King Poseidon appreciation post!
I feel He is often very under appreciated, misunderstood (thanks myth literalism 😒) and just… not talked about enough. So it’s my job, legally, to yap about Him.
Epithets
Poseidon Asphalios - Secures Safe Voyage
Poseidon Basileus - King/Lord
Poseidon Domatites - Of the House
Poseidon Epoptes - Overseer/Watcher
Poseidon Gaieochos - Holder of the Earth | Poseidon Ennosigaios - Shaker of the Earth
Poseidon Genesios - The Father | Poseidon Genethlios - Of Kin/Kindered
Poseidon Hippios - Of the Horses | Poseidon Hippokourios - Horse Tender
Poseidon Laoites- Of the People
Poseidon Patrus - Ancestral Father
Poseidon Pelagaios - Of the Sea/Marine
Poseidon Phytalmios - Plant Nurturer
Poseidon Prosclystius - Who Dashes Against
General Information
Most people know Poseidon as the god of the ocean, but of course when looking at his epithets, he is the god of fathers/fatherhood, of the house, horses, earthquakes, and even the nurturing of plants.
His Family
He is married to Amphitrite, Queen of the Oceans. They have a son together Triton.
He is also known to be the father of Aeolus, of the winds, Despoena goddess of specific Arkadian Mysteries, and Proteus, an elderly god seal herder.
Some other offspring of note include: Charybdis the giantess whirlpool who is mothered by Gaia, Polyphemus the cyclops born of Sea Nymph Thoosa, and Thesus an Athenian hero born of Aithra.
His Symbols/Attributes
Obviously, the trident is His main symbol.
His sacred animals consisted of bulls, horses, and dolphins. Being the god of the ocean other sea creatures were also used in reference to Him.
Plants related to Him are pine trees and wild celery!
Homeric Hymn to Poseidon - Hymn 22
“I begin to sing about Poseidon, the great good, mover of the earth and fruitless sea, god of the deep who is also lord of Helkion, and wide Aegae. O Shaker of the Earth, to be a tamer of horses and savior of ships! Hail Poseidon Holder of the Earth, dark-haired lord! O blessed one, be kindly in heart and help those who voyage in ships!”
Orphic Hymn to Poseidon - Hymn 17
"Hear, Poseidon, ruler of the sea profound, whose liquid grasp begirds the solid ground; who, at the bottom of the stormy main, dark and deep-bosomed holdest they watery reign. Thy awful hand the brazen trident bears, and sea's utmost bound thy will reveres. Thee I invoke, whose steeds the foam divide, from whose dark locks the briny waters glide; shoe voice, loud sounding through the roaring deep, drives all its billows in a raging heap; when fiercely riding through the boiling sea, thy hoarse command the trembling waves obey. Earth-shaking, dark-haired God, the liquid plains, the third division, fate to thee ordains. 'Tis thine, cerulean daimon, to survey, well-pleased, the monsters of the ocean play. Confirm earth's basis, and with prosperous gales waft ships along, and swell the spacious sails; add gentle peace, and fair-haired health beside, and pour abundance in a blameless tide."
Poseidon & Myths
I’m someone who is big on how terrible Myth Literalism is. Poseidon is not his myths. No god is their myths.
Myths are stories that teach lessons, nothing more. He is not some terrible god or mean man. So imma get into my experience with Him!
Poseidon to Me
Poseidon has a very fatherly energy to Him, and I attribute that to His fatherly epithets as well as His many children.
At times His presence is very soft and gentle. Like a tender pat on the back for a job well done. A warm laugh of an enthused fatherly figure. Other times it can almost be suffocating. A tight chest pressure and weight on your shoulders, the gaze of a disappointed father.
However, He always means well.
Why pray to Poseidon?
Poseidon came to me while I was researching epithets, actually looking to see if there were any fatherly epithets. I was in the middle of combing through King Zeus’s epithets before I my brain focused on Poseidon. Writing Zeus’s list, all I could think about was checking Poseidon’s even though I wasn’t finished with my previous one. So I checked. Surprise surprise.
