The Assignment
This just came to me b/c I wondered if the fandom thinks about her. Rated G. All mistakes are sadly mine.
“Don’t forget to write in your journal tonight,” I mutter to myself, imitating my instructor. They want us to document our progress. I look in the mirror and sigh heavily, before grabbing my book. Sitting down, I tap my pencil on the paper before I commit to begin my assignment.
“Recall someone from your past. Describe them and then juxtapose who you are versus them,” I read out loud.
A metal image comes to mind, followed by a stark memory of her being kissed by him. Grabbing my pencil I begin to write.
She's the favored one. It’s always her. She’s the purty one, the privileged one. The one that got the boy I wanted badly. The boy is the district hunk. He's so purty - can you call a guy purty? No, I don't think you can but you can call him handsome. Such a waste because he is purty as beautiful as she. I digress. Back to her. She's quiet. Thoughtful. She’s even befriended the girl everyone was in awe of. Her hair is always perfect. The wind caresses and leaves it looking better than it did before. She lives in the biggest house and wears the best dresses. Even if they are pink and frilly. They’re still lovely. She never goes hungry, - okay I’m fat, or as my mother said, rather big-boned. Contrary to belief I do not eat a lot, and there wasn’t a lot of food in my house. Because if there was, I would eat all of my emotions. Me you ask, who am I? Why do I sound jealous? I’m the girl you never think of. It’s okay. I know who I am. I’m the sidekick. You know which one. The girl who is never considered to be a bridesmaid. I’m the forgotten one. Little did I know, but, I became a survivor and she didn’t. How do I feel, about this? Guilty. I survived and the girl who had it all - didn’t. Madge. She never got out of that big house. Possibly died on impact. Forever young and frozen in my head. But I survived, and I wish I could see her here. Even if it meant she’d be with him. They say good dies young and evil lasts forever. I guess I’m evil because I survived. I wish I could see her - apologize. How do I go on knowing that a lot of people didn’t make it –“
“DELLY!”
At my brothers shout I wipe the tears from my face and turn my frown upside down. “Yes.”
“They rescued Peeta! And they need your help!” My brother shouts excitedly.
And I nod. Because I want Peeta to have his happily ever after even if I don’t.

I’m looking for a fic where Peeta’s family is reacting to the games. I think it was shifting POV and Delly was in it too. Thanks!
Hello Anon!
I am sorry that I could not locate a fic like this. I looked on and off for a couple hours and simply can't find it. This sounds super interesting though! I'll keep thinking of different ways to look for this fic and update if I find anything!
Update 9/22/24 @11:35pm
The Final Eight-FernWithy (ao3) Summary: Delly Cartwright watches the Games unfold as her oldest friend is among the final eight tributes fighting to survive, and the media descend on District Twelve. Perspectives-MalTease (ff) Summary: The interactions of Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen, from the point of view of those around them. Pre-HG to Post-MJ
Thank you @pinwheelwhirl and @norbertsmom

tell us your favorites everlark fics
Thanks for the ask!! They make me very excited lol. I honestly don’t read a lot of everlark lol, I’m more of a hayeffie fan with a side of everlark. Just becuase I feel like mother Suzanne did a good job with them in the books. But truly, a lot of my fav hayeffie ships are from either Peeta or Katniss’ perspective.
The ones listed here are mostly post epilogue (:
( I lied they are all post epilogue.)
this is the first day of my life by sam_writes_fics @sam-loves-seb ----> "It’s not perfect. None of them are perfect. But that’s not the point. // katniss and peeta and haymitch and effie and their life after everything;" I LOVE THIS IT WAS GOOD
You Are in Love (Everlark's Version) by bored_author ---> "A collection of one-shots about Katniss and Peeta working through their traumas, together." This is probably the most everlark one on here. It was cute
The Team Trap by EllanaSan @ellainthetardis (my queen omg) ---> "'What’s the very good reason that’ll get her to come?/ Katniss asked. Peeta was silent for a moment, his hand stilled on her back. 'It involves a technical white lie.' In her experience, lies were hardly ever technical or white." I love EllanaSan with my entire heart.
End of the World by FernWithy ---> Ok this is a very Haymitch centered series but it literally rocked my world and I think everyone needs to read this. There is some awesome POV's of characters you rarely hear from. Delly gets the spotlight she deserves and Peets gets it, too. It's a wonderful, long read that I'd highly reccomend.
