hi!!!! it’s been a while. idk how many ppl have rly been following my updates n stuff (not that there have been too many anyways LMAO) but things have been A Lot 4 me lately (as is the case 4 everyone these days obviously) so i haven’t been sharing my progress on madeira At All Whatsoever. but im gonna try to recap as much as i can in this post since i last shared (day 3 i think? wild) cuz i rly wanna make an effort to document this!!
this is what my map looks like as of today! here’s what’s what and who’s who:
islanders: charlise and antonio (starters); norma, rex, and winnie (housing plot challenge but i met norma on a mystery tour); raymond (campsite); freya and zucker (met on mystery tours); and mathilda and hopper (moved in naturally)! rizzo also showed up at my campsite one time but I uh. didn’t l*ke him so i left him there and didn’t invite him to my island JDHSKDHSKHDD 😔 it was cruel of me but i don’t regret it
amenities: museum, nook’s cranny, able sisters, campsite, airport, and upgraded residential services! also two bridges!
i don’t remember if i ever posted a screenshot of my map from my first few days of playing but if i did u might notice that charlise and i both moved our houses! hers was blocking the way of a horizontal bridge so i shifted her a bit to the right so she wouldn’t be as close to the river anymore. i moved my own house to make room for more islander housing plots and i decided to go on a cliff where i could be near the ocean! i love it a lot but it’s kinda tedious to use a ladder every time i wanna go up or down JDHSKDJDJ but im gonna invest in an incline soon i think
here r some pics of my house! it’s a huge wip cuz i haven’t been good abt grinding for bells 😔 but it’s coming along i guess
the left hand pic is what it looks like from the outside! initially my roof was green but i switched it to red to match the door better. idk how to change the exterior of my house like i think i have to unlock it somehow? but this is kinda ugly so i hope i can do it soon
the middle pic is my living room! the art hanging on the walls is a thing from work that means a lot to me 🥺 and the right pic is my bedroom! i wanna put some art on the walls here too — school spirit stuff cuz im a nerd and a dumbass hehe. wish i had more / better furniture but i rly like the size and feel of each of these rooms
i kinda hate that i had no choice but to put a room in the back, if it were up to me i wouldve donenit on the side or smth cuz i hate back rooms tbh. when i get more rooms im probably gonna move my room to a side one and use this room for smth else but i haven’t figured it out yet
im Terrible @ interior design in animal crossing like i just keep putting everything along the walls and saying fuck it 😔 so hopefully i get better furniture and stuff soon cuz she is looking ROUGH!
some ideas for other rooms: art studio / gallery upstairs; a music room and a kitchen or bathroom along with my bedroom on the main floor; a space-themed room or like an indoor garden or smth in the basement! :”~)
and now for some other updates:
i bought nintendo switch online and ive done some island hopping w a few irl pals! i have soooo many ppl (irl and online) i wanna play w omg im just scared 2 ask 🤡
special chars ive encountered: cj, flick, sahara, gulliver (i would die for him), wisp, daisy mae, celeste, and queen ISABELLE! also zipper but he doesn’t rly count lol. speaking of which i am SO tired of eggs it’s tew much!
im now in the tarantula business babey!!!!!!!!!!!!
Norma got sick one day and the next day I found a face mask in able sisters JDJFKSHFKJ
Raymond tried to move out on me and i REFUSED! to let him out of my sight. he’s stuck w me forever... i love him (but like. in a chill way. not like some of what ive been hearing abt cuzzzz... 😬)
project k is um. Slow. cuz im also trying to figure out my house and also my life has been in some Shambles Lately Lemme Tell You. but im working on it lol.. right now im @ a 2 star rating and im despondent like i have no room to put more outdoor furniture, i like having weeds cuz i think they look pretty and natural, i hate fences, and planting flowers takes too much effort so like. guess kk will never come cuz im stubborn and also an idiot 😌
FINALLY! LAST BUT NOT LEAST! here’s a video of isabelle singing my town tune (which is the same as it is in new leaf: my favorite part of the london cast recording of “practically perfect” from the mary poppins musical. i am fucking crazy but im free). anyways let me tell u seeing her sing this STRAIGHT UP brought me to tears cuz i was so Delighted and Charmed so i hope it makes u delighted and charmed too (but maybe not tearful abt it unless u want to be!) :”~) until next time!
