Today's a triple-set of blue d12! One is an ordinary d12, but the others have special characters: one has the signs of the Zodiac, and the other has symbols of the heavenly bodies in the solar system. 🟦♉🪐

2022 Dice Advent Calendar

Happy holidays, everyone! It's finally December, which means I can at last reveal something I started working on weeks ago: a handmade Advent Calendar full of nothing but gaming dice!

I prepared the whole thing as a surprise for the others in my household, but nearly all the dice are from blind-bags and were stuffed in the boxes in such a way that even I don't know for sure what we'll discover*!

I thought it'd be fun to document our haul here as each box is opened. I'll be tagging everything as #Dicemas2022. Can't wait to see what treasures fate (RNGesus?) chooses to bestow upon us! :)

* - I do know a FEW things ahead of time, but I'll leave exactly what and why as my little secrets until the time is right!

Advent Calendar: Dec 3

Box #3! These checkered ones were a pain in the butt to put together, which is why there's only two of them lol.

Another single-die day, but this time it's a hollow metal ELDRITCH HORROR d6. 🦑 Or perhaps just a regular octopus. But let's be real, that's a Cthulhu if I ever saw one.

Box #2! Just a li'l one today. :3

Only one die this time, but it's a d20 made of RUBBER. It's very bouncy! ↕️ It's also got a sort of subtle gold glitter embedded in the black background, which looks cool.

I sure hope all the other singles end up being this good lol

Box #10! After that windfall streak of big boxes, we're back to a single.

And *drumroll* it's the d6 of the rubber set! ↕️ Nothing new, per se, but have to appreciate a bouncy new addition to the collection~

Advent Calendar: Dec 6

Box #6! Another twofer~

First, a green d20 with very subtle swirls. I think it's fairly nice, which is why it didn't even occur to me that this might be from the "cursed" set! 💚 I stared at it for an embarrassingly long time, wondering if it was supposed to be some kind of really lightweight stone, but sure enough my notes claim we're supposed to have opened an "ugly" d20 today lol. So yes, it is indeed a plain old acrylic die, but at least it's a pretty one. :)

More importantly, the second die today was this BEAUTIFUL liquid core d6. It has these really fine white particles of dust/glitter suspended inside, which float around like a slow-mo snowglobe or a projection of stars or something when it's rolled. ✨ The resin itself is a subtle blue-gray which really adds to the night sky effect, and the font on the numbers is cool, too! Contender for new favorite of the whole bunch so far.

Advent Calendar: Dec 4

Box #4! I love the triangle boxes. (Don't tell the others, but they're my favorites.)

First up is a percentile (10-sided, with extra 0's) die! However, it's from the "cursed" set (I clustered them in the first half of the month), so it's just clear resin with some inclusions. 🤷 It looks like a few strings of moss or some other plant material, plus a clump of coppery metallic foil? At least the font of the numbers looks fun!

Next, a hollow metal d12 with snowflakes on the faces! ❄️ I was SO excited to see this. I debated for a long time whether to buy this exact set for myself because I loved the look of it so much, but I put it off just in case we ended up getting some as part of the calendar. And sure enough...! The picture doesn't do it justice, btw--it's gorgeous in person. It's also quite big!

...And now for something COMPLETELY different! Third and last die of the day is a transparent blue d8 with a FLOATING EYEBALL suspended inside!! 👁️ It rotates freely, and the pupil always faces directly up, "pointing" at the number the die has landed on. The edges of the die are also very sharp. Extremely cool.

Side note: we now technically have a full set of gaming dice from this calendar (all seven from d4 to d20), though it's quite an eclectic bunch haha.

Advent Calendar: Dec 1

Box #1! It's a big 'un, which--spoiler alert--means we get multiple dice today! The number (and type) of dice will vary each day based on the shapes of the boxes. (The snowflake, for the record, is just decoration.❄️)

Let's see what's inside!

