From Spidey to Serial Killers: Jon Watts to Direct "Murder 101" Movie
Tumblr media
A thrilling new movie based on the smash-hit podcast "Murder 101" is swinging into development. Amazon MGM Studios just snagged the rights, and at the helm is none other than Jon Watts, the mastermind behind the epic Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy. Yup, you read that right. The director who brought us the web-slinging adventures of Tom Holland is now diving into the dark world of real-life murder investigations. But wait, there's more! Watts isn't just directing, he's also producing alongside his wife, Dianne McGunigle, and Stephanie Lydecker from KT Studios. Now, let's get down to the juicy details of "Murder 101." This film isn't your typical whodunit. It's based on the true story that unfolded in a small Tennessee town, a story that captivated millions through the power of podcasts. Remember those high school students in your English class who dissected every detail of a classic murder mystery? Well, "Murder 101" takes that concept and cranks it up to eleven. A group of real-life students, along with their dedicated teacher, Alex Campbell, found themselves facing a real-life horror story, a serial killer on the loose in their own backyard. Using their knowledge of criminal profiling, these brave students and their teacher became an unlikely investigative team. And guess what? Their efforts led to the capture of the actual serial killer! So, how does Jon Watts fit into this picture? Well, Watts is no stranger to taking unexpected turns. He's proven his talent for directing action-packed blockbusters with the Spider-Man films. But with "Murder 101," he gets to explore a suspenseful and thought-provoking true story. This project is a perfect match for Watts' diverse skillset. He can bring the same level of captivating storytelling and character development to "Murder 101" that he brought to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus, with McGunigle and Lydecker on board, "Murder 101" has a dream team behind it. McGunigle brings her producing expertise, honed on projects like "Atlanta" and the upcoming "Wolfs" starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Lydecker, the mastermind behind KT Studios, is a true crime powerhouse. Her podcasts, including "Murder 101," have amassed millions of listeners, proving her knack for captivating audiences with real-life mysteries. With a compelling story, a talented director, and a powerhouse production team, "Murder 101" is shaping up to be a must-watch for true crime enthusiasts and movie buffs alike. While there's no release date yet, keep your eyes peeled for updates. https://youtu.be/_d9a1XR0C_I Read the full article

Atlanta Season 3 Release Date Officially Set
Tumblr media
Atlanta Season 3 Release Date Officially Set Atlanta season 3's release date is officially set for March 2022, bringing the celebrated comedy series back after a four-year hiatus. Created by Donald Glover, the FX dramedy centers on college dropout Earnest "Earn" Marks as he seeks to turn his life around upon learning of his cousin Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles making a rise through the underground rap scene in the titular Georgia capital. Atlanta also explores the lives of Earn's on-again-off-again girlfriend/baby mama Van & Paper Boi's eccentric right-hand man Darrius.
Donald Glover Leading Atlanta To Success
In addition to primarily writing and occasionally directing the series. Glover leads the cast of Atlanta alongside Zazie Beetz as Van, Brian Tyree Henry as Paper Boi and Lakeith Stanfield as Darrius. Having first premiered in 2016. The series has been a critical darling; scoring rave reviews for its unique storytelling, rich characters & Glover and Hiro Murai's direction. Glover would even go on to become the first African-American director to bring home the Primetime Emmy award; for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series with Atlanta season 1 and three Emmy wins for season 2. FX & audiences are hungry for more as the network went on to renew Atlanta for seasons 3 & 4. After a prolonged development, audiences have exciting news.
Nearly two months after unveiling the first teaser for the new chapter. The official Atlanta Twitter account, revealed that season 3 has been set to premiere on March 24. The new premiere date comes after the show went on a four-year hiatus.