#nh#animalese#acnh#animal crossing new horizons#animal crossing#acnhdiarychallenge#also tmrrw im gonna try to post some of the screenshots ive been holding on to so brace urself for that!#new horizons

Chapter 21 - Teeth and Claws
“Oh. My. Gods!” Ruby gasped. “Seriously? That’s your—”
“Not another word.” Belle hissed in warning, still scarlet from the transgression of her roving eyes, and trying to distract herself in concentration on what Jefferson had said about her not attending the ball, like some sad approximation of Cinderella, that and to ignore the general fuss that Gold’s appearance had engendered.
Once the general caterwauling had died down, Jefferson folded his arms across his chest and asked, “You do know that this is a ball, and not a funeral, right Gold?”
“Your point?” Gold asked dryly.
“My point, my good man,” Jefferson said with the gesture of a hand up and down Gold’s black clad form. “Is that you look like some kind of nightmare executioner or something.”
“And how do you know that’s not the look I’m going for?” Gold snarked, adding even more sarcastically, “Besides, we can’t all play the part of the colorblind fop, now can we?”
Jefferson’s expression turned to one of mock offense. “I’m deeply wounded,” he said, and out of the corner of her eyes, Belle saw that Ruby was fighting to keep a straight face.
“I dunno,” David piped up, “I think it kinda suits him.”
Jefferson made a sour face, and then switching subjects again slightly, said, “I’m also surprised - nay, alarmed, if I may say, Gold, that you haven’t already invited these lovely ladies.” He gestured with his hat toward where Belle and Ruby stood watching the exchange of friends.
When she realized what the man meant, Belle actually took a step back, as all four of the men turned to look at her and Ruby.
“Oh, no, it’s fine, really,” she stammered, “We don’t—”
“Actually,” Gold said with a frown, “I, myself, am somewhat surprised that you aren’t going, Miss Marchland.” He came around the car so that when he spoke with her they wouldn’t be talking over so great a distance. “One of the reasons that the library was closed down the last time was that the previous librarian ignored such… invitations.”
“Invitations?” Belle echoed.
“Yes,” he said, his frown deepening. “The mayor’s office mails them out to all local business owners, and while the library is not technically a business, I rather think that Regina will expect you there.”
“I didn’t receive an invitation,” Belle said quietly.
“I’m surprised,” Gold answered.
“I’m not,” Belle said flatly, remembering all the other times that Mayor Mills had ‘neglected’ to mention certain important things - things that she should have been told.
“You should join us,” Gold said.
“Finally,” Jefferson exclaimed with a huff, “the man does the right thing!”
Gold threw a sour look his way. “Please,” he said, “I’d be delighted.”
Belle was about to stammer an apology, turn down the invitation and take her chances with Regina Mills when Ruby suddenly stabbed her with her elbow.
“We’d love to,” Ruby said. “Just give us a moment to go and get changed.”
“We’ll be here,” David assured her.
Ruby grabbed her by the elbow and began leading her away from the men and back toward the library. As soon as they were out of earshot, Belle hissed, “What the hell are we supposed to wear? I bet they’ve had weeks to get their outfits together.”
“Don’t be such a killjoy, Belle,” Ruby snapped, “I know for a fact you packed those outfits you used to wear for kids story time back at the library in Boston. One of those should do to look a bit… Olde Timey.”
Belle grumbled softly. She hadn’t thought of that, and doubted that she’d still get into any of them it had been such a long time since she’d worn them, but alas, Ruby was right, and she had no excuse - not really.
“You’re welcome, by the way,” Ruby added with no little amount of sarcasm. “And could he have got those pants any tighter?”
“Ruby!” Belle squeaked, all but running for her bedroom closet to hide the neon red of her cheeks. Ruby’s soft laughter followed her until it disappeared into the bathroom.
As it turned out, one of the outfits Ruby mentioned still did fit her. It was a three quarter length dress in a dusky blue, which had a skirt with a slight bustle beneath the hips, and so it hung in soft pleats to her mid calf. The top of the dress was in the style of a cap-sleeved white blouse with slight puffs at the shoulder, and lace trim around the sleeve and at the top the dress was designed to be worn with the form fitting, corset like bodice, trimmed in a tan brown, and with black crossed laces at the front. A light touch of make up later, though with bright red lipstick, and her hair swept to the side, and she was ready to brave the ball.
When Ruby emerged from the bedroom Belle gasped to find her dressed in tight fitting suede leggings, into which she had tucked a vest style top, over which, she wore the long, red, cloak-style coat she’d bought in Boston when they last went shopping together.
“Wow,” she said.
“I’ll do then?” Ruby said with a chuckle. “Come on, lets not keep them waiting.”