Since then I have consistently prayed to Him for things you’d ask a father for. Advice, comfort, just… His presence. All of which He provides. I live inland so I don’t see the ocean, but I spend plenty of time playing in rivers or lakes occasionally. I thank Him and King Zeus for the rain. I love horses, so I research them and learn about them. I thank Him purely for their beauty and existence.
Even if their domain doesn’t fully involve you, you can still worship a god. And it’s still so gratifying.
Ty for coming to my Poseidon Ted-talk. I just adore Him a lot and decided He needed a post on my page solely dedicated to teaching people about Him.

Aphrodite Day Blog Post <3
I have been wanting to make some posts based around topics for some time now, you guys can request topics or I'll discuss some that have been on my mind.
I am studying ancient Greek and Roman history, as well as being a practicing pagan, but i need to provide a disclaimer that I don't know everything there is on polytheistic paganism. I can only speak from my own experiences and from what I have learned (:
Secondly, I am Australian so you will most likely see these posts on your Thursday!
I will open with a Prayer:
Aphrodite, Venus, Beloved by All, Hear our love and our cries, the gifting of ourselves, Anadyomene, miracle, from the sea that you came, Wash over us with your presence, come hear our calls.
As we discuss your divine energies, and speak your names, hear us, Despoena, our gentle mother, Pandemos, shower us with your love for your people, Antheia, the blooming, come close to us.
Blessed Be
─ « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ─
Today I want to discuss a topic I have seen floating around on tumblr lately - Are the gods their own separate deities or are similar deities known by different names (e.g. mars and ares) the same god?
─ « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ─
Personally, I believe that all of the gods are divine energy that can be idolised (given an image) or worshipped with divine communication (divination) techniques. We will discuss this in the context of Venus. Personally, I believe that each name and Epithet of Venus are the same Her, they call come from the same Cosmic Energy that make Her. So other goddesses that were worshipped in the same way and shared the same reasons for worship: Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte, Aphrodite, Venus - I believe they are all different versions of the same goddess.
This means I believe that Aphrodite Areia (the warlike) is a slightly different version of Aphrodite Pandemos (of the people). This is why I use different epithets according to what I am praying about. I also think that the different societies that worshipped these goddesses needed her for different things; we see this in Rome where she becomes Venus and her warlike side is emphasised, in Mesopotamia she becomes Inanna and her fertility side is emphasised. All of these societies see her with the same facets: love, war, beauty, sex, fertility, justice and power. The Ancient Greeks feared her the most as the Goddess of Sex, for she controlled gods and men alike. Two lines in the Orphic Hymn to Venus allude to this:
"...Thy sway confesses, and obeys thy nod, awful attendant of the brumal God:"
"...Great sceptre-bearer of the Gods, ’tis thine, mortals in necessary bands to join; And every tribe of savage monsters dire in magic chains to bind, thro’ mad desire.
I love learning about the different facets of her, alongside learning about new goddesses that represent her values but did not come from the direct line of Inanna. I love the feeling of pure motherly love that I receive from her. To me she is many different facets and names that all come from the same Energy of Her.
I finish this section with a reminder that this is what I believe and if your pagan worship values something different thats perfectly valid!
─ « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ─
In Ancient Greece, the country of "Greece" wasn't a concept. The people usually identified with their towns and cities. This meant that a Goddess such as Athena, would not be the same Athena in another time. For example; in Athens, she was know as Athena Parthenos (The Virgin) - Acropolis takes its name from this epithet. In Argos, she was known as Athena Polios (Of the City).
The religion was also incredibly idolic - once an idol of the god/ess was made it was not allowed to move. They did not want to anger the god/ess by moving the item they worshipped as them. When a sanctuary or idol was made, a ceremony occurred BEFORE the sanctuary was made, and worshippers would bury offerings dedicated to the god/ess. This means moving the idol would cause extreme distress and feared wrath from the gods - it had to be on the ground that was consecrated.
As a result, each god or goddess was different according to each city you went to, some cities may have infused other cities gods with their own to create hybrids; - When Rome conquered Egypt they Incorporated some Egyptian gods into their pantheon and even created combined gods. It is speculated that when Mesopotamians met with the greeks, their concept of Ishtar became hellenised as Astarte, and then later became Aphrodite.
