Pornhub has shut down access in Texas.
Pornhub wants you to know its feelings hurt over Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton, 23-50627 (5th Cir. 2024).
CV NEWS FEED // Pornhub has ceased offering its explicit website in the state of Texas, citing the Lone Star State’s passage of a law that protects children from viewing online pornography. The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday that visitors who attempt to access Pornhub’s site from Texas “are now greeted with a long message from the company railing against the legal change as ‘ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous.’” “The company calls for age verification by the makers of devices that let people on the internet, instead of individual websites,” the Chronicle added. Pornhub wrote in its message to users: “As you may know, your elected officials in Texas are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you to access our website.”***
Oh, no. If you're a Texan who like pr0n, how will you survive?

Testify against Clinton or something?
Police said the Boeing whistleblower found dead in his car outside a South Carolina hotel last Saturday was found with a "silver handgun" and a "white piece of paper that closely resembled a note," Newsweek reported Friday. The Charleston Police Department said it was still making inquiries about John Barnett, who was discovered in a hotel car park with a single gunshot wound to the head.*** A coroner’s report said Barnett, 62, died from a "self-inflicted" wound, though a close family friend of Barnett’s told WCIV-TV,"I know he did not commit suicide." "He wasn't concerned about safety because I asked him," the friend said. "I said, 'Aren't you scared?' And he said, 'No, I ain't scared, but if anything happens to me, it's not suicide.' Colorado Prison Director is "TRAVIS TRANI?"
Colorado is poised to become the first state in the country with segregated holding cells for transgender women in prison, if a judge signs off on it. After a class action lawsuit was filed by several transgender inmates in 2019 against the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) alleging discrimination, harassment and assault, a judge is scheduled to rule on a consent decree that would bring further changes – including surgical sex changes and hormone treatment – to the state's penitentiary, Fox News Digital has learned. The consent decree, a court-ordered settlement in a legal dispute, would also require all trans women currently or previously in CDOC to receive a $2.1 million payout, depending on the severity of the alleged assault, discrimination and harassment while in prison. Rewards could range from $1,000 to $10,000 per plaintiff. *** The decree would enact several changes. First, it would create two separate housing units for transgender women inmates: the "Voluntary Transgender Unit" (VTU) at the men's Sterling Correctional Facility, and the "Integration Unit" (IU) at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility.*** Greisen told Fox News Digital the decree would also "allow the class members to transition to gender-affirming housing at the women’s facility, and ensure that necessary medical and mental health treatment will be provided." *** https://www.foxnews.com/politics/colorado-to-become-the-first-state-to-build-separate-inmate-units-for-transgender-women

Keith Rivers, 46, now known as "Cupcake," is currently serving a life sentence for murdering a victim outside a tavern in 1999. According to the class action lawsuit, Rivers came out as transgender in 2004 *** Another plaintiff, Andre Karpierz, 47, who goes by "Lavinya," is also serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for first degree murder. Karpierz is currently being held in the Denver Womens Correctional Facility, according to CDOC records.

Military aide must ‘dummy cord’ nuclear football after leaving it on Biden’s Corvette
"I guess finger sandwiches are more important than nuclear security, huh?"
Whiskey Fueled Tirade March 18, 2024 THE WHITE HOUSE – Lt. Col. Jason Schmutz will be required to ‘dummy cord’ the President’s Emergency Satchel, commonly referred to as the ‘nuclear football,’ to his body after leaving it on top of President Biden’s 1967 Corvette Stingray, sources confirmed today. “What a f*cking newb,” White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients told the Duffel Blog. “The nuclear football sat on the hood of the President’s ‘shaggin’ wagon’ for the better part of an hour while Schmuckatelli was stuffing his face.” This is not the first time sensitive materials were left in the vicinity of the president’s sports car. In 2023, it came to light that President Biden had classified documents stored in his garage next to his Corvette.*** Sources say Schmutz was eating lunch in the West Wing when he stopped eating and looked around his seat, turned pale, and ran out of the Navy Mess. By the time he reached the President’s Corvette, a Secret Service agent had secured the nuclear briefcase and handed it over to the White House Military Office sergeant major. “Missing something, sir?”, the sergeant major asked, the briefcase sitting on his desk next to a large spool of 550 paracord. “I spoke with the Chief of Staff and he thought it might be a good idea if we made it, uhh, a bit more difficult to leave your weapon system here behind, hooah?”*** “He messed up but I think he can still recover,” Schmutz’s colonel said as he signed career-ending UCMJ paperwork for an enlisted servicemember who lost his government cell phone. “He’s a good officer and man can he run fast.” At press time, Schmutz was seen walking toward Marine One next to the President, the nuclear football tethered to his Army Green Service Uniform belt. https://www.duffelblog.com/p/military-aide-must-dummy-cord-nuclear-football-after-leaving-it-on-biden-s-corvette

An expert who has testified in foster care cases across Colorado admits her evaluations are unscientific

Diane Baird had spent four decades evaluating the relationships of poor families with their children. But last May, in a downtown Denver conference room, with lawyers surrounding her and a court reporter transcribing, she was the one under the microscope. Baird, a social worker and professional expert witness, has routinely advocated in juvenile court cases across Colorado that foster children be adopted by or remain in the custody of their foster parents rather than being reunified with their typically lower-income birth parents or other family members. In the conference room, Baird was questioned for nine hours by a lawyer representing a birth family in a case out of rural Huerfano County, according to a recently released transcript of the deposition obtained by ProPublica. Was Baird’s method for evaluating these foster and birth families empirically tested? No, Baird answered: Her method is unpublished and unstandardized, and has remained “pretty much unchanged” since the 1980s. It doesn’t have those “standard validity and reliability things,” she admitted. “It’s not a scientific instrument,” Eli Hager reports.
