To commemorate Cutie Honey's 50th anniversary, I wanted to post trivia for all 25 episodes. We'll start this week with the first episode: "The Black Claw Grips The Heart."

In the early drafts Honey Kisaragi was originally Honey Tachibana. Honey’s finalized surname name, “Kisaragi” (如月) is a traditional name for February in the Japanese calendar. It refers to the seasonal “changing of clothes.” The name "Honey" comes from the American TV series Honey West.

Honey was voiced by Eiko Masuyama, who would reprise this role a few times over the years, notably in the Re: Cutie Honey audio drama and the Playstation game, Little Witching Mischiefs. She also had a guest spot in Cutey Honey Flash as Dr. Kisaragi’s old friend, Dr. Mitsuko Kanzaki.

St. Chapel Academy is located in Okutama, a mountainous area that’s about an hour and a half away from central Tokyo. St. Chapel itself was most likely inspired or at least named after the real life royal chapel, Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, France. The hymn the students sing during Mass in these early episodes is “Come, Thou Almighty King.”

The freckle-faced girl who stands next to Honey during Mass is her best friend and roommate, Natsuko Aki. Although she’s almost never referred to by her full name but rather “Nat-chan.” Her first name is in reference to natsu or “summer” while aki means “autumn.” In the original manga she is depicted as having pigtails rather than a bob cut and doesn’t have freckles. Natsuko’s anime design was modeled after an unnamed girl who appeared briefly in the Devilman manga.

Natsuko was voiced by Rihoko Yoshida, who’s best known for voicing the titular character in Little Witch Megu, Maria Grace Fried in UFO Robo Grendizer, and Michiru Saotome in Getter Robo. Yoshida would also voice Panther Zora in the 1995 PC-FX video game, Cutey Honey FX. Noriko Watanabe (Sister Jill, Mami) also voiced Natsuko occasionally for whenever Rihoko Yoshida was unavailable.

Honey’s goofy teacher Ms. Alphonne Louis Steinbeck III is based on a male character from Go Nagai’s Kikkai-kun manga. That same Alphonne also served as the basis for Akira Fudo’s teacher in the Devilman TV series. 

Ms. Alphonne was voiced by the late Noriko Tsukase, who had previously voiced Mr. Alphonne’s wife and son in Devilman. Although Ms. Alphonne appears in every other animated Honey series, this is the only version where she is voiced by a woman.

During the early production stages Seiji Hayami was known as Shun Kazami and was described as "falling in love with Honey, despite knowing she’s an android." He would also have a goofy little sister named Zuuko, who would question if she was really related to her handsome older brother. When the series details were finalized, Seiji became more of a comic relief character and his romantic chemistry with Honey was downplayed. 

Seiji was voiced by Katsuji Mori, who would go on to voice Dr. Kisaragi in Cutie Honey Universe.

Katsuji Mori revealed he had ad-libbed Seiji's lines during Honey's first transformation. Originally, Seiji had no dialogue in that scene.

Honey's motorcyclist form is called "Hurricane Honey" which is possibly an homage to Shotaro Ishinomori's Cyborg 009. The lead character, Joe Shimamura, is sometimes a professional car racer who goes by the nickname "Hurricane Joe."

Seiji refers to Hurricane Honey as kaminari musume (カミナリ娘) which translates to something like “thunder girl.” He’s actually referring to the kaminari zoku (カミナリ族) or “thunder tribes”, Japanese motorcycle gangs who were known for their loud and rowdy modified motorcycles.

Sister Jill is the manager of Panther Claw's Japanese branch and Panther Zora's younger sister. The "Sister" part of her name is likely a reference to a religious sister, circling back to Honey attending a Catholic school. In the original series pitch, she was known as Sister Zora.

Jill is voiced by the late Noriko Watanabe, who also voiced Junpei's girlfriend, Mami.

Black Claw’s name comes from the original series proposal, which described Panther Claw’s soldiers as being color coded. Potential opponents for Honey would’ve included Black Claw, Scarlet Claw, Cobalt Claw and Gold Claw. Each would have possessed a specific skill or element, for example, “Scarlet Claw” would’ve possessed fire powers. For whatever reason the whole color coded aspect was dropped but “Black Claw” was still used as the name for Honey’s first real adversary.

