Application of bitumen in building
Bitumen has numerous applications in the construction industry, primarily serving as an adhesive and waterproofing material. Its versatile properties make it indispensable in various building-related functions. Here are some key applications of bitumen in construction:
1. Roofing and Waterproofing:
Bitumen 60/70 is extensively used in roofing systems to provide waterproof membranes for flat roofs. Traditional bitumen roofing membranes consist of layers of bitumen sprayed with aggregate, with a carrier fabric made of polyester or glass in between. Polymer-modified bitumen sheets have become the standard for flat roof waterproofing. Bituminous roofing membranes can also be recycled easily, enhancing their sustainability.
2. Wall Sealing:
Bitumen 60/70 plays a crucial role in sealing walls, providing protection against water and moisture intrusion. It is applied to substrates such as bathrooms and toilets, which are constantly exposed to moisture, to prevent water penetration and safeguard the underlying structures.
3. Floor and Wall Insulation:
Bitumen 80/100 insulation is widely employed for building waterproofing, both horizontally and vertically. It effectively prevents water penetration into floorboards and walls, offering reliable protection. Bitumen's chemical and physical properties make it easy to work with and highly durable.
4. Sound Insulation:
Bitumen's sound-absorbing properties find applications beyond construction. It helps reduce noise transmission, such as the sound of footsteps under floor coverings. Special tar mats in cars and elevators utilize Bitumen 80/100 for sound insulation.
5. Electrical Cable Insulation:
Bitumen's low electrical conductivity makes it suitable for use as an insulating material for electrical cables. It helps protect the cables and prevent electrical hazards.
6. Other Uses:
Bitumen 80/100 & bitumen 60/70 finds application in various other areas, such as the paper industry and the manufacturing of paints and varnishes. Its thermal insulation properties are beneficial in different contexts.
From an ecological standpoint, bitumen is highly regarded for its long lifespan. It remains a popular construction material, with significant demand both domestically and in international markets. The producer of bitumen in Iran exports a large percentage of its production to other countries such as Singapore, Dubai, Panama.
In residential construction, plastic-modified bitumen (KMB) coatings are commonly used for insulation. They compete with bitumen-free FPD (Flexible Polymer Disc) seals, which are easier to apply and offer faster repair options.
Overall, the applications of bitumen in the construction industry are extensive, ranging from roofing and waterproofing to sound insulation and electrical cable insulation. Its versatility and durability make it a valuable material in various building-related functions.
Important Considerations Before Using Bitumen:
1. Surface Preparation:
Before applying bitumen, it is crucial to ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and free from any contaminants. Even the presence of dust, dirt, or grease can hinder the adhesion of the bitumen coating and compromise the effectiveness of the seal. Additionally, the surface should be free from frost. If there are old incompatible coatings, they must be removed. In the case of older buildings, previous applications of bituminous paints may not provide a suitable surface for polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) coatings.
2. Repairing Cracks and Unevenness:
Prior to applying bitumen, any cracks or unevenness on the surface should be repaired using appropriate materials like repair mortar or leveling compounds. This ensures a smooth and uniform surface, promoting better adhesion and a more effective seal.
3. Additional Preparatory Measures:
In some cases, additional preparatory measures may be necessary. One option is to use a layer of synthetic resin on the coarse-pored bed or to apply a sealing slurry. A sealing slurry is a waterproof mixture of cement and plastic that allows water vapor to pass through. The advantage of using a sealing slurry is that it can adhere well to old bituminous coatings, providing an ideal substrate for applying a thick new bituminous coating.
By following these steps and ensuring proper surface preparation, you can optimize the adhesion and effectiveness of bitumen coatings in various applications.
What are the suitable means for repairing cracks and unevenness on the surface before applying bitumen?
There are several suitable means for repairing cracks and unevenness on the surface before applying bitumen. The choice of repair method depends on the severity of the damage and the specific requirements of the project. Here are some common methods for repairing cracks and unevenness:
1. Crack Fillers and Sealants:
For smaller cracks, crack fillers or sealants can be used. These materials, such as asphalt-based crack fillers or specialized concrete crack sealants, are designed to fill and seal cracks, preventing water infiltration and further damage. They are typically applied using a caulk gun or trowel.
2. Repair Mortar:
Repair mortars are suitable for filling larger cracks, holes, or areas of unevenness. These mortars are made from a blend of cement, sand, and additives to enhance adhesion and strength. They can be mixed with water to create a workable paste and then applied to the damaged areas using a trowel or other appropriate tools. Repair mortars are commonly used for repairing concrete surfaces.