If you thought social work was a science, I really must ask you to drop the crack pipe.

Aspiring drag queens have the right to Equal Protection
SHANGELA WAS A breakthrough star. With her sharp-tongued retorts, viral catchphrases, and distinctive Southern accent, the gregarious Texas drag queen quickly rose to become one of RuPaul’s Drag Race’s most beloved contestants. “[It’s] like ‘Angela’ with an ‘S-H,’” she explained on the show. “The debutantess of the Deep South.” Despite an early Season Two elimination when the queen was in her late twenties, a more polished version of the future star returned to the runway for two other installments in the show’s franchise. Drag Race fans often complain that she was robbed of the crown during her appearance on the show’s All Stars spinoff. “She’s amazing. We’ve actually put her on the show, like, three times?” RuPaul told Andy Cohen in 2022. “She’s a fabulous queen.”*** But behind the curtain — in hotel rooms and apartments — four people allege to Rolling Stone that Darius Jeremy (“DJ”) Pierce, the man behind the famous drag persona, either sexually assaulted them or attempted to have sex with them when they were too inebriated to consent. A fifth person claims Pierce attempted anal penetration in a bathroom closet despite rejecting his advances. *** Five people independently described nights out with Pierce when they were between the ages of 18 and 23. All five said that Pierce, nearly double their age and fresh off headline-grabbing spots on the silver screen and awards-show red carpets, drank with them through the late hours of the night and into the morning. The accusers all said they were acutely aware of Shangela’s celebrity status — three people said they were aspiring drag queens. *** https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/shangela-rupaul-drag-race-sexual-assault-1234974148/

Nemegtonykus citus
By Ripley Cook
Etymology: Nemget Claw
First Described By: Lee et al., 2019
Classification: Dinosauromorpha, Dinosauriformes, Dracohors, Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoromorpha, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Alvarezsauria, Alvarezsauroidea, Alvarezsauridae, Parvicursorinae
Status: Extinct
Time and Place: 70 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian of the Late Cretaceous
Nemegtonykus is known from the Nemegt Formation of Ömnögovi, Mongolia
Physical Description: Nemegtonykus is known from a partial skeleton, showing a one meter long, lightly built bipedal animal. Like other Alvarezsaurs, it had a long tail and long, thin legs. We don’t know much about its arms or head, but it’s reasonable to suppose it - like other Alvarezsaurs - would have had single thumb claws, and no other digits on its arms; and a small head, ending in a very pointed snout. Parvicursorines, like Nemegtonykus, were of the small and lightly-built vein of Alvarezsaurs - and the apparently much more diverse group - rather than the heavily built Patagonykines. As a small birdie dinosaur, Nemegtonykus would have been covered in feathers, and possibly even had small wing-like feathers on its arms as display structures.
Diet: Alvarezsaur diets is a bit of question - one of the most popular hypotheses is that Alvarezsaurs are insectivores, however there is still a question and they may have been more generalist omnivores.
By José Carlos Cortés
Behavior: Nemegtonykus, as an Alvarezsaur, would have been extremely specialized in speed - its legs were well built for running, both to escape predators and potentially search for prey. It also would have been fairly good at hopping, able to leap out of the way in times of danger or distress. It is possible that the little claws of Nemegtonykus would have been useful in digging up insects or other sources of food out of hard to reach places. Nemegtonykus, like other Alvarezsaurs, would have been a very skittish and anxious animal, using its ability to run to escape danger as quickly as possible. The feathers would have been useful both in thermoregulation (given its small size) and display to other members of the species; and it probably took care of its young to some extent.
Ecosystem: Nemegtonykus lived in the famous and diverse Nemegt Formation, an environment filled to bursting with different kinds of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. This was a vast wetland, flooded with river channels that created extensive lakes, mudflats, and floodplains, much like the modern Okavango Delta in Botswana. This swamp field was surrounded by extensive coniferous forests, where the ground became somewhat drier. This was an area of animals highly specialized for their environment - especially creatures specialized for feeding on water plants, making them all various kinds of vaguely-duck-like animals. There was Duck Satan Deinocheirus, and the ornithomimosaurs Gallimimus and Answerimimus who also had duck-like bills for feeding on soft plants. There was the Hadrosaur (Duck-Billed Dinosaur) Saurolophus, which also fed on soft, mushy plants; and the actual early duck-like thing, Teviornis. In terms of non-duck dinosaurs, there was the large tyrannosaur Tarbosaurus and the smaller Alioramus; Troodontids like Tochisaurus, Zanabazar, and Borogovia; a million kind of chickenparrots like Avimimus, Elmisaurus, Conchoraptor, Nemegtomaia, Nomingia, and Rinchenia; the Hesperornithine Brodavis; Pachycephalosaurs like Homalocephale and Prenocephale; Ankylosaurs such as Tarchia and Saichania; the titanosaur Nemegtosaurus; the Therizinosaur Therizinosaurus; the raptor Adasaurus; and another Alvarezsaur - Mononykus. There was also an Azhdarchid pterosaur, the mammal Buginbaatar, and a variety of crocodilians and turtles.
By Scott Reid
Other: Nemegtonykus was found alongside a specimen of Mononykus, potentially indicating that different Alvarezsaurs potentially socialized with each other, or at least didn’t avoid each other within their shared habitats. This may also indicate a level of niche partitioning between different Alvarezsaurs.

