According to Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray insisted that Harold Ramis be cast as his friend in "Stripes" (1981) for two reasons: 1. They were long-time friends in real life. 2. So Ramis could help Murray re-write his dialogue or help him improvise. Ramis was initially reluctant to play the role of Russell Ziskey and Dennis Quaid auditioned for the role, but Murray was adamant about Ramis appearing in the film and said he would not do it without him. Quaid, who was married to co-star P.J. Soles at the time, appears as an extra during the graduation scene.
Murray and Soles did boot camp for three days. They both initially planned to wake up at 0500 and jog with real soldiers for two weeks. Soles, who plays the role of Stella, also played Pvt. Wanda Winter the year before in "Private Benjamin" (1980). Coincidentally, she wore the same uniform in both films.
Murray improvised the "Aunt Jemima Treatment" sequence and Soles reacted naturally to whatever he said and did.
The scene the morning after John Winger and MP Stella Hanson had sex in Gen. Barnicky's house, when they emerge from the trunk, is actually a lift from a cut scene when the guys and girls meet up in Germany. This lift is now something of a continuity error in the Special Edition DVD where those cut scenes in the German hotel are now restored. You can tell this because if you watch the decor of the general's bedroom and Winger and Hanson's wardrobe, it's the same clothing they're wearing in their German hotel suite and the general's decor and the suite are the same.
Murray agreed to do the film two weeks before shooting began. He did not show up until the third day of shooting because he was attending Chicago Cubs baseball games instead.
In 1993, Murray reflected, "I'm still a little queasy that I actually made a movie where I carry a machine gun. But I felt if you were rescuing your friends it was okay. It wasn't 'Reds' (1981) or anything, but it captured what it was like on an Army base: It was cold, you had to wear the same green clothes, you had to do a lot of physical stuff, you got treated pretty badly, and had bad coffee." (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Bill Murray! See less

Pretty Girl with a Pretty Boy
Tumblr media
Summary: Tom & Y/n are set on a Blind Double-Date, but instead of having chemistry with his date, Tom seems to have his eyes on his pretty friend.
"Blind date? I don't need a blind date." Brooker rolled his eyes, before taking a drag on his cig. "Why aren't you taking your little friend- Uh, Penhall."
"He has a girlfriend-"
"Really? Him?" Brooker hummed in curiosity. "I never would have thought."
Tom rolled his eyes, "Do you want to come or not?"
"Is she pretty?"
"How would I know? It's a blind date," Hanson groaned, tired of this. He wouldn't have to be doing all this if his date hadn't had a friend. Hell, he didn't even want to go on the date; He only did it to get out of the house. "So, yes or no?"
"You know what, Hanson? I'll go."
Hanson was surprised, in fact he had thought Brooker would say no. Though, maybe it was a sign? No, this could never be a good sign. Not with Brooker.
---
Tom was surprised when he saw Y/n sitting with a girl, which only caused him to groan. Tom had no idea that Y/n was his blind date's friend. If he had known, he swears he wouldn’t have brought Dennis Brooker. That idiot didn’t deserve a girl like you, Tom did!
"Damn, I thought she was going to be ugly. I'm glad I decided to come."
Tom was starting to wish he didn't come, too.
"Oh, Hanson, what a surprise," You reached out your hand, causing Tom to quickly shake it.
"Oh, Y/n, you know you can call me Tom."
"I didn't know you knew Tom, Y/n."
"All Law Enforcement meet each other at one point or another."
Brooker sat down, popping on his elbows, "You're a cop?"
"DA."
"Ah, you get those bastards out of jail."
"Everyone deserves a decent defense, even the guilty. That's the law."
"Yeah," He takes a swig of his drink, "But, it's like you guys are saying we can't do our jobs."
You chuckle, eyeing your friend, "Well, when you don't, it does make my job easier."
----
Tom tried paying attention to his date, he swears he did, but he kept getting dragged by your conversations. It was getting intense and he was starting to sense some tension. If there was one thing Brooker was good at, it was pissing people off.
"Doesn't Internal Affairs deal with dirty cops?"
"Well, yeah, but they're not real cops."
"What do you mean?" You tilted your head, leaning on your hand. "Not real cops?"
"Cops aren't supposed to break the law."
"They do all the time and they get away with it. You must not be very high on the IAB podium or you'd know that."
"Excuse me?" He got closer to you, intimidatingly.
You straightened up, "I don't understand what your problem is."
"I have a problem with you giving a bad name to cops."
"A bad name? I don't have to do that. They do it to themselves."
Tom could see Dennis' hand twitch and he quickly swerved the conversation.
"So Y/n, why DA instead of Prosecutor."
Your friend groaned. She had noticed the way that Tom was looking at you.
"Um, well... You know... I've always been good at finding loopholes," You turn to your friend as she whispers in your ear.
You look at her, before nodding your head. You turn to the males, before looking for the waitress.
Your friend yawns, "You know, it's getting late. We should be heading out. Let's get the check. Where is that waitress?"
-----
You fiddled with your purse, annoyed at the dinner. Who did that Dennis guy think he was? You felt a hand grab your shoulder, and you grabbed his hand and twisted it, before dropping it and realizing it was just Tom.
"Sorry, Tom. I thought you were...Well, someone else."
"I'm sorry... You know," He tilts his head back towards the restaurant, "For Brooker. He's a.... You know, hard-ass."
"He's something alright," He smiles, before holding out his hand, "How about I drive you home?"
"No, it's fine. I'll take a cab."
"You'd rather get into the car with a stranger than with a cop you know?"
"I'm sure your date could use a ride, pretty boy."
He smiles, looking down at your hands, "Well, I was hoping for a different date tonight."
"Are you hitting on me, Officer Hanson?" You point at his chest and he grabs your hand.
"And if I am?"
"Well, I'd ask where's your car, Lover Boy?"

