Rogers, who has worked as the catcher for all of Skubal's starts, jogged to the mound at Globe Life Field to examine his batterymate. He investigated by poking just beneath Skubal's eye with his left index finger, and then, for no reason in particular, he slapped Skubal softly on the other side of his face with his right hand.
"I gave him a little love tap there," Rogers said.
Skubal couldn't help but smile.
"He's a beauty," Skubal said.
------
"I think we have a better relationship off the field than we do on the field," said Skubal, who spent two weeks with Rogers at the alternate site before making his MLB debut in August 2020. "That's not to say we don't get along on the field. It's just, that's how close I am with that guy."
-------
Before every game, Skubal and Rogers complete the USA TODAY crossword puzzle as part of their individual pregame routines.
...
Skubal has improved significantly at the USA TODAY crossword, thanks to lessons learned from Alexander and Rogers along the way, but he still asks Rogers for help.
"I'd say, every other day I need good help," Skubal said, "but some other days I can get it. Today, I got it by myself. Typically, if you can get going and get some clues, it helps you out. If you get stuck in one area, and then you get one word, it'll unlock like 15 words. He'll help me get the one. He's like, 'OK, this is the one that will unlock the puzzle.' And then I'll be able to do a lot of it."
Skubal and Rogers also exchange at least one text message every single day, whether the Tigers are in spring training, the regular season or the offseason.
It's because Skubal and Rogers play Wordle, a web-based game in which players have six attempts to guess a daily five-letter word that's the same for all players. They have texted each other their results every day for the past two years. There's usually lively banter between them, especially if someone doesn't get the word within the allotted six guesses.
-------
Skubal had talked about getting Rogers a gift at the end of last season for catching every pitch of his incredible campaign, much like Justin Verlander would buy a watch for his catcher after throwing a no-hitter. Before the follow-up season begins, Skubal delivered in his usual low-key fashion.
“He got a nice little gift on his wrist, a nice Rolex,” Skubal said Friday. “I just gave it to him the first day I saw him here.”
Actually, two watches.
As a left-handed pitcher with a 100+ mph fastball and a nasty changeup and slider, Skubal is arguably one of one. The watch he gave Rogers is one of two, with Skubal buying the other for himself.
------
The gift is a reflection of that trust. Since then, Rogers has been trying to find occasions to wear the watch, which he joked might be the most expensive thing he owns.
“I’ve been [in] ragged shorts and a t-shirt wearing it,” he said. “I’m wearing it every day. I just got engaged and we got engagement pictures, so I got to wear it last night and show it off a little bit -- hopefully not taking away from her ring. …
“But again, it means a lot to me, so I’m going to try to wear it as much as I can.”

#i know none of y'all care but they make me SICK. look at all this.#jake slapping him in the face right there on the mound. skubal thrilled to be slapped in the face by his catcher right there on the mound.#they do the crossword together every gameday. and by 'together' they mean that skubal does it and jake helps him every time he needs it#which is an incredibly apt pitcher/catcher relationship if i've ever seen one.#they text EVERY day. in-season where they see each other in person basically every day anyway? still gotta get the daily text.#offseason when they have a chance to relax and clear their mind from team stuff? still gotta have that daily text.#skubal bought them MATCHING ROLEXES that are 2-of-2#as in no other watch is like the matching pair of watches they have.#jake is so obsessed that he's wearing his everywhere. he wore it to take engagement photos with his fiancee.#like hey yeah i'm pledging my future to this woman whom i love and adore#and also i need to immortalize that love while ostentatiously wearing the symbol of my pitcher's love for me on my wrist.#y'all are missing out. they are going to make me lose my mind.#tarik skubal#jake rogers#baseball#detroit tigers#photo#quote

The Tigers won again today and knocked the Astros out of the playoffs!!!
Why I'm excited:
I like the Tigers (cat team + a good baseball pal of mine is from Detroit and a big fan), and them making the playoffs at all was incredibly unexpected & only happened as a result of a huge August/September.
This Tigers team is playing very unconventionally, in terms of roster management. Always fun to see an "off-meta" pick doing well.
This snaps a 7-year run of the Astros making the penultimate round of the playoffs or better. Tired of seeing them.
Astros are only 7 years removed from a big cheating scandal, so they're still kind of villains.
Let's go Tigers!!!

Hammerin' Hank Greenberg: A Legacy Beyond Baseball 🔨⚾
This May, as we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month, we shine a spotlight on Hank Greenberg. Known affectionately as "Hammerin' Hank," Greenberg's journey from the Bronx streets to the grand stadiums of Major League Baseball encapsulates the spirit of the American Dream. His storied career with the Detroit Tigers not only earned him a place among baseball legends, but also made him a beacon of hope and pride amid widespread discrimination against the Jewish community.
A five-time All-Star and two-time MVP, his exploits on the field were nothing short of legendary. The highlight reel of his career includes the breathtaking near-miss of Babe Ruth's home run record in 1938 when Greenberg hammered 58 homers. More than just statistics, these feats were a beacon of excellence at a time when antisemitism cast a long shadow over America and much of the world.
Greenberg's legacy was carved not only by his bat, but also by his staunch identity as a Jewish American. His decision to observe Yom Kippur and sit out a critical game during the 1934 pennant race spoke volumes, resonating far beyond the Jewish community and becoming a symbolic act of faith and identity.

World War II saw Greenberg’s values in action again as he traded his baseball uniform for an Army uniform following Pearl Harbor. His nearly four-year service interrupted what could have been the most productive years of his career, yet he returned to deliver one of the most dramatic moments in sports, a grand slam to secure the pennant for the Tigers in 1945.

His 1956 induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame celebrated not just a stellar playing career, but also his enduring influence as a symbol of courage and a breaker of barriers. This Jewish American Heritage Month, we honor Hank Greenberg: a man who swung his bat with the strength of a titan and stood for his community and his country with unwavering pride and bravery.

Today is National Bobble Head Day-

This is my collection of bobble heads, all Detroit Tigers. The guy in the yellow coat is Ernie Harwell, long time voice of the Tigers broadcasting.
I have even met Ernie a couple times and have his autograph. The balls on the top shelf have Tiger autographs from the ‘68 and ‘84 championship teams (not all the players) among others. ⚾️
Bottom right is a panoramic shot I took inside the old Tiger stadium while it was still standing.
Ah, good memories 🙂

BREAKING: the Detroit Tigers have lost all their outfielders in the Blair Witch woods. Last known survivors Kerry Carpenter (LF) and Akil Baddoo (CF) were seen on camera tearfully sharing a piece of beef jerky over a dwindling campfire.