Americans Are Drinking More During The Pandemic (NPR) When the pandemic began spreading across the U.S. in March, stores, restaurants and schools closed down. But liquor stores in many parts of the U.S. were deemed essential and stayed open. Alcohol sales have ticked up during the pandemic, so maybe it’s a good time to ask yourself: Are you drinking more than you’d like to be? R. Lorraine Collins, a psychologist at the University of Buffalo, recommends asking yourself, “Are you keeping alcohol as ... a special beverage for limited situations, or are you engaging in alcohol use across the board?” A break from alcohol can lead to a range of outcomes. As we’ve reported, a 2016 British study of people who participated in a monthlong “Dry January” break, found that 82% said they felt a sense of achievement. “Better sleep” was cited by 62%, and 49% said they lost some weight. Maybe you hike farther, have better conversations or get better sleep. Notice if your life feels richer to you. If we’re stuck at home for now, why not give it a try? What do you have to lose?
‘Do as I say’: Anger as some politicians ignore virus rules (AP) Denver’s mayor flies to Mississippi to spend Thanksgiving with his family—after urging others to stay home. He later says he was thinking with “my heart and not my head.” A Pennsylvania mayor bans indoor dining, then eats at a restaurant in Maryland. The governor of Rhode Island is photographed at an indoor wine event as her state faces the nation’s second-highest virus rate. While people weigh whether it’s safe to go to work or the grocery store, the mayor of Austin, Texas, heads to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on a private jet after hosting a wedding for 20. California’s governor dines at a swanky French restaurant with lobbyists, none wearing masks, a day after San Francisco’s mayor was there for a birthday party. Both had recently imposed tough rules on restaurants, shops and activities to slow the spread of the virus. To the public’s chagrin, some of America’s political leaders have been caught preaching one thing on the coronavirus and practicing another. Sure, politicians have long been called out for hypocrisy. But during a pandemic that’s forced millions into seclusion and left many without paychecks, such actions can feel like a personal insult—reinforcing the idea “that some people just don’t have to follow the rules while the rest of us do,” says Rita Kirk, a professor of communications at Southern Methodist University. Pandemic-era hypocrisy has only deepened the polarization in a time already marked by division, emboldening those who doubt the seriousness of the virus and dividing people’s responses based on political affiliations.
Hacked networks will need to be burned ‘down to the ground’ (AP) It’s going to take months to kick elite hackers widely believed to be Russian out of the U.S. government networks they have been quietly rifling through since as far back as March in Washington’s worst cyberespionage failure on record. Experts say there simply are not enough skilled threat-hunting teams to duly identify all the government and private-sector systems that may have been hacked. FireEye, the cybersecurity company that discovered the intrusion into U.S. agencies and was among the victims, has already tallied dozens of casualties. It’s racing to identify more. “We have a serious problem. We don’t know what networks they are in, how deep they are, what access they have, what tools they left,” said Bruce Schneier, a prominent security expert and Harvard fellow. Many federal workers—and others in the private sector—must presume that unclassified networks are teeming with spies. Agencies will be more inclined to conduct sensitive government business on Signal, WhatsApp and other encrypted smartphone apps. The only way to be sure a network is clean is “to burn it down to the ground and rebuild it,” Schneier said.
College students recruited as teachers to keep schools open (AP) As the coronavirus sidelines huge numbers of educators, school districts around the country are aggressively recruiting substitute teachers, offering bonuses and waiving certification requirements in order to keep classrooms open. Coming to the rescue in many cases are college students who are themselves learning online or home for extended winter breaks. In Indiana, the 4,400-student Greenfield-Central school district about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Indianapolis made a plea for help as its substitute pool shrank. “I said, ‘If you’ve got a student who’s in college, maybe they’d like to work even a two-month thing for us—which would be a stopgap, no doubt—but it will help us a whole, whole bunch,” said Scott Kern, the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation director of human resources. Over a dozen college students answered the call including his own daughter, 19-year-old Grace Kern, who is studying medical imaging technology at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. She has been working in elementary school classrooms, helping students as teachers offer instruction remotely via a screen inside the room.
An Ex-Governor Is Gunned Down, Punctuating a Deadly Year for Mexico (NYT) The former governor of the state of Jalisco was gunned down early Friday while vacationing in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, the authorities said, a brazen killing that further illustrated the government’s struggles to rein in the deadly violence that has surged across Mexico over the past five years. The killing of the ex-governor, Aristóteles Sandoval, who was shot in the back inside a restaurant restroom, is one of the highest-profile political killings in Mexico in recent memory, security experts said. Mr. Sandoval was killed just hours before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his cabinet delivered a grim update on the nation’s security situation during a news conference. More than 31,000 murders were recorded in Mexico this year as of November, the latest month for which government statistics are available, a figure roughly on pace with 2019. But homicides have nearly doubled over the past five years.
Bosnian city of Mostar gets a vote (AP) Irma Baralija is looking forward to Sunday, when she intends to vote and hopes to win her race as the southern Bosnian city of Mostar holds its first local election in 12 years. To make that vote possible in her hometown, the 36-year-old Baralija had to sue Bosnia in the European Court of Human Rights for letting a stalemate between two major nationalist political parties prevent her, along about 100,000 other Mostar residents, from voting or running in a municipal election for over a decade. By winning in court in October 2019, Baralija believes she has “busted the myth (that nationalist parties) have been feeding to us, that an individual cannot move things forward, that we matter only as members of our ethnic groups.” Left without fully functioning institutions, Mostar—one of the impoverished Balkan country’s main tourist destinations—has seen its infrastructure crumble, trash repeatedly pile up on its streets and hazardous waste and wastewater treatment sludge dumped in its only landfill, which was supposed to be for non-hazardous waste.
