As per the data from Comscore, the percentage in January of US-Based users aged between 25-34 increases from 22.4% to 27.4% in April while aged between 18-24 years receives a downfall of 41.1% to 35.3%.

With 8.5 crores (85 million) users, Roposo provides a space where users can share posts related to different topics like food, comedy, music, poetry, fashion, and travel. It is available in 15 languages.

Roposo, a video sharing service backed by global venture capitalists Tiger Global and Bertelsmann as lead investors were sued yesterday before the Delhi High Court by T-Series, India’s leading music company for violation of the copyright in thousands of its songs.

T-Series asserted that Roposo has been violating its copyrighted content in a number of ways on the Roposo App including by illegally ripping/extracting copyrighted songs belonging to T-Series and several other music labels from the phones and devices of its users, especially from their Apple Music and Google Music accounts. They further contended that Roposo was illegally compiling its songs into a Music Library for use by users and brand owners alike and is also egregiously using the songs within video advertisements and contests run by Roposo and creating effects/filters with T-Series songs amongst other violations, all without taking any license from T-Series.

When contacted in this regard the legal team of T-Series confirmed that a suit had indeed been filed for copyrighted infringement against Tiger Global, Bertelsmann, and Glance InMobi in relation to the services offered by them through Roposo but refused to comment on the matter since the same is sub-judice before the Court.

When contacted on this development Neeraj Kalyan President at T-Series stated, “It’s a matter of shame for global major venture funds that they are backing music pirates for commercial gains. It has become fashionable for such pirates to seek refuge under ambiguous provisions of law and claiming to be an intermediary or are entitled to any safe harbour protection given the number of direct instances of infringement by Roposo and others like them.  Their actions are contradictory to their bogus claims as their actions and offerings in the App clearly show commercial synchronization, encouraging users to upload videos containing infringing content, curation of our music in an audio library as well as monetization of our songs directly by Roposo. Having admitted before the court to having provided our content in the music library and ripping/extracting our songs, to now say that the content is user generated or that Roposo is an intermediary is just misleading, an eye-wash and a futile attempt to justify their crimes. In fact, as I understand the law also requires that even intermediaries, which Roposo is not, to conduct regular due diligence of its platforms and prevent such violations proactively and not wait for a takedown notice. None of what Roposo is doing is intermediary behavior and instead requires a specific license under copyright law. We expect a company backed by global investors such as Tiger Global and Bertelsmann and operated and run by global names such as Glance InMobi to be well aware of the law and considerate of the market realities, especially of the fact that  virtually every other similarly placed service including ‘Sharechat’, “Moj”, ‘Facebook’, ‘Tik-Tok’, ‘Instagram’ etc has taken a license from us for such features and offerings. We have zero tolerance policy against any kind of infringement, however, we are always open to license our content and will be happy to initiate meaningful discussions in this regard.”

U.S. TikTok Alternatives Grow 361% As Government Ban Looms

While ByteDance maneuvers to avoid a ban from the United States government, consumers have turned their attention to alternative video-sharing apps in case TikTok is forced to shutter in its third largest market. As talk of a ban ramped up from mere conjecture during the week of July 27, four of the largest challengers contending to be the top social video-sharing app in the U.S. saw their installs collectively grow 361 percent compared to the week before, Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates show.

The State of TikTok

To date, TikTok has generated more than 2.3 billion installs globally from the App Store and Google Play, including Douyin for iOS in China but excluding installs from third-party Android marketplaces. It started the year strong with the best quarter ever for any app in Q1 2020, but its monthly downloads declined in June and July following a ban in its largest market, India, and the threat of a similar fate in its third largest market, the United States.

In July, the app saw 65.3 million installs worldwide from the App Store and Google Play. This was down 25 percent from nearly 87 million in June, a figure which, in turn, was down 20 percent from 108.7 million downloads in May.

Downloads in the U.S. have also trended downwards in the last three months, with TikTok hitting 6.3 million installs in July. This was down 16 percent from 7.5 million in June, which had dipped 8.5 percent from 8.2 million installs in May. To date, TikTok has generated slightly more than 190 million downloads across the U.S. App Store and Google Play, or about 8 percent of the app’s lifetime installs globally, not counting its Android version in China.

A Shifting Landscape

ByteDance’s competitors have benefitted from the uncertainty around TikTok’s future, and the largest alternative video-sharing apps to emerge are Triller, Zynn, Dubsmash, and Byte. These collectively saw nearly 1.5 million installs during the week of July 27 after the White House threatened to remove TikTok from U.S. marketplaces. This figure represents growth of 361 percent from the week of July 20, when those four apps saw an aggregate of 316,000 installs.

