Overkill to Fly High with Life of Agony and Death Angel on Friday Night
Still going strong nearly 40 years into their career, thrash-metal veterans Overkill have been traveling the country in support of their 17th LP, The Wings of War (stream it here), which brings them to New York City for the second-to-last stop on their Wings Over the U.S.A. Tour, on Friday night at PlayStation Theater. This is the first album to feature the band’s new drummer, Jason Bittner, who joins original members Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (vocals) and D.D. Verni (bass and vocals), and Dave Linsk (guitar and vocals) and Derek Tailer (guitar and vocals). This show also happens to be the only one on Overkill’s tour to include Brooklyn’s Life of Agony. After 12 years between albums, they put out the acclaimed A Place Where There’s No More Pain (stream it here), in 2017. Vocalist Mina Caputo and the rest of the band are known for their old-school street-punk sound. And they’re said to be working on their sixth studio album, tentatively due for a 2019 release. Bay Area thrash band Death Angel are out on the road behind their ninth studio album, Humanicide, which arrives at the end of May. Make sure to catch this thrash-metal extravaganza on Friday night at PlayStation Theater. —Elizabeth Ramanand | @Lizochka

We became good friends over all those years, I'm happy we are ALL still around and we can thrash Europe together. Also, some of the Australian boys from MESHIAAK have toured with us Down Under before with their predecessor band 4 ARM. What an intense family-reunion…hahaha!" Looking back on it's development, the time invested was all well worth it. The tonality of the guitar shines on it and the song goes 'other places', traditional with a touch of the down-low-dirty riff, and a sing-along chorus...personally, one of my favorites off The Wings of War." Legendary New Jersey thrashers OVERKILL will unleash their 19th studio record, The Wings Of War, on February 22, 2019 via Nuclear Blast . Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth comments, "It was a blast making The Wings of War! It is something old feeling new again, as our chemistry was altered by the addition of Jason Bittner.  I was curious from the get-go, how would it pan out?  I think what we accomplished here is a new, upgraded Overkill that embraced the new chemistry, while taking our roots into the present. The new formula produced not only more raw power, but more places to go with melody, a win, win. The key is being not only interested in the change, but part of it.  I'll tell you what, it's still fun as hell making Overkill records. The Wings Of War was recorded at Gear Recording Studio in New Jersey, SKH Studio in Florida and Jrod Productions with engineering handled by DD and Dave. The album was produced by the band while Chris "Zeuss" Harris.handled the mixing and mastering.

Katy Perry on How Her Shoe Line Will Be a Conversation Starter
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katy Perry has been keeping a secret.
In 2013, the Grammy-nominated singer’s “Prism” album sat atop global music charts and became one of the best-selling albums released that year.
But even as global fascination with the edgy pop songstress was skyrocketing, she was privately courting another passion.
Inspiring meetings with fashion industry veterans Tommy Hilfiger and the late Vince Camuto preceded visits to factories in the Tuscany region of Italy, as Perry nurtured an affinity for the world of shoe design and manufacturing.
“[Footwear] was a part of me that needed to be carefully created and developed, and I had to weigh a lot of my options,” Perry told Footwear News in an exclusive interview. “So for about three years, I was educating myself on the business and [thinking about] who would be a great partner.”
Ultimately, Perry and Global Brands Group Holding Ltd. — which owns and manages a roster of heavy-hitting fashion and entertainment labels — formed a joint venture yielding next month’s launch of Katy Perry Footwear.
The line — the first of several fashion projects for the singer, according to Perry and Global Brands — is an affordable take on the star’s bold, signature style.
To use her words: “It’s vibrant, expressive and defining.”
Tumblr media
For Perry, this recipe has been crucial in helping her to resonate with her diverse fan base.
“Here’s the thing: When I’m working or promoting music, or onstage, I don’t get the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation or meet everybody individually,” Perry said. “So the way I present myself can set the tone. It could be a conversation opener, just by my shoes or by the way I wear my nails — it could be [my form of] hello.”