India’s virus cases cross 10 million as new infections dip (AP) India’s confirmed coronavirus cases have crossed 10 million with new infections dipping to their lowest levels in three months, as the country prepares for a massive COVID-19 vaccination in the new year. Dr. Randeep Guleria, a government health expert, said India is keeping its fingers crossed as the cases tend to increase in winter months. India is home to some of the world’s biggest vaccine-makers and there are five vaccine candidates under different phases of trial in the country.
Israel’s top-secret Mossad looks to recruit via Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV (Washington Post) After decades in the shadows, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad, has been getting a lot of airtime, both on the news and in popular TV thrillers. In real life, details of operations attributed to Israel are in the open like never before, including the theft two years ago of a trove of nuclear secrets from inside Iran, last summer’s drive-by killing of al-Qaeda’s No. 2 in Tehran and the assassination last month of Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. And on the screen, streaming hits like Apple TV Plus’s “Tehran,” Netflix’s “The Spy” and Hulu’s “False Flag” have starred the Mossad as a cold, ruthless and efficient machine. Far from squirming, the once-supersecret agency has welcomed the exposure, former spies say. The Mossad needs recruits. Military veterans who might have once made their career in national service now leave to work for lucrative start-ups, or found their own. Israeli companies Waze, Wix, Viber and others were started by intelligence veterans. In response, Yossi Cohen, the Mossad’s director since 2016 and a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has embarked on a hiring spree, increased the agency’s number of sabotage operations and enlarged its budget by billions of shekels. The Mossad’s recruitment drive includes a heightened social media presence and a calculated trickle of unconfirmed information about its exploits. And former spies say the agency is quietly embracing a slew of TV shows and movies that could do for the agency what “Top Gun” famously did for naval recruitment: make a life in the organization seem cool again.
Chaos and jubilation as freed Nigerian schoolboys reunite with family (Reuters) Parents sobbed, mobbed their children in hugs and even kissed the ground in gratitude on Friday as they reunited with scores of schoolboys who had been kidnapped a week earlier in northwest Nigeria. Hundreds of adults jostled to find their offspring among the 344 dusty and dazed looking children who had arrived by bus in Katsina state on Friday morning. Those who succeeded cheered and grabbed their children, but scores more were still waiting by early evening. “I feel like God has granted me paradise because I am so happy,” said an ebullient Hamza Kankara after she found her son, Lawal, in the crowd. Another man knelt and kissed the ground, thanking God for the return of his young son, before clutching the boy and sobbing.

Heard the news about the dramatic new revision and understanding of cryptic subspecies of cutthroat trout, which complicates and changes how the US will approach preservation of the threatened greenback cutthroat? Essentially, the “greenback cutthroat” represents at least 2 distinct cryptic lineages of cutthroat trout, and Euro-American land management agencies had been rehabilitating the wrong fish.
“A cutthroat trout, once thought to be one of the true greenback cutthroat (Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias) feeds at the surface of a lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.” From Lindsay Fendt, for bioGraphic: “Resurrecting the Greenback, Take Two: After a case of mistaken identity, scientists face an upstream swim to save a fabled fish” (February 2019).
-
Despite all the attention that local land management agencies, outdoor recreation resort towns, and ultra-rich fly-fishing guide shops give to the “economic importance” (gross) of native cutthroat trout specifically, I still haven’t seen that many local land management agencies update distribution maps of cutthroat subspecies to reflect this pretty exciting research originally published in 2012. This is especially exciting to local enthusiasts of ecology, because the greenback cutthroat (Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias) is one of the most famous of the cutthroat subspecies; the greenback subspecies is Colorado’s formal “state fish” and was apparently understood to be endemic to waterways east of the Continental Divide, along the Front Range near Denver and Colorado Springs, making it one of the only cutthroat subspecies that lives in close proximity to the Great Plains. But it turns out that the greenback cutthroat is more diverse than originally thought. Basically, aside from the 3 known subspecies of cutthroat in Colorado, it seems that there were several (3) other cryptic lineages of cutthroat trout hanging out in the Colorado Rockies, but this has been difficult to detect because of how Euro-American land managers diluted native trout populations throughout the 20th century by stocking Colorado rivers with what they thought were the same subspecies (but were actually different subspecies) of cutthroat from different Colorado watersheds.
-----
This is important because it complicates the way that US agencies and Euro-American land management institutions were trying to remove protections for the greenback cutthroat. I highly recommend checking out Fendt’s great article. Here’s an excerpt:
It’s early October in northern Colorado, and aspen leaves are falling in droves onto the surface of West Creek, a small stream that flows through Rocky Mountain National Park’s southeast corner. Rain from the night before has cast a perfectly formed rainbow across the sky and is feeding an invigorated flow of water over the stream’s rocks. The backcountry scene is undisturbed aside from three men slowly plodding along the stream, their equipment emitting a rhythmic beeping over the sounds of the gurgling creek. Wading in the water is Chris Kennedy, a fish biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. [...] As they make their way upstream, the men fill a bucket with a species of trout that Kennedy’s team had painstakingly stocked in the stream in previous years. At the time, the trout were thought to be greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias), a critically threatened native subspecies that is also Colorado’s state fish. West Creek was one of more than a dozen sites where non-native fish were poisoned and removed to make way for greenback stocking, part of a 30-year, multi-million-dollar effort to restore the fish to its native range. The greenback was well on its way to being removed from the endangered species list when new genetic research changed the game. It turns out, the fish in Kennedy’s bucket aren’t greenbacks but a closely related cousin, a fish that was never actually native in these waters — and is abundant elsewhere.