It was a bit of a squeeze, getting the six of them into Jefferson’s car, but by virtue of Belle squeezing into the middle seat between Gold and David, and Gus practically in David’s lap, they all managed. Ruby rode shotgun, having the longest legs of all of them. Belle tried not to think too hard about the man pressed on her right hand side, or the way his hands lay, long and languid against his leather clad thighs. No, definitely not letting her thoughts drift in such a way. There was little conversation on the short drive to the fellowship hall up on the convent grounds, where the Ball was being held, but as they turned into the driveway, Belle swiveled her head first one way and then the other, taking in the array of revelers - if they could be called such - all dressed in myriad ways, heading for the large brick built hall.
They followed, each going their separate ways, almost without a word to one another once they had reached their destination, although Gus, it seemed, was quite taken with Ruby, and walked her into the hall on his arm, and promised to find her later when the dancing began.
“See,” Ruby said, catching up to where Belle was looking around the hall to try and get her bearings. “Not so bad, was it.” Then following Belle’s lead appeared to be looking around the hall herself until she said to Belle, “I hope you’re going to introduce me to some of your friends later… and seriously, you should go and find your Mister Gold for a dance.”
“Would you stop?” Belle protested, half laughing and half filled with embarrassment. “He’s not my Mister Gold.”
She spotted Leroy, up on stage with the band and waved when he looked her way. He gave her a thumbs up and a grin before turning back to the task of making sure that everything was set for when the promised dancing began - whenever that might be. She began to wonder how they might manage the dancing as there seemed to be far more men at the occasion than women, and few enough that she could name.
“Belle,” she turned as a familiar voice called her name and a moment later found herself looking up into the smiling face of Doctor Archie Hopper. He seemed to have opted not to indulge in wearing a costume, and remained in his usual tweed jacket, shirt and pants. “You made it.”
“I did,” she said. “Thanks to Jefferson and his friends arriving to collect Mister Gold.” Then remembering herself at a nudge from Ruby, she added, “This is my friend, Ruby. Ruby, Doctor Hopper.”
“Archie, please,” he said. “And you’re visiting from…?”
“Boston,” Ruby said. “We used to be room mates, before she moved up here.”
“Ah,” Archie said sagely, “Well, your loss is our gain, as they say.”
“Yeah,” Ruby said.
Archie excused himself after a moment, disappearing into the rapidly increasing throng of people. Belle tried to spot anyone else she knew, to introduce to Ruby, but the fact of it was that besides Leroy and Archie, and of course Granny, who was far too busy running back and forth with catering items for Belle to disturb her, Belle knew very few people.
“Well, well, Miss Marchland.” The voice was sickeningly oily, and yet held an edge. “I see you found your way to my little soiree. I’m so glad you received the invitation.”
With a river of ice flowing down her backbone, Belle turned, but somehow found strength in her friend’s presence she said, “Mayor Mills. I didn’t.”
“No?” Regina frowned an exaggerated frown that made Belle certain that she had been left off the guest list on purpose. “An oversight, I’m sure.”
She nodded, sending the great plume of black feathers that cradled the back of her neck quivering, for the first time drawing Belle’s attention away from her face. The mayor was wearing a red and black floral dress, with silver lace embroidery all around the neckline and decolletage and descended to well below her waist, like an arrow pointing to where Belle was sure the woman must have teeth. The shoulders were wide, the waist narrow, and the full bustle accentuated her hips. Around her neck, in the same style and silver as the embroidery on the dress she wore a pendant, which held many tiny rubies. The pendant’s triangular shape was nestled in the top of her cleavage, which was pushed up by the tight bodice of the dress to reveal the creamy white curves of full breasts.
There was nothing subtle about Regina Mills.
“Well, anyway,” Belle tore her eyes away, and smiled as the band began to tune their instruments, “I’m here now. I’m sure there won’t be any more mishaps. People might begin to think it by design rather than accident.”
The viper smile disappeared from Mayor Mills’ dark red lips, and her face creased into an ugly line, “Are you threatening me, Miss Marchland.”
“Me?” she said with all the innocence she could muster. “I wouldn’t dream of it, Miss Mills.” Then lowering her voice to a more confidential tone, added, “I’m sure we both have far more important things to do, and it would seem that duty calls.”
She nodded toward the stage, where Leroy appeared to be trying to attract the mayor’s attention.
“Indeed it does,” Mayor Mills said, in a brittle ‘this isn’t over’ kind of tone, and the deadly smile reappeared on her face. “This has been an interesting conversation, Miss Marchland, and how fitting that you’re dressed as a serving maid. Enjoy your evening.”
She walked away then, hips swaying as though she were trying to hypnotize every man in the room. Ruby stepped back up beside Belle, and handed her a chilled glass of white wine.