According to Cutey Honey Roman Album published by Tokuma Shoten in 1981, Honey's childhood memories are artificial. They were produced by Dr. Kisaragi because he wanted Honey to have childhood memories like any other human girl.

Dr. Takeshi Kisaragi was originally known as Dr. Seiji Tachibana in the original series proposal. In the original manga Dr. Kisaragi looks noticeably younger, has black hair, no glasses and a goatee instead of a mustache.

Originally, Honey was only going to transform once or twice during the first episode. Tomoharu Katsumata (director for episode one) requested that Honey use all of her main seven forms.

Some of the choreography from Honey and Black Claw’s fight is based on sequences from the Abashiri Family manga, specifically when the lead character Kikunosuke battles against teachers from Paradise Academy.

Junpei is based on Kichiza Abashiri from Go Nagai's The Abashiri Family manga. Kichiza is the youngest son of the Abashiri family and is a master of explosives. Junpei was voiced by Kazuko Sawada.

It’s probably worth noting Honey and Junpei are the only two characters to appear in every episode of Cutie Honey.

SAGE 2020: Fan Games

I’d hoped to have this article out a little bit sooner, but I overestimated how long it would take to write about some of these games. Whoops! Like I said when I outlined the posting “schedule” on the first day, we’re playing it fast and loose, so this is just what you get.

Today is the day I talk about fan games! And even though SAGE has “Sonic” right there in the acronym, it’s always hosted fan games from all types, so today we’ve got Mega Man, Mario, Rayman, and even fan games of fan games, if you can believe it.

Sonic Pinball Panic!

Pinball is one of those things where I’ve always been obsessed with it, but never very good at it. And now, with access to digital pinball collections like Pinball Arcade and Pinball FX, I don’t actually find myself playing as much pinball as I thought I would when I was 14 years old. Still, I find myself fascinated by a good pinball table, and this honestly caught me off guard. This could very easily be an official DLC release for one of those aforementioned pinball collections and I wouldn’t even bat an eyelash (in fact, if you ask me, this is better than Pinball FX, which has always had weird ball physics). This looks, sounds, and functions exactly like a real pinball table should. My complaints are minor: for starters, the table feels kind of easy. I’ve never been a pinball wizard, but I was losing balls left and right here and it still took a good 15 minutes before I finally got a game over. Score accumulation is also pretty slow; most pinball tables will dump millions and millions of points on you, but here, it felt like a struggle just to reach the 379k I finished with. Both contribute to the fact that the table feels a little flat, like it’s missing a spark to really put it over the top. And, third, it would be nice if it had controller support. The keyboard works just fine, here (it’s just pinball, after all) but I find that the triggers on a controller feel really good with pinball flippers, and mapping the plunger to the right stick is great, too. This is a Unity game, so I wouldn’t think it’d be that hard to hook it up to the controller mapper. Still, I came away impressed.

Mega Man: Perfect Blue

There are two things out there that always give me pause: fan-made Doom level packs, and Mega Man fan games. Fan made gaming content generally has problems when it comes to difficulty balancing anyway, but these games have earned a certain reputation for their difficulty, which creates a problem when you have content made by fans, for fans. This insularity means these things are usually way too hard for what I would consider “normal” people (read: casual fans and outsiders). Add on to the fact that I’d even say that there are official Mega Man games with bad difficulty balancing, and you have a recipe for frustration. Sadly, this is how I’d characterize Perfect Blue: though this introductory level isn’t impossibly hard, it’s definitely pushing that edge where it’s not very accommodating to someone who hasn’t played and finished every Classic Mega Man game ever made. It almost immediately throws you into scenarios where you have jumps you can barely reach, insta-kill spikes, and enemies that not only actively dodge your shots, but invincible enemies that launch counter attack homing missiles. And then it starts making you juggle all of this stuff, together, at the same time. None of this is insurmountable as long as you’re paying attention, but as a very casual Mega Man fan, it’s an unfriendly first impression and makes me worried about what the rest of the game is going to be like as the challenge naturally ramps up. For those hardcore Mega Man fans among you, the rest of this is solid, at least. The presentation and controls are excellent, and the new sprites are beautiful. It’s a game I’d love to enjoy when it’s done… but I’m assuming I’ll be left out in the cold. A shame, really, because there’s so much promise here.