Basically, Euro-American land managers had been rehabilitating the wrong fish.
-----
There were, up until this past decade, 9 recognized living subspecies of cutthroat trout.
Here are the 9 traditional subspecies:
-----
From the original 2012 research, by Metcalf et al, here is the “traditional” understanding of cutthroat biogeography in the Colorado Rockies, where it was presumed that there were 3 living subspecies and 1 extinct subspecies (O.c. macdonaldi):
And here is the new understanding, where the subspecies known as the Colorado River cutthroat (O.c. pleuriticus) is actually 3 separate cryptic lineages, and the subspecies known as the Greenback cutthroat (O.c. stomias) is actually 2 separate lineages.
-----
Here’s how cutthroat subspecies from west of the Continental Divide were introduced to watersheds east of the Divide:
-----
These maps come from the original article; the research was published here:
But there are also some shorter summaries available:
Excerpt: “With the insight afforded by the historical data, we now know with a great deal of certainty what cutthroat trout strains were here in Colorado before greenbacks declined in the early 20th century,” said Andrew Martin of CU’s ecology and evolutionary biology department. “And we finally know what a greenback cutthroat trout really is.”
---
Again, highly recommend Fendt’s article.

On March 26 Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell went on the Today show to deliver one message: “There is nothing fundamentally wrong with our economy.” Recently U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has appeared on the White House lawn to tell reporters that this is nothing like the last financial crisis. Fed regional bank presidents have appeared on cable news asserting that the Wall Street banks have plenty of capital and today’s economic distress is caused solely by the coronavirus. Even New York Times columnist and perpetual Wall Street cheerleader, Paul Krugman, was on CNBC this week reassuring viewers that today’s problem was not like the last financial crisis.
And yet – the facts keep getting in the way of this “official” narrative.
The first coronavirus COVID-19 case was discovered in China in December 2019 and didn’t become a major issue in the United States until February 2020. But on October 7, 2019 we reported that Wall Street banks had announced a staggering 68,000 job cuts as the Fed pumped $310 billion more in unprecedented loans to Wall Street. That doesn’t sound like there was “nothing fundamentally wrong with our economy,” the narrative that Powell is pushing.
On October 9 we reported that Powell had appeared at a speaking event in Denver at the National Association of Business Economists and acknowledged that a larger, long-term bailout of Wall Street was on its way. That also doesn’t sound like everything was fine in the financial world before the coronavirus hit.
On January 27, again before any reported death from coronavirus in the U.S., we reported that Fed Repos Have Plowed $6.6 Trillion to Wall Street in Four Months; That’s 34% of Its Feeding Tube During Epic Financial Crash. Again, that doesn’t sound like there was nothing fundamentally wrong before the coronavirus hit.

A dilemma solved by doing more of what caused the dilemma.
Now, let me explain. This past year I realized I had a serious dilemma on my hands. One that was taking over my life and plummeting my bank account. A disaster so large that I could not bare anymore. That dilemma: an addiction to shopping and traveling (as I was currently waiting at Gate A29 at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport).
Now, many of you may think to yourselves “yeah, yeah, yeah, we all like to shop. Everyone travels. Big whoop”. And yes, I would probably think the same if I were in your shoes, but unfortunately, I am not in your shoes. I am in my shoes... the fourth pair of shoes I’ve purchased this week... Now I am not saying I am facing an uncontrollable, absolutely chaotic situation that cannot be handled properly, but knowing my lack of control when it comes to these addictions, I am currently facing an uncontrollable, absolutely chaotic situation. This isn’t a scenario where you’re telling your best friend “oh my gosh Tiffany, I can’t stop shopping haha spent $20 on shoes today omg haha”, this is a oh my gosh where the heck did all of my bill money go it’s ALMOST THE END OF THE MONTH WHAT IF I’M SHORT THE FUNDS AHHHHH scenario.
So upon this realization (which occurred while I’m scrolling through Poshmark sending offer after offer to sellers, again sitting in the airport waiting for my plane to board), I come up with a solution that literally has been sitting in front of me this whole entire time. My grand plan to continue to feed my addictions yet not break the bank: Thrifting to Travel. I’ve seen all the posts about those Goodwill Outlets advertising $1.29/lb for clothing and yata yata. Well let me tell you, those Goodwill Outlets have saved both my mental health, my shopping addiction and have been the source of extra cash flow for my travel (and aid in the necessities of life such as eating out more than I should)!
I decided to check out my first Goodwill Outlet in Baltimore, MD area (I was traveling through the area, surprise, surprise) in June of 2019. Boy, oh boy what a great decision. My first thrifting haul resulted in nearly $20 items for around $10.... TOTAL....SCORE! After returning home, I worked to wash, photograph, and list on Poshmark. After listing nearly half my closet and my new fun, thrift finds that night, I sat down and thought to myself “yup, this is it. I’m gonna be rich, I’ve hit the jackpot”.
I did not in fact hit the jackpot right away. In fact, it took almost three weeks for me to make my first sale and boy when I make that $4.75 profit, I felt like I hit the jackpot all over again. Yes, a small sale, yes minimal return but it made me realize the profits that could be made while also, doing guess what, shopping.