“Thanks for the back up,” Belle said sarcastically.
“Nah,” Ruby told her, “You didn’t need it, but I can’t help but wonder what’s got her panties all in a bunch,” and after a beat, and a sip of wine, she added, “Bitch!”

Who is the most popular actress in America? A. It is entirely a matter of opinion. — Q. When will Maude Adams play in New York again? A. She plays at the Empire in September. She will visit Mr. and Mrs. James Barrie in England this summer.
Page 200: Some of the Scenes in “Peter Pan,” the New Play by James M. Barrie in which Maude Adams will be seen next season.
Maude Adams will be seen this coming season in a new play by James M. Barrie, called “Peter Pan,” or “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.” This piece was first produced at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, on December 27, 1904, and had a most successful run. The popular author of “The Little Minister” designed it as a Christmas entertainment, and in addition to amusing children by introducing all kinds of whimsical incidents the author had a serious object in view. He has tried, with the usual delightful Barrie touch, to uphold the principle of “loving respect for ladies,” and inculcate a high ideal of one’s coming mother, who, in the course of a long definition, is described as “one who does a child’s work when it is tired and sings it to sleep.” Mr. Barrie has also endeavored to revive the love of children for fairies, who are referred to in an exquisitely written passage as being created by the first laughter of babies.
The play contains among other features, a burlesque of the sanguinary deeds of the old time pirates, sailing beneath skull and cross bones. There are buccaneers and redskins, all painted with vivid colors, and though the case of steel, says an English critic, there plays a lambent humor, more subdued in tone than the flickering light resembling that of a Will o’ the Wisp, which indicates the presence of Peter Pan’s watchful but jealous Fairy attendant, Tinker Bell.
Peter Pan was a child who left his home the day after he was born on hearing his parents form plans as to his future. Wishing never to grow up, or to be anything more than a child, Peter has taken refuge with the fairies, although one attempt to return had led to his finding the window shut and another child in his place. So, refusing any longer to trouble about a Mother’s Love, Peter, attired in a primitive dress of furs, spends his time obtaining recruits for his band, composed of lost children, whose dwelling place is the Never-Never-Never Land, with Indians and buccaneers for neighbors. On several of his expeditions Peter has reached the Darling house, to the alarm of Mrs. Darling and to the loudly expressed indignation of the children’s faithful nurse, Nana, who is no ordinary nurse, but a large Newfoundland. This remarkable animal carries the three Darling children to the bathroom, whether they wish it or not, gives them medicine, turns on the electric light and generally behaves like the average Jane or Susan. For her persistent barking as a sign that danger is near, poor Nana is dragged off by her master from her kennel in the children’s bedroom and is chained up in disgrace in the yard, the consequence being that the children have no one to protect them when Peter Pan pays a visit. A friendship is struck up between them, and Peter Pan gives the Darling children lessons in dying, which enables them to come to the Never-Never-Never Land.
Page 201: There, Peter’s band, comprising Tootles, Nibs, Slightly, Curly and the Twins, are shown as issuing from the hollows in the trunks of trees, which conduct them to a comfortable underground dwelling. One of the children shoots the Flying Wendy by mistake, thinking her to be a Great White Bird, and the girl is appointed “collective” Mother of them all, Peter also assuming the position of Father. Peter, however, also wishes to regard Wendy as Mother rather than as “titular” wife. His paternal responsibilities oppress him with a sense of growing years and he is also puzzled by the desire of an Indian amazon to become his squaw. A coalition is formed between the band of Indians against the pirates, whose leader is Peter’s particular foe. The Indians, keeping watch over the subterraneous dwelling, are attacked in the hight by the pirates, who take captive all the members of the band except Peter. Then follows a finely presented ship scene in which the lads are all but made to walk the plank, ending in the defeat of the pirates who are all thrown overboard. Then Peter is left behind in fairyland and a following scene shows the return of the children to their disconsolate parents to the great joy of the mother — particularly of the father, who had taken to sleeping at nights in the kennel by way of penance, and to the high delight of the once more happy Nana, who is said to be the most lovable character in a play rather heterogeneous and unevenly balanced. “Peter Pan” was a great success during its run in London, where it was beautifully staged with splendid scenery, and the effect of the piece was greatly aided by various well performed dances by music which is by turns plaintive, barbaric and nautical.
The stage sets are as follows: Act one — Our Early Days. Scene one, Outside the House; scene two, Inside the House. Act two — The Never-Never-Neer Land. Scene one, The House We Built for Wendy; scene two, The Redskins’ Camp; scene three, Our Home Under the Ground. Act three — We Return to Our Distracted Mothers. Scene one, The Pirate Ship; scene two, A Last Glimpse of the Redskins; scene three, Home.