3. Leveling Compounds:
Leveling compounds, also known as self-leveling underlayments or floor levelers, are used to create a smooth and level surface. These compounds are typically made from a blend of cement, fine aggregates, and additives. They have a fluid consistency that allows them to flow and self-level over uneven areas. Leveling compounds are commonly used to repair uneven concrete or subfloor surfaces before applying flooring materials.
4. Patching Mixtures:
Patching mixtures, such as asphalt patching compounds or repair mixes, are specifically designed for repairing asphalt surfaces. They typically contain a combination of asphalt binder, aggregates, and additives. These mixtures can be applied to fill potholes, repair damaged areas, or smooth out unevenness in asphalt surfaces.
5. Resurfacing:
In cases where the damage or unevenness is more extensive, resurfacing the entire surface may be necessary. This involves applying a new layer of bitumen or asphalt mixture over the existing surface to create a smooth and uniform finish. Resurfacing can help address multiple issues, including cracks, potholes, and unevenness.
It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and best practices when using any repair materials. Additionally, proper surface preparation, including cleaning and removing loose debris, is essential before applying any repair method.

So! I bought a house last year (sliiiiding into that disappearing middle class like Indiana Jones under a closing temple trap door). Decided that the bathroom needed to be remodeled because it had committed the dual sins of being unaesthetic and not up to code. After the initial stages of demolition (fun!) and installing new floor and toilet (2 months of portable toilet in the driveway - less fun!), it was time for the shower. Because I wanted to save money and gain DIY cred, I decided to tile the shower myself. (A professional did the plumbing and shower pan installation, though - I know my limits.) Today I share with you the fruits of my labor!
First, the classic pre- and post-glow-up shots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aaand let's take a look without the door so we can see all of that lovely tilework. (seriously, it was a fair bit of time getting that right) An unintended side effect of all this glossy black is that you get a sort of funhouse reflection in the tiles. I like it.
Tumblr media
You may have noticed the weird triangle piece in the corner. That's framing following the steeply-pitched roof line. The wood framing was actually missing in the bottom quarter of the triangle, opening up to a gaping hole in the wall. It looked like someone had hacked away chunks of it with a chisel, it was really odd. We covered it up with some wood and waterproof membrane. Anyway, tiling this part turned out to be not as big of a pain as I originally feared, and I think it makes the shower look a little cathedral-like. (It looks better in person, tbh.)
Tumblr media
Behold the shower niche! The colors of this bathroom are/will be white, black, brass, and emerald green. The house was built in 1930, so I wanted to make something that would match the rest of the house as well as my own aesthetic tastes.
Tumblr media
I laid the mosaic herringbone tile vertically and I love the way it turned out, with the zigzags echoing the shape of falling water. My partner wanted to align it perpendicularly so that everything was right angles, smh.
Tumblr media
And the final glamour shot.
Tumblr media
It's so nice to have proper showers on demand again! Now on to finishing the rest of the room...
Happy to answer any questions about the process. Thanks for stopping by!

C2 [Briar Rose]
Rose is peeling the fibrous outer layer of the fire-shoots, trying not to notice how it stains her hands blood-red. The fibers were good for weaving baskets, but not much else due to their toughness and waterproof membrane. The soft, mango-like interior of the fire-shoot is where the medicine is; Rose squeezes it out meticulously into a stone pot, squeezing so hard with her fingers that her knuckles turn white.
Rose looks over at Sage, who is obediently chopping the dead ends of the fire-shoot stalks so she can peel them faster. There are a kilo of fire-shoot stalks to prepare for cooking, and Sage’s strong hands and knife skills have made quick work of the wooden, dense ends. Rose allows her eyes to wander from Sage’s hands up the smooth, sculpted lines of his muscular forearms. Especially for his station, Sage is exceptionally strong but refined in his appearance and bearing; Rose imagines how easy it would be for Sage to lift her up and—
Rose shakes her head and focuses back on the task at hand. She hopes Sage hadn’t noticed her wandering eyes. Since Sage had become the imperial hunter, Rose often saw him outside the palace walls while she foraged medicine. When he had first come to the palace, she had been taken aback by his almost ethereal beauty. Now that they spent most nights together foraging, it was harder for her not to fantasize about his strength. Rose returns to squeezing the pulp from the fire-shoots that Sage is passing to her, forcing herself to focus.