Storia Di Musica #274 - AA.VV., Easy Rider (O.s.t.), 1969

This show represented my fourth time seeing The Cactus Blossoms live, and I would have gone in any case, since they always put on a great evening, but when I saw they were playing at this particular venue, I knew I had to go.
T.V. Eye (named after a Stooges song) has become one of my favorite small venues in the last few years. The back room has great sound, the front bar is actually enjoyable to hang out in (unlike, say, Mercury Lounge, where you're crammed into a narrow little corridor and it's nigh-on impossible to actually *get* to the bar, or move around, when there's a crowd...), and it has a pleasant outdoor patio space. In terms of quality, it's a solid night out.
It is also, and I cannot stress this enough, in the middle of absolute nowhere. It's not in the pleasant part of Ridgewood or the lively bit of Bushwick. It's stuck on a residential block near an AutoZone and a couple of gas stations. I don't mind this, personally; I've gotten used to going to shows in adventurous places (up loading docks, on the upper floor of an antiques warehouse...), but it amused me to see the groups of decidedly bewildered-looking people trickling in as the doors opened.
The other element of strangeness for me was the level of personal connection I have with the space. (This sounds like I'm bragging; I absolutely don't mean it that way. I'll talk about the actual show in a minute, I swear.) Numerous friends of mine from our corner of the local "scene" have played there; I was last there to see my buddy's Clash tribute band Straight to Hell in August. In January of 2023, I went to a memorial there for a former roommate of mine-- that story is not for the public, but I also feel like I can't *not* acknowledge it. T.V. Eye is one of a handful of rooms I've come to regard as home turf, at least in this current incarnation.
So, The Cactus Blossoms. I hadn't yet gotten around to their latest release, Every Time I Think About You-- but sometimes I think that's the best way to hear songs from a brand-new record: out in a room full of people. (If I'm 100% honest, I was a teensy bit let down by their previous album One Day; I felt like it was mostly missing the darker, eerie edge that made them so captivating early on.)
I decided on a whim to dress up more than I usually would; I have a lacy white dress with a full skirt that I hadn't worn in a while, and it ended up pairing remarkably well with a faded denim shirt I have kicking around. (Sadly, I think my old brown Teva boots, which are the best pair of dancing shoes I've ever owned, need to be retired. But I thought I'd give them one last twirl.) I said up above I wasn't bragging, but it's hard not to feel like *somebody* sitting in a corner booth in a flouncy skirt with a drink in your hand.
I enjoyed the opener, Erin Rae, from Nashville-- vivid, perceptive lyrics, and a striking voice. I've been trying, these last few months, to sing along with Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?", and what I can't nail is the *control* on those high notes-- Sandy Denny's voice seems so delicate, but the depth and surety of her tone is incredible. Erin Rae's sound struck me in a similar way. Later, during the Blossoms' set, they brought her out to sing on a cover of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Tonight, I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown", and the interplay of her harmony with Jack and Page was extra-special.
As for the fellas, well, they knocked it out of the park once again. A nicely varied set, featuring a few of my favorites from their earlier records along with the new stuff-- the guitarist, Jacob Hanson, took the already-smoldering final solo of "Boomerang" (from 2019's Easy Way) and turned it into a shimmering, spine-tingling jam. (I still want Alex Turner to cover that song one of these days; I don't know what it would take to make that happen but I feel like it's not out of the realm of possibility?) There was also a little more banter and chat between songs-- they've always had a lot of presence on stage, but they seemed particularly relaxed and cheerful. I was right up by the stage-- I thought about swiping a setlist at the end but some guy beat me to it. As usual, they managed the trick of a truly good concert-- to create this shared little world, this shelter where we can all stand for a while together.
Afterwards, I went and bought some CDs, and when I came back out to the bar, Page Burkum (the elder of the two brothers, who sings lead on "See It Through" and a few other songs) was right there, talking with some other people. I had decided that I wanted to say hello to at least one member of the band if I could manage it, and since the chance fairly fell into my lap, I walked over with a smile and did just that. We ended up chatting for a bit-- nothing terribly substantive, but he opened up when I mentioned that my dad had seen them play at the Wintergrass music festival in Bellevue, Washington last year, and I walked away with a satisfying handshake and my head held high. (Also, my favorite thing is when I say I'm from Missoula, and the other person goes, "Oh, I love it there! What a great town!" Because it is a great town.)
I'm seeing Fontaines D.C. on the 16th; that will be a very different evening. It's at a new (or, I guess refurbished) venue called the Brooklyn Paramount, which I have not yet been to. 2022 until now has basically been one long screeching catastrophe for your gal, but it seems like the chaos is ebbing for now. That feels like something to dance about.