Page 212: An Admirer of Maude Adams. — Q. Will Maude Adams play “Peter Pan” and “Alice, Sit-by-the-Fire” next season? A. She will commence next season at the Empire Theatre, this city, in “Peter Pan”; Ethel Barrymore plays “Alice, Sit-by-the-Fire.”
Page 212: If we may judge from the announcements made by the managers the new theatrical season now fairly begun will not be lacking in abundant material. Including Arthur Wing Pinero, all the leading English and American dramatists are well represented, and some of the pieces to be done here, such as Barrie’s fairy play, “Peter Pan,” Alfred Sutro’s “Walls of Jericho,” and André Messager’s “Véronique,” have enjoyed successful runs abroad. “The Pearl and the Pumpkin,” a musical piece by Paul West and John W. Bretton, presented by Klaw & Erlanger at the Broadway, was the first offering of the season in New York, and this was quickly followed at Wallack’s by “Easy Dawson,” the new piece written or Raymond Hitchcock by Edward E. Kidder. …… Maude Adams, as already announced, will be seen this season as the heroine in James M. Barrie’s whimsical play, “Peter Pan.” Blanche Walsh will continue presenting Fitch’s play “The Woman in the Case,” and William Gillette will be seen in his own play, called “Clarice,” the title role being taken by Marie Doro, Edward H. Southern and Julia Marlowe will continue their theatrical partnership, making at least three new Shakepearian revivals, including “The Taming of the Shrew,” “The Merchant of Venice” and “Twelfth Night.“ W.H. Crane has a new play by George H. Broadhurst and C.T. Davey, entitled “An American Lord,” and will be seen here in it some time in January.

Page 285: Baltimore, Nov. 9. — From a theatrical standpoint, Baltimore has fared very well so far, the second month of the season being rich in good attractions. At the Academy, Viola Allen in “The Toast of the Town” was followed by Maude Adams in the new Barrie play, “Peter Pan.” Both of these actresses are favorite here and were welcomed by large and fashionable audiences. Another engagement of note was that of Henrietta Croeman in “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” which did very well at Ford’s. …. …… Buffalo, N.Y., Nov. 11. — The all-star cast in “The Heart of Maryland” opened the Lyceum Theatre this week under the Shubert-Belasco-Fiske combination. Buffalonians are delighted with the prospects of seeing Mrs. Fiske in “Leah Kleschna,” as we have been deprived of this pleasure on account of having no place for her to appear. We are also to have Sarah Bernhardt, Mrs. Leslie Carter, Miss Alice Nielsen, DeWolf Hopper, and many others whom we could not have seen had not this theatre been opened as an independent house. We have seen Maude Adams in “Peter Pan,” Thomas Jefferson in “Rip Van Winkle,” Alice Fischer in “School for Husbands,” and next week comes Blanche Walsh in “The Woman in the Case.” After hovering around Buffalo for two years, the “Babes in Toyland” landed this week. While not the original cast, the company was satisfactory.
Page 290: EMPIRE. “Peter Pan.” Play in 3 as by James M. Barrie. Produced Nov. 6 with this cast: Peter Pan, Maude Adams; Mr. Darling, Ernest Lawford; Mrs. Darling, Grace Henderson; Wendy, Mildred Norris; John, Walter Robinson; Michael, Martha McGraw; Nana, Charles H. Weston; Tinker Bell, Jane Wren; James Hook, Ernest Lawford; Smee, Thomas McGrath; Starkey, Wallace Jackson; Great Big Little Panther, Lloyd Carleton; Tiger Lily, Margaret Gordon; Lisa, Anna Wheaton.
“Peter Pan” is a delightful play — for the elect! This may mean you and it may not. “Every time a baby laughs a fairy is born.” If you agree with this you will find much to enjoy in Mr. Barrie’s charming idyll of child life. If, on the contrary, it conveys to you no meaning, you had better avoid the Empire Theatre and go instead to see — the Rogers Brothers.
“Peter Pan” is an epic of childish joy and fancy; it is the apotheosis of youth and all its high-colored fictions, and Barrie is probably the only writer in English letters today capable of giving this whimsical conception dramatic form. Everything that surges, unreasoning, though the childish brain, all the extravaganzas, unrealities, terrifying dangers, delights, enthusiasms — all these infantile emotions are woven by the dramatist into a spectacular entertainment that is full of exquisite tenderness, sentiment and poetry, and in the lovable, elfish Peter Pan, the boy who did not want to grow up and ran away from home rather than become President, the English poet has given Maude Adams a part that suits her better than anything she has done since Lady Babbie.