I hope this will be enough medicine. The heat has been too oppressive for most medicinal plants to grow this spring. At this rate…
Rose bites her lip. Of all the places Rose has been medicine-keeper, being medicine keeper for this palace has been the safest. The emperor and his madam were discreet, and never questioned Rose’s coming and goings. All they wanted was Rose’s talent for medicine, and they were willing to meet Rose’s demands to ensure their only son could be healthy. In her decade of service, Rose had never failed to heal the crown prince from his bouts of illness. She couldn’t help but feel attached to the royal household, attached to the people who kept her safe from the outside world. If Rose lost the young master to this latest bout of illness or worse, was forced to use her magic to save him, then Rose would be forced to wander the world again. And that would be—
“Miss Rose? Do you need more help?” Sage’s deep but mellow voice breaks Rose’s train of thought. For an instant, the spark of fear is so strong that Rose feels a strange sensation; of seams pulling apart, of something vicious trying to break through to protect her. Rose digs her thumbnail into her hand, centering herself, willing the seams tight again. She forces a smile.
“Actually, yes. I know it’s hot outside and it’s late, but fire-shoots require steady and high heat to melt the proteins inside the pulp to medicine. If we work together to pump the foot-bellows, we have a better chance of getting good medicine than if I worked alone.” Rose hopes she sounds convincing. In reality, she hates being alone in the palace interior, hates the constant smell of medicinal incense that burns to keep the young master healthy, hates the artificial silence imposed whenever the young master fell sick. Rose knows she’ll go insane if the only thing she has to focus on is the prosaic hum of her neurons. Rose wanted company, wanted a warm body to talk to, even better if the body in question belonged to Sage.
To his credit, Sage seems to understand, or at least he doesn’t question her answer or complain. For a moment, Sage seems to blush as he swipes his bangs behind one ear. “I would be happy to help. Here, let me help you tie up your robe sleeves.”
Rose pulls away on instinct, not wanting her body uncovered. “That’s okay, the heat doesn’t bother me. Feel free to tie up your long pants, or even get down to your inner trousers. I don’t mind and I won’t look.” Rose turns away with a blush; she was absolutely going to look if offered the chance. For a human, Sage was tall and well-built, and Rose wanted to see just how slim his hips really were beneath the layers of stuffy robes this palace forced everyone to wear.
Rose grabs the stone pot—now filled to the brim with the guts of many fire-shoots—and places it in the fire. Based on the touch of the coals to her hands, the fire was nowhere near hot enough. Rose sighs. She gathers up her long white hair, pinning it up securely. She looks over at Sage. He has stripped down to his inner robe and trousers, and is focused on re-tying his sandals to his feet. Rose takes the opportunity to admire Sage’s smooth golden skin, the supple muscles of his exposed chest and arms.
He probably could have any of the servant girls that he wanted from the palace. Or has a new one each night. Rose thinks, stifling the jealous feelings that prick at the corners of her brain like static. It had been a long, long time since Rose had felt jealousy over any human; but Sage didn’t strike her as just “another human” from their interactions. Sage was always demure and kind with her, and Rose enjoyed feeling like Sage respected her authority.
Sage kneels next to Rose as she adds more wood to the hearth. “How should I prep the bellows?”
Rose thinks deeply for a moment. Based on the harshness of the heat this spring, animal herbivory was way down and thus the fire-shoots didn’t need to make as much of the spicy compound that made it medicinal; it was likely that the fire-shoot pulp needed to be melted down at high heat for the whole night to extract any useable medicine. Rose tests this by tasting a spoonful of pulp. In normal years, a spoonful of raw fire-shoot pulp would be the same as biting straight into a ghost pepper. In this year of record heat, this pulp wasn’t spicy at all. Even as Rose swished the pulp over her tongue, there was only the slight tingle, like tasting a single pepper grain.
“Prep the large bellows like we are firing clay pots. It’s going to be a long night.” Rose looks at Sage. His amethyst eyes seem to glitter as they reflect the light of the fire. Rose leans closer, heart thumping as the space closes between them. Rose has never seen eyes shaped like Sage’s in all her years of wandering: the foxy shape reminds her of her own eyes, of her own people. But Rose hadn’t seen another member of her kind hiding among humans for centuries. Rose sticks her nose practically in Sage’s face, trying to figure out if Sage was really human or not.
Sage mistakes Rose’s leaning in as her about to faint from exhaustion. “Miss Rose! Please, take a break.” He gently pulls her up into his arms, making Rose squeak in surprise. His muscles feel like coiled steel under soft skin. He takes Rose over to the water-well in the kitchen. The cool marble well is as cold as any glacier as Sage props Rose against it. “I’ll get you water, and I apologize for touching you with unclean hands. I hope it does not affect your medicine making.”
