Last movie: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Last show (completed): I just finished watching the latest episode of Adventuring Academy with Brennan Lee Mulligan and honeyanddice. Other than that, Pirates of Leviathan.

Currently reading: The Dungeon Master’s Guide... perpetually. But I also have so much fic to catch up on; I ran into a wall reading and want to read so many things.

Currently watching: Foyle’s War, The Unsleeping City, Into the Motherlands

Sweet, spicy or savoury: Sweet

Craving: Nothing. I made so much French onion soup yesterday, and now I am filled with soup and bread and I had a beer and I am sated on just about every level.

Coffee or tea: Coffee, strong and black, though I have started drinking green tea at night, or when I’ve had my fill of coffee for the day but still want something nice and warm.

DiAmorte - The Red Opera - Review

Irgendwie scheint bei mir wieder der Prog Hammer zu hängen. Gestern hatte ich schon ein Album vorliegen welches den Massstab schon mal ordentlich vorlegt für die kommenden Prog Werke. Auch wenn ich es wirklich ziemlich schwer finde über Alben dieser Stilrichtung zu schreiben, den handwerklich sind die Meisten eh über jedem Zweifel erhaben. Musikalisch dann schaut es wieder ein wenig anders aus. Nicht alles was kompliziert und verzwickt dargeboten ist, ist dann auch für mich zugänglich, so dass ich es überhaupt verstehe.

Nun liegt ein weiterer schwerer Brocken vor mir. DiAmorte kommen aus Chicago und machen bombastisch schweren, ziemlich theatralisch angehauchten symphonischen Progressive Metal. Mit The Red Opera liegt mir nun das Debüt vor welches vor Songideen nur so strotzt. Hinter dem ganzen steckt ein gewisser Drake Mefestta. Der sich auch gleich vier Sänger resp. Sängerinnen um sich gescharrt hat und zudem die Unterstützung von Michael Lepond (Symphony X) und Markus Johansson (Sylencer, THEM und noch anderen) gesichert hat. Das Album ist astrein produziert und donnert nur so aus den Boxen. Ich hab es schon geschrieben, dass Album verbratet Ideen in den zehn Songs, andere hätten da vermutlich ein Leben lang genug Material für zwanzig Alben. Aber irgendwie stolpert Drake genau ein wenig über diesen Ideenreichtum. Ich liebe ja den Symphonic Metal über alles, aber dies hier ist mir teilweise zu viel, progressiv halt. Zugänglichkeit schaut irgendwie anders aus. Ich würde hier den Spruch nach weniger ist mehr definitiv gelten lassen. Wer sich dieses Album zu Gemüte führt sollte sich Zeit nehmen, denn die Welten die sich hier öffnen nimmt man nicht beiläufig wahr. Es ist ein krasses Album geworden, welches ich mir wohl noch einige Male anhören muss um durchwegs zu realisieren was hier alles geschieht. Wer aber auf solch abgefahrenen Sachen steht, gepaart mit einer Zuneigung zu Rhapsody sollte unbedingt mal ein Ohr riskieren. Auch die Story geht in Rhapsody Richtung. Das Konzept handelt von zwei Königreichen die so gar nicht miteinander können.