Development on Atlanta season 3 has seen a much rockier path than that of its predecessors; with filming suffering multiple delays. First from scheduling conflicts in Glover's increasingly busy schedule with his Childish Gambino tours & roles in Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Lion King. Despite this delay, FX still went on to renew the show for season 4 with plans to film back-to-back. Postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and would finally kick off in early 2021 in Europe. With filming on season 3,  having wrapped this past August, the timing certainly lines up for Atlanta to return in its March 2022 release date. With Atlanta season 3 officially coming after a four-year hiatus. It will be interesting to see whether the wait results in a large viewership boost for FX; or see it struggle to recapture the same level of popularity. The cable network hasn't seen huge ratings in the past few years, though the first two seasons of Atlanta proved to be a major hit alongside FX's long-running titles; It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and American Horror Story. Only time will tell how the new season performs when Atlanta season 3 premieres on FX and Hulu on March 24.
Available for streaming on Hulu.
The 10-episode third season marks the first time Atlanta will be available for in-season streaming on Hulu. The first two seasons, which aired before FX became part of Disney & before Disney took control of Hulu; but it can still be streamed on Hulu “We are thrilled to have Atlanta back with a new season on March 24th,” said Eric Schrier, President, FX Entertainment. “Once again, Donald Glover, the producers & the stellar cast have delivered another signature season; synonymous with the excellence that makes Atlanta so great.” Taking place almost entirely in Europe, Season 3 finds Earn (Donald Glover), Alfred /Paper Boi’ (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield) and Van (Zazie Beetz) in the midst of a successful European tour, as the group navigates their new surroundings as outsiders, and struggle to adjust to the newfound success they had aspired to.
Produced by FX Productions, & executively produced by Donald Glover, Stephen Glover, Hiro Murai, Stefani Robinson, Paul Simms and Dianne McGunigle.
Season 3, originally ordered in June 2018, was postponed to accommodate Donald Glover’s busy feature schedule. Filming then further delayed by the pandemic as production shut down in March 2020. Glover & Co. then proceeded to shoot Seasons 3 and Season 4 back-to-back. Season 3, filmed primarily in Europe; finished filming this past summer when production on Season 4 started in Atlanta. “All the scripts for that season have been written; & I absolutely adore the scripts for both seasons,” FX Chairman John Landgraf said in August. In its most recent season in 2018, the 14 Emmy nominations for Atlanta’s second season were the most of any comedy series. Through its first two seasons, Atlanta has won five Emmy Awards as well as two Golden Globe Awards, two AFI Awards, Peabody, PGA, WGA, TCA, NAACP and Critics’ Choice Awards. Read the full article

Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/la-la-land-stranger-things-atlanta-sweep-2017-pga-awards/
'La La Land,' 'Stranger Things' and 'Atlanta' sweep 2017 PGA Awards
“La La Land” is easily sweeping up all the awards this year, but Netflix’s “Stranger Things” jumped in on the action along with “Atlanta” for the 28th annual Producers Guild Awards (PGA).
The musical comedy-drama went up against “Arrival,” “Deadpool,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures,”  “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “Moonlight,” but was able to come out the winner which was presented by Dustin Hoffman.
The guild recognized the candy-colored musical with its Darryl F. Zanuck Award for theatrical motion picture production Saturday, a prize that often precedes the best picture Academy Award. (Last year was an exception, when “The Big Short” won the guild award, while “Spotlight” got the Oscar.) The nominees for the guild’s top film prize echo Oscars’ best picture nominees this year, with the exception of “Deadpool,” which made the cut with producers but not the film academy.
But the guild’s celebration at the Beverly Hilton Hotel of the year’s outstanding film and television productions had a decidedly political tone, as President Donald Trump’s ban on refugees and visitors from several Muslim countries triggered protests in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle and other cities.
“Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions,” singer John Legend said as he introduced “La La Land” at Saturday’s untelevised ceremony. “Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. I want to specifically, tonight, reject his vision and affirm America has to be better than that.”
Ezra Edelman, producer and director of “O.J.: Made in America,” which claimed the guild’s documentary prize, echoed Legend’s sentiments.
“Please keep telling stories that are about our humanity,” he said.
Other winners Saturday included “Zootopia” for animated feature, “Atlanta” for episodic television comedy and “Stranger Things” for episodic TV drama.
Presenters included Justin Timberlake, Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Nicole Kidman, Jeff Bridges, Kerry Washington, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Veteran producers James L. Brooks, Tom Rothman and Irwin Winkler received special awards.
