Lauren Gambino at The Guardian:
Donald Trump on Tuesday declared that his administration was “just getting started”, boasting in a marathon address to Congress that his efforts to slash the size of the federal workforce, reorient US foreign policy and escalate a risky trade war marked the beginning of the “most thrilling days in the history of our country” as Democratic lawmakers protested with placards that read “lies” and “false”.
“America is back,” Trump declared, opening his primetime speech to a joint session of Congress, the first of his second term and the longest in American history. Republicans broke into a boisterous chant of “USA”. Throughout the address, which lasted about one hour and 40 minutes, a jocular Trump touted his administration’s “swift and unrelenting action” and praised the work of his billionaire adviser Elon Musk, who has led his administration’s efforts to dramatically downsize the federal government through his so-called “department of government efficiency”. “Thank you, Elon,” Trump said, gesturing to Musk, who was seated in the house gallery overlooking the chamber where Democrats waved paddles that read “Musk steals”. Trump seized the high-profile moment to defend his administration’s action during the first weeks of his return to power, including, according to his tally, nearly 100 executive orders and more than 400 executive actions. “The people elected me to do the job, and I am doing it,” he said, making no mention of the legal challenges that have stalled many of his actions and deepening fears that his trade war will plunge the country into economic turmoil.
Trump also expanded on his “America first” foreign policy vision, just days after a dramatic Oval Office meeting with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, spiraled out of control as Trump and JD Vance berated him over a perceived lack of respect. During his remarks, Trump recited from a letter Zelenskyy had shared earlier in the day, indicating that he was ready to return to the negotiating table to end Russia’s three-year war. The US had simultaneously received “strong signals” from Russia that Moscow was “ready for peace”, Trump said. “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” Elsewhere, Trump envisioned the US expanding. He declared that his administration was in the process of “reclaiming the Panama canal” and repeated his threat to take control of Greenland: “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.” With performative flair, Trump offered a sampling of initiatives he said Musk’s team had identified as wasteful, among them the creation of an Arab Sesame Street, “making mice transgender” and promoting LGBTQ+ rights in Lesotho, the African country he said “nobody has ever heard of”. “This is real,” he exclaimed, drawing laughs from half of the chamber. Trump claimed that Musk’s cost-cutting efforts had identified “hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud”. But his estimate vastly overstated the savings Doge says it has generated, a figure which itself is based on accounting that multiple reports have found is riddled with errors and distortions. Early in the night, as Trump bragged about the size of his electoral college and popular vote victory – “a map that reads almost completely red for Republican” – Democrats heckled and booed, prompting the House speaker, Mike Johnson, to bang his gavel and demand decorum. “You don’t have a mandate,” shouted the Texas representative, Al Green. When the congressman, who last month filed articles of impeachment against Trump, refused to be seated, the speaker ordered him removed from the chamber. Trump claimed a mandate for “bold and profound change”, though at 1.5 points his winning margin in the popular vote was historically narrow and three points less than Joe Biden’s four years earlier.
[...] Past presidents have used the first major speech as an opportunity to reach across party lines and offer areas of common ground. Trump did the opposite. He taunted his political foes, blaming his predecessor for the price of eggs and claiming his victory ushered in a wave of tech investments that wouldn’t have happened if Kamala Harris had won the election. At one point he called Joe Biden the “worst president in American history”, drawing applause from Republicans.
“Why not join us in celebrating so many incredible wins for America,” Trump chided stone-faced Democrats. At least a handful of Democrats walked out of the speech early. Trump celebrated his clampdown on the US immigration and asylum system and called on the Republican-led Congress to deliver additional federal funding to expand his border crackdown and extend his first-term tax cuts. Some Democrats held signs that said “Save Medicaid” to highlight the social safety net programs that could be at risk under a Republican budget blueprint to deliver Trump’s sprawling agenda. The president also ticked through many of his controversial actions, from renaming the Gulf of Mexico to making English the country’s official language, and banning trans women from women’s sports. “Our counatry will be woke no longer,” he declared. The speech was riddled with falsehoods and misleading claims, including a riff about millions of centenarians aged “110 to 119” receiving social security benefits. “We have a healthier country than I thought, Bobby,” he quipped, referencing Robert F Kennedy Jr, his recently installed secretary of health and human services, who leads the vaccine-skeptical “Make America healthy again” movement. The 15 guests who joined Melania Trump, the first lady, to watch the address included the widow and daughter of Corey Comperatore, the firefighter who was killed at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump survived an assassination attempt, as well as Marc Fogel, the American teacher Trump helped free from a Russian prison last month. Other guests were intended to highlight the administration’s policies, including family members of Americans killed by men in the US without legal status, and anti-trans advocates. There were poignant moments. Trump paused his remarks to sign an executive order renaming a wildlife refuge near Houston for an animal-loving 12-year-old girl who prosecutors say was killed by two Venezuelan men in the country illegally. Turning to another guest, 13-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, Trump directed his Secret Service director to make him an honorary US Secret Service agent. The House Democratic leader, Hakeem Jeffries, had encouraged his members to attend the address in order to demonstrate a “strong, determined and dignified Democratic presence in the chamber”. Many did attend, bringing fired federal workers and Americans who rely on social safety net programs threatened by Republicans’ budget proposal.
Last night’s SOTU-esque joint address from fascist felon Donald Trump was more of the same for him: the greatest hits of lies, distortions, calumny, and bigotry that wouldn’t be out of place at one of his campaign rallies.