And the way that the songstress says hello has appealed to fashion influencers since she achieved mainstream success in 2008.
“She’s a brilliant combination of high fashion and pop-culture references,” said Derek Blasberg, Vanity Fair’s “Our Man on the Street” and host of the television show “CNN Style.” “There’s a smile — but also a wink — in everything she does and everything she puts on.”
It makes sense then that Perry’s intentional storytelling has found its way into her footwear line. The collection features Easter Bunny flats that were inspired by a pair of Perry’s cherished Dalmatian-themed shoes she found after her move to L.A. to pursue music more than 15 years ago.
“I swear I started so many conversations because of those shoes. I had to get them resoled several times — and I didn’t have the money for it,” she said, recalling thrift shopping as a teenager and the early years in her career when money was scarce.
Those experiences were top of mind when Perry decided on a pricing strategy for her collection, which retails from $59 to $299.
“Not everybody is rich, and not everybody is excessive,” she said of her logic. “And everybody has more important things to spend their money on — whether it’s their children, or their family or their health. At the end of the day, your personality shouldn’t be so expensive to display.”
With the help of Global Brands, Perry found a winning price-value formula.
“We’ve learned through manufacturing and science that we can make things [with] better quality that don’t take so much time,” Perry said. “Applying all of this information makes a better product faster and with more options.”
To hash out the creative elements of the line, Perry enlisted her former stylist Johnny Wujek, who currently counts Shakira, Kate Mara and Laura Marano as clients. Wujek and Perry met at a party in L.A. nearly a decade ago and about a year before “I Kissed a Girl” catapulted her to stardom.
“Katy and I have always talked about doing a clothing line and shoes, so this was the perfect transition,” said Wujek, who is one of the creative directors on the line.
Today, he and Perry bring their “quirky twist on humor and fashion” to high-powered strategy meetings at Global Brands’ offices.
“Global Brands has a design team that has all of the trend forecasting knowledge, and we powwow,” Wujek explained. “I contribute images, and we pitch [our ideas] to Katy. She picks through what she likes and puts pictures in and takes pictures out, and then it goes into sketching.”
In between formal sessions, the team keeps the creative juices flowing via a WhatsApp group it created, aptly titled Sole Sisters. “We are just throwing ideas and screen grabs in there all the time,” Wujek said. “It’s just so much fun.”
Whimsical and wacky touches throughout the line — including a cigar-shaped heel on a series of mules and sandals inspired by Perry’s trip to Cuba — exemplify the range of unconventional ideas birthed during their sessions. Meanwhile, there is a currency-themed collection, which features shoes accented by monetary symbols, including a dollar sign and a golden nugget for a heel. Similar to the rest of the line, the looks feel like nods to Perry’s “shoe heroes” Charlotte Olympia and Sophia Webster.
Tumblr media
Jimmy Gabriel, president of footwear for Global Brands, said he’s banking on Perry’s imaginative fashion sense and broad appeal to snap up a solid share of the 16-to-40-year-old female market.
“In addition to her music, Katy Perry’s unique, signature style is followed by loyal and passionate
fans around the world — an ideal
foundation for a successful brand,” Gabriel said. “[Our] joint venture will capitalize on Katy’s creative vision, global reach and audience connection, as well as Global Brands’
expertise in building brands and its strong global relationships with distributors and retailers.”
So far, Macy’s Inc., Lord & Taylor, Amazon.com Inc. and Zappos have signed on to carry the collection. (The shoes will also be available on the brand’s proprietary e-commerce site.)
Mike Normart, senior director of women’s footwear at Zappos, said the e-tailer is looking forward to being one of the first to debut the line.
“Katy has cited her fascination with space and vacationing in the tropics as inspirations for the line and has been heavily involved in the design process,” Normart noted. “The result is designs that are fresh and fun.”