Dustin Hoffman presented the night’s top prize. As producer Marc Platt accepted for “La La Land,” he said, “The power of cinema cannot be denied and has no borders … We must believe love can change our lives, much as it can change the world.”

Ambition and Acceptance with D.C. Pierson
First Draft Episode #202: D.C. Pierson
D.C. Pierson, comedian, writer, filmmaker and author of The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To and Crap Kingdom, and co-writer and star of indie comedy movie Mystery Team, talks about getting more vulnerable with age, using his fiction to explore the gap between what we expect of the world and what turns out to be true, and being sick of not finishing things.
Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode
Dan Eckman and Meggie McFadden are two comedians D.C. has worked with for years, in part on an adaptation of D.C.’s first book, The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To
D.C. loved the cover of his dad’s copy of Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
Rubber Soul was the one Beatles album D.C.’s family had on cassette or CD
In conjunction with the documentary The Beatles Anthology, detailed compilations of Beatles ephemera were released in three double-CD sets: Anthology 1, Anthology 2, and Anthology 3. D.C. listened to these more than the regular Beatles albums, which means he listened to a lot of alternate versions of songs and random studio chatter. He credits that with jumpstarting much of his curiosity as a storyteller.
While D.C. attended the Rita and Burton Goldberg School of Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch Institute of Performing Arts, one of his teachers was Charlie Rubin, who wrote for Seinfeld and In Living Color, and was a showrunner for Law & Order: Criminal Intent
Derick was D.C.’s improv group which formed at NYU, made up of D.C. Pierson, Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover, Dan Eckman, and Maggie McFadden
Mystery Team was a fully independently-made movie that the Derick Comedy group made, which had a screening at Sundance, and led the group to move to Los Angeles
Upright Citizens Brigade improv theater is where D.C. honed his comedy and performing chops during and after college
The concept for Mystery Team is basically: what if characters from Encyclopedia Brown never really grew out of their idealized, 1950s childhood, and kept trying to solve crimes?
Donald shared what he learned writing for 30 Rock (with Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Matt Hubbard, Kay Cannon) with his Derick Comedy friends to help them write a tight script for Mystery Team
Nathan Rabin, who wrote for The A.V. Club at the time, wrote a glowing review there for Mystery Team that D.C. credits with helping the movie gain momentum
A passing encouraging comment from comedian, actor, writer, and musician Eliza Skinner gave D.C. the boost he needed to start writing a book
Dianne McGunigle, manager and a producer of Atlanta, was D.C. agent at the time that he wrote a first draft of The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep… and she read it quickly, a favor for which D.C. is forever grateful
Gerry Howard, who edited David Foster Wallace’s The Broom of the System and Girl with Curious Hair, as well as Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life, was the editor D.C. worked with for The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep… D.C. was starstruck to be going to the offices where Sloane Crosley—essayist and writer known for I Was Told There’d Be Cake, How Did You Get This Number and her newest, Look Alive Out There—also worked.
The Los Angeles Times gave The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep… a lovely review
D.C. was inspired by psychologist Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success
One of D.C.’s favorite English teachers sent him Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham provided a quote that summed up what he likes to explore in all his writing
To me, Crap Kingdom is asking, “What if Lord of the Rings was deeply uncool?”
Stephen King’s On Writing is one of the writing books that has inspired D.C. in his fiction process
One of D.C.’s earliest imrpov teachers, Owen Burke, referred to the following passage from Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, on the endurance of human thought and creation: “We shed as we pick up, like travellers who must carry everything in their arms, and what we let fall will be picked up by those behind. The procession is very long and life is very short. We die on the march. But there is nothing outside the march so nothing can be lost to it. The missing plays of Sophocles will turn up piece by piece, or be written again in another language. Ancient cures for diseases will reveal themselves once more. Mathematical discoveries glimpsed and lost to view will have their time again. You do not suppose, my lady, that if all of Archimedes had been hiding in the great library of Alexandria, we would be at a loss for a corkscrew?”
D.C. sometimes teaches at Writing Pad, a writing program offered online and in L.A./S.F.