In Rome, the gods took on a completely different patronage as Emperors and Acclaimed Political persons would claim closeness through the gods by claiming they were descended from a certain god or hero. Friezes, Artwork, and Carvings were created to perpetuate this. In the time of Augustus, he was closely associated with the divine, he built many temples in his reign, dedicating many to himself and his victories or his household. He dedicated a large Apollo temple across from his family home, and within this temple there were cravings showing him with Apollo, him and his family giving libations and offerings, alongside being visited by the gods.
This gave the gods a whole new meaning, Augustus' Apollo was different to the Apollo worshipped in Gaul. People also had a concept that was different to priest(ess)s and oracles - a person could be in divine righteousness of the gods.
─ « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ─
To Summarise, there is no right or wrong way to think of the gods. I believe that if you are open to working with them, they will become open to you. Everyone's practice is so deep and individual you cant possibly put worship in a box, as the gods also cannot be enclosed. They can be many at once or one image. May they be blessed here and thereafter.
These posts will always run in the format of:
prayer
question
discussion
I am not a temple of priestess, just a devotee and trained teacher who loves to yap and learn!
See you Next Week!

Rambling about Despoina, because I have a lot of questions about her and my brain is broken.
Despoina is probably one of the most obscure Goddesses from Greek Mythology. She's considered the Goddess of Arkadian Mysteries, yet at the same time people doubt wheter or not she's a stand-alone deity or just another epithet for another goddess (usually Persephone). To make things even more complicated now, her name isn't actually one. It's an epithet, and "her true name and function were revealed only to the intitiates". "Despoina" was also an epithet used for Demeter and Persephone as well.
Now, there have been made a lot of speculations and assumptions based on the few things that we know about her. The most common theory is that Despoina was in fact the Arcadian equivalent of Persephone, and that Mycenaean Poseidon later got divided into Poseidon and Hades. On short: many people believe that back in the Mycenaean Greece there were Two Goddesses worshipped together as the Two Queens, later refferred to as the Two Mistresses: Demeter and Despoina. It is very likely that both of them are two later versions of two pre-Greek Goddesses of Arcadia. At the same time we have Mycenaean Poseidon, who was not only the god of the sea, but had strong associations with the Underworld as well. He also seemed to be in close connection with the Two Queens and form some sort of a divine trio with them, since he was refferred to as the King. Later, Despoina slowly became Persephone, whereas some of the attributes that were initially associated with Poseidon were taken away from him and used in order to create another god, Hades, because ancient people considered that it's better to have two separate deities for these two different realms. Finally, we're reaching Classic Greek Mythology, where Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus, Hades is her husband, and Poseidon is the only one of the Big Three who didn't bang her.
This theory is highly accepted because it seems the most plausible one (plus the fact that there aren't enough surviving sources from that time leaves an open door for whatever thoughts could cross people's minds), yet at the same time highly criticized for rightful reasons, such as the fact that there's a chance that Hades might've been an already existing deity in Mycenaean Mythology, but because there are no surviving written works about him from that time there's nothing certain. Another reason is because not everyone considered Despoina to be just an epithet or an older version of Persephone. And by "not everyone" I mean Pausanias:
Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 25. 5 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.) :
"When Demeter was wandering in search of her daughter [Persephone], she was followed, it is said, by Poseidon, who lusted after her. So she turned, the story runs, into a mare, and grazed with the mares of Onkios (Oncius) [in Arkadia (Arcadia)]; realising that he was outwitted, Poseidon changed into a stallion and enjoyed Demeter. At first, they say, Demeter was angry at what had happened, but later on she laid aside her wrath and wished to bathe in the Ladon . . . Demeter, they say, had by Poseidon a daughter [Despoine (Despoena)], whose name they are not wont to divulge to the uninitiated, and a horse called Areion (Arion)."
According to him Despoina and Persephone aren’t the same goddess, but two different deities. On top of that, Despoina was conceived during the time when Demeter was searching for Persephone, being youger than her, and has a horse twin brother. Which is very weird, considering the fact that Pausanias wrote this about 800 years after Homeric Hymns to Demeter, and this is the only source that states that Despoina and Persephone are two different goddesses.