What was I thinking?! Rose shakes her head, disgusted with herself for letting her mind wander so badly. “Don’t worry. I know it’s said that hunters and butchers taint medicine because of your profession, but take heart that the rumor is untrue. And I’m fine, really. Just set up the bellows, I can draw my own water.”
Sage hesitates, but like the simple and polite boy he is, eventually nods. “Yes, Miss Rose.” He bows to her, before running back to the hearth. Rose only relaxes once his back is turned to her.
What is wrong with me? There’s no way he could be one of us. If he was, he would notice who I was and I would be in danger. Rose shakes her head. She uses the copper bucket to draw up water from the freezing well. The water is cold as snow, and tastes like swallowing pure ice. But the bracing cold helps Rose gather herself. Sage is just a human she finds cute. If Rose sticks to her little medicine-woman gimmick, sticks to staying safe, then Sage will just be another blip in her long memory. Nothing more than a momentary distraction, like a fly on the ear of a horse.
Rose splashes her face with water. She looks at her reflection in the water. For a moment, Rose sees her real face: the high cheekbones adorned with white velvet, the huge and upturned maroon eyes set into an angular face, towering white antlers and zebu-like ears. Rose frowns after her reflection before a droplet disturbs the water’s surface, the ripples returning the reflection to the face Rose has carefully crafted over her centuries of being alive: soft and plump red lips, round cheeks, and upswept eyes adorned by black eyebrows. Rose stares at her reflection a little longer, touching the top of her forehead to reassure herself her antlers aren’t present before turning back to Sage.
“Okay. Let’s get started: it’s going to be a long night.” Rose steps over to the bellows, resting one small, delicate foot on the metal paddle. She grips the overhead support rope, and she flashes a toothy smile at Sage as her eyes turn into joyful crescents.
Sage smiles back, his own eyes making the same shape. “Okay. But let me know if you need a break, okay? I can handle more than your soft body can.”
Rose giggles at Sage’s machismo.
If Sage only knew what Rose’s thousand-year-old body could handle.

Using LDPE Sheets for Waterproofing: Techniques and Tips
Waterproofing is a crucial aspect of construction that ensures the longevity and durability of structures. One effective solution that has gained popularity in recent years is the use of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) sheets. Known for their versatility and excellent waterproofing properties, LDPE sheets are increasingly being utilized in various construction applications. This article explores the techniques and tips for using LDPE sheets for waterproofing, highlighting the benefits and best practices for their application.
Before delving into waterproofing techniques, it is essential to understand what LDPE sheets are. LDPE is a type of thermoplastic made from the polymerization of ethylene. These sheets are lightweight, flexible, and resistant to moisture, making them ideal for various construction applications. When sourced from a reputable LDPE plastic sheet supplier, you can ensure quality and durability in your waterproofing projects. LDPE sheets are available in various thicknesses, colors, and sizes, making them adaptable to different needs.
Advantages of Using LDPE Sheets
One of the primary reasons for using LDPE sheets in waterproofing is their excellent moisture resistance. Unlike traditional materials, LDPE sheets do not absorb water, making them perfect for areas prone to dampness or flooding. Additionally, LDPE is resistant to chemicals and UV rays, ensuring that it maintains its integrity over time. This characteristic is particularly important for construction projects that involve exposure to harsh environmental conditions.
Preparing the Surface for LDPE Sheets
Proper surface preparation is critical for ensuring the effectiveness of LDPE sheets in waterproofing. Before installing the sheets, it is essential to clean the area thoroughly. Remove any debris, dust, or existing moisture, as these can compromise the adhesive properties of the sheets. In some cases, applying a primer can enhance adhesion and create a better bond between the LDPE sheet and the surface.
Installation Techniques for LDPE Sheets
1. Choosing the Right Thickness When selecting LDPE sheets for waterproofing, consider the thickness required for your specific project. Thicker sheets offer better durability and resistance to punctures, making them ideal for high-traffic areas or locations subject to heavy loads. However, thinner sheets may be sufficient for less demanding applications. A reliable LDPE sheet manufacturer in India can guide you in selecting the appropriate thickness based on your needs.
2. Applying Adhesive For effective waterproofing, applying the right adhesive is crucial. Various adhesives can be used with LDPE sheets, including solvent-based and water-based options. Additionally, ensure that the adhesive is compatible with both the LDPE sheet and the substrate material.
Apply the adhesive evenly on the surface where the LDPE sheet will be installed. Using a notched trowel can help achieve a uniform application, ensuring optimal adhesion. Once the adhesive is applied, carefully position the LDPE sheet, taking care to avoid air bubbles or wrinkles.