For his part, David Law, an SVP and GMM at Hudson’s Bay and Lord & Taylor, said he sees the collection — with styles that are “unique and different from anything else” on Lord & Taylor’s shoe floor — being a hit among the department store’s more daring shoppers.
“These are vibrant, colorful statement shoes; [they] will be a conversation starter,” Law said. “They’ll attract a customer who is confident, has a playful attitude toward fashion, and isn’t afraid to stand out.”
Tumblr media
Feedback from the collection’s debut at FN Platform last August as well as other retailers along the way has left Perry and Global Brands in a confident place ahead of the launch.
“I don’t want to be cocky, but it’s just about keeping up with demand right now, which is very exciting,” Perry said. “I think it’s evidence of the fruits of our labor, the great team we have around us and the vision they believe in.”
But that’s not to say that Perry doesn’t expect to do some fine-tuning as time goes on.
“I don’t operate in fear, but I think there are lessons to be learned,” she said.
Experience and practice in tow, Perry said the fashion industry can expect to see a lot more of her in the future — starting from thee feet up.
“I want to learn a lot, master it and become a serious contributor in the fashion world,” she said. “[I don’t want] to be a celebrity who overindulges and takes advantage of their position.”

I remember walking into a record store in 1989 and seeing a t-shirt with the name “Overkill” on it. At the time, I wasn’t into metal, so I looked at it oddly and moved along. Years later I wish I would have bought that t-shirt learning to love the thrash metal they generated since 1980. And as those years passed, I never had the opportunity to see them live. Until March 10, 2020, when the band invaded the House of Blues Orlando on their Wings Over the U.S.A. Tour. There was no way I was missing this opportunity. I’m glad I didn’t as it was a performance of a lifetime.
Opening up first that night was the band Hydraform. The progressive rock band out of Denver, CO got engaged with the crowd fairly quickly. The band consisting of Carter Pashko (vocals), Jay Streifer (guitar), John Jarvinen (bass), and Matt Gotlin-Sheehan (drums) delivered this interesting blended mix of aggressive and grooving stage presence. While Carter was using his guttural voice to belt out lyrics, John would be delivering a bass line that jived like rhythm and blues. Jay has excellent technical work on stage and Matt got hard and heavy on the drums. I was really impressed with John‘s picking technique on the bass as his style is not something you see frequently as he played high up the neck. The crowd enjoyed their performance cheering and applauding when they finished their set.

Next up was Exhorder the metal band out of New Orleans, LA. Originally founded in 1985 the band worked hard to get their first album Slaughter in the Vatican released in 1990 and then their follow-up The Law in 1992. But, ended up disbanding in 1994. In 2008, Exhorder came back on the scene and started writing new music. The band played a number of shows until they went on hiatus again in 2011. They came back in 2017 and signed with Nuclear Blast in 2018. By 2019 the band released their third album Mourn The Southern Skies. Right before starting this tour, their founding guitarist Vinnie LaBella parted ways with the band. Exhorder remains as Kyle Thomas (vocals), Marzi Montazeri (guitar), Jason Viebrooks (bass), and Sasha Horn (drums).
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Exhorder hit the crowd hard and heavy as soon as they hit the stage. Kyle was extremely amped up on stage urging the crowd to get crazy. Exhorder kicked it off with “My Time” from Mourn The Southern Skies playing hard and fast getting the crowd truly moving. Kyle was an animal on stage banging his head, singing hard, and looked thrilled performing for the audience. They followed up with “Unforgiven” and “Slaughter In The Vatican” giving the crowd some old school music as well. Though it was a very short set, Exhorder entertained the crowd very well providing them with some old school fashion metal. You can find their music and merchandise HERE. Their setlist that night was:
My Time
Unforgiven
Slaughter In The Vatican
(Cadence of) The Dirge
Legions of Death
Hallowed Sound
Desecrator
Finally our headliners Overkill were ready to take the stage. The band from New Jersey formed back in the 1980s during the time of other famous metal and thrash bands made their rise to fame. Working hard through local clubs and bars the band was able to release a demo titled Power in Black the band was able to release a separate self-titled EP. That EP led them to being signed with Megaforce Records and in 1985 released their first full-length album Feel The Fire. That led to the band releasing their second album Taking Over in 1987 which hit the Billboard 200 peaking at #191. The band’s success only took off from there continuing to hit the Billboard charts. The band released a total of 19 studio albums, 1 cover album, 3 EPs, and 3 live albums during their career. Their most recent album The Wings of War was released on February 22, 2019. Not only did it hit the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at #158, the album also made it onto the Billboard Independent Album chart peaking at #3 and the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart peaking at #9. Overkill is Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (vocals), D.D. Verni (bass), Dave Linsk (lead guitar), Derek Tailer (rhythm guitar), and Jason Bittner (drums).