Here's another fragment:
Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 37. 1 - 8. 38. 2 :
Despoine the Arkadians worship more than any other god, declaring that she is a daughter of Poseidon and Demeter. Despoine (Mistress) is her surname among the many, just as they surname Demeter's daughter by Zeus Kore (Core, the Maid). But whereas the real name of Kore (the Maid) is Persephone, as Homer and Pamphos before him say in their poems, the real name of Despoine (the Mistress) I am afraid to write to the uninitiated.
Here he states that Despoina is her surname (just how Kore is a surname for Persephone). But while we do know that Kore is Persephone, Despoina's real name still remains a secret. What is really weird here is... why would they be afraid to say her real name in the first place? We know for a matter of fact that Ancient Greeks were usually scared of saying the real names of the Underworld deities. Hades for example is always refferred to by lots of epithets and euphemisms, because people believed that by saying or writing his real name they would arouse his wrath. In this case then Despoina could be a chtonic deity as well, yet her affiliations with the Underworld are unclear, if they really exist.
But then, if Despoina would be a chtonic goddess, and she isn't Persephone, then who else could she be?
Pausanias, Description of Greece 8. 37. 1 - 8. 38. 2 :
"From Akakesion (Acacesium) [in Arkadia (Arcadia)] it is four stades to the sanctuary of Despoine (Despoena, the Mistress). First in this place is a temple of Artemis Hegemone (Leader) [probably Hekate (Hecate)], with a bronze image, holding torches, which I conjecture to be about six feet high. From this place there is an entrance into the sacred enclosure of Despoine.
[...]
Demeter carries a torch in her right hand; her other hand she has laid upon Despoine. Despoine has on her knees a staff and what is called the box, which she holds in her right hand. On both sides of the throne are images. By the side of Demeter stands Artemis [probably here identified with Hekate] wrapped in the skin of a deer, and carrying a quiver on her shoulders, while in one hand she holds a torch, in the other two serpents; by her side a bitch, of a breed suitable for hunting, is lying down.
Judging by these two experts, there is a small, vague chance that Despoina might be strongly identified with Hecate. Besides the fact that Despoina was one of Hecate's epithets as well, she was sometimes considered to be the daughter of Demeter. Hecate also plays a major role in Homeric Hymns to Demeter, and near the end of the myth she becomes Persephone's attendant and substitute queen. On top of that, Hecate shares some similarities with Poseidon, especially in Hesiod's Theogeny: ". . . and to those whose business is the in the gray discomfortable sea, and who pray to Hecate and the loud crashing Earth-Shaker, easily the glorious goddess gives great catch and easily she gives it away. . .”
Another possibility is that Despoina was supposed at one point to have a symbolic value above it all and/or to be a concept rather than a physical goddess, since "Despoina" literally means "Mistress", Persephone was refferred to as Kore ("Maiden") during her time with her mother, and while we don't know for sure what is "Demeter" supposed to mean, the "'-meter" part most probably means "mother". Which suggests that Persephone, Despoina and Demeter were probably supposed to be some sort of a Maiden/Mistress/Mother trio.

Whumptober Day 31: "I'm Alive, I'm Just Not Well"
A/N: i stayed up listening to EPIC the vengeance saga and I REGRET NOTHING
Pray
The air around the shrine is chilly, and Hamuko pulls her scarf tighter.
It’ll be the Dark Hour soon, and she… doesn’t know what to do about it.
Ikutski betrayed them, Mitsuru-senpai lost her father, and they’re no closer to figuring out how to destroy the Dark Hour and the threat of Shadows once and for all than they were when she first arrived at the dorm.
Instead of worrying about that, Hamuko does what she does best: find another problem to solve.
Shinjiro had mentioned some kids hanging around the back alleys alongside Strega, and now that Strega was gone, Hamuko could at least help them.
She’d spent the last few days asking around after school, and is fairly certain she’s tracked them down here.
Hamuko checks her phone. A few seconds to midnight.
She closes her eyes, and when she opens them the world is blanketed in green.
“Did you really come alone?”
Hamuko spins around, her hand going to her Evoker on instinct, but it’s just three kids.
The boy who spoke has brown hair, and looks to be around Ken’s age. Next to him is thinner boy with blue hair.
