine parts. Therefore, make sure that your diesel oil contains a high-performance dispersant. It will prevent sludge and soot from forming large components. Thereby preventing disruption of your engine's functioning.

Cleanliness Maintenance

The lubricants in diesel engines can break down due to heat and oxidation. If the oil breaks down in the engine it can form large deposits. These deposits can accumulate on the surface of pistons. Reducing Oxidation

One way heat can be detrimental to engine lubrication is through oxidation. It can result in increased oxidation leading to sludge formation in oil. It increases the thickness or viscosity of the oil. To prevent this viscosity change, lubricants should contain antioxidants. Heavy-duty engines run hotter; it becomes more crucial for lubricants for trucks and fleets to do their job.

Viscosity Consistency

Managing viscosity is crucial. Consistency ensures that all components work seamlessly. The stability of diesel oil determines how well the oil can maintain its original viscosity. If the viscosity changes during normal operations, there is a chance you may lose durability.

 Heavy-duty diesel engines can cause a lot of pressure and stress on lubricants. It can affect the stability of the oil. If the viscosity breaks down then engine parts can be put at a major risk.

 If the temperature is low, the wax in base oils can separate to form crystals. It can prevent oil flow. To prevent this from happening, pour point depressants get added to the lubricants. It enables the oil to get poured at low temperatures without crystals interlocking and blocking the oil flow.

 Reduced Aeration

If the lubricant gets aerated, it can cause a power & pressure loss in the sump. Air will cause the lubricant to foam. It will restrict the lubricant to protect moving parts. It can lead to cavitation and catastrophic engine failure. To minimize this issue, foam inhibitors can be used in lubricants for trucks and fleets.

An Offer She Can't Refuse

Summary: Slick's latest money-making scheme lands her in hot water with The Cule (but what did she expect?)

“97…98…99…100!”

Slick hummed happily as she set down the crisp bills. The likeness of Benjamin Franklin, neatly stacked on the table, stared back at her like the portrait of a proud grandmother. She smirked to herself. Her plan had gone down a lot easier then she really expected. She really pulled a number on them this time. And the added profit didn’t hurt matters either.

She had been contemplating what to do with her bonus when a pounding on the front door nearly made the stack topple over.

“Slick! Slick, we know you’re in there!” More knocks, now more forceful. She heard a rattle that could only be familiar intruders trying to jam the locked door open.

Shit. Without thinking, she pulled the pile against her chassis like a trainlet. She dove into the closet, the nearest nook within sight. In its dark, the money slipped through the cracks of her arms, losing the neatness it had had on the table. There was a shatter of glass followed by a click as the door was forced open. Slick held her breath. Maybe they’d neglect the closet. Maybe they’d take a look around the shed and get bored and leave. Maybe they weren’t that mad about—

The closet door swung open with seemingly enough force to tear it off its hinges. Six forms loomed above Slick like fearsome gargoyles. A total of twelve eyes, fiery red with rage, pierced through her. She gave her proudest grin, vainly hoping that would be enough to diffuse everything.

“Oh hi guys. Nice weather we’re having?”

Rusty yanked Slick onto her wheels, a strength she had never seen or felt from the steamer. “The mob? The actual mob?!? This is a new low; even for you, Slick.”

The bills flew in all directions. “I, uh… they made me an offer I couldn’t--?”

Suddenly Slick felt her skates leave the ground. Greaseball snarled, her fists clenching around the oil truck’s collar. “Where did you take them?!?”

“That information is going to cost you,” Slick retorted lamely.

Dinah nudged her wife’s shoulder. “Greaseball,” she commanded. 

Thank Starlight, Slick thought, I’m not going to die like this. The diesel set her back down. She had little time to do much more than sigh in relief before Dinah’s hands were around her neck, thumbs pressing into her jugular.

“Where. Are. Our kids.”

Slick rasped, trying to grasp air. “Alright! They’re fine! I left them by the river bank, under the bridge, three miles East of here! You have enough time to grab them before the Brake Van arrives! Don’t hurt me, please.”

Dinah released her. Slick decided then she was never going to take breathing for granted ever again. The six dashed back out the door. Only Electra stopped for a moment to issue one last warning. “We’ll be back.”

The door slammed shut as forcefully as it had come open. And once again, Slick was left with her earnings, now scattered across the floor, Ben’s visage now seemed to mock her like a peanut gallery.

By that time the next day, Slick would be miles from Station 24, a brand-new identity under her belt, and eyes flitting over her shoulder impulsively. The rolling stock she had fallen in with were not the type to forgive and forget. They did not take easily to being backstabbed; and the longer she stuck around the more danger she would be in. Also, she supposed, that mobster brake van, whom she imagined had shown up to the pick-up point and found himself with ten grand down the hole would not be a friendly path to cross either.