Triller and Byte saw the most substantial week-over-week growth, climbing 1,227 percent and 418 percent, respectively. During this time, Triller reached No. 1 among the top free iPhone apps in 50 markets including the U.S. on August 1. Previously, Byte had seen a spike in downloads during the week of July 6 when the U.S. government initially hinted at an impending TikTok ban. During that period, its installs increased by 275 times the week of June 29.

Zynn had been removed from the U.S. App Store and Google Play in June, but returned on July 21 just in time to capitalize on the challenges facing TikTok. Its installs grew 93 percent W/W during the week of July 27.

Dubsmash saw a smaller boost of 69 percent during that time period, though it has the highest lifetime downloads out of the cohort of TikTok rivals in the U.S. To date, it has accumulated an estimated 41.6 million installs.

Other apps have only recently joined the fray of competition: Clash launched in beta on July 24, and Tsu is available on an invite-only basis to early adopters. It’s too early to tell how much of TikTok’s massive user-base these newcomers will be able to attract, and they’ll have more established video-sharing apps such as Triller and Dubsmash to compete with.

More Opportunities for Competitors

Although TikTok has yet to see an outright ban in the U.S., its situation has parallels to what happened after it was removed from India’s App Store and Google Play on June 29. During that week, competitors Roposo, Zili, and Dubsmash collectively saw a 106 percent W/W boost in downloads. In the three weeks following the ban, the three saw a 155 percent increase when compared to the three weeks before.

Since ByteDance lost access to its largest market, alternative video-sharing apps Snack Video and Likee have climbed the charts there. In July, both ranked in the top 10 most downloaded non-game apps in the world at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. This was likely due in part to their popularity in India, where Snack Video hit 22.4 million installs and Likee saw about 10 million that month.

As ByteDance works to resolve its current situation in the U.S., its competitors now have even more opportunities to grow their own audiences. However, as the playing field grows crowded with so many choices, developers will have to continually hone their user acquisition and app store optimization strategies as they vie for consumers’ attention.

India's ban on Chinese apps: What next? - Economic Times BENGALURU/NEW DELHI: Monday’s interim order by the government of India blocking 59 apps could potentially reset an entire ecosystem built by a plethora of Chinese mobile apps in specific categories, including short-video, where TikTok and Likee have come to dominate the markets. These apps are among those affected by the order, handing an almost overnight boost to local rivals like ShareChat and Roposo — who have been riding on the anti-China sentiment.The interim order, issued on Monday evening, has been sent to all relevant intermediaries, including the app owners, those that facilitate access to the app (App Stores), and internet service providers and telecom networks. The ByteDance-owned TikTok, for instance, has already complied with the order, voluntarily taking down its app Monday night from the Google Play Store and Apple’s AppStore.TikTok will also likely geofence its app, cutting access to 200 million users it claimed to have prior to the ban. Its executives will have to attend a hearing of government officials by a committee from the Home Ministry, Ministry of Electronics and Information and Technology (Meity), Law Ministry and CERT-In, according to sources. “In all likelihood, this will be a routine meeting, where they are given a chance to make their representations before the order is confirmed,” said a person aware of developments surrounding the ban. Multilingual Indian video app Roposo raises $10M from Tiger Global and Bertelsmann

India has 22 official languages, which often presents a challenge for businesses that want to scale across the entire country. Video-sharing app Roposo, however, uses that to its advantage by offering content in several different regional languages. Based in Gurgaon, Roposo announced today that it has raised a $10 million Series C from returning investors Tiger Global and Bertelsmann, bring its total funding so far to $31 million. Roposo will use new funding for hiring, product development, and user acquisition.

Tiger Global first invested in Roposo’s Series A round and also returned for its Series B, according to Crunchbase. After an Indian startup funding spree, Tiger Global hit pause on new investments there for a couple of years before reportedly closing a $3.75 billion fund this year to focus on India, the U.S., and China. Roposo’s funding news comes a week after facility management company Facilio, another Indian startup, announced that it also received funding from Tiger Global.

Roposo originally launched as a fashion-based social network in 2013 before pivoting to videos in August 2017. It now claims 7.5 million monthly active users, 250,000 user-generated videos, and 160 million video views a day.