Finally, there’s a girl with orange hair and a laptop looking down on her from atop the jungle gym.
“Hi,” Hamuko says. “I’m–
“We know who you are.” The girl says. “Hamuko Arisato, Gekkoughan high school calls 2-F, top of your class, member of the volleyball team, the library club, student council, and of course the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.”
“How did you know that?” Hamuko asks.
“Getting your transcript was way too easy,” the girl replies.
Her transcript. The one that mentions her parents.
“Well, it’s only fair I know your names, since you know mine, right?”
The three kids share a look, then the brown haired one shrugs. “Goro Akechi.”
“I’m Yusuke Kitagawa,” the thin boy says.
“Futaba Ishikki,” the girl says.
“It’s nice to meet all of you,” Hamuko says. “I want to help you, I can take you to see Chidori.”
Kitagwa-kun steps forward, but Akechi-kun puts out a hand.
“You don’t understand what’s going on here,” Akechi-kun says. “We’re making the demands. Let Chidori go, and stop trying to destroy the Dark Hour.”
“We won’t do that,” Hamuko says. “Not while Shadows are still a threat to humanity–”
“Humans are worse than any Shadow out there,” Kitagawa-kun snaps. “Just give us back Ms. Chidori!”
Hamuko represses a groan at the thought of Takaya saying pretty much the same thing. “Ok, yes people will still die and suffer without Shadows. But it will be fewer people, because we can’t just get rid of the things that make people hurt other people.”
“Says you,” Ishikki-kun says. “The Lost aren’t hurting anyone.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“Then it seems we’re at an impasse,” Akechi-kun says. “We can't agree, so I guess we’ll have to talk to your friends and see what they think.”
“Yes!” Hamuko says. “Come back with me to the dorm, and we’ll talk to my friends!”
“You really don’t think much of us, do you?” Akechi-kun says. “Just because Takaya thinks you’re special doesn’t mean you can brush us off.”
“I really don’t care that Takaya thinks I’m special,” Hamuko says. “In fact, I kind of hate it.”
“Hey! Don’t talk about him like that! Takaya’s strong! And we’re just as strong as he is!” Hamuko just catches the glint of an Evoker as Akechi-kun pulls it out and points it to his head. “Minos!”
Hamuko dodges Akechi-kun’s Persona, and pulls out her own Evoker.
“Thanatos!” she cries out, absorbing the next Dark attack. “Kids, I really don’t want to fight you.”
“Too bad,” Akechi-kun says. He nods up at Ishikki.
“You can’t hide anything from Despoena,” the girl smirks, summoning her own Persona. It’s clear instantly that Hamuko’s being scanned.
Hamuko casts Tempest Slash towards Akechi-kun, but Kitagawa-kun gets in the way.
“Our turn!” Ishikki giggles.
“Tantalus,” Kitagawa-kun says, and suddenly there’s a chill in the night air. Then Kitagwa-kun’s Persona strikes her. It doesn’t hurt thanks to Thanatos, but suddenly Hamuko’s rocked by another kind of pain.
She’s unbearably hungry.
“Guess you really aren’t that special,” Akechi-kun says, and then his Persona changes. “Ikelos. Hamaon.”
Oh it is going to be a long night.

Oh did I never. Did I never post my ideas for Baby Strega AU personas (because like. I like making new personas)
Yusuke: Tantalus. (Constantly wanting what you cannot have ((genuine affection from Madarame)) also like. Food and passion as a motif and the way he conceptualizes desire)
Futaba: Despoena (bc like. Forbidden knowledge, also it works with her being able to stop Fuuka from scanning them bc info you're not supposed to know. Also may??? Possibly??? Be Persephone? Unclear we don't know that's why she fits the forbidden knowledge theme at all and also represents like being separated from her mom)
Goro: Minos (Judge of the dead, also asserts his strength by crushing his enemies? It makes sense in my head)
#baby Strega AU#making new persona concepts is fun unless I have to draw them#Hecate would have been my first pick for Futaba but Ann already has her and that's weird#Goro's is the one I'm least married too I wanted the goth vubes

🌾 Today’s blog is on Demeter :: Greek Goddess of Agriculture 🌾 check out my Demeter boxset in my shop @ facebook.com/thehealingcabinmichigan I’ll be doing several Goddess inspired box sets get yours today!