Sonic and the Mayhem Master

There’s a lot to like about this game, but there’s a part of me that really wonders if this should even be considered a Sonic fan game. Mayhem Master’s depictions of Sonic and Amy Rose are atypical to put it mildly. Here, Sonic seems to be a bookish nerd of sorts, a sidekick to Amy Rose, who has been turned into a burnt out, cigar-smoking detective. Most of the game plays out as half an adventure game, half an RPG, where you roam around the world talking to NPCs and gather clues while being assaulted by random battles. The battle system is super off-the-wall, too, perhaps taking inspirations from games like Mario & Luigi and Undertale. This means that battles aren’t passive -- you spend most of each fight dodging or nullifying incoming attacks with simplistic action-based commands. It’s weird, and different, and occasionally even a little bit overwhelming. That’s kind of the whole game, really. It’s the sort of thing that really doesn’t feel like a Sonic game at all, but it also doesn’t feel bad. The artwork is very charming, I’m interested in seeing the characters develop, and there’s plenty of worldbuilding and mystery. Would this still be as intriguing if you removed the Sonic connection, even if it’s so threadbare? That’s a hard question to answer. I know that some of my interest in this game is seeing how it spins more familiar Sonic elements into something that’s completely different. Worth checking out, for curiosity’s sake if nothing else.

Sonic and the Dreamcatcher

This is a fairly brilliant little game with two unfortunate quirks. If you didn’t know, the special stages in the original Sonic the Hedgehog were inspired by an arcade game of the era called Cameltry, published by Taito in 1989. Now, Sonic’s special stages were different enough from Cameltry that it wasn’t a case of Sega outright stealing the gameplay, but there’s a clear lineage there, and it only becomes clearer when you compare the special stages in Sonic 4 Episode 1 to Cameltry (spoilers: in that game, they’re nearly identical). Dreamcatcher is also from this lineage, but is infinitely more charming than either Sonic 4 and maybe even Cameltry itself. The idea is that you must collect a specific number of blue spheres in order to reveal the Chaos Emerald, after which you have a limited amount of time to find and collect it. It’s very simple, but the presentation really sells the game’s charm. It’s just a game that looks good and sounds good, with an interesting premise executed very well. Also, you get a dedicated “& Knuckles” button to spawn infinite Knuckles to help you collect blue spheres and bash enemies. Being able to have unlimited numbers of these guys sounds like it would break the game, but once that countdown clock begins, the last thing you need is 20+ echidnas clogging up the route back to the emerald. The first quirk this game suffers from is that there’s only two levels. Parts of this have a very “game jam made in a weekend” vibe to it despite the rock-solid music, sound, and gameplay, and only having two levels contributes to that. Hopefully more are coming in the future. The other quirk? You can’t actually download this game -- it’s embedded in a webpage. I’m sure this is to make it easy to play on any platform with a web browser (phones, PCs, etc.) but I find myself greatly desiring a hard copy of this game that can live on my computer forever.

Sonic Galactic

Now here’s just a good old fashioned Sonic fan game. Though it clearly takes inspiration from Sonic Mania’s aesthetics in some places, it’s clearly doing its own thing, featuring not just the core cast of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, but also Fang the Sniper, and even a brand new character named Tunnel the Mole. Unlike a lot of Sonic fan games at SAGE, this appears to be using something besides Clickteam Fusion, Game Maker, or Unity. Here, it’s the “Hatch Game Engine,” whatever that is. Whatever the case may be, the game runs very well and is basically indistinguishable from just playing Sonic Mania. Visuals are sharp, music’s good, the two included boss fights are surprisingly fun to fight -- everything seems to be in order. As a result, there’s not really a lot to say. This is just a good, fun game. Anything else I’d say would come off sounding like nitpicks. For example, there’s no way to set graphics options yet, so the game is stuck in 2x Windowed mode. Fang and Tunnel are cute additions, but I wonder how much utility they have as characters. Unless I missed something, Fang’s pop gun is mainly for a weak double-jump ability, and Tunnel’s ability to dig and ricochet off floors, walls and ceilings is cool, but it doesn’t have quite the universal utility of Tails’ flight or Knuckles climbing and gliding. It’ll be interesting to see how or maybe even if their abilities have a chance to grow into something special. Anyway, like I said, those are nitpicks, so try to give this a shot if you can.