Co-founder and chief executive officer Mayank Bhangadia tells TechCrunch that Roposo’s pivot came from “a gradual evolution of the platform from a fashion social network into rebooting as a complete social video network to enter the next big level of game play.” Users still share videos about fashion, but now it is one of several topics, including music, comedy, spirituality, tech, travel, and current events (Roposo organizes videos into about 25 interest-based channels).

Roposo currently claims a total user base of 25 million. One obvious question is how the app plans to keep their attention as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram each aggressively promote their live-streaming video features.

One of Roposo’s key advantages is its focus on multiple Indian languages (it offers content in 10 so far), which gives it an edge in smaller Indian cities and towns. Bhangadia says it also differentiates by creating a TV-like viewing experience and offering editing tools that make it easy for people to start broadcasting (about 30% of Roposo’s users have created content). Video creators can also make money based on how much user engagement their content generates.

It is usual for app developers to buy source code for cheap and work on their own customisations and improvements to quickly launch an app. But in this hurry to cash in on the negative sentiments against TikTok, the creator of Mitron, which is hoping to offer an alternative for the Chinese short video platform, seems to have missed out on making necessary changes to the source code of TicTic, a TikTok ripoff created by Pakistan-based coding company Qboxus. A cyber expert now says it is risky to use the Mitron app in its present form.

Satyajit Sinha, cybersecurity researcher at Counterpoint told indianexpress.com: “It’s risky to use Mitron app given it doesn’t have any additional firewall or software security on top of the source code. The privacy policy is weak and that can put user data at risk in the long run.”

Irfan Sheikh of Qboxus from Lahore, the company that sold the source code to Shivank Agarwal — reportedly an IIT Roorkee student — too told indianexpress.com that “Mitron app has privacy issues because the app developer has not uploaded the privacy policy.” He said they do not encourage their buyers to just put it out there for public use as it as it is.

All attempts to contact Agarwal proved futile. The Mitron app now has over 5 million downloads with a 4.7 rating. Interestingly, the Qboxus website showcases Mitron as one of its best apps.

A few days back Sheikh had rubbished Mitron’s claims of being a “made-in-India” app. “We expect our customers to use our code and build something on their own,” he said. But Mitron’s developer, Sheikh added, has taken the exact product — TicTic, changed the logo and uploaded it on their store. “There is no problem with what the developer has done. He paid for the script and used it, which is okay. But, the problem is with people referring to it as an Indian-made app, which is not true especially because they have not made any changes,” Sheikh said.

According to Sheikh, Agarwal reached out to them to buy the source code of TicTic app and later launched it has Mitron in India. Agarwal purchased the code for $34, roughly Rs 2,500.

“Our company’s main goal is to build clones of trending mobile apps and we sell the code on code canyon. We have clones of Tinder, Badoo too available,” he said. Sheikh clarified: “Mitron has used their own servers so the data is stored on Mitron server and we have nothing to do there.”

Sinha said that while there is no issue in the source code coming from Pakistan, it should never have been used as it is. Given there are no changes to the algorithms there are chances that if Qboxus wants to sell the source code to a third party they can easily do that and then tap into the database of Mitron users, the expert explained.

Sinha also warned that there could also be a possibility that the company might push out malicious code or malware in a future update giving them the direct control of the app. He further said any app that asks for access to phone’s camera, microphone and location comes with a huge risk and provides access that can allow such apps to monitor users 24×7. “Not just Mitron, any app that asks for access to the camera, location and microphone is risky to use, including TikTok,” Sinha said.

Sheikh countered that it is wrong to think Qboxus can put data of millions at stake. “In simple terms, Qboxus just sells the source code of trending or famous apps. Qboxus has nothing to do with that buyer app after the purchase,” he told indianexpress.com, adding that they just create and sell templates.

“It’s up to each buyer to add security protection measures according to their needs, and make some additional customisations.”

Sheikh said that while his company does push out updates to its apps, it is up to the developer to include it in his app or not. “We will push out updates to fix bugs in TicTic app and since Agarwal has bought the license, he will also receive the updated code notification in their email from the codecanyon. After that, it’s up to him if he wants to push that update into Mitron or not. In short, once you purchase the license from codecanyon, the buyer receives the updates lifetime free of cost without paying additional money.”

Sheikh said Qboxus has many Indian customers such as Follow, Kidstok, and Hottocks — available on Google Play store.

Sinha, meanwhile, suggested Google should have a set of strict protocols to be followed before an app is listed on the Play store to avoid issues like this in the future.