It has now been four months since I decided to turn my shopping addiction into a thrifting and Poshing addiction and can confidently say that this addiction is not breaking the bank, in fact it’s replenishing (thank goodness because I was BROKE). Through my profits I have been able to make extra income on the side (I am in college full-time and also work as a server and bartender 40+ hours a week as well so no I’m not just being lazy and complaining... well I might be but still) AND, even better, FUND MY TRAVELING ADDICTION. I took part of my profits, booked a trip to Denver, CO and bam had a great four days exploring Colorado and Wyoming two weeks ago.
I’m starting this blog to tell of my experiences and excitements I find while thrifting, selling, and buying and of the travels, people, and places I encounter from here on out.
I’m also mainly starting this blog so that when I’m 85 and losing my noggin/memory I can look back and remember what I did.
So long for now, I saw cheap-ish flights to Los Angles during January and I’m going to need to make about 90 more sales before I can go so if you need me, I’ll be Poshing until I buy those tickets. Aaaah, the life of a thrifting and travel addict.
For anyone who needs some great clothing at great prices, check out my closet, follow it and HELP ME TRAVEL THE WORLD (and shop more).
poshmark.com/closet/megmtetrault (copy and paste the link, I promise it’ll be great for both you and me, maybe more so me but still).

Groundbreaking new weight loss product changes the face of dieting
See the video here for more info: http://bit.ly/WeightLossHack101
Denver, Colorado, USA - October, 1st 2019 - People who struggle to lose weight now have an easier, scientifically-proven option for breaking the weight gain cycle and shedding unwanted pounds: Leptitox. Sonya Rhodes just announced the release of a brand-new weight loss product. It is set for worldwide distribution as of October 2019 and is looking to change the dieting industry. Based on science-backed research on the underestimated and previously shrouded subject of leptin resistance, the all-natural supplements feature powerful herbs, select vitamins and amino acids to arm the body with the ability to fight and reverse leptin resistance—the cause of weight gain and obesity.
“Before we understood the role of leptin resistance in obesity and the inability to lose weight we had no other choice but to attack body fat in all the wrong ways,” says Sonya Rhodes, co-founder of Leptitox. “With the discovery of leptin, and the phenomenon of leptin resistance we finally know the right way to target the obesity epidemic we’re facing. And that’s what we’ve done with the Leptitox supplements; combined our awareness of leptin resistance with the desperation and despair people feel around their inability to lose weight when they’re doing everything they can.”
Determined to end the heartache of those who are overweight, and who don’t know how to combat it, Sonya Rhodes has taken it on herself to manufacture a product— Leptitox — which addresses the problem of leptin resistance as well as the initiating, underlying cause, breaking the weight gain cycle once and for all. As Sonya explains: “It was important that we not just treat the symptoms of weight gain, thereby managing the issue, but that we zero-in on the actual cause. We weren’t looking for superficial results, leaving people confused and feeding into the yo-yo trajectory diets are known for. Without addressing the cause we knew it wouldn’t be enough to really help people, and that was our mission.”
According to the extensive research Sonya Rhodes stands behind, leptin resistance stems from a source few people would acknowledge as a risk. This is why, according to Rhodes, the obesity epidemic has been able to spread as much as it has—we have blamed the wrong things and allowed the real cause to remain a normal staple of our lives. “This is how any problem proliferates, by not being stopped early on.” Sonya Rhodes continues, clearly passionate about the subject, “We didn’t nip the problem in the bud when we saw the initial spike of obesity and by that point it was too late anyway. If we had known what was making people gain weight we could have done something, but all we can do now is reverse it. Thankfully, that is what our supplements do. It’s not too late if we target the right things.”
Ideal for anyone who has struggled with seemingly stubborn and unresponsive body fat, leptitox attacks weight gain from the one place overlooked in the heath industry. Not only does it promote healthy weight loss, it helps curb hunger and detoxes the cause of leptin resistance right out of the body. Rhodes has created a product suitable for anyone who is tired of doing their best and seeing no results, and even better, the product itself is safe, all natural and suitable for a wide-range of people, with a no-risk 60 day money-back guarantee.
Leptitox supplements are currently available, having just been released to the public in the early fall. Purchasing the supplements also provides people with material created to inform the public of the true cause of their inability to lose weight, as well as providing the solution so they can easily adjust their lifestyle to make permanent changes. For Rhodes this is just the beginning, her purpose is to broadcast the reality of leptin resistance and it’s solution — leptitox—to the world, and really make a difference in the lives of people who have lost hope.

Colorado Trip 2019: Part 2: Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park was one of my favorite stops in Denver. I had never been up to Denver before so it was kind of new for me. This place was absolutely astonishing in its beauty and its grace. It was about late June when we went there and their was still snow in the Tundra. We saw a bunch of cool things out there so here we go!
When we first arrived we had unexpected company. We found a pull out by the ranger guard gate and there in the grass were about five or six Wild Turkey.
They were all in the grass feeding. We pulled up and didn’t even spook them they were just minding their own. These were all hens; we didn’t see any gobblers. This was a special treat for I don’t get to see Wild Turkey that often. I was able to get a better set of photos this time. The first time I ever photographed a Turkey was back in 2016 when I became a Master Naturalist while we were on our last training field trip. It was kind of cool to see a group of them feeding. They would pick at the grass tips and eat them. They may have been getting bugs too. On this trip I didn’t see too many bugs or things of that sort but I did see a bunch of other things that were just as cool as any bug.