Sonic Robo-Blast!

Remasters seem to be a bit of a theme this SAGE, between Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit, Sonic 2 SMS, Sonic 1 Revisited, but this is perhaps the most surprising of them all: a loving remaster of the original Sonic Robo-Blast. SRB1 was perhaps one of the first true “landmark” fan games, given that it was basically a whole entire game that people could play. It's not a stretch to say that SRB1 probably helped kickstart the fan gaming community that still survives to this day -- I certainly owe my involvement in the community to seeing SRB1 for the first time. The problem is, as historically significant as the game might be, it’s nearly impossible to go back to nowadays -- it’s much, much too dated to be any fun. This remaster completely re-envisions SRB1 as a regular Sonic game, while also pulling in gameplay elements from Sonic Robo-Blast 2. It’s a bit of a time paradox mindwarp, but it helps give it a bit more personality than just making a bog-standard 2D Sonic. It works, aided by the fact the sprites, music and overall presentation are fantastic. The only downside is the Act 2 boss, which commits the cardinal sin of taking away player agency and making you wait around far too much. Here’s hoping this gets finished, because it’s definitely on my radar now.

Super Mario Flashback

This has been floating around for a few years now and I’m glad to see it’s finally starting to get some more substantial content as it moves towards becoming an actual game. That being said, this is also one of those games that’s kind of hard to talk about because it’s just… really polished. The art is incredible, it controls exactly like a Mario game, and there’s already a decent mixture of ideas at play in the demo. Anything else I’d say would sound like nitpicking -- like, for example, the backseat game designer in me wonders if maybe the game is prioritizing aesthetics a little too much. This is a wonderfully animated game, absolutely gorgeous, but some actions, like the butt-stomp and the wall kick, feel a bit sluggish, and I think it’s because they show off fancy animations. Even if it’s a split second, waiting for Mario to attach to a wall to kick off of it feels slow. Really, though, that’s an insignificant complaint. This demo is still well worth checking out.

Sonic Advance 4 Advanced

This game seems like a greatest-hits of Dimps best ideas, spanning the first Sonic Advance all the way to Sonic Rush. There’s just one problem: the game seems broken. Now, my desktop PC is starting to show its age. I built it four and a half years ago, and though it can handle game like Gears of War 5 on high settings at 60fps, slowly, newer games seem to be leaving it behind. That being said, I don’t think a game like Sonic Advance 4 here should be running at what appears to be half its intended speed. It also originally launched in a teeny-tiny window (we’re talking, like, smaller than a postage stamp) and even though the options menu has a toggle for full screen mode, it doesn’t want to work. Something about this game under the hood seems to be struggling very, very, VERY hard. It’s a shame, because if this actually played at the proper speed, it seems like it might actually be an alright game, if a bit complex and busy.

Sonic 2 SMS Remake

Here’s a game I was all buckled in expecting to enjoy. Like it says on the tin, this is a remake of Sonic 2 for the Master System (and Game Gear), but with wide screen visuals and huge expansions to the mechanics, roster of playable characters, and levels. On the outside it seems really impressive, and to a certain degree it is, but something about the controls feel a little off. Sonic’s heavier here than he is on the Master System, perhaps to simulate “real” Sonic physics a little more accurately, but you can also pretty much stop on a dime, and the combination of the two feels awkward. The camera also needs a lot of work, as it’s basic at best and does a poor job of letting you see what’s below (to the dev if you’re reading this: there’s actually video tutorials out there on how 2D scrolling cameras work, it might be worth looking a couple of them up). It also leans into some of the tech limitations of the Master System, like how you aren’t given any rings for boss fights (and even hiding the HUD, a move done to save on resources for the large enemy sprites). I could be picky on a bunch of other little stuff, too, like how the flight mechanics feel, but there are other games to play at SAGE and I’ve got at least two more articles to write. Needless to say, this is a solid (impressive, even) foundation but it’s missing a lot of late-stage polish to clean up the tiny little rough edges.