In an appalling display of hyperpartisanship, Democrats remained seated and refused to clap for a young child battling brain cancer who was honored during President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress.
Democrats are facing heavy backlash over their response after videos of the moment quickly spread on social media.
Trump shared the inspiring story of 13-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, a brain cancer survivor who was being made an honorary member of the Secret Service.
The brave young boy says he dreams of becoming a police officer and was dressed in uniform while attending Trump’s speech as a special guest of the president.
As Trump shared DJ’s story, applause erupted throughout the REpublican side of the chamber.
However, the Democrat side remained seated and silent.
While Republicans stood and applauded the child, Democrat lawmakers appeared visibly unmoved by the moment.

Dad of Honored Cancer Survivor 'DJ' Daniel Says He Was Offered Cash to Leave Spotlight
What should have been a moment of triumph for 13-year-old Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel has become a source of immense stress and frustration according to his father, Theodis Daniel. On March 4, 2025, before a joint session of Congress, President Trump recognized DJ as an honorary U.S. Secret Service agent, an honor that left the young cancer survivor beaming with pride.
The achievement is a testament to DJ's resilience as he battles brain and spinal cancer, an ongoing fight since 2018.  But instead of celebrating, DJ's father says they find themselves caught in the crossfire of political backlash.
Since being diagnosed with cancer seven years ago, more than 900 law enforcement agencies have sworn him in as an honorary law enforcement officer in recognition of his strength and perseverance. But after the moment he received the Secret Service badge, the joy of the occasion quickly faded, overshadowed by immediate and harsh criticism.
Within hours of the honor, public figures and media personalities began questioning the legitimacy of the moment. MSNBC host Rachel Maddow criticized the recognition as a political stunt, while Nicolle Wallace framed it in the context of the January 6 riot, suggesting concerns about DJ's future in law enforcement.
DJ and his family also became the targets of harassing phone calls and online attacks with some individuals choosing to voice their disdain with venomous language.
A YouTube user named CharlieTuna said, "He's the freak in the circus show Trump turned his speech into."
Maverick X also alleged on the video platform, "DJ DANIEL is not some kid he is selected by them he is an actor." Then, the user took the time to research and dig up a picture of a younger child who appeared to be DJ making a rock-and-roll symbol with his fingers. Maverick X then accused the little boy of "making the devil horns."
TahitianTreatt wrote on social media, "symbolic nonsense... all of this is just meant to boost the self esteem of low self esteem having white folks. via making them believe they SAVED SOMEONE BLACK. ---- hey White America, Black America doesnt NEED you. i mean, you all can barely help yourselves at this point....thats why you all are slowly gettin outnumbered by immigrants lol".
Theodis, who is raising his son as a single dad, tells CBN News,  "We started getting calls, people calling to attack my son, calling him names. It's like these people don't care what he's been through. They don't care that he's fighting for his life."
The harassment goes beyond phone calls and voice messages. Social media platforms are flooded with cruel comments mocking DJ's connection to the president, ridiculing his police attire, appearance, hair and more.
"The online stuff is worse," Theodis added. "The things they say about him, the things they write—it's painful. But the part that really gets to me? It's that these people have no idea what he's been through. They don't care that he's had 12 brain surgeries. He's not some political pawn. He's a 13-year-old kid trying to survive. And they're bullying him like this?"
To DJ's father, the bullying and online attacks are fueled by the political climate surrounding his son's recognition. He believes those members of Congress who refused to acknowledge DJ and the other honorees set the stage for the backlash.

🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸 President Donald Trump @potus made DJ Daniel, a 13-year-old boy diagnosed with brain cancer, an honorary Secret Service @secretservice agent during his address before Congress on Tuesday night. The president introduced DJ when praising law enforcement during the speech, noting that he had always wanted to become a police officer. DJ, wearing a police officer’s uniform, stood proudly as the crowd applauded him. The president later asked his Secret Service director to make DJ an honorary agent. “DJ, we’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service,” he said as Curran handed DJ a badge. As Breitbart News reported, DJ became a national sensation last year after he was “honored by Alabama police with a ceremony naming him a deputy chief — bringing his total number of honorary law enforcement titles to over 900.” “Devarjaye ‘DJ’ Daniel was just six years old when he was diagnosed with brain and spine cancer, and has had to undergo 13 surgeries since,” the outlet reported in October of last year. “His father, Theodis Daniel, told KTAL his son is in a daily fight for his life, but enjoys dreaming about being a real police officer one day. That is why hundreds of law enforcement departments and agencies around the country and overseas have awarded him the opportunity to join them,” it added.

Trump Honors Lives Lost, Celebrates Everyday Americans, And Highlights Those Who Suffered Hardships Due To Biden's Policies

President Donald Trump honored many guests, especially those who represent key Trump administration accomplishments or priority issues, during his address to a joint session of Congress.
On Tuesday, Trump highlighted the stories of his VIP guests during his speech.
Trump’s address to Congress was a showcase of his administration’s commitment to border security, law enforcement and cultural priorities. His guests included first responders, families affected by crimes linked to illegal immigration, and those opposing transgender medical services for children.
Trump began by honoring Laken Riley, a 22-year old Georgia nursing student who was killed last year while on a jog by a Venezuelan illegal alien. Her sister and mother were present in the crowd.
“Laken was stolen from us by a savage, illegal alien gang member who was arrested while trespassing across Biden’s southern border and then sent to the United States under the heartless policies of that failed administration,” the commander in chief said. “It was indeed a failed administration.”
Trump went on to note that he signed the Laken Riley Act in order to increase immigration enforcement against illegals charged with certain crimes.
“Last year, I told Laken’s grieving parents that we would ensure their daughter would not have died in vain,” the president recounted.
“That’s why the very first bill I signed into law as your 47th president mandates the detention of all dangerous criminal aliens who threaten public safety. It’s very strong.”
Trump also honored the memory of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, who was murdered when she went on a walk to a Houston convenience store. Two undocumented immigrants from Venezuela have since been charged with her murder.
The president also went on to announce that he had renamed the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, located in Texas, in honor of Jocelyn and her love of animals.
“Across Galveston Bay from where Jocelyn lived in Houston, you will find a magnificent refuge, a pristine peaceful 34,000 acre for all of God’s creatures on the edge of the Gulf of America. Alexis, moments ago I formally renamed that refuge in loving memory of your beautiful daughter Jocelyn,” Trump said as he showed the signed executive order as he addressed the mother of Jocelyn.
He then praised his administration’s decision to designate some of the most dangerous drug cartels, including the notorious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, whose members were involved in the slaying of Nungaray, as foreign terrorist organizations.
“They are now officially in the same category as ISIS, and it’s not good for them,” Trump said.
Additionally, Trump mentioned Payton McNabb, an All-Star high school volleyball athlete, whose athletic career was cut short after she was injured by a transgender athlete (biological male) on the other team.
“He smashed the ball so hard in Payton’s face, causing traumatic brain injury,” Trump added. “I signed an order making it the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”
He also later highlighted how the “poison” of Critical Race Theory (CRT) had been removed from public schools.
He honored January Littlejohn as well. Littlejohn and her husband discovered that during the peak of COVID-19, their daughter’s school had secretly transitioned their gender dysphoric child without their permission.
Trump reiterated his administration’s push to ban public schools from utilizing transgender ideology. He stated that his administration will cut off taxpayer funding for institutions that engage in the “sexual mutilation of our youth.”
“You are perfect the way God made you,” he told children watching.
Trump also honored Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, a young boy from Texas who had been battling cancer most of his young life. He was given the surprise of a lifetime when Trump granted his wish by making him an official U.S. Secret Service agent.
“The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago,” Trump said. “Since that time, DJ and his dad have been on a quest to make his dream come true.”
“And tonight, DJ, we’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service Director Sean Curran to officially make you an agent of the United States.”
The news was met with a standing ovation from Republicans, and deafening chants of “D.J., D.J., D.J.” However, the majority of Democrat lawmakers remained seated and did not clap.
The president also highlighted the story of high school senior Jason Hartley, whose dream is to “carry on the family legacy of service” by joining the U.S. military.
Hartley’s father, grandfather and great-grandfather all served the country in the military. His father, who died in August 2018, also worked as a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy.
“That’s a hard one to get into, but I am pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted,” Trump said, surprising Hartley and his mother with his acceptance into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. As of 2022, the acceptance rate into the academy is 12%.
Trump also honored Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who was shot and killed during the July assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“It’s love Like Corey’s that built our country and love like his that will make it majestic again,” he said.
Melania Trump was joined in her push for the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a bill aimed at protecting Americans from AI-generated deep fake and revenge pornography, by 15-year-old Elliston Berry.
“They superimposed her (Elliston’s) face into pornographic content without her consent, solely to humiliate her. And although Elliston’s family contacted the social media companies for help, their efforts fell upon deaf ears. Ultimately, the fake images circulated worldwide,” the first lady had previously stated.
She was also joined by Haley Ferguson, a former foster child who highlights the foster care system through Melania’s “Foster the Future” initiative.
All the guests went on to share a heartfelt message to President Trump for all his hard work in helping their families.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything,” they said.