Sorry there isn't more! I have lots of other fics that I really enjoy that are from Peeta or Katniss' view that are just more Hayeffie centric (linked under the line (: ), I tried to pull the more Everlark ones for you !
they got no idea (about me and you) by fckingpoetry ---> "peeta looks for advice on how to keep katniss safe in the arena and walks in on haymitch and effie sleeping in the same bed." I cannot stress how much I love this author. And any fic where the kids find out about Effie and Haymitch makes me giggle.
The Clue in the Yoghurt by EllanaSan ---> "In retrospect, Haymitch should have known something was up the morning he walked into his kitchen, rubbing his face to chase the remnants of sleep, and found Katniss pilfering his fridge." So silly, Katniss accidental pregnancy and it makes me smile to see hayeffie acting like the parents they are.
Sprinkled on Your Life by KarlyBING ---> "With all her silliness, shallowness, and overbearing ways, Effie had still cried while holding her after coming back from the arena, she was the one to publicly unite them during the Quell, cared for her during a war, braided her hair when she was too depressed to do it herself, made her wedding dress out of worn cotton shirts and second-hand wool, held her hands after delivering her first child, changed diapers at 3 am so Peeta and her could sleep a couple more hours, taught her children how to say please and thank you, and still made her hot chocolate every rainy day without even having to ask." I cried. So much. For only 1,801 words. A nice look at mama!Effie and darling Katniss.
that which resembles a grave (but isn't) by ifonlyiwasawriter ---> "Haymitch finds Katniss covered in dirt in his backyard; there is an explanation for this, but not one that either of them likes." Haymitch and Katniss, lovely very traumatized father and very traumatized daughter bonding.
Any way I love Haymitch and Effie goodnight !

part 1 of my new multi part thg fic from peeta’s pov based off of the song «the loneliest» by måneskin!
each part will be based off a different point in everlark’s relationship, starting from the first day of school when they’re 5 y/o, all the way through the quell. seeing as this is pt 1, this centres on the first time everlark meet each other, aka the start of his feelings for katniss💚🧡
(i swear it’ll get better lol this is just 5 y/o peeta pov so it’s a bit more limited✨)
this one goes out to all the angsty yearners out there
The Loneliest
You’ll be the saddest part of me
A part of me that will never be mine
It’s obvious
Tonight is gonna be the loneliest
I grip my father’s hand tightly, dreading the moment I know he’s going to let go and push me towards the line of all the other 5-year-olds already forming outside the classroom door. It’s my first day of school, and I know I should be excited, but all I feel is an anxious pit in my stomach. There’s a few kids from town already in line, most of them with a parent or two watching them somewhat misty-eyed from the edge of the courtyard, but I’m truly astounded by just how many of my classmates are Seam.
I’d never been to the Seam, let alone had a conversation with someone from there. Whenever they come into the bakery, I always run to find my parents. My mother says the people from there are vermin, the worst kind of people that Twelve has to offer; I’m not allowed to go within two blocks of that side of the district, not even for deliveries within town. I’m not sure why. Looking at them now, they seem perfectly normal to me. They’re skinnier than us, for sure. Their clothes are a bit shabbier too. But normal nonetheless.
The squeaking of the gate opening snaps my attention away from my classmates, and I turn to see the only Seam face that really looks familiar. I recognize the man immediately from the times I’d peeked out my window early in the morning to see my father already awake, passing off a semi-stale loaf in exchange for a squirrel from the Seam man. I’d grown to look forward to the days when I saw the strange man in the alleyway. It meant we’d get to eat something other than rock-hard bread and nearly rotten goat cheese for dinner.
He appears to be around my father’s age with dark curls framing his face, and piercing grey eyes. This man carries himself differently from my father, though. Less weary, somehow, despite being Seam. As if the lines on his face are from years of smiling rather than scowling.
I half expect my father to greet the man from the Seam, but he just stares blankly at some fixed point on the horizon behind them.
It doesn’t matter anyways, as the Seam man’s attention is entirely occupied by the young girl who appears from behind him.
She has the same obsidian hair as her father, the same quicksilver eyes and dark olive skin, nearly as deep and rich a brown as the cocoa powder we use in the bakery. The morning sun glances off her hair, meticulously plaited in twin braids, save for a few unruly curls at the front that have already escaped in the lingering summer humidity. The girl wears a knee length, red plaid dress, but there’s something about the style of it that’s not totally Seam. It’s closer, really, to the clothes my mother gave to Delly’s family from her own childhood. Old-fashioned townie.
I must’ve been staring for a while, entranced by the appearance of the beautiful girl from the Seam, because my father finally nudges me and points her out.
“See that little girl?”
I nod, thinking I’m about to get told off for staring.
“I wanted to marry her mother, but she ran off with a coal miner,” he says.