Going up the mountains into the Tundra we saw a bunch of these large snow banks some were over five foot. My aunt had just got a new Jeep Wrangler and I had to heat the seats and put on a jacket. It was really chilly up there. It was nice but man it was like winter in the middle of summer. It was kind of weird and was kind of puzzling for me. Hey I am a southern guy I was born and raised in Texas and I don’t get to go to Colorado that often; let along going up into that kind of altitude so yeah it kind of threw me for a loop. This was one of the more interesting photos I took. Most of my shots from RMNP are of the scenes and not so much the wildlife. I have a lot of wildlife from this place on camera but there was a lot of cool things to look at in the mountain landscape. This was about 11,000 feet or so. We made it to the Alpine Visitor Center which is located at 12,800 feet up. This place is one of the wildest I have ever been too. You have to be very careful up here the weather can change pretty rapidly up here and you never know what might happen. This was a cool place to go but it can be dangerous more ways than one.
A shot of some female Elk feeding on the short grasses and shrubs of the Tundra. The Elk is most plentiful up here. It is one of the ones you will see when you are up here. Elk is one of the most common animals here. I saw a bunch up there and have a few other photos to share with you. This was one of the small herds we saw. There is one male in this photo but he is very young. If you look to the right side you will see a young one with what we call buttons on his head. They are called Buttons for they are not full antlers.
Here is a Big Male I photographed on one of the many hiking trails here at Rocky Mountain National Park. This was a twelve point buck. These Elk are not small creatures they are twice the size of a full grown white-tailed deer. These guys are pretty calm and laid back though. I have to admit my heart was in my throat when I saw this guy in the woods. A guy had told me at the trail head that I would see this big male about five minutes down the trail. He was right and he said it was a big male. My heart was in my throat when I saw this. I was amazed my its sheer size and majesty. I was trembling as I took the photos; it is something that I never will forget. In the Fall the breeding season is signaled when the bucks begin to bugle. Elk have one of the most eerie calls in the natural world. I say that the Common Loon has the most eerie sound in nature for its long call that echos. This guy was just laying in the grass as he chewed. He was probably chewing cud at that moment in time for he was not bending down. Deer like cows and other animals are called Ruminants which means they are cud chewers. They have a multiple chambered stomach and have a longer digestion process. Lets look at another creature shall we.
Here is one of the cutest animals in the Tundra. Meet the Yellow-bellied marmot! The first shot I got of this guy had a funny story to it. I was up at the Alpine Ranger Station asking about these guys. It was not two seconds after my question was answered when the ranger said “Sir there is one under the trash bin out there.” I thanked him and rushed out and sure enough he was under there with only its head exposed. All you could see was its head and little buck teeth. Soon though after a little bit he came out and I was able to get this full body shot minus some of the tail. They are in the same family as Woodchucks. These guys are quite common in the norther areas of the U.S. and up through Canada and Alaska. They are pretty common to see. This guy was fed up with all the tourists taking his photos so he made his exit by going behind a huge snow bank behind the Alpine Visitor center. A pretty cute creature.
Here is the coolest spot at the Rocky Mountain National Park. This is where one side of the river goes to the Pacific ocean and the other side goes to the Atlantic Ocean. This is the Continental Divide. This place is a little lower in a small valley. It was pretty much snowed over when we went here but it is a little farther from the Alpine Visitor center. This is one of the coolest spots on the driving tour. This is so neat to see where one river goes to two different directions in a huge split. A very cool place to travel too if you ever get the chance.
A cute little squirrel we saw before we left Rocky Mountain National Park. This is an American Red Squirrel and a new one for me. This guy was kind of cute and was pretty close. There was two but I was only able to get this one but I did manage to get several pictures of it before he scurried up the tree. These guys were jumping all over the place and were so cute. I am used to the Fox and Eastern Gray Squirrel. These guys are just a little cuter than our squirrel. Of course I do like Chipmunks a little better than squirrels. I am just that way. This was a really nosy character trying to figure out what I was doing. He looked right at me as I took this shot. I love to get shots when the animals are looking right at me. This one looks more curious than anything. Well this is pretty much all I got. In conclusion with many of our wild lands under constant threat it is important to donate and to explore these places and inspire others to do their part. We need to protect these wild lands for generations to come. Nature is wonderful and we need to do all we can to ensure the survival of all the wonderful species we have on this planet. So the next time you are traveling to a National Park consider donating a little bit. A little bit can go a long way. Until next time I am Zachary AKA Galactic_bug_man see you on the trail.

The Carnage Chapter two
*SEE WARNING AT TOP OF CHAPTER ONE*
Two:
South of Clover, Idaho.
In the early nineteen seventies, the sprawling Shaw Ranch raised over five thousand head of cattle, operated a full dairy and employed over one hundred workers that cared for every aspect of the ranch. They grew most of their feed but still required semi truck loads to be delivered during the final months before winter set in and seeing the ranch in its hay day was a sight to behold.
But now the ranch looked defunct and seriously aged. The animals were gone and in their place were the remains of old rotted hay stacks and rusting hulks of farm vehicles that littered the areas around the barns. Piles of scrap wood and tin along with half a dozen old tractors sat in the tall weeds that grew around the farm.
The California ranch style home was a large six bedroom structure that had two levels with over six thousand square feet of living space, the main floor being ground level and the second floor below. At its prime the house and property had been valued at nine million dollars, and while it still retained a good portion of that value, it was only due to the value of the land that surrounded it. The exterior of the house was in disrepair and needed a fresh coat of paint, but the interior was warm, clean and still inviting.
