Comics I Read in 2024 Part 1
1. Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Adventures Year 1 Volume 2: Fractures by Robbie Morrison, Brian Williamson, Mariano Laclaustra, and Hi-Fi
Tumblr media
Continuing on with the adventures of 12 and Clara, we get two stories that as the reviews say, are very much like the TV show and the writers have a great command of Peter’s dialogue style and Jenna’s quick wit. The first story also involved Kate Stewart and Unit which was fun, but the story of a man who hopped multiverses to see his family was sad because it was the reason for the fractures. I loved the second story and the high stakes of a timelord Russian roulette game. Plus set in Vegas made for laughs as the Doctor shows Clara it isn’t about luck when it comes to winning. Only bummer is we must be in some other multiverse because Clara didn’t get to hang out with the ‘Ratpack’ but the ‘Wolfpack’ and it would have been fun to see those actual historical performers taking down aliens.
2. Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Adventures Year 2 Volume 4: The School of Death by Robbie Morrison, Rachael Stott, Ivan Nunes, and Marcio Menys
Tumblr media
Clara goes undercover to teach at a new private school where a friend of hers disappeared. The Doctor joins her and adopts a stuffed fish as a new companion in his mariner disguise… Still this was an enjoyable story because it involved Clara and the Doctor being told perfectly to Jenna and Peter’s performances and chemistry, but also the Sea Devils return in a much scarier way than what we saw in TV. I enjoyed seeing Clara be her teacher persona while also trying to help the Doctor. Plus cameos from Kate Stewart and Oswin and her Zygon twin were a great addition. And the mini story about the boneless returning and stealing people’s personas via comics was genius. But also is proof that these are set in an alternate universe since the comics were all based off real licensed work, with cute titles like The Amazonian’, ‘Spider Guy’, and ‘The Time Sturgeon’ lol.
3. Doctor Who: Ghost Stories by George Mann, Ivan Rodriguez, Pasquale Qualano, Dennis Calero, Dijjo Lima
Tumblr media
I didn’t know what to expect hopping back into the world of Grant and Lucy (aka the characters from the Return of Doctor Mysterio), but this was a nice collection of stories. We see Grant and Lucy 8 years later, though somehow Jennifer is 13… but the Doctor shows up, asking for Grant’s help to find the other crystals that gave others powers. One ended up being a jaded hero post-Grant’s time, another was  used badly by Harmony Shoal so it was cool to see them again, and the final surprise was the last one was used by the Sycorax. And they tried to take the blood from the Doctor from creating a huge weapon that would have killed billions so maybe I don’t feel so bad that Harriet Jones blew them up because who knew they were so threatening. It was also nice to see stories where Grant and Lucy shined without his powers which was the core message of the comic.
4. The Sandman: Seasons of Mists by Neil Gaiman, Kelley Jones, Malcolm Jones III, Mike Dringenberg, Matt Wagner, Dick Giordano, George Pratt, P. Craig Russell
Tumblr media
We return to the world of the Endless we get to meet the almost the full family minus a mysterious brother as Destiny gathers them in his hall to discuss a new and important issue, but he won’t say what except for the Fates showed up in his Realm and this is big. As the siblings bicker and plot, it comes out that Dream’s actions towards Nada thousands of years ago was unjust and so the Dreamlord decides he must return to Hell to save her, but when he gets there, Lucifer Morningstar instead informs him that Hell has been closed and he quits, prompting a power grab of Hell with Dream as the keeper of its key. It’s fascinating to see who turns up and who is vying for the prize, but I enjoy that Dream stays cool and collected even though he doesn’t know what to do. It’s still beautifully telling and gripping as the rest and knowing that this may be the storyline of the next season, I can’t wait to see it unfold on screen.
5. Saga Volume 6 by Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan
Tumblr media
I wasn’t expecting this novel to jump so far forward, but it was great to see where everyone was before they reunited with each other. Hazel and her grandmother were taken to a Landfall prison for refugees to be taken care of. While there, she bonds with her teacher and exposes her secret which prompts her teacher to take action to protect her and try to get her away from there so she wouldn’t be harmed. Little do they know, Marko and Alana have reunited and are searching for their daughter, raiding top level security places for information and recruiting a reluctant former Prince Robot IV to help them. Meanwhile, we see that the Will is still being haunted by the Stalk as he too is tracking down this family, but when he runs into the gossip journalists who are hoping to break the story now that his sister is gone, we see that his visions can be distorted and now he has sister to reckon with as well. Plus now that Alana is pregnant again, what does that mean since Hazel’s birth was so historic?