No man who does not love children could have written this play, which is redolent of the nursery, and which has the miraculous effect of rejuvenating all who witness it. some of our superannuated, dyspeptic critics profess they are unable to comprehend this exquisite fantasy. Pity them! They could never have been young themselves. They were born old with all their teeth cut.
Mothers will like “Peter Pan” because it symbolizes Mother Love. The only regret that Peter feels when he runs away from home is because he leaves his dear mother behind, and when he induces the Darling children to fly away with him to the Never-Never-Never Land, he insists that Wendy, the eldest girl, shall act as Little Mother to them all.
A detailed account of the plot of this unique piece appeared in a recent issue of this magazine. It has had a long run in London, and this success should be repeated here if American theatre-goers care for dainty dramatic fare of this sort. Judging by the rapt attention with which the play was followed on the opening night, New York audiences, sophisticated as they may be, still have a corner in their hearts for the time when the sun was always smiling and the birds were always singing, and when the life of Tinker Bell — the invisible fairy whose presence throughout the play is indicated only by a dancing light — is in peril, and Peter Pan in keen distress comes down to the footlights and explains that Tinker Bell must die unless they (the audience) believe in fairies, the whole house responded to the appeal with “We do! We do!” expressed in applause. And so Tinker Bell’s life is saved!
The coming of Peter Pan to the Darling’s nursery after the children have been put to bed by the faithful St. Bernard dog Nana, who officiates as nurse, the lessons in flying and subsequent flight of the children thought he window to the Never-Never-Never Land; the arrival in the Magic Country, infested with strange animals — the Monster Ostrich, the Man-Eating Crocodile, with a cock ticking in its stomach, and the Fierce Wolves, driven away by the children looking Through Their Legs — the building of the House in the Woods with a Silk Hat for a chimney and a Lady’s Slipper for a door-knocker, the attack by the Savage Redskins and by the Bloodthirsty Pirates, the retreat to the Underground Cavern, the Capture of the Children, who are taken Prisoners to the Pirate Ship and sentenced to Walk the Plank; the Rescue by Peter Pan, the worsting of the pirates and the return of the Darling Children to their Anxious Mother — these are the …..
Page xxii: Washington, D.C., Nov. 9. — The acquisition of the Lafayette Opera House by the Belasco and Shubert forces has revolutionized theatrical conditions here. We are to have one new theater this month to play the popular-priced combinations formerly seen at the Lafayette, and the impetus given to theatrical affairs has caused negotiations to be opened which may lead to the construction of two more playhouses by next season. The Belasco opened Oct. 23 to a fashionable audience with Blanche Bates in “A Girl of the Golden West,” followed in weekly successsion by “Mrs. Temple’s Telegram,” “Darling of the Gods,” “Loveland,” and “Heart of Maryland.” Business has been uniformly large. “Peter Pan,” with Maude Adams, was presented at the National on Ct. 17. The audience heartily approved the piece. On the ensuing week, Herviern’s powerful drama, “The Labyrinth,” was seen for the first time in America, with Olga Nethersole as the star.

Eco House Western Australia
Homes
Anna Flanders
Inside the WA home of Tanya McKenna, Peter Chadwick and Henri the boxer. The forest green bottle grinders by Menu were gifted to Tanya by her best friends; the vintage amber wine glasses were found at the local tip; the original 1970’s teapot was gifted to Tanya by Peter in Copenhagen; and the handmade hanging plywood light was by Peter. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The height of the interior coupled with the soaring window ‘mosaic’ give the home it’s airy, relaxed feel. The forest-green door was purchased privately by Tanya and Peter from a demolition sale (and is said to be from a mansion once owned by Alan Bond). They painted it Forest Green to match their living room wall. The woven baskets were gifted to Tanya by Carla; the white metal coat hanger was sourced from France on Ebay; the staghorn plant was gifted to Tanya by her parents and reinforced to eco-ply sheeting by Peter. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
‘This is our urban retreat away from the hustle and bustle of life, but still close to everything we love and need. We’re always on the go with busy lives, but we’re always relaxed at home. We love to cook, put on a record and just relax, or host long-table dinners in the courtyard. It’s nice having a smaller space that doesn’t require as much maintenance, too,’ says Tanya. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The kitchen is made from custom pre-finished plywood cabinetry designed by Carla at Etica Studio and made locally by Raw Edge Furniture. Tanya and Peter sourced the Oregon benchtops from a salvage yard. Fridge and appliances are by Smeg and Miele. The oregon staircase and custom metalwork balustrade are by Customised Metal Works , while the light was designed and handmade by Tanya and Peter. Original Danish wall sconces and rattan stools were sourced privately by Tanya, and white tapware is by Astra Walker. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
Carla designed the pantry and Raw Edge Furniture crafted it. Tanya and Peter had it painted Forest Green to bookend each side of the open-plan living area. The Smeg fridge is a smart inclusion in this area, topped with greenery from Tanya’s nan and overlooked by original 60s Danish sconce lights purchased privately off Ebay and rewired by Peter (an electrician by trade). Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