Appropriately, the very first die we drew out was a d6 with a little snowman inside!! ☃️ I swear this wasn't planned, and in fact according to my notes, this die originated from the set of "cursed"/"ugly" dice that I added last-minute to pad out the numbers, haha. The vast majority of the dice in this calendar should lean toward more "premium" styles, but I thought it'd be fun to throw in a handful of cheaper reject dice for variety. As far as I'm concerned, that gamble has already paid off. Just look at this li'l guy! ☃️☃️☃️

Next we have what looks like a resin d12 with some pale pinkish, holographic foil/glitter inside. It has a couple of pieces of more starkly colored glitter on one side of the die--like a single dark green flake right under the 12, and a red flake near that... they may even be two halves of a tiiiiny rose? 🥀 I'm not sure what to make of this one, to be honest. It's possible I forgot to change something in my notes, because this looks and feels like another "cursed" die despite supposedly not being one? We'll find out later on if there was a mix-up, I suppose! Either way, from most angles the holographic effect still looks kind of nice, so it's not the ugliest die we could have pulled. :)

Third die today is a solid metal d4 with a gear pattern. ⚙️ NOW we're talking!! The lighting in our kitchen gives the photos a yellowish cast, but the metal is actually colorless--kind of a dark silvery gray. This one's quite heavy, and I like the look of the truncated corners.

And last up, we have a hollow metal d10..... with TINY DRAGONS behind each number!! 🐉 The color is kind of brassy and the edges are all very smooth and round. I don't recall ever seeing this particular pattern anywhere in my prior Etsy browsing, so I'm very stoked about the possibilities that implies! This die is my personal favorite for today, for sure.

So all in all, quite a spread for the first day, exactly as I'd hoped!! :D This should at least give an idea of the range of dice that might be expected from this project--from cheap novelty to high-end custom styles--though I can guarantee there are still a few surprises in store.

Box #24!

Photo courtesy my housemate, since we're currently out of town! Today's dice are a hollow metal dragon d4 in the same style as a bunch of previous dice 🐊, a shiny black d8 with red numbers 🕷, and a d6 with red kanji instead of numerals! ⛩️

Box #22! The third huge box! Get ready for d10s!!

... :/ I do like these little dragons, but now we have a d% AND 2d10 in the same style.🐊 At least the two d10s are different colors from each other, but still.

Next is another black caltrop. 💥 Again, it's cool, but we already had one just like it in a slightly different color, so. :(

Something I'm NOT bummed about is getting another of the yellow/purple half-and-halfs! 🌓 This d% makes the third one! I do have to wonder why this is one of the ONLY fancy resin varieties we've been getting (I was expecting few if any duplicates), but at least it's a good one.

Speaking of, there was a d% from the hollow snowflake set, too! ❄️ Still super pretty. I haven't mentioned, but these are lighter/daintier than most of the other hollow metal dice, and as a result they make a lovely little jingling sound as they bump into the other dice. :) I love them.

Thankfully there was at least ONE thing I would consider a little more unique in this box: this smooth black d10 with blue numbers! ⚫ It's nice and compact and heavy, like the purple d% from a while back. It's also extremely shiny--the faces are so reflective you can literally see yourself in them.

And finally, of course, our fourth bonus die for Hanukkah. 🪙 Love seeing these little dudes in amongst the rest of the pile lol.

Box #19! The second fiddly little checker pattern box.

These hollow dragon dice keep on coming! Today it's a copper-colored d20!! 🐊

And our bonus tiny gold die, of course. 🪙 Today it's the d10. :)

Advent Calendar: Dec 17

Box #17! Fell behind a day again lol oops

First, the d4 from the rubber set! ↕️ We're at 6 out of 7!! Nice to have a d4 that doesn't just plap down flat on the table. Despite its shape, this one is even bouncier than you'd expect.

And our second die today is a little metal d12 with extremely glittery blue faces. (It's actually a darker shade in person than it is in the photo.) The metal on the edges and in the numbers also has that one cool rainbowy effect! 🌈 C h r o m a t i c O r b ~

Box #11! Another single, but tomorrow will make up for it~

AND IT'S A D20 FROM THE HOLLOW METAL SNOWFLAKE SET! ❄️ This one's a coincidence, I promise! But I'm thrilled about it anyway! I just think these are really pretty, okay

Advent Calendar: Dec 9

Box #9! First of the three H U G E boxes. Big 'n tall! This one's got FIVE dice in it, all ten-sided.