I stare at my father in bewilderment. “A coal miner? Why would she want a coal miner if she could’ve had you?”
“Because when he sings… even the birds stop to listen,” my father says, glancing at the coal miner in question.
The girl’s dad is now crouched in front of her, saying something unintelligible that causes her to grin at him and throw her arms around his neck. He embraces his daughter and plants a kiss on her forehead before giving her one last wave as she runs off to join some other Seam kids in line. He walks over to the rest of the waiting parents, whistling an unfamiliar tune, and it’s then that I realize he’s the only parent from the Seam to see his child off.
It makes sense, of course. The Seam is mostly coal miners, and the mines have been open for two, maybe three hours already. It’s a wonder any Seam parent made it at all. He must’ve risked something important to be here today.
It’s then that the teacher finally opens the classroom door and the rest of the kids start to be corralled into line by their parents. My father moves to drop my hand, but I grab onto his tighter.
“Please,” I whisper. “I don’t want you to leave.” I can feel tears welling up in my eyes.
“Don’t be soft, Peeta,” he says, wrenching his hand away. “Just go find Delly. Have a nice day at school.”
I wipe my eyes and reluctantly join my classmates. But as the small groups that have gathered begin to thin out into a single file, I suddenly find myself directly behind the girl in the red dress.
As if sensing my gaze, she turns on her heel, those dove grey eyes boring into me. And there’s something about her stare that sets off a foreign fluttering feeling in my chest.
“What?” she asks, somewhat defensively.
“Oh, um… nothing,” I manage to choke out. “I mean, I just think your outfit is really pretty. Your hair too.”
Her cheeks turn as scarlet as the dress itself as she bashfully mumbles a soft “Thank you” and suddenly becomes very interested in her shoes.
“I’m Peeta,” I say, offering her my hand in the way my father said is polite. Part of me wonders if she’ll even take it after I seem to have embarrassed her with my flattery.
I feel my entire body exhale a sigh of relief as she tentatively reaches out.
“Katniss,” she says, shaking my hand.
Katniss.
I’d never heard a name quite like it, but as soon as it left her lips, I knew it would forever be my favorite.
Before I can blurt out something stupid, like how beautiful her name is and how perfectly it fits her, the teacher’s saying something and the kids in front of us start flooding into the classroom.
Katniss shifts her attention forward, but my eyes are locked on her. The way her skirt swishes when she turns, the way she turns up her chin and marches inside, though I know she must be as nervous as the rest of us. In fact, I’m so dazzled by her as I step into the room that I barely notice the tiny blonde girl barreling toward me until I’m tackled in a bear hug.
“Peeta!” squeals Delly in my ear as she squeezes me tight. “Happy first day of school! Are you excited? I could barely sleep, I was so excited. I can’t wait to meet everyone!”
“Yeah, Delly, I’m excited,” I say with a small smile, but I’m unable to tear my gaze away from Katniss, who now sits somewhat anxiously next to Madge, the mayor’s daughter.
Delly keeps babbling about all the people she’s already met, and how normal the Seam kids appear to be, and normally I’d have half a thought to listen to my friend’s endless stream of unfiltered thoughts. But as I stare at the mayor’s daughter next to Katniss, all I can think about is how I’ve never wanted to be someone else so badly in my whole life.
❁❁❁
“Does anybody know the valley song?”
The words are barely out of the music teacher’s mouth when someone’s hand shoots up immediately in the air.
“Katniss,” the teacher says, “Would you like to come up here and sing it for us, please?”
Katniss rises from her place next to Madge, and slowly makes her way to the front of the class. The teacher takes her hand and helps her up on a stool.
“Whenever youre ready, Katniss.”
She takes a deep breath.
Down in the valley, valley so low,
Late in the evening, hear the train blow.
The train, love, hear the train blow.
Late in the evening, hear the train blow.
I’d never heard a voice so clear and sweet. Sure, I’d heard Delly singing before, but that always had more of a shrill and squeaky element to it.
Go build me a mansion, build it so high,
So I can see my true love go by.
See him go by, love, see him go by.
So I can see my true love go by.
The birds that had been twittering nonstop outside the window start to fall quiet, one by one.
Go write a letter, send it by mail.
Bake it and stamp it to the Capitol jail.
Capitol jail, love, to the Capitol jail.
Bake it and stamp it to the Capitol jail.
Everything is silent, as if the entire world is holding its breath, desperate not to miss a single note.
Roses are red, love; violets are blue.
Birds in the heavens know I love you.
Know I love you, oh, know I love you,
Birds in the heavens know I love you.