Rayman Redemption

I tell this story every so often, but it was about three quarters of the way through Rayman 2 on the Sega Dreamcast when it struck me, suddenly: I love this game. I was being chased by a pirate ship through some rickety bridges and even though I was dying over and over and over again, I realized I had been enjoying Rayman 2 enough that I might put it in my top ten Dreamcast games. But that was 2002, and the years haven’t been so kind to ol’ Rayman. From the strangely celebrity-infused Rayman 3, to the tragedy of Rayman 4 (eventually becoming Raving Rabbids) to the endless, careless ports of Rayman 2 to every platform under the sun, one gets the impression Ubisoft maybe didn’t know what to do with Rayman. Especially now, when most of Ubisoft’s games are some form of online live service or cookie cutter open world experience (or increasingly both). But the fans know what they want. Rayman Redemption takes the original 1995 Rayman game and lovingly gives it a fresh coat of paint. The results are akin to what Taxman and Stealth did for Sonic CD in 2011, with wide screen visuals, improved controls, touched up level design, but gameplay that still feels faithful and accurate to the original experience. Except that Sega charged money for that, and here, fans have released this for free. Ubisoft’s loss, I guess. I didn’t play Rayman 1 until well after I’d finished Rayman 2, and I’ll admit, I kind of bounced off of it back then. It felt slow, and awkward, and when the difficulty ramped up, it got very hard, very quickly. Now, admittedly, I’ve only put about 30 minutes into Redemption here, but just the addition of a run button is incredibly welcome, and the retooled level design and powerup mechanics helps the game feel way less obtuse overall. It’s just a cleaner, tighter, more accessible and more polished version of Rayman.

Green Lantern: What Guy Gardner Means for the HBO Series

When HBO Max announced its Green Lantern live-action television series, speculation ran rampant on how the DC galactic superhero mantle would be handled after Ryan Reynolds starred in the notorious 2011 film flop. However, that speculation has just narrowed, with the casting of headliner Finn Wittrock. The catch? Rather than playing famous hero Hal Jordan, Wittrock will instead star as machismo-addled antihero Guy Gardner, who will eventually be joined by other ring-wielders from the comic lore. It’s an intriguing development that will undoubtedly define the tone of the series.

Who is Guy Gardner? While that might sound like an easy question to longtime DC Comics readers, initiate fans only familiar with Green Lantern’s film and television iterations are likely unaware of the powder keg of un-PC repartee that the classic character’s live-action arrival prospectively wields for the eventually assembled onscreen ensemble. In fact, Gardner is so prominent that Warner Bros. Television’s notorious 1997 Justice League of America live-action television pilot used him as the titular team’s version of Green Lantern. However, it was essentially an adaptation nod in name only, since this version of Gardner, played by Matthew Settle, was hardly the impetuous loudmouth that fans knew and loved, and was instead a generic amalgam of Green Lantern tropes, and didn’t even retain his signature, Moe Howard-esque bowl cut; a mistake that hopefully won’t be repeated.

Consequently, the casting of Finn Wittrock, reported by Variety, will serve as the first onscreen version of Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern since that campy debacle. In reality, though, he will be the first proper live-action version, since said JLA pilot was essentially disposed of with a single CBS Sunday night airing on Dec. 28, 1997, and simply used Gardner’s name as a shell, possibly to leave an opening for Hal Jordan to turn up in the various unrealized superhero fare that Warner Bros. Pictures had on tap (which, ironically enough, might be the reason he’s being used now). Yet, the role could become a natural fit for 36-year-old American actor Wittrock (pictured below), who, as of late, has been making a habit of playing volatile characters, coming off a prominent role as institutionalized murderer Edmund Tolleson on Netflix series Ratched and—possibly by some cosmic coincidence—will play a character named Harry Gardner on the upcoming anthology iteration of FX’s American Horror Story. Wittrock’s Guy Gardner will operate under the creative auspices of writer/showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith.