As we waited in the photo pit for the band to come on I had pondered what song they would open with (not looking at prior setlists from other shows). I hoped for one single and my hopes came true once the lights dropped. That infamous thumping for the opening of “Last Man Standing” from The Wings of War rang through the speakers and then Overkill hit the stage to deliver it so perfectly. Bobby’s vocals live are just as good, if not better, than they sounded on the album and musically they were tearing it up. They followed up with “Electric Rattlesnake” from their 2017 album The Electric Age. It was all so good and we were just getting rolling.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
On stage Overkill is so animated, smiling and laughing at each other, getting into the music, and engaging the fans. Derek was having a blast throwing his guitar picks to the fans up in the balcony and out on the floor in front of him. What I didn’t expect was to have him gesture one towards me as I was taking a photo and then whip his arm back and bean me with it right in the chest! I laughed, Derek laughed, and he continued on having fun with the photographers while we were still in the pit. Fortunately, my friend Bryan found the pick and gave it to me. While Dave kept it cool and collected while he played, D.D. was super intense on stage strumming out bass riffs while headbanging away. Jason hid behind the drums for most of the show on the riser, but when we could see him, he was head down ripping out drumbeats like a rapid-fire machinegun. Bobby worked his vocal magic all over the stage and sometimes leaving the band to rip out some great instrumentals.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Their selection of music that night was fantastic picking out a great selection of songs. Some of my personal favorites from that night included “Hello From the Gutter” from the 1988 album Under the Influence, “Head of a Pin” also from The Wings of War, “Necroshine” the title track from their 1999 album, and “Mean, Green, Killing Machine” from their 2017 album The Grinding Wheel. It was a 12 song setlist before they left the stage waiting for the crowd to chant “OVERKILL! OVERKILL! OVERKILL!” and then come back to the stage. It was a great 5 song encore including a fantastic performance of “Fuck You” a cover of the song by The Subhumans off their Fuck You EP. Bobby had the whole crowd singing along and giving their middle fingers in the air singing “Fuck you!”.  They also played “Welcome to the Garden State” from The Wings of War paying homage to their home state of New Jersey. They finished up with another short version of “Fuck You” thanking the crowd for a great night before leaving the stage. You can find Overkill music and merchandise at their website HERE. Their setlist that night was:
Last Man Standing
Electric Rattlesnake
Hello From the Gutter
Elimination
Bring Me the Night
Head of a Pin
Necroshine
Under One
Bastard Nation
Mean, Green, Killing Machine
Feel the Fire
Ironbound
Encore:
Coma
Rotten to the Core
Fuck You (The Subhumans cover)
Welcome to the Garden State
Fuck You (The Subhumans cover) (Reprise)
This was such an amazing show and worth the wait after all these years. Overkill not only puts on a spectacular live performance, they have a great catalog of music that is worth listening to over and over again. Don’t miss out the next time Overkill comes to your city!
From The Pit To The Crowd: Overkill with Exhorder and Hydraform – House of Blues Orlando – Lake Buena Vista FL – March 10, 2020 I remember walking into a record store in 1989 and seeing a t-shirt with the name…