Everyone’s quiet for a moment, until I find myself rising from my chair to applaud the girl from the Seam. The rest of the class erupts into cheers immediately, and Katniss’ cheeks are once again burning red for the second time today. She shyly hops off the stool and rejoins Madge as the birds return to their own songs, though I could swear some of them were now chirping to the tune of the valley song.
Delly leans over to me and whispers, “She’s amazing!”
“Yeah.” I look over at Katniss, who I find staring back at me, but her gaze quickly flits away as that thing in my chest starts fluttering again. “She really is, huh?”
❁❁❁
“Ryan, how do I know if I’m in love with someone?”
My brother nearly chokes on the water he’s been chugging. “What?”
My oldest brother and I sit on a low wall outside the older kids’ wrestling room, waiting for our other brother to finish practice. He’d been late for some reason or another, so he’s outside doing windsprints while everyone else gets to go home. But since we’d promised our parents we’d walk home together, we now have to wait on him too.
“How do I know if I like a girl as more than a friend?”
My brother sets down his water bottle at his feet and hangs the towel that he’s been using to dry off his sweat on the wall next to him. “You've barely been here a day and you’re already having girl troubles? How does that happen, kid? You’re five years old.”
“It’s not like I was trying, Rye,” I say, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Is this about Delly?”
“No! Never,” I say, “She’s my sister, you know that.”
Ryan raises an eyebrow in mock disbelief.
“It’s not Delly!”
“Sure it’s not, Peeta,” he says with a chuckle. “Well, you know when you were a bit younger, and Dad used to throw you up in the air and catch you?” I nod. “You know that funny feeling you got in your stomach when you were falling, but before he caught you? That’s what it feels like, except it’s about a hundred times stronger, and it’s really hard to get it to go away. It’s like when you see them, you’re suddenly in an open freefall with no way to stop yourself.”
I sit quietly for a moment. “Rye, I think I’m in love with Katniss Everdeen.”
Ryan’s eyes widen in alarm. “Everdeen? Like from the Seam?”
“Yeah. She’s the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen, and when she sings it’s so sweet that the birds stop to listen,” I say.
“I’m sure she’s great, Peeta,” he says with a smile, though it could almost pass for a grimace. “Just do me a favor? Don’t tell Mother you like a girl from the Seam, especially not an Everdeen. It’ll be our little secret, promise?”
“I promise,” I say. I know how my mother feels about the Seam, and I couldn’t bear the thought of her hating Katniss that way. Keeping a secret wouldn’t be a problem. Besides, I don’t even know what to do with this newfound realization of feelings for Katniss. I can’t tell her about it, no, she’d probably hate me forever; she could barely tolerate me complimenting her dress this morning. It’s not like it would lead anywhere anyways. I know we’re too young, that we still have many years before I’d ever even be able to act on my feelings.
So for now I’m stuck in freefall for a girl I can’t have. And it’s absolutely miserable.

Let's talk about Delly Cartwright.
Do you like her character?
What do you think about Katniss' description of her: "Delly Cartwright is a pasty-faced, lumpy girl with yellowish hair"
How did you feel about her exclusion from the movies?
What do you think happened to her after the war?
Do you have any fancast?
Any fanfic with Delly as main character or with her POV of the book events?
Thank you :D
@curiousnonny
I love Delly (don't I say that with most characters? Man it's almost like Collins writes amazing characters).
I think this is a desription colored with a bit of greif, jealously and general attitude of someone who is in a lot of pain emotonally. I genueonly don't think Katniss would be so harsh on poor Dell's if Peeta wasn't hijacked and out of her reach. At that point, even if nothing romantic is going on Delly is getting to do what she wants: help Peeta, try and bring him back. Her not giving her a glowing report makes sense.
I, as usual, kinda wish they'd kept her but in Dellys case I understand actually? Mostly cause it'd be difficult with the small amount of time we get with her to get the context we need for her helping Peeta. Doing all that with the time amount of time she is present in the story would be tricky.
I have no fancasts of spesiifc fanfics in mind, however!
I like to beleive she and Katniss become close friends. Mostly because I want so badly for Katniss to be surrounded by bright, postive and loving people and Delly fits that bill :).

ferris boyd, and remaining altruistic in the face of adversity
or: in which i overanalyze a children's book and write an essay about it.