Tanya and Peter sourced the amber glass and vintage windows to create this soaring mosaic of windows. It beautifully works with the recycled rammed concrete (made using crushed concrete rubble from building sites and demolitions) to give a soulful, yet contemporary, backdrop. On the table is a retro vase was gifted to Tanya by her best friend. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
This area is one of the most beautiful areas in the home, where light floods into the space and hits the clean surfaces to add a wonderful warmth. Tanya and Peter bought the original 1960s table from Roofpocket; the pendant light was made by Kira and Kira; and the chairs were sourced privately by Tanya and Peter. Henri also gets to eat in this area, where you can see his dog bowl by Mog & Bone. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The Forest Green walls and white resin flooring bring out the aged, but beautiful, warm timbers in the furniture. ‘It’s a very calming space with lots of warmth. It has soul. The pop of greenery in every room contributes to the soothing atmosphere,’ says Tanya. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
Original 1960s bricks were sourced from a demolition site, then painted white. A concrete plinth has been incorporated into the wall to soften the architecture with displays. The print of Monstera delisiosa is by (By) Garmi from Norsu Interiors and the real interior greenery is by Tanya. The wood fire is by Nectre from Subiaco Restoration. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The main living area is filled with natural materials and a wonderful collection of pieces that have been sourced, handed down and found… the natural jute rug is from IKEA , the original mid-century Danish armchairs from INTOO Collectibles , the 1960s nesting tables were made by Tanya’s late-grandfather and gifted to the couple by their Nana, and the wire chair, vintage speakers and Danish sideboard were all sourced privately. The original Danish retro leather sofa was bought from the now-closed Revival Hill store in Perth. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
Natural light and cross ventilation were designed into the southern side of the home through a custom-made timber hopper window. Peter built the pine shelf above that provides a subtle break into the white-painted brick wall. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The kitchen benchtop was made from locally sourced recycled oregon, which was originally from a pub in Northam, WA. It was carefully repurposed by Raw Edge Furniture into a benchtop. The stairway and grid mesh balustrade was designed by Carla and made by local tradesmen. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The study space sits above the kitchen and dining areas on the home’s mezzanine and is filled with natural light through the home’s two-storey window ‘mosaic’. It’s screened with 1960’s breezeblocks and is incorporated into a long stretch of cabinetry, which was made by local makers Raw Edge Furniture. The lamp is from Angove Street Collective and the vintage rattan stool was purchased privately. On the floor are salvaged Baltic pine floorboards from the original Melbourne Town Hall. Tanya and Peter found them on Gumtree and carefully restored them with local woodworkers. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
Peter handmade the plywood bed to perfectly fit the bedroom space. The vintage amber lights were sourced privately by Tanya and Carla and fitted by Peter. Timber windows were custom made by Furntech Joinery and the bed features the couple’s preferred organic cotton linen bedding from IN BED Store. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
There are two guest rooms in the home and each have the same retro vibe. This one features an original 1970’s double bed sourced privately off Gumtree by Tanya and Peter. They prefer to use organic cotton linen bedding by IN BED Store and have mixed it on this bed with velvet olive green pillow cases by Kip & Co from Remedy in Leederville. The poster is from a bar in Copenhagen and the travel books are a collection of Tanya and Peters. The woven baskets were gifted to Tanya by Carla. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
This is one of Tanya and Peter’s favourite views in the home – looking out through a window to a section of their green roof featuring philodendrons and mother-in-laws tongue. ‘Having greenery permanently in our bedroom is beautiful and calming — it’s a huge credit to Carla,’ says Tanya. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The bathroom is a lesson in simplicity… Cabinetry is by Raw Edge Furniture and tapware by Astra Walker. The mirror cabinetry was fitted by Peter. The couple prefer to use locally made vegan body products by Clean Slate . Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
This was a lucky find! Tanya managed to source a 1970s forest-green bathtub with matching basin from Adelaide for the ensuite. The tapware is Astra Walker and greenery by Tanya. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The northfacing courtyard utilises 1960s breezeblocks and white-painted recycled bricks. The table was made by Peter out of recycled oregon timber to match the interior benchtops and the vintage chairs were purchased secondhand from a salvage yard and repurposed with plywood seats by Peter. The outdoor lighting was also purchased second-hand. The permeable paving and courtyard design are by Tanya and Peter. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
The rear-lane access features a Forest Green roller door in keeping with the theme of the home. You can just spy the green roof, which was installed on two levels of the roof by Deep Green Landscaping with cladding by Scyon , timber window frames by Furntech Joinery. The permeable paving was sourced and installed by Peter and Tanya and the concrete planter made by Peter from left-over concrete in a previous renovation. Greenery by Tanya. Photography – Dion Robeson, styling – Anna Flanders.