3. Sealing Joints and Edges To achieve a fully waterproof barrier, sealing the joints and edges of the LDPE sheets is essential. Overlapping the sheets at the seams helps create a continuous waterproof membrane. Use a compatible sealant or adhesive to secure the overlaps, ensuring a tight seal. This step is particularly important in areas exposed to significant water pressure, as any gaps can lead to leaks.
For added protection, consider using mechanical fasteners in conjunction with adhesive for high-stress areas. Fasteners can provide extra security and prevent the sheets from shifting over time, ensuring long-lasting waterproofing.
Tips for Maintaining LDPE Waterproofing
Regular Inspections After installing LDPE sheets for waterproofing, regular inspections are crucial to maintain their integrity. Look for signs of wear, such as punctures, tears, or discoloration. Address any issues immediately to prevent further damage and potential water infiltration.
Cleaning the Surface Keeping the surface of the LDPE sheets clean is essential for maintaining their effectiveness. Regularly remove debris, dirt, and algae that can accumulate on the surface. Use mild soap and water for cleaning, avoiding harsh chemicals that may damage the LDPE material.
Monitoring Environmental Conditions
Be mindful of environmental conditions that may affect the performance of LDPE sheets. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause expansion and contraction, potentially leading to stress on the seams. Monitoring these conditions can help you identify and address issues before they escalate.
Conclusion
Using LDPE sheets for waterproofing offers a practical and effective solution for various construction projects. Their moisture resistance, flexibility, and ease of installation make them a popular choice among builders and contractors. By following the techniques and tips outlined in this article, you can ensure successful waterproofing with LDPE sheet for Construction..
When sourcing LDPE sheets, it is essential to work with reputable LDPE plastic sheet suppliers and manufacturers. Doing so ensures that you receive high-quality materials that will enhance the durability and performance of your waterproofing efforts. Industrial Roofing Contractors Sydney
Industrial Roofing Contractors in Sydney: What to Consider for Your Project
When it comes to Industrial Roofing Contractors Sydney, choosing the right contractor is crucial. The city’s dynamic climate, marked by hot summers and unpredictable rainfall, demands roofing solutions that are both durable and expertly installed. Industrial roofing contractors play a pivotal role in ensuring that your facility’s roof can withstand these environmental challenges while meeting the specific requirements of industrial buildings.
The Importance of Expertise and Experience
Industrial roofing is significantly more complex than residential roofing. It involves dealing with larger surface areas, specialized materials, and unique structural demands. Therefore, hiring a contractor with expertise in industrial roofing is essential. Experienced contractors in Sydney are familiar with the local building codes and regulations, ensuring that your project is compliant and up to standard.
Additionally, seasoned contractors have a deep understanding of different roofing materials, from metal to membrane roofing, and can provide recommendations based on the specific needs of your facility. Whether it’s a factory, warehouse, or manufacturing plant, an expert contractor will ensure that the chosen roofing system is tailored to your building’s use and environment.
Materials Matter: Choosing the Right Roofing System
Sydney’s climate requires roofing materials that can handle both high heat and heavy rainfall. Metal roofing, known for its durability and longevity, is a popular choice for industrial buildings. It offers excellent protection against the elements and requires minimal maintenance. Another option is membrane roofing, which provides superior waterproofing and is ideal for flat or low-sloped roofs.
When selecting a roofing system, it’s essential to consider factors such as energy efficiency, cost, and long-term maintenance. A reputable industrial roofing contractor in Sydney will help you weigh these factors and choose a system that offers the best value over time.
Safety and Compliance: Non-Negotiable Aspects
Safety is a top priority in any industrial roofing project. Contractors must adhere to strict safety protocols to protect both workers and the building’s occupants. In Sydney, industrial roofing contractors are required to follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, which include the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection systems, and proper site management.
Compliance with local regulations is another critical aspect. A knowledgeable contractor will ensure that all permits are obtained, and that the roofing installation meets Sydney’s stringent building codes. This not only prevents potential legal issues but also guarantees the longevity and safety of the roof.
Finding the Right Contractor
When searching for an industrial roofing contractor in Sydney, it’s essential to conduct thorough research. Look for contractors with a proven track record, positive client testimonials, and appropriate licensing and insurance. Additionally, consider the contractor’s ability to provide a comprehensive warranty on both materials and workmanship, which is a testament to their confidence in the quality of their service.
In conclusion, choosing the right Industrial Roofing Contractors Sydney is a decision that should not be taken lightly. By considering factors such as experience, material expertise, safety, and compliance, you can ensure that your roofing project is executed to the highest standards, providing lasting protection for your industrial facility.