(cws for discussion of child abuse, and also spoilers for "true (..sort of)" if you've never read that. 2,700+ words long not counting the screenshotted paragraphs from the book, this is much longer than your average tumblr post, be warned)
"true (...sort of)" by katherine hannigan is my favorite book. this is no secret. my url is a word originally created for the book. i talk about it constantly, especially about wanting more people to talk about it with. i practically became one of the characters from it. this book means a lot to me, and if you're a friend of mine i will more than likely recommend it to you at least once, regardless of whether or not you like reading.
there are many reasons for this. it takes a concept that feels as if it's been done to death (troublemaker kid cleans up their act via the power of ✨friendship✨) and executes it in a way i've never quite seen before. it goes extreme lengths to have you sympathize with all of its prominent characters on at least some level, even the ones who do harm. it's a tale of solace through pain, and the way people can heal inner wounds simply by sticking it out with each other.
by far the highlight of the book, however, and the answer i've received every time i've asked my friends who their favorite character was, is ferris boyd, and the way she's written. we don't usually get her pov -- out of all 74 chapters of the book, a whopping one chapter (chapter 8) is dedicated to seeing things through her eyes -- but by the time the story's come to a close, we feel as if we've learned a lot about her, and most importantly we feel as if we've learned these things with our protagonists.
when we first meet ferris boyd, he is a boy in a beat-up car with a trailer hooked to the end of it, a boy sitting next to an older man with a sadness in his blue eyes so haunting it remains with the protagonist, delly, even after she's left the area. then we learn that this is not a boy -- actually, this is a girl, who for whatever reason does not speak, and cannot be touched or yelled at or else she'll spiral into a panic attack.
then we find out that the sadness we first saw in that impala permeates her entire being. in class, ferris often has her face down on her desk, either asleep or just too miserable to keep her head up. we at least know she's too miserable to do her schoolwork. delly describes her as a disaster, and it shows.
but when recess rolls around, we see a different side of her. we see a side of her that is still sad, but in a way free to do as she pleases. though, this personal idea of freedom conflicts with what you'd expect from a kid her age. with any other 11-year-old, you'd expect freedom to be running around with their hands in the air, squealing with delight with a huge grin on their face. but ferris boyd's freedom is as quiet as she is -- her idea of freedom is sitting against a tree and reading a book as squirrels scamper over her legs.
and from here, we get to know her more and more. she likes to play basketball, and she's really great at doing so. she takes care of a black cat named mowr, who stays by her side whenever possible. she has a rickety treehouse out in the woods where she likes to sit and read. she doesn't speak, but if she wants to get your attention she'll slap her thigh or clap her hands. and while she doesn't like to be touched, not all physical contact is frightening to her -- she can't handle having her arm grabbed, but being leaned against or having her hand held isn't so bad.
the most stand-out quality that we pick up on, however, is ferris boyd's altruism towards others. apart from rb, she evidently has one of the kindest hearts out of every character in the book. she's incredibly selfless, and based on the many examples we see throughout the book, she seems more willing to help others than herself.
the first instance of this altruism that we see is in the very first chapter that we come to know her, and the only pov chapter for her in the whole book. as ferris is unpacking her things, she hears a rustling in the bushes, and as most people would, goes to investigate. she finds a black cat there, who we soon come to know as mowr, and feeds it.
now, this is a significant display of kindness under any circumstance, but here it's particularly sweet of her to do for a few reasons. for one, black cats are one of the most disliked kinds of cats in the world due to the superstitious belief that they bring bad luck. but there's another reason why this is so kind of her, too, and one that i didn't pick up on until very recently.
i remember going in with the assumption that mowr was a stray when this scene came up, and i'm sure many other people did too. but here's the thing: if mowr really was a stray/feral cat, it wouldn't be acting like this in this scene. if it were a stray, it would've gotten out of there the moment it saw ferris boyd. it certainly wouldn't have meowed, seeing as cats typically only meow to get the attention of humans, and a stray typically wants the opposite. and sure, it perhaps would've taken the food, but it definitely wouldn't have let ferris pet it.
putting this fact and the fact that this cat was at a house that'd recently been moved out of, i can only really come to one conclusion: the text is trying to imply that mowr was owned by the previous residents of the old hennepin place, and was left behind when they moved away. and, considering how ferris boyd responded to mowr, appears she gleaned this as well. i don't really have to tell you why taking in a cat that was recently abandoned by its owners is such a caring thing for her to do.
as we get to know more about ferris, we get to know more about her kind-hearted nature as well. there are a few examples here and there, such as her giving delly, somebody who at this point she's only known as the loud, angry girl who fights people and misgenders them to their faces, a second chance, or when she persistently tries to teach rb how to shoot a basket, even when he tries to throw in the towel. but one of the most significant examples of her selflessness comes up in chapter 55, when she offers to play novello in a game of h-o-r-s-e in exchange for him leaving her friends alone.