Guy Gardner is the ultimate manifestation of masculinity and jingoism, one who operates with an actions-speak-louder-than-words ethos, all turned up to eleven. Moreover, he’s known to be a domineering member of heroic teams such as the Justice League who—more often than not—ends up clashing with his teammates as much as any supervillains. Interestingly, the character’s conception—by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane—in the March 1968-stamped Green Lantern Vol. 2 #59 was designed as a retcon twist to Hal Jordan’s origin story. While Jordan famously inherited the Green Lantern ring from mortally-wounded alien Abin Sur, it would later be revealed that Hal was one of two Earthlings selected as potential successors, and only earned the mantle due to his closer proximity to the dying Lantern. While Gardner’s more covetous side took hold after he was relegated to being a back-up Lantern, the ring’s ability to assess a person’s innate potential meant that a true hero resided beneath his rough-around-the-edges exterior.

While Gardner was initially depicted as aggressive and ambitious, the notoriety that eventually made him a comic book icon wasn’t quite there yet during his early appearances. Indeed, the bombastic personality that comic fans would come to embrace (ironically or not,) was an organic accident of sorts. Having been left in a coma for several years—after the combination of a bus accident, a ring battery malfunction and torture in the Phantom Zone—the character was revived by the Controllers during 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline. Yet, the newer, louder facets of Gardner’s personality came from Green Lantern artist Steve Englehart and artist Joe Staton, who dovetailed him with the idea of a figure who parodied the hyper-masculine action movie heroes of the time. Yet, the whole “organic accident” part of this rebirth resided in the fact that Gardner was so drastically different from Broome and Kane’s original iteration that he may as well had been a completely different character altogether, which would have instead yielded Englehart and Staton credit and royalties as the creators; a move they both regret to this day.

Gardner would gain significant prominence as the founding member of an all-new version of DC’s Justice League in 1987, in a run written by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis. There, his legend as a quixotic antihero was solidified in the team’s formation, during which his consistent badgering of Batman culminates in the Dark Knight knocking him out cold with a single punch. Yet, Gardner’s abusively traumatic childhood, along with a touch of dissociative identity disorder caused by his coma, was used to explain his often-bellicose nature. These character layers helped him emerge as an affectionately-damaged fan-favorite alternative Green Lanterns. It was a stride that was hit during a most accommodating era for such a personality, the late-1980s and early-1990s, when the concept of antiheroes was starting to have a prominent place in the comic book world; an era during which seemingly irredeemable villains were being positioned as protagonists in their own standalone titles. While Gardner did field a failed reinvention—fully-clad in black leather—in which he briefly called himself “Warrior,” he remains an A-lister in the DC Universe.

Regardless, Guy Gardner has frequently flown close to the edge of evilness, notably during a storyline in which possession of Sinestro’s yellow Qwardian Power Ring channeled malevolent, fear-based powers, but don’t expect a villain arc from Wittrock’s rendition on HBO Max’s Green Lantern. Rather, like in the comics, expect a brash-yet-bold source of tension in a team dynamic. With this version of Gardner said to come from an era-appropriate 1984, the plot will cross time itself to include a 1941 version of Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott (said to be depicted as a closeted FBI agent,) and half-alien Bree Jarta. Indeed, Gardner ultimately answers the clarion call of the Corps when the universe—as it often does—becomes besieged by some kind of existential threat.

PREMISE

Title: #1 Concept Document 

(The Tripping Friends)

Inspired by the animated video series of violent adventure and narrative - Happy Tree Friends. The series includes cute woodland creatures that go through a happy adventure which turns into extreme graphic violence that causes injuries and deaths.

“In this peaceful cartoon world, cute woodland friends love to gather for fun picnics, but a simple picnic can turn into a tragic incident that can break friendship and cause bloody violent deaths.”

This world revolves around puzzles and mystery that needs to be solved to advance to the next stage.