6. Red Hood and the Outlaws Volume 2: The Starfire by Scott Lobdell, Kenneth Rocafort, and Timothy Green II
Tumblr media
In this volume, we start off with Jason taking his gang to Gotham to take care of the final Hong Kong crime lord he never killed off, but then he gets pinged to help the Batfam protect a number of targets from the OWL assassins. It’s not clear why they are being targeting especially when one of them was Mr. Freeze, but it was fun to see Jason go up against him and Kori help take him out. The side story of the assassin Jason goes after having a similar background to Dick’s also seems to play with Jason’s emotions, but he ultimately gets the job done. Plus it was nice to see him and Tim have a moment. But then the rest of the comic focuses on Kori’s story saving Tamaran and she’s even dressed appropriately. The downside though was that she didn’t get to narrate her story. Instead Roy Harper gets most of that time and while I like Arsenal, it would have been nice to get more of Kori’s perspective outside of her conversations with people. Still it was interesting to see her feelings saving a world and her sister who she thought had failed her. Now that Tamaran’s been saved and she’s back on Earth it will be interesting to see what direction her story goes in.
7. Iyanu Child of Wonder Volume 2 by Roye Okupe and Godwin Akpan
Tumblr media
Catching up with Iyanu she is in the River settlement getting schooled on what it means to be a Child of Wonder and how she can use her powers. But trying to convince a young teen that she can save the world when her guardian is in danger is hard to overcome. But as we see how Remi isn’t all she was built up to be, it makes me wonder just who Iyanu is and how she did come to exist. Especially since she can see visions of the past and the guardians of Wonder who tried to save the world before. But we also now know just who how her nemesis is going to try and defeat her and of course its because he is messing with powers that are whispering to him to take more power. That’s always a bad sign, my dude. Still can’t wait to see what happens next especially now that the army Orefu has arrived.
8. Red Hood and the Outlaws Volume 3: Bizarro Returns by Scott Lobdell, Dexter Soy, Joe Bennet, and Taylor Kirkman
Tumblr media
I don’t know what happened between Vol. 2 & 3 that we got a new crew, but having red the webcomic, this is the Outlaw gang I love the most. Because Bizarro (though he goes on a journey in the volume) is a sweetheart and Artemis is the coolest. Plus we get a team up with the Suicide Squad and a special appearance from Nightwing which was awesome. But my confusion is the stories in this volume jump so wildly that it is hard to figure out the overall storyline. One second Bizarro is transformed into a super genius and trying to save the world from a catastrophe and then the final comic is about the Outlaws joining the circus with a normal Bizarro. Still I hope this is the team that moves forward because their dynamic together is also so much better in my opinion.
9. The Somewhat Incredible Jackie-boy Man #1 by James Asmus, Megan Huang, Dave Sharpe, Robert Meyers and Michele Abounader
Tumblr media
From the mind of Sean McLoughlin aka Jacksepticeye, comes the story of one of his alts, Jackie-boy Man. And while Sean didn’t write the comic, it was cool to see the backstory of one of these alt versions come to life. I like that Jackie is just a guy who is down on his luck too and that when he gets powers he knows he should try to do good but doesn’t fully understand what that means. I think more people would do what he does if given powers and not be fully in control or doing the right thing even though they think they are. Not sure when the next issue is coming out, but it will be interesting to see where this goes.
10. Void Silver #1 by Alejandro Arbona, Suzi Blake, Andrew Dalhouse, Dave Sharpe, Robert Meyers and Michele Abounader
Tumblr media
This is another of Sean’s alt creations, but honestly this one has so much more depth that it hooked me immediately. This is about Marvin the Magnificent, but before he obtains his magic powers. Instead its about a young Marvin who is interested in magic but doesn’t have powers. He gets called out by a random man on the street as being chosen and has a dream with a cosmic cat, telling him he is the chosen one. So he begins learning all about magic and it was nice to learn the rules of magic in this world through this training montage. But there’s a twist at the end when Marvin goes to take his entry exam to into the magic school that I didn’t see coming and neither did his poor mother who is exasperated through the whole book. Can’t wait to see how this continues and we get to meet Marvin.