now, at this point in time, ferris boyd is not in the best state. somebody she considered to be a good friend, brud, hasn't come to visit her in weeks, and for all she knows she drove him away by being the quiet, timid girl that she is. with this in mind, plus some things we'll discuss later, it's clear why she'd jump to protect them, and it's obviously a very noble thing for her to do. but there's another layer to this i want to discuss, and one that'll be elaborated on even further later.
right after that screenshot above, this line is written.
this is pretty clearly a one-off simile, but i still found the comparsion between ferris boyd and a lamb really interesting. when you think of a lamb, you often think of innocence and purity, something that, while not the subject of this part of the analysis, will come back up later on. but you also may think of a sacrifical lamb, a symbol of sacrifice and, well, altruism.
in this scene, ferris boyd is the sacrificial lamb. she is running the risk of being ridiculed in order to help the people she cares deeply for. and in the end, she is ridiculed. but not once does she think, "i'm going to be made fun of by everybody if this doesn't go well." rather, she thinks, "i don't want to lose you. if this doesn't go well, you're gone." and when it doesn't go well in the end, she isn't hurt the most by the vitriolic words that've been hurled her way. she's hurt the most by brud, who she gave her trust to, another sacrifice considering the harrowing conditions she lives in, and in return got a non-verbal "yes, i agree" when novello said she was an it.
this trend of ferris boyd being a sacrificial lamb culminates in perhaps her biggest moment in the novel, and the first and only time she uses her voice: in chapter 65, where she saves delly from being sent to an alternative placement school by crying out for her attention.
this is, if you know literally anything about ferris boyd, a HUGE moment of vulnerability for her. up until this one moment, she hadn't spoken a word, presumably out of fear of...something, happening. so for her to go out and shout something at the top of her lungs, after being completely silent for so long...it almost seems uncharacteristic of her. but this isn't just her shouting anything. this is her shouting for her friend's safety. this, like many other things, is a sacrifice, and perhaps her most devastating one yet, seeing as it seems to lead to severe misfortune afterwards.
ferris boyd is, by all means, a very selfless person, always putting others before herself in any situation. but what is it about this part of her that sticks out so much against everything else? what is it about this selflessness that is worth pointing out? what has this feverish rant of mine been building up to?
well, to put it bluntly: based on everything we know about ferris boyd's homelife, she has every reason not to be this altruistic. in fact, one could say she has every reason to be a selfish asshole instead.
while we're never shown explicitly what happens to ferris boyd at home, we do have a lot of things that are implied for us. the first thing that comes to mind are the huge purple welts delly sees on her back while playing in the lake at delaferbia, which, combined with her fear of being touched, paints a pretty clear picture of how she's treated at home. it's noted a few times that her father is often away from home and doesn't even bother to get somebody to supervise her while he's away. also, and this part of the book might actually be in my top favorite lines from it period, we have this:
i really love this part, because it implies SO MUCH. for one, the "mouth that wouldn't speak" line gives the implication that ferris boyd's mutism is, at least on some level, an involuntary defense mechanism, rather than being voluntary as many people read it as. but also, i want to call attention to that last line. "she saw brud hit himself. she flinched, like she felt it."
in this instance, brud is hitting himself in the mouth to punish himself for having a speech impediment. so isn't it interesting how ferris boyd, somebody known for not speaking, would resonate with somebody hitting themself after speaking at the wrong time? more importantly, isn't it interesting what this indicates about her father, who was so affected by ferris boyd so much as speaking to save one of her friends that he tried to move away? and isn't it interesting how, just at the beginning of this story, they'd just moved into town and nonchalantly unpacked their things as if they'd done this many times before? because, more likely than not, they had done this many times before?
the picture that's been painted of ferris boyd's father from just these facts alone is upsetting, to say the least. and, seeing as her mother is never seen in the text or even mentioned as an aside, it seems that the only possible nurturing figure in her life is either dead, has left her, or was never there to begin with.
ferris boyd has every reason to be a bad person. abuse is a cycle, after all, and if she were a bad person, i don't envision anybody blaming her for that. we all know of antagonist characters that used to be sweet when they were younger, until something awful happened to them and they grew into a vicious and brooding person. this trope is so well-known that it has its own page on tv tropes under the name "used to be a sweet kid."
ferris boyd could be a jerk. but she's not one. because while it'd certainly be much easier for her to throw compassion out of the window and go all-out with emotionally fortifying herself, using cruelty to drive others away and prevent herself from giving people the opportunity to hurt her, she's not one to do that. that requires a level of fearfulness she doesn't have, and while yes, ferris boyd is jittery and easily frightened, that doesn't mean she can't be brave. she's very brave, actually, and much stronger than most give her credit for, which is something that's commented on in the text.