Tanya McKenna and Peter Chadwick are self-confessed ‘passionate renovators’. She’s a sustainability consultant, and he’s a trades manager for a Perth renovation company. Together they are a savvy sustainable-design force… especially teamed with Tanya’s equally as eco-focused architect sister Carla Karsakis of Etica Studio.
It was 2014 when Tanya found the 200sqm urban infill block their home sits on today. At the time, she and Peter were half-way through a two-year renovation of a 1920s cottage, and had just returned from a two-month holiday in Uruguay and Brazil. It was also at this time that Carla launched her architectural studio, so the timing seemed right for a new project.
‘We worked really closely with Carla to maximize the small space into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a huge open-plan living space, dream kitchen and leafy courtyard,’ explains Tanya. ‘We are really close as sisters and we worked well together, bouncing ideas off one another.’
The result is a two storey (or one level with mezzanine) home the couple refer to as ‘The Nature-Inspired Eco House’. They live here with their nine-month-old boxer Henri, a family of indoor plants and the occasional Airbnb guest. This home, however, is as much a place to live, as is it a physical manifestation of the couple’s life philosophy.
‘How we live is not only important for us as human beings, but also for the world,’ says Tanya. ‘If we design living spaces with a lesser environmental footprint – with the earth and our comfort in mind – we’re not only creating beautiful healthy spaces, but we’re doing our bit for the climate. For us, our home demonstrates what is possible.’
Concrete (crushed and repurposed rubble), brick (1960s breeze blocks and reclaimed bricks), timber (revamped Baltic floorboards from the original Melbourne Town Hall fit-out and 1960s windows, doors and skirting boards) and low-VOC paints in Forest Green and white on the walls, with a white resin on the floors, set the palette of the home.
One element that is not seen, but incredibly important is a green roof by Deep Green Landscaping. Solar panels, a solar hot-water system (both by Infinite Energy) and greenery are packed above the house, which is fitting given Tanya is an advocate for the 202020 Vision – a national campaign to increase urban green space by 20 per cent by 2020.
‘As the global population grows and more people live in urban areas, there will be a greater need for the green roof as a heat sink in a warming climate, pollution reduction method, purifier of air and filter system for stormwater runoff, and a space for flora and fauna to increase urban biodiversity,” Tanya explains. The roof is accessed via a Danish-designed Velux skylight thanks to her parents’ company and she hopes it stands as an example of how residential homes can incorporate such a feature.
When it came to the home’s look and feel, the couple wanted to mix the brutalist aesthetic they had seen on holiday in South America, with the ‘hyggelig’ interiors they had experienced on a six-month visit to Denmark in 2011.
With the reclaimed materials and architectural design taking care of the Brutalist aspect, it was the ‘hygge’ they had to bring in, through furniture and accessories. Pieces throughout the home are a mix of custom designs; family objects, such as the nest of coffee tables made by Tanya’s grandfather and gifted to them by her nan; buys from mid-century stores in Perth; Gumtree finds; and other pieces the couple have sourced over time.
The soaring windows, which are a mosaic of reclaimed 60s clear and amber panes, and an oversized set of French doors, flood the largely white space with natural northern light, creating more of that warmth they were after. The light flows into the bottom and top floors, heating them up in winter and providing views over the neighboring roofs and treetops.
The couple say the home is relaxing in the morning, bright and airy through the day and calming in the evenings. They point to the natural light, fresh air and living greenery throughout the home as the element behind that. Of course, it’s also to do with the soulful materials palette, collections of furniture and objects and the passion and consideration that have gone into the design and build of this project.
‘Our home represents everything about us. There’s something to be said about living in a space that you worked so hard to create – every single thing was thought out. Together with the inner-city location and beautiful outlook, we couldn’t really ask for anything more,’ says Tanya.