The introduction of the story shows three characters having a wonderful picnic in HappyVille. A disagreement between the three friends occurs when one of them decides to eat the ice cream dessert first and was rejected by the others. The conflict ultimately results in an argument that causes the one who wants to eat dessert to go violent and captures one of the friends and keeps them imprisoned in different locations. However, one of them was not taken due to its ability to escape.

This game then follows the survivor who is destined to save his friends and make peace with the crazy one. Throughout the journey, the hero will venture to three different stages, collecting clues along the way and solve puzzles in order to free the imprisoned friends. The prisoner is located in different stages (Happy Village, Dark Forest, and the Palace or Dungeon). When the hero reaches one of the locations, clues and hints that are collected along the way are required to solve puzzles, open mystery boxes, and to save the individuals. As the hero progresses throughout the stages, the difficulty of the game will increase and there will be more pathways for the hero to venture upon.

As the journey continues, the hero and the rescued friends will stumble into more clues and hints to rescue the last victim and to make peace with the crazy friend on the last stage. In order to save the friendship, the hero has to venture many difficult tasks and evil creature in the last stage. The ending of this story can be concluded in both tragic and harmony way depending on the strategies and choices users made.

System Design

Mechanics: We aim to build a choice driven game in Processing. In the game, the player can control the hero to walk horizontally and vertically in a steady pace; encounter clues or difficulties; make choices; collect clues and game clearance rewards.

The game provides different options to choose throughout the journey, the choices that players make will lead to an alternate path which can determine the ending of the game. Hence, the outcome of the game will be varied depends on the player’s performance and choices throughout the journey.

Interaction Design

Player uses the keyboard (UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT) to move the hero, spacebar to jump, and uses left mouse button to do other actions, for example, to select options and pathways. The points that the player gained from solving a puzzle will show on the screen, as well as countdowns when the player triggers it.  

Motivation Design

The key of the game revolves around the choices that player made, thus the outcome depends on the hero’s choice and solution solving skill. The more levels player passes through, the more clues and rewards player will collect, and the better outcome will be lead to rescue all of the victims.

Difficult Scaling

The difficulty of this game builds up through each level, causing the player to feel more and more challenging. For example, in the first level, the player has to choose based on his/ her observation and detection. Clues and hints will be hidden in the surrounding. The countdown of the player’s choice will be triggered as soon as the player finds the key clue that leads to the next level, and the countdown timer will decrease when level increases. Thus, the player will have the feeling of pressure as he/ she has less time to make choices.

With the help of various spiritual beings residing in this town, he slowly begins to uncover the dark past looming over the town and within it, a terrifying secret. Along the way he is accompanied by his best friend Kiyoshi Himura, the son of the head priest in town. Due to his father’s influence, Kiyoshi is often treated with respect despite his ties to Kohaku.

As the story continues he stumbles upon a woman named Rio Yamamoto, a former resident of this town. She returned to town to look for her missing younger brother, not believing that he ran away from home. This prompted Kohaku to help her with her investigation as he wanted to help and was also interested in the familiarity he felt around her.Together with Kiyoshi and Rio, the three discover the truth of the town and her missing brother.

THE HERO / PROTAGONIST:

Name: Kohaku Takenaka

Introduction: The townspeople think he’s a cursed child. In reality, he is a kind hearted young man who trips over the smallest rocks and is tired all the time. A delinquent not by choice. He is able to communicate with spirits but are still wary of their presences. He contains high spiritual energy which is why spirits become attracted to him.

Specialty: Can see spirits since he was a boy

THE STRANGER:

Name: Rio Yamamoto

Introduction: A quirky young woman, around the same age as the hero, who just moved back into town after leaving for school. She is strong willed and supportive despite not being able to see spirits but does her best. It very smart and knowledgeable.

Specialty: Information gathering, immune to spirits

THE BEST FRIEND:

Name: Kiyoshi Himura

Introduction: A charismatic young man who’s a childhood friend of the hero. His father is the head priest of the town. Saved by Kohaku from bullies when they were little, he looks up to Kohaku and trusts him. He learns martial arts to be able to stand up for himself.