if you, the reader, have been paying attention, you will remember that i mentioned lambs being a symbol of innocence. but just as they are a symbol of innocence, they can also be a symbol of the corruption of such a thing. lambs are prey animals, and being so small and unknowing, they're easy for predators to hunt down. but when the predator fails in taking their kill, the lamb survives with torn, bloodied wool, and wide eyes that will never again soften like they used to. and that's something that rings true for ferris boyd. her innocence has been tainted, and it's left her scared and hypervigilant, but she's still alive, and she came back stronger in the end.
oh, yeah. and now that we're on the part of the story in which ferris boyd runs away in an attempt to escape her father, i want to bring this part up.
this part ties pretty much everything together. not only is it another show of ferris boyd's selflessness, her worrying for the wellbeing of somebody who isn't there for her about 75% of the time (and when he is around, he's yelling at and beating her), but also, it just really hammers in my point that, while being rude to others would be taking the easy route, that's just not something ferris boyd has the capacity to do. if she still loves her horrible, abusive father, then why would she not love anyone else?
because while her innocence was corrupted, her gentle, tender heart was not. through everything, she did not forget how to be kind to others. she did not forget the warmth of being vulnerable for somebody else who won't take advantage of that, and though she may be apprehensive about leaving herself vulnerable, she values the love of others much more than she fears being hurt.
because ferris boyd is a sweet girl. she likes animals and basketball and reading, and she would do anything to help her friends, and she likes the funny words her best friend ever likes to make up, and when she blushes she blushes with her whole face and neck, and she falls asleep in the middle of the day sometimes, and she was scared of swimming at first but when she put down her defenses and tried it out it was so much fun that she wanted to do it again after it was over.
because while ferris boyd is afraid of a lot, she's not afraid to end the cycle her father laid out for her. she's not afraid to be kind. the rips in her fleece have not mended yet, but she's willing to help mend the wounds in others.
tl;dr the gif below is ferris boyd

Let's talk about Delly Cartwright.
Do you like her character?
What do you think about Katniss' description of her: "Delly Cartwright is a pasty-faced, lumpy girl with yellowish hair"
How did you feel about her exclusion from the movies?
What do you think happened to her after the war?
Do you have any fancast?
Any fanfic with Delly as main character or with her POV of the book events?
Thank you :D
@curiousnonny
Love her!
She’s a little ray of sunshine:
She genuinely likes people. All people, not just a select few she’s spent years making up her mind about.
Delly’s first appearance (in name only) is in book 1 when Peeta comes to a tipsy Katniss’s rescue.
I actually think the description in this context is mostly meant to demonstrate that NO ONE would mistake these two for the other:
The dark red hair, the striking features, the porcelain white skin.
Vs
a pasty-faced, lumpy girl with yellowish hair
Notice how she contrasts each element: hair, skin, face. Rather than a personal dig at our good friend Delly.
Other thoughts
A couple people have already mentioned it, but I agree that Delly likely hadn’t been close to Peeta since childhood. The stories she shared are childhood memories: making dough girls and boys and drawing chalk animals. She doesn’t relay any recent/teenage memories…
I get the impression that Delly is a Pollyanna. It’s interesting that we get Katniss’s skewed opinion of herself contrasted with Peeta/Delly’s biased opinion of Katniss. District 12 public opinion was likely somewhere in between.
I don’t have any Post War headcanons for Delly which is nice because it doesn’t get in the way of my reading enjoyment when she is/isn’t back in D12.
I’m bad at fancasts but I will say this part reminds me of Nicola Coughlan in Derry Girls:
“You missed the best part. Delly lost her temper at Peeta over how he treated you. She got very squeaky. It was like someone stabbing a mouse with a fork repeatedly. The whole dining hall was riveted.”
In terms of FanFiction - I love @periwinckles interpretation of Delly!
Thank you for the ask @curiousnonny!!!

Delly yaaaaaaassss my girl. I love Delly's character because, hear me out, in Mockingjay, Delly talks about how awesome she's always thought Katniss was, and while Katniss comments that this is just who Delly is, she is genuinely kind and just likes people, the way Delly talks still comes off as a little... strong? Socially awkward? It just fascinates me to compare Delly's character with Peeta's, whose kindness we associate with sincerity, just like Katniss does with Delly's, but Peeta's kindness also comes with charm and charisma, which he uses effectively to manipulate the Capitol audiences. Even Gale comments in Catching Fire, on how it's difficult it is to dislike Peeta, because he's just so damn... nice. Compare that to Haymitch and Katniss's shock over the way Delly describes Katniss in Mockingjay and how they just don't know what to do with it. And I think it's because they can't see how it benefits her to be nice, other than... she just is. Peeta's kindness is usually genuine, but at times, he can wield it as a weapon, and that's something Haymitch and Katniss can understand.
