The nice thing about being a veteran of 32 fractures is that you get a very good sense of whether a new injury is a fracture or not. Sometimes that means going to a second orthopedic surgeon if the first one won't do additional tests when the fracture didn't show up on the ER's janky old X-rays. Sometimes it means having yourself a good gloat. Sometimes it means "this is definitely broken, but the treatment is just taping or rest so I'm going to choose not to go to the hassle of getting it x-rayed." Tonight it means, "This is a double sprain at worst; I have a walker in the house and enough Ace bandages to do a pretty good Claude Rains impersonation, so let's see what it feels like tomorrow."

(The time that always sticks out in my mind is when the doctor kept insisting there was no fracture and I couldn't get in to see another doctor for months. I figured the treatment would be mostly the same, so I stopped making a fuss about it. On my last follow-up appointment he admitted that he had been mistakenly looking at an old post-treatment x-ray of the same area from years earlier.)