From as early as seventy five, the house had become the central hub of so many children in Clover due to the Shaw children having so many friends that it had been one of the most visited houses in Clover. The children had started calling the house, Blissful House and it was a name that stuck with the locals too. Seth made a wood sign that hung over the front door that said, “Welcome to Blissful House” in honor of all the children who had ensured its respected name in the community.
The farm was not the sole income the family earned. Seth may have had a bit of a tougher time if that had been the case, raising five children as well as he did. But Seth made his money in High rise construction and had been so successful that at the age of thirty he was able to buy the property that was now Shaw Ranch and build it up. He worked both places, but the ranch was his home.
He married his childhood sweetheart on Christmas day, in nineteen sixty nine while they were both still thirty. He built the house first and they moved in on their wedding day. They started having children right away. They were both eighty years old now and the children ran the construction business and over the years it had grown into an empire.
Seth would have liked to turn over the Ranch to one of his children, but none of them had any interest in keeping it going. They liked the city life and all of them had moved to Denver, Colorado where the head quarters of Shaw Construction was located. Every one of his children worked in the business and were listed as the owners of the construction business now along with their spouses. It seemed that Denver was the main attraction.
Seth managed the Ranch till he turned seventy. He supposed he could have kept it going, but he really didn’t want to worry about things anymore. So he sold off the animals and as much of the equipment as he could and focused on his lovely wife and little hobbies that he had enjoyed when he was a boy growing up in Texas. He kept a few of the old farm hands around still, living in their homes for free as it always had been and in exchange their children would do what needed to be done around the house and property that he himself couldn’t do.
He was in considerably good heath and didn’t look eighty, but he just attributed it to his work in construction and his absence in the use of alcohol and tobacco. Those were the two things he had never done, would not do and didn’t allow on his farm. He hated those things just as much as he hated drugs too, but he was of a mind that only strange hippy people did the drugs.
After giving birth to five children, Mabel had become a round plump woman and she was fine with that. She had known her husband liked that look in a woman and in the fifty years they had been married he had never once complained about her weight or looks. She could see the love he held for her in his eyes, in his gentle mannerisms towards her. In business, Seth could be ruthless and always expected perfection, but with her, he was soft, kind and gentle.
She had fallen in love with him the very first time she set eyes on him. He was tall, slender and a bit of a garish boy, wearing cloths not commonly seen on youth in those days. He had the good looks of Ronald Regan and the calmness of a panther while stalking it prey. There was always this in tension and conviction that seemed to surround him, but it also told her everything she needed to know. He wanted her and no one else. She always knew what he wanted and when he wanted it because of this.
They were ten when they met for that first time and she still recalled how his stare set her face on fire. She could read that face so well even then and she had fallen so hard for him that very day so many years ago. It had been Christmas day, nineteen forty nine when she first set eyes on him.
The weather that day in Dallas felt colder then it actually was. It was a clear day but the wind was blowing pretty hard making the normally cooler temperatures feel even colder. She had been at her grandmothers house for Christmas for the first time in four years and had gone out to ride her new bike. Seth had been across the street watching her. She had seen him when she first came out thru the garage, tossing a ball to another kid, but the entire neighborhood of kids was out that day playing with their new toys or bikes so she paid no real attention to them.
After she took several laps up and back on the street and she was getting ready to go back into the house due to how cold she felt, but she saw him standing in the street, just off the sidewalk with his hands clasped together in the front and looking at her like he had been waiting for her. She stopped in front of him and got lost looking at his eyes. It had been love since that moment for both.
Unlike so many other children, they never argued or fought over things or subjects. They talked in a calm, quiet way. You would have to be very close to hear their conversations, but you could always see the pleasant smiles they wore as they made their plans for the future.
Seth had always been sweet with her, buying her flowers and little gifts that always made her heart pound a little more. He never forgot a birthday, or a promise and had done everything he had said he would do. Mabel loved Seth so much. He had been a wonderful husband and a loving, caring father and he had been her life and she, his.
At diner time, they sat at the small table in the kitchen, where they could be close and hold hands just like they used to do when they were young. He was still a romantic after all these years and she hoped they would be together for another twenty years. The main table was only used when their kids came home and this year they were going to have to add all the extensions to it. They were going to have a very full house this Christmas.
This part of southern Idaho was cold, windy and generally miserable during the winter months and this December was no exception. The average daily temperatures were forecast to stay below freezing most of the month. But that would not stop the Shaw family from gathering on Christmas day since it had been a tradition for as long as any of them could remember.
The family didn’t just celebrate Christmas on that day, but also their parents anniversary and this year it was especially important. This was going to be their Golden Anniversary, meaning fifty years of marriage. It was a sure bet all their children would be there and maybe even some grand kids with great grand kids. It was going to be a fun event and Mabel and Seth Shaw were looking forward to it.
The first twenty one days were filled with all sorts of activities. Mabel had been busy cleaning and dusting all the bedrooms and cleaning the massive stacks of bed linens from the closet so that each person would have a nice clean place to sleep in. Seth had hired a company to come out and cut all the weeds down while the families that still worked for him helped to organize and re-stack the piles out around the property and made sure some of the barns would not be accessible to young children.
He parked his two large RV’s near the house and hooked them up to electricity and water and made sure the propane tanks were full. He knew his oldest son would also bring his RV and so he made sure the pad was cleaned and ready to be used. The huge old stack of rotting hay had a large net tied down over it, so it could not collapse on any of the children if they decided to go exploring. All kids liked to go exploring on his property and also play massive games of hide and seek.
When the first of the family started to arrive on the evening of the twenty first, all was ready and in good shape. Seth would have loved to have been able to put a new coat of pain on the house, but with the temperatures, it just was not possible.