Everybody seems to like Peeta, but Delly seems to like everybody.
As for the way Katniss describes her, I think it smacks of jealousy. Katniss, my girl, you can be so petty at times, lol. I think it's entirely likely that Delly wasn't exceptionally, aesthetically beautiful. And Katniss, whose default mode is prickly and protective, is jealous of Delly's ability to be genuinely kind and friendly to most people. That makes her description of Delly come off as almost... cruel. Especially when you compare it to how Katniss thinks about Delly's inner qualities and personality during Mockingjay.
Her exclusion from the movies is one of the things that really ticks me off, although I had a feeling when they cut Madge out that Delly would face the same fate for the movies. Madge and Delly are the only named, non-romantically involved, district 12 friends we have for Katniss and Peeta, respectively. Their exclusion from the movies removes some of the depth of the stories and the main characters. I get why they did it, time constraints blah blah blah, but this goes back to my point about it working better as a series than a movie.
Anyways. I have to hope that Delly survived the war. There was no reason for her to leave District 13, even though she was old enough to be training as a soldier, I doubt she's someone 13 would have sent to the frontlines. I can't imagine her doing well in military training, given how nice she is, so it's my belief that 13 would have trained her for something else. I don't think she would've stayed in 13, though. I think she probably found a way to convince 13 to take her to the Capitol so she could be there to help Peeta recover from his burns and maybe continue what she was doing to help him recover from the hijacking.
I have two theories I go back and forth on as to what she does after Peeta returns to 12. Sometimes I think that she stayed on with Dr. Aurelius for a while and trained to become what would amount to a psychologist/therapist in Panem. I don't think she stayed in the Capitol for long, though. I think at some point, she'd want to come home to 12. She could always conduct her education through a mixture of correspondence and trips to the Capitol and other districts. My other theory is that she resumes her parents' trade, making shoes, and contributes to the rebuilding process that way, and she picks up a few other tangential skills as well while she's at it. For wither theory, when she comes home depends on how old her younger brother is and what he winds up wanting to do. Usually, though, I think he'd want to return to 12 with her to ceremonially bury their parents and help rebuild the district.

Well, well, well, let's have a chat shall we?
There's a few things that you need to know about me:
1- I LOVE minor characters.
2- I LOVE when said characters are apparently irrelevant and end up being crucial to our hero in some way;
That being said...
I LOVE Delly Cartwright. I don't know why, because I liked her from the beginning, when Peeta mentions her name and how "similar" she was to the Avox girl. Something about the name made her sound so welcoming and approachable.
DESCRIPTION: My first thought when Katniss described her was that probably Delly wasn't like that at all. Katniss describes her in a sort of belittling way. To me it sounded like how a girl with a crush would describe another girl that she believed to be a closer friend to said crush. Something like "oh she's not even that pretty", so I'm not sure how much we should take her depiction of Delly as accurate.
From that point forward, Delly's physical appearance is in the sidelines: she ends up being an important part of Peeta's recovery and probably in his rediscovery of his feelings for Katniss (remember how she snapped at him for being rude to Katniss in the cafeteria?)
MOVIES: I was sad that she wasn't included in the movies. I know having Prim being the one to visit Peeta was simpler, but come on... it made no sense at all. The book specifically says they chose Delly because she had no connection to Katniss.
AFTER THE WAR: I think Delly came back to District 12 after the war. She had a little brother to look after. Given all the trauma the two must have faced, I think it might be easier for her to come back, instead of going to a different district.
FANCAST: Eliza Taylor will always be Delly Cartwright in my mind.
FANFICS: I always loved Delly, and when I started my first fic "Letters From New Panem" I knew I wanted her to play a sort of big role. I needed a romantic pair for her and ended up going with Thom (another minor character that I liked a lot.) I ended up falling in love with this pairing, and that led to my very first Thelly centric fic "The train Back to Twelve". I would love to stand here and tell you that my favorite Delly fic was written by someone else, but truth be told, there's not that many! (And even though there's a ton of fic authors who write way better than me, if I'm being honest, I do love my plot line, and the way I imagined them coming together after the war.)
It came to the point that now Thelly is a distinctive feature in all my HG fics.