First up is a sharp-edged resin d10, half opaque purple and half bright yellow with holographic foil inside! 🌓 I personally tend to dislike transparent dice with an opaque "floor" or "background" behind the inclusions, but this one is more like a half-and-half design, and I think it works! Very pretty imo--a much better example of what I expect from this kind of glittery holo style.

Next is a solid metal, incredibly spiky caltrop d10. 💥 The font on the numbers is a little blocky and hard to read at a glance, but the overall shape of the die is pretty fun. :) The silver is also EXTREMELY shiny, making it hard to photograph lol

Third is a simple but gorgeous purple metal percentile die. 🟣 There are no blue lights in our kitchen btw--that reflection is the sunlight from the window being turned bright blue through some natural effect of this rad purple coating. Certainly wouldn't mind a full set like this!

Then we have another solid metal d10 with each face in the shape of a pink heart/flower petal! 💗 It's pretty cute, and only subtly different from a really common style of metal dice I've seen around a lot. (I have a blue set that looks just like it, in fact, but with plain polygons instead of hearts.)

And finally, there's this... uh, almost kind of creepy Christmas-themed percentile die? 🎅 Each face has Santa and a Christmas tree in the background, but the design is kind of cramped and Santa has scary, coal-black eyes lol. I wasn't expecting to get THIS many winter-themed dice in the calendar, but I guess it's technically appropriate, so.

Advent Calendar: Dec 8

Box #8! Another four today!

...So uh, there's no easy way to say this. There were two more of the weird holographic-with-a-blurry-flat-rose dice in today's box?? 🥀🥀 Remember how I said I wasn't expecting the d12 from Day 1 to be one of the cursed dice? This confirms that it wasn't one! So supposedly these are all from an expensive style, though they sure don't... look or feel like it? I hate to be harsh, but they feel like cheap acrylic and the inclusions are way off-center. I just hope there's not an entire set of them in here for some reason. :S The single one was charmingly ugly, but I dunno about having a whole handful of the same kind;;;

(Btw this means that we're still yet to see TWO from the cursed set, since the d12 is now unaccounted for!)

Today apparently has a bit of a theme overall, actually, because next we got a d12 that matches one of the earlier dice as well! It's sharp-edged, teal resin with pink flowers, like the d4 from the other day. 🌸 My attempt at color correction was a bit more successful this time, so you can better see what they were going for lol.

And to round out today's pattern of adding to previous sets: the d4 of the glittery liquid core set!! ✨I could try and leave everyone in suspense, but I'll go ahead and admit this entire set is in here, too. :} I didn't know what to expect from the blindbag, so I wanted to guarantee there was at least one spectacular set of dice to be found.

Advent Calendar: Dec 7

Box #7! Big! Box! Big! Box!

First up, the d10 from the rubber set! ↕️That makes 3 out of 7! :}

Next is our "cursed" d8--a swirly red acrylic with unpainted (but fancy) numbers. However... this one appears to be a little more cursed than usual, because the face where the 8 should be is completely blank? ♦️ #2spooky!

Also from the cursed set, we have a d4 with a green, reptilian eye inside. 🐍 Unlike the floating eyeball from a few days ago, this one is stationary, and can't be seen from the other side. Interesting that they decided to make it centered on the 1, though I suppose having a dragon's eye trained directly on you does tend to be a sign of pain coming your way lol

And just to round out our oddly threatening day, why not throw in a metal d12 covered in blood spatter?🩸It's nice and heavy, and it also has tiny little crossed weapons beneath each number, making it clear this is a die meant for a true barbarian.

And that's it for week 1! Seven days, seventeen dice so far. I for one am extremely pleased with how things are turning out. :3 We haven't even hit any of the biggest boxes yet, and we're nearly done with the "ugly" set (only missing the d10!), so things will only get more exciting from here~