Darrell Lucus at Loud, Liberal, Christian:
Gooden then crassly declared on Twitter that he wasn’t about to allow anyone to disrespect Trump while he was around. This coming from a party that has tried to make free speech its mantra. Riddle me this, Lance. Would you sit idly by if this had been a Democratic president’s State of the Union, and a Democratic congressman ripped a sign out of the hands out of one of your female Republican compatriots? What you did is just as crass, vile, and unbecoming.  [...] Put simply, if Green’s behavior merited a censure resolution, Gooden’s behavior is even more so. After all, it encompasses everything the GOP has become since Trump came down the escalator, and illustrates why we call Trump and his acolytes “deplorable” and “weird.” By all rights, the Democrats should be calling the Republicans’ bluff. Unfortunately, later in the speech, the Democrats may have lost any chance to gain any traction from Gooden’s behavior. Trump highlighted D. J. Daniel, a 13-year-old who had dreams of becoming a cop before being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2018. At the time of his diagnosis, he’d only been given five months to live. Trump made him an honorary member of the Secret Service. With few exceptions, the Democrats stayed seated. Now, I make no secret that I despise Trump. But not standing up and applauding a little boy fighting cancer—a boy of color, no less—is a bad look, regardless of how you slice it. It would have looked far better if they’d stood up while holding up signs highlighting the steaming hypocrisy of Trump profiling little D. J. so soon after he and Elon Musk took a meat-ax to the cancer research that has allowed him to beat the odds. They knew D. J. was coming and had plenty of time to prepare a response. All they did was make it appear that this country has become so polarized that we can’t cheer for cancer survivors. There’s no denying it—the Democrats’ messaging problems come from a lack of infrastructure. We actually had a fairly robust infrastructure, but it got ripped away from us in stages. First, after a torrent of criticism for not doing enough to tamp down disinformation during the 2016 campaign, Facebook and Google tweaked their algorithms in a way that throttled the reach of the blogs that had become staples for the left. I saw this first-hand while at Liberal America and RDTDaily. In the name of dropping the hammer on the likes of Alex Jones, they harmed blogs who followed the rules. Granted, we rebuilt enough to harness the anger at Trump in 2018, allowing us to retake the House. But right as we were building momentum for 2020, the pandemic hit and severely crimped our ability to organize. Then in 2022, Elon Musk bought Twitter, and his twisted idea of free speech allowed so much bile to flow there that it was untenable for a lot of lefties to stay there—if for no other reason than our own safety. But that doesn’t excuse not being able to use the tools we have to fight back, especially in this day and age. In order to fight a demagogue like Trump, we have to tell people what we’re for. It shows we have a competing vision for the country. Granted, poll after poll shows that Trump’s tactics aren’t playing well. But we have to convince people on the fence to trust us.
Darrell Lucus is right: Most Democrats staying seated during the moment that Donald Trump mentioned Devarjaye Daniel, who got diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, is bad optics.

The most poignant moment during President Trump's address to Congress was when he referred to 13-year-old  Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018. DJ held aspirations to become a law enforcement officer.
President Trump made young DJ an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service.
DJ, who was seated in the president's guest suite with his father, seemed pleasantly astounded by the announcement. Following his new appointment, DJ proudly displayed his new certificate and was hoisted by his father for the crowd to see.
Chants of “D-J!” immediately erupted in the House chamber in response to the appointment.
But not all were affected by the act of kindness.