Specialty: Makes fun of the hero, capable of martial arts

THE SIDEKICK/HELPER:

Name: Enenra ( nicknamed: En DIMPLE )

Introduction: A yokai who is born from bonfires and usually can only be seen by the pure of heart. It takes on a human form after it emerges. Kohaku finds it in a box in the junkyard and befriends it.

Species: Yokai ( a divine being of smoke and darkness)

The builder of Grand Theft Auto V’s coolest mods talks about what’s next

If you could be any superhero you wanted in the field covered by Grand Theft Auto V , who would it be?

Julio Cesar da Cruz Schwab is a 28 -year-old programmer and modder who live in Maring, Brazil. He goes by JulioNIB on YouTube and extends the GTA X Scripting canal, where he depicts off some of the coolest mods available for GTA V on PC.

Thanks to Schwab, you can play GTA V as Iron Man and the Hulk, use the grappling hook from the Just Cause line, and hacker traffic lights, smartphones, and other engineering like in Watch Dogs .

Schwab started his modding occupation with practice server scripts for Counter-Strike 1.6 and then worked on mods for Grand Theft Auto IV . His GTA IV mods included the ability to wing over Liberty City in an AC-1 30 gunship, utilizing Skyrims Fus Ro Dah wail on gullible pedestrians, and facing off against the Light-green Goblin as Spiderman.

Installation directions and downloads for Schwabs GTA IV and GTA V mods are available on the GTA X Scripting blog. He too posts report and updates to the GTA X Scripting Facebook page, and operates a Patreon where devotees can donate to support his mod development.

We spoke with JulioNIB via email about his job and where he hopes to go with it in the future.

What navigates your assortment as to which mods to work on ?

Basically, I scour on Google for seminars and stuff relevant to modding. A huge fraction of the best of my knowledge came from the GTAForums area, but the greater part of the things I do in my mods is a result of trying to tournament features in a way theyre not meant to be used.

Two of your coolest mods are Hulk and Iron Man. You’re currently working on The Flash, Superman, and Spider Man. Are you a comic book devotee, or do these mods originate more from fandom of superhero movies and television evidences ?

I usually try to acquire what my followers ask for more of. I like Spiderman, X-Men, the Hulk, Superman, and other references, but Im not a fan of comic books.

If age and technical restrictions were not such issues, which comic book reference not currently on your to-do schedule would you compose for GTA V ?

Thor is a good choice. Spiderman would be amazing. Any X-Men references, like Cyclops. Right now the biggest question is the required livings. We cant create custom animations.

You likewise like blending other open-world plays, like Watch Dogs and Just Cause , into GTA V . What “wouldve been” your dream mash-up with GTA V , again if time and technical restraints were not an issue ?

I told that GTA is “any game” we want it to be. One situation that would be very cool is a terminated superhero/ villains mode where the city would sustain onslaughts from aliens or other-dimensional ogres and we( in multiplayer) need to save the city.

But if “youre talking about” raising other play peculiarities to GTA V I would like to see boasts from Prototype or Infamous in GTA V . I never played those recreations but they seem really cool in the videos out there that Ive seen.

Are the superhero mods more difficult to develop than video games mash-up mods ?

The superhero mods are easier in a certain acces. I can choose boasts to include or neglect because we dont have a recipe of all the features necessary.

When building something like the Watch Dogs mod I need to see in-game how things react. Theres a tailor-made HUD or UI and a lot of details, so its more difficult.

The biggest challenge with the superhero mods is the animation and FX required to simulate the powers.

Are there other GTA modders whose handiwork you follow and enjoy, and who you think devotees of GTA mods ought to watch ?

In the past Ive operated either directly or indirectly with other modders like SkylineGTRFreak, Metalwarz, ac.amir, Boblester, and many others. They are cool and saw is a great pleasure mods.

Is all of this purely for enjoyable, or do you are interested in get noticed and get a job in video game growing ?

It started for fun and has now become a really delightful responsibility!

A job developing plays would be interesting. This time I want to start researching mobile app developing, or to try and constitute something in Unity or Unreal Engine. Some indie developers have asked me to help them with some projects, but I dont have the knowledge to help them at the moment.