Demeter, the middle daughter of Cronus and Rhea, was the Ancient Greek goddess of grain and agriculture, one of the original Twelve Olympians. Her grief over her daughter Persephone – who has to spend one-third of the year with her husband Hades in the Underworld – is the reason why there is winter; her joy when she gets her back coincides with the fertile spring and summer months. Demeter and Persephone were the central figures of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the most famous secret religious festival in Ancient Greece.
Demeter’s Role
Demeter's Name
Demeter’s name consists of two parts, the second of which (-meter) is almost invariably linked with the meaning “mother,” which conveniently fits with Demeter’s role as a mother-goddess. However, there are still debates over the meaning of the first part (De-), which most scholars associate with “Ge,” i.e., Gaea (making Demeter “Mother Earth”); others, however, prefer to link it with “Deo,” which is a surviving epithet of Demeter and may have been, in an earlier form, the name of one of few grains.
Demeter's Portrayal and Symbolism
Demeter is usually portrayed as a fully-clothed and matronly-looking woman, either enthroned and regally seated or proudly standing with an extended hand. Sometimes she is depicted riding a chariot containing her daughter Persephone, who is almost always in her vicinity. The goddesses – as they were endearingly called – even share the same attributes and symbols: scepter, cornucopia, ears of corn, a sheaf of wheat, torch, and occasionally, a crown of flowers.
Demeter's Epithets
Demeter was known mostly as the Giver of Food and Grain, or “She of the Grain,” for short (Sito). However, since she presided over something as vital as the cycles of plants and seasons, the Ancient Greeks also referred to her as Tesmophoros, or “The Bringer of Laws,” and organized a women-only festival called Tesmophoria to celebrate her as such. Other epithets include: “Green,” “The Giver of Gifts,” “The Bearer of Food,” and “Great Mother.”
Who were Zeus’ Lovers?
How was the World created?
What is the Trojan Horse?
Demeter's Family
Demeter was one of the six children of Cronus and Rhea, their middle daughter, and their second child overall – born after Hestia, but before Hera and her brothers: Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. Just like all of her siblings, she was swallowed and later, following an intervention by Zeus, regurgitated by her father.
Demeter’s Consorts: Iasion, Poseidon, and Zeus
Demeter didn’t have many partners and was rarely portrayed with a male consort. The mortal Iasion and her brothers Poseidon and Zeus are the most noteworthy – if not the only – exceptions.
Demeter and Iasion
Early in her life, Demeter fell in love with a mortal named Iasion. She seduced him at the marriage of Cadmus and Harmonia and lay with him in a thrice-plowed field. Zeus didn’t think appropriate for such a respected goddess to have a relationship with a mortal, so he struck Iasion with a thunderbolt. But, by then, Demeter was already pregnant with twins: Ploutos and Philomelus, the former the god of wealth, and the latter, the patron of plowing.
Demeter and Poseidon
Next, Demeter’s brother Poseidon forced himself upon her (once transformed into a stallion), and the goddess, once again, became pregnant with two children: Despoena, a nymph, and Arion, a talking horse.
Demeter and Zeus
Finally, Demeter became Zeus’ fourth wife. From their union, Demeter’s most well-known child was born, Persephone.
Demeter and Persephone
The most important myth involving Demeter concerns her daughter Persephone’s abduction by Hades and Demeter’s subsequent wanderings.
The Abduction of Persephone
Hades, the Lord of the Underworld, fell in love with Demeter’s virgin-daughter and decided to take her into marriage. So, one day, as she was gathering flowers with her girlfriends, he lured her aside using a fragrant and inexpressibly beautiful narcissus, and then snatched her up with his chariot, suddenly darting out of a chasm under her feet.
Demeter Finds Out
Inconsolable, Demeter walked the earth far and wide for nine days to find her daughter – but to no avail. And then, on the tenth day, Hecate told her what she had seen and Helios, the All-Seeing God of the Sun, confirmed her story. Demeter wasn’t just brokenhearted anymore. She was now angry as well. And with everybody! Especially with Zeus who, the rumors claimed so, had approved the whole operation and even aided Hades throughout.
The Institution of the Eleusinian Mysteries · Iambe, Demophon, and Metanira
So, Demeter left Mount Olympus and went to grieve her daughter among the mortals, disguised as an old woman. She ended up at the court of King Celeus of Eleusis, where his wife Metanira hired her to be the nurse to her baby son, Demophon. Iambe, the old servant woman of the house, cheered her with her jokes, and Demeter laughed for the first time in many weeks. In gratitude for the kindness, Demeter devised a plan to make Demophon immortal, so she started bathing him in fire each night, thus, burning away his mortality.
However, one day, Metanira witnessed the ritual and, not realizing what was happening, started screaming in panic and alarm. This disturbed Demeter’s strategy, so she revealed herself at once and told Metanira that the only way that the Eleusinians will ever win her kindness back is by building a temple and establishing a festival in her glory.
The Return of Persephone and the Establishment of the Cycles
King Celeus did just that, and Demeter spent a whole year living in her newly built temple, grieving, and, in her grief, neglecting all her duties as a goddess of fertility and agriculture. As a consequence, the earth turned barren, and people started dying out of hunger. After unsuccessfully sending all the gods, one by one, to Demeter with gifts and pleas, Zeus realized that he would have to bring Persephone back to her mother if he didn’t want to see humanity wiped out from the planet.
So, he sent Hermes to Hades, and the divine messenger fetched back Persephone to her mother. However, the gods soon realized that Demeter’s daughter had already eaten one seed of pomegranate in the Underworld, which obliged her to remain in the Underworld. Knowing that Demeter wouldn’t allow such thing to happen, Zeus proposed a compromise: Persephone would spend one-third of the year with Hades and the other two-thirds with Demeter.
The former, the period during which Demeter is grieving, corresponds to the winter months of the year when the earth is infertile and bare; the latter, when she rejoices, overlaps with the abundant months of our springs and summers. The myth likewise explains the growth cycle of the plants. The grain, just like Persephone, must die and be buried under the earth in order to bear much fruit above it.

So completely unrelated to Poseidon?
Shame I was gonna say Despoena or something
Snapdragon Anon
Hmm. I would say while the parents are not an offspring, they certainly run in the same circles.
Also dunno this would make you feel better but when I was building yn's lore, Despoena was a very strong option and I almost went with her
(note: I double checked the family tree just in case and far as I can tell... Both of them do have some family in common with Poseidon. )
#snapdragon anon#tbh i don't want poseidon as the baby daddy bc the Percy thing.#also i think the thing with Percy would funnier if not actually related#wake me from this dreaming

A snippet from last year…
Feb. 2, 2023
Hermes finally came around. Whatever Melinoe said to him, he caved and agreed to make a deal with me.
The first night, I returned his dream nail and granted him citizenship in the Dream World. His first act was to jump from mind to mind, immediately trying to figure out the fast track to getting his full divinity back. I hadn't authorized him to do that, and I was frustrated with the level of entitlement he displayed.
He assured me that his search had paid off, however, and emptied his pockets to show me a handful of scattered runestones. "Vafthrudnir," the current leader of the stronghold Utgard, and one of the wisest Jotnar alive.
Hermes led me and a small party consisting of Njorun, Phobetor, Fortitude and Morpheus to a river where it appeared that Vafthrudnir was fishing. He wanted to go disturb the Jotun, but I suggested we stay back, have a quiet picnic, and wait for the old man to finish. I asked if Hermes had ever been fishing, and he replied that he and Apollo had gone a few times.
"And what does fishing have in common with making allies?" I asked.
He sighed. "Too much, as I recall." He took this opportunity to show me how well he could fish and wandered into the rapids to look for one.
He found a bream and tried to scoop it out of the river, but the creature grew so large he could scarcely lift it out of the water! It grew so large that, after a few moments, it turned on him and began wrestling Hermes under the water.
I reeled the two of them in, and Hermes said the most obvious thing: "That's no ordinary fish."
Of course, it was Vafthrudnir in disguise. He sat and ate with us, and advised us to acquire the sword Skofnung, as well as undergo the trials of Utgard. He said that the sword would be worth a high price... not to mention the cost of possessing it.
Hermes seemed to think it would be an easy enough feat, and asked for his sandals back in return for wrestling with a giant. Fair enough. But he found that he was unable to even approach the sword without being assaulted by the madness of the berserkers bound to the blade. I sent Njorun and Phobetor with him, but encouraged him to call on me if he needed. And he did, when he could not pull the sword out of the rock.
He was changed when he came out of Utgard on the third day. He sat staring at Skofnung and muttering the names of each of those wretched souls. When I finally grounded him and returned him to his senses, he suggested we take Skofnung to Hades to release those souls.
"They deserve rest," he said somberly. I'd never heard him use that tone before. It's as if he realized how heavy the truth is sometimes.
We took Skofnung to Hades. He was entertaining his sister-in-law, Despoena, and I fed our little party and we talked about what our plan entailed from there. Hades removed and isolated each of the 129 souls in the sword, and we talked about who would best be able to navigate the black markets.
My idea (which irritated Hades) was to ask my old friend Dara, a merchant who frequented Chthonos and was familiar with that customer base.
Once upon a time, he sneaked some of Mother's contraband into the Underworld, and it wound up causing some significant damage. My sister aspect got hold of a bracelet with a peculiar rainbow stone, and wore it to a banquet for Persephone's sending-off. That was a mistake: it amplified her empathy so much that she had a panic attack and nearly destroyed Hades' castle. Not only that, but she broke the memory spells Hypnos and Morpheus had cast on her... and that just added to the destruction.
Needless to say, Hades was not happy to see Dara again.
However, Dara was amenable to our requests, and he and Hermes are now off on a journey to find out who posted that bounty... and perhaps weasel their way in to a more vicious level of the black market.
I had hoped my day yesterday would consist of monitoring Hermes' and Dara's movements through the black market, but that was simply too much to ask for.
Once again, I had hoped to not encounter any hardship, and had simply forgotten to put X's sigil on this morning. How stupid of me... Just after noon, I felt something so panic-inducing, so cold and vicious, that I started visibly shaking. I immediately remembered to refresh the sigil, but it was too late. The damage had been done.
Fortitude could not console me. I couldn't slow my breathing or calm my racing heart. And then, for some reason, I recall Hermes rushing up to me...
As far as I'm aware, it was a spear of some kind; sharp enough that I didn't feel the effects, other than sheer panic, until early this morning.
Luckily, a portal opened to Mother's Sanctuary, and I cried out for Ekibyou. He held my hand and kept me calm and lucid until I got back to my apartment, when his influence started to finally make me sleepy. Fortitude lay with me a little while and helped me calm down using EMDR techniques, until I finally drifted off.
Ekibyou must have realized he couldn't do what I needed on his own, so he brought me to a familiar place; the home of Liraz, the Hierophant of the Ages. Liraz, in turn, sedated me and held me still while he summoned two more guides. I became lucid somewhere near the end of the procedure, and saw who he had called; a beautiful black woman with glowing blue cracks across her face, and an old man with a long white beard and long hair in a ponytail, wearing monks' robes.
I quickly learned what they were collectively doing. Ekibyou was siphoning the anxiety out of me as if it were a poison. Liraz was keeping me sedated. The fractured lady had split my mind into manageable pieces, like stained glass, almost, so that the old man could help me separate out the aspect that seemingly kept responding to this fear.
He was inside my mind, and I remember he was fighting me... using blows as often as pressure points, trying to get her to disconnect. I crashed into the wall, but pushed myself up, turned around and said, "Again." And he began beating at me again, though I could not feel any pain from the blows.
I woke up feeling sick to my stomach, as if he had ripped a piece out of me. I suppose he had, after a fashion.
Liraz took me into his house and told me not to move for awhile. He said I had four broken ribs... and had lost one of my wings. Not a huge deal, since I can get it back, but I'm still tired and in some pain. I asked him who the old man was, and he told me it was Himavan, the father of Parvati; my father.
He came by for a little while, early in the morning, and held my hand. I called him "Baba," and he said I was brave... that I'd always been brave. He petted my head and told me he was proud of me. I told him that meeting people like him from my former lives felt like all my broken pieces were coming together.
He chuckled and said, "That's the point."
